I have a question for you all... how do you budget for race fees, travel, etc?

I quit my job at the beginning of the year so money is tighter now than it was. When I was working I didn't have time to train or run races. Now I have time, but less money - lol. I think part of my problem is not only do I have to pay for the entry fee, but also a babysitter for my kids. So gets pretty expensive.

I had a friend that paid for local races and said it came out of her entertainment budget.

I've not done many races, but I would say the idea of taking it out of an 'entertainment budget' is a good one. I have a 'holiday account' and pay into this every month. From this comes all my holiday needs - travel, spending money, dance festivals and races. If the money isn't there, I can't go.

I also favour trails, and trail races tend to be cheaper than road races, as there aren't the added costs of closing roads. So for example a trail marathon a couple of hours from me is £37 to enter, then camping is another £10-£15 on top of that. I don't expect to get a race t-shirt out of that (bling yes). Shorter races are around £12 a go.

I keep my races local (i.e. no further than 30 miles from my house), so I only have gas and entry fees to pay for. The fees are usually around $20-$30 per race and like your friend, this counts as part of my entertainment budget.

Playing at the playground in bright sun counts as heat/sun acclimation right?

@lporter229 I love the FFLR too. This ones Just at max distance so it's got me thinking more. Yeah, I think my constant posting has everyone either annoyed or excited for my marathon...lol

6/1 = Gym day; 3 miles on the treadmill and 40 minutes of strength training
    6/2 = 6 miles
    6/3 =

My run this morning can only be described as sucktastic. I have been fighting this lingering headache for 24 hours and woke up this morning with a crappy sore throat. I thought it was allergies so I downed some allergy medication and laced up my running shoes. Four miles into my run I started feeling truly terrible. Allergies plus running in 78 degrees and 91% humidity? I hope so. I refuse to be sick!

(June miles to date) 9/150 (June goal miles)

I really can't afford it - even with two jobs. Stupid college student loan debt from my Masters degree is killing me. I splurged on a half marathon in December and I will occasional sign up for inexpensive local races. For example, there is a monthly fun 5k run near me that only cost $1.

@lporter229 Thank you! My marathon is October 8th (Long Beach, CA)...yeah I know, I'm well ahead of schedule (maybe too far ahead?), but my mileage was already practically there as it was, and so I think taking it steady and getting in more long runs, with a cutback week every fourth week, should see me in relatively good shape come race day.

Hmmm... it seems like all the local races around here are at least $40 for 5ks. At least double for half marathons. I wish there were cheaper ones.

Maybe I need to start a fund and put a little bit of money in every month to pay for races. That way I won't feel guilty about it.

Did 3 miles today. It was 80 degrees, but not that humid so it felt pretty good!

@elise4270 ha ha sounds like when Skip borrows my watch, except I run 5 miles and burn like 10 calories! ha ha I'm rolling here reading around your pp towel! Hey Skip takes 2 changes of clothes to meets so when she has an accident during a race she can change. When she comes over to me at a meet before I let her sit on my lap I say "did you pee?" "oh yeah I better sit next to you" OMG

    Woohoo National Donut Day!

    Ahhahaha! Oh love that Skip!

Budgeting is a complex subject that is mostly off-topic here. I've spent a lot of intellectual effort over the past decade getting my budget right. What I've found is that the critical part of budgeting is choosing what categories you will use. You want categories that mean something to you, and help you control your expenditures. In broad theory, you could have a budget with one category, "spending money." Most people wouldn't find that very helpful.

I use a zero based budget, which means ever dollar I have in checking, savings, and cash is assigned to a budget category at any point in time. One of the advantages of this type of system is that if I have money in a budget category, I know I can spend that money on its intended purpose. Today, if I want to. (Many details omitted as off-topic.)

In my budget, I have a Fitness category that I conceive as being used for race entry fees, GU, Nuun, and other stuff that purely supports running. (Shoes come out of the clothing category. Travel comes out of the vacation category. Other details omitted.) So I wanted to sign up for the Canandaigua Classic Half last Saturday, and I didn't have enough money in the Fitness category. I could do one of three things: 1) not sign up, 2) re-allocate funds between categories, effectively deciding to not spend money on something else in order to run the race, or 3) use a different category. #1 or #2 would be my most common reaction to a general spending want, but I happened to have enough in my Fun Money category (reserved for stuff I want but don't need and can't logically justify), so I did #3 and used Fun Money for the Canandaigua entry fee.

New month, more money got added to the Fitness category, and I could use it for the lower advanced rate registration for the Oak Tree Half Marathon. So from a budget perspective, I was able to add Oak Tree to my race list yesterday.

And in retirement, I have more time . . . so things change. When I was working, I didn't have time to travel to many races. Now, I have time; and how much I can/want to fund the vacation category is the limit on my travel for races.

    1/6 - 3.6
    2/6 - 4.9

    Total - 8.5/90

@zdyb23456 Im new to races so im only signing up for those that are not more than about 10-15 miles away so keeping travel costs to a minimum. The most expensive race I have signed up for has been the Brighton Marathon next April which was £65 so that was my 'fun' budget for the month spent. Apart from that I have my budget and so if a race is too expensive i dont enter it

    Hello June runners!

It was a lovely morning. I took the dog and ran what I could. She's a terrible pacer. :)

Priceless! I tried running with my dog. She can't make up her mind which breed she wants to be on a run. One minute she's "herding" me, and the next she's attacking my water bottle to "protect" me!

Ha! I think mine can't decide if she's the dog or the sled. :) One minute it's all out pulling and the next it's hitting the brakes and being dragged behind.

Now this is an ideal way to budget. In this day and age I imagine you are not using the envelope method..... How do you accomplish this segregation? Obviously you are not sharing an account, which makes budgeting impossible because SOMEONE is always spending on how they feel.

ETA My guess is Being single/retired allows you to take time and plan in an Excel file?

    June 1 – 6.0 miles Temp: 84°F Humidity: 52%
    June 2 – 6.0 miles w/6 x 400m intervals Temp: 80°F Humidity: 80%

    Total: 12 miles/100 miles

    Races:
June 23 – St. Pete Beach Series, Race #1, 5K
July 21 - St. Pete Beach Series, Race #2, 5K
August 5 – Great Brain Wash 5K Obstacle Run, St. Pete, FL
August 18 - St. Pete Beach Series, Race #3, 5K
September 16 – Samoa Challenge (Thin Mint Sprint 5K and a Tagalong Trot 1 mile), Safety Harbor, FL
November 18 – Insane Inflatable 5K Obstacle Run, Tampa, FL

Do interval runs ever get easier?!! I felt good after the easy 2-mile warm up, in spite of the humidity. However, even by the 3rd interval, I was soaked in sweat and wanted to die! I’m really not a fast runner. I’m part of Team Turtle: We’re Slow as Shell! So, when I do have to pick up the pace, my body really hates me. I think I spend the entire time coaxing my legs, my butt, my heart, and my lungs not to quit. I’m somewhere between cheerleader and used car salesman, somewhere between encouraging myself to go a little faster for a little bit longer and outright lying to myself about when I can quit, lol! But I did it and did the 2-mile easy run home, thanking God for the overcast skies and red lights!

The first interval will never get easier. As your running ability improves, you just run it faster for the same level of difficulty. However, as your stamina improves the 3rd and subsequent intervals will seem easier than they did today. It will also help if you get lower humidity to run the intervals; a workout that is tough but satisfying at 75º F with 25% humidity could be insanely tough and almost torture at 80º F with 80% humidity.

My wife and I do basically the same thing as @MobyCarp , we have like 5 checking accounts and 3-4 savings accounts where all the money gets passed around. If you do it right the process is very easy and has not fees or anything like that and it keeps all the categories separate so you can't pull extra from one by accident.
