June 2017 Running Challenge

11 miles @9:10 pace. I wasn't pushing it too much. I've logged into my calendar my marathon training plan. It's called FIRST marathon plan and is a less is more approach. Three runs a week, one intervals, one tempo run and one long run. There are two 20 mile long runs before the marathon. The plan highly suggest two more cardio workouts a week but no running ones. The interval workouts have a good speed demand 30 to 40 seconds under 10k race pace.6

You do what you have to. Hubby came home with a treadmill for me yesterday, lol! It bothers him to see me running in the heat, and I'm too stubborn to join a gym or get a treadmill myself!
As long as you're not seeing any ill effects, keep going.4 -

Do interval runs ever get easier?!! I felt good after the easy 2-mile warm up, in spite of the humidity. However, even by the 3rd interval, I was soaked in sweat and wanted to die! I’m really not a fast runner. I’m part of Team Turtle: We’re Slow as Shell! So, when I do have to pick up the pace, my body really hates me. I think I spend the entire time coaxing my legs, my butt, my heart, and my lungs not to quit. I’m somewhere between cheerleader and used car salesman, somewhere between encouraging myself to go a little faster for a little bit longer and outright lying to myself about when I can quit, lol! But I did it and did the 2-mile easy run home, thanking God for the overcast skies and red lights!
The first interval will never get easier. As your running ability improves, you just run it faster for the same level of difficulty. However, as your stamina improves the 3rd and subsequent intervals will seem easier than they did today. It will also help if you get lower humidity to run the intervals; a workout that is tough but satisfying at 75º F with 25% humidity could be insanely tough and almost torture at 80º F with 80% humidity.
I hope I'll get better at them and that I'll see some results from my efforts. I just spent the last few months working on my distance and slowly but surely going from 3 runs a week to 5. I'm 50 years old and wasn't very athletic in my youth so I'm a bit paranoid about injury. I am a little surprised that I don't feel awful today since we were busy at work last night and I was up and down stairs quite a bit.
As for the humidity, that's about the normal from now until October. Hubby brought home a treadmill yesterday for me. I may have to resort to it from time to time. I chickened out of running in the summer last year. If it's an especially ugly summer this, midnight may become my favorite time of day!

Can I rant a little about *kitten* drivers who don't pay attention at crosswalks? Ughhhhhhh. A red light and there was some jerk turning right -- not paying attention at all! The crosswalk gave me the green light to cross and the guy just kept inching out into the intersection not even looking to the right for pedestrians. I was jumping up and down waving trying to get him to look over at the people trying to cross the street- who had the rightaway! Never once looked in my direction before turning right -- even though all the other drivers at the light saw me. And this was right by an elementary school! This is the third time this had happened in two weeks at this intersection. Some little kid is going to get hurt walking to school.
*end rant*
On a lighter note, good luck to everyone who is racing this weekend!

Really nice long run this morning. After a few sprinkles, it cleared up and was beautiful and just cool enough to keep us comfortable. I dragged myself to the 7:00 run instead of 8:00 and it was nice to have some new faces to run with and chat with. 1/10th of the way to goal already

K- so, definitely to the point of anxiety before my first ever half marathon tomorrow. It doesn't help, that based on location, I am packing this morning because we are spending the night tonight, and then I am working about half way between all week. So packing for running adventure and work week, and I am certain I am forgetting something very important.... ugh....
On the bright side, one of our other friends wanted an adventure and is traveling with us. She is a massage therapist. Feeling pretty VIP to have our own personal massage therapist post race!
But seriously, what am I forgetting?6 -
6/1- REST
6/2- 5.2 Miles
6/30 19
Total: 24.2
Goal for June. Finish Marathon training well, taper well and run Grandma's well
Nominal mileage goal: 100
Today's notes: Today's assignment was 20 miles with the last 6 at GMP. Due to poor hydration planning leading to cramping and higher HR, that didn't happen. I got in 19 miles, and mile 19 was a total *kitten* show. I posted all about it in my thread on training for my first marathon. Needless to say, I'm disappointed with myself right now, for stupid mistakes, but glad I was able to get 19 miles in despite my stupidity.
Have a runderful day all!
Edit to add: My wife knows how to help get me out of my minor funk from a not so great run... and I quote "why don't you see if there's a massage available this evening, little man and I can go grocery shopping and pick you up when you're done" She knew I was thinking about looking at booking tomorrow, and thought it would cheer me up. Yup, I married a winner....

I love that so many of our runners are getting thier first taste of the racing experience.
Y'all remember. It just a bunch of runners, just like if everyone in this group showed up to run it with you.
Heck, I do that with my regular runs!
Good luck all! We're anxious for your race reports!7 -
Sorry your run didn't fo as planned @MNLittleFinn . It happens to all of us at some point. Chalk it up as a learning experience and keep moving forward!
@Elise4270 - I know, right?? I usually don't check in on the weekends, but I am so excited to be living vicariously through everyone racing this weekend, especially the first timers. Just checking in to see the reports!3 -

Well, I survived the Hospital Hill Half Marathon today! I'm pretty pleased with my pace, all things considered. I did not seem to suffer any due to the 5k last night. Instead it was the heat an humidity. Warmest running day yet this year, with full, sticky, humidity. My HR was hard to keep down the last couple miles. It was hard on everyone. I hope nobody got hurt out there today.
My pace was surprisingly quick the first 5-6 miles, even though I ran within the same target HR range for my normal long runs. Things started slowing down later though. Probably heat. Might also just be that I don't have that sort of endurance at that pace yet. Maybe both.
Garmin put me at a 3:09 finish. Given the heat and humidity I was expecting somewhere in the 3:15 to 3:20 range. So it was still a faster than expected pace.
I think I need some pickle juice now...
6/1 - rest

@lporter229 @WhatMeRunning thanks.
It sucked, but it was thr last LR of the cycle, coming off not great sleep and bad hydration. The first 18 miles were fine, so I'm focusing on that. I have a feeling I'll swing back and forth how I feel, agonizing over the run, as taper kicks in. Still ran it sub 9:30 pace though, so I'm still pretty sure I have a chance at my stretch goal for race day, with proper taper, nutrition and hysration...... let the overanalyzing said doubt and question begin!6 -

A nice easy run today, which was just what I needed both physically and time-wise. I had to be done running and working out early today. I had customers stopping by to pick up eggs, I have some projects that need attention for my Etsy store, and we should be pretty busy again tonight at work. Yeah, it’s a special kind of life.

So my first June run was today... It was supposed to be last night but hubby treated me to date night which included wine and desert . I planned on getting up early but overslept all the way to 8am. I have not slept past 6am in the past 10 years!!! So I scrambled to get ready and skipped breakfast. My broken in running shoes were upstairs so instead of going to get them I decided to try out new ones (same shoes as the other ones, just new). When I got to the park it was already 80 degrees outside and very humid. Needless to say, every step of the 4 miles sucked. I was hungry, the shoes were pinching me, I got a stitch mile 3 and my headphones died too.
I hope everyone else is having a better June. Good luck to all that are having races this weekend! I am running my second 5k tomorrow.
June Goal: 60 Miles
6/3 - 4.25 miles

I was supposed to be racing today, but there wasn't enough interest and last week I got the email telling me the race was cancelled. Never mind, I thought, there's a 5k very local to me on Sunday, I'll run that instead. Went to sign up and it's sold out.
So I went for a nine-mile run instead. Kept it at a nice and steady 10:00m pace. I normally run a bit faster than that because I've been concentrating on getting under an hour for a 10k, but thought today I'd go for a longer, slower run.
6/1 - 6.5 miles
6/2 - rest day
6/3 - 9 miles
My next race is on Thursday night and it's the J P Morgan Corporate Challenge (3.5 miles). I'm in a team of 90 runners from my company and we are definitely concentrating on the social side of things.4 -

@louubelle16 - Instead of reporting 4.97 miles, consider reporting 8.00 kilometers. You're welcome.
@MNLittleFinn - This stuff happens on challenging long assignments. I lost count of the times last year I failed to complete assignments of the form 1-3 miles easy, 2 x (4 miles MP, 1 mile T), 1-2 miles easy. Then this year when they started rolling around in lower humidity, they were achievable again. Weather matters. It matters on race day, too.
@juliet3455 - The documentation on Garmin says it does elevation from an altimeter if your watch has one, or from GPS if your watch doesn't. Mine doesn't have an altimeter, and I've always wondered about routes crossing the Genesee River, such as where the Rochester Marathon goes down to the foot bridge by Seneca Park Zoo. Does the adjustment understand where the bridge is, or does it take me down to river level?
I got my answer to that on a run along the Charles River in Boston. Most of the run was 20 feet above sea level. Every time I was on a bridge, the Garmin elevation chart took me right down to sea level. But when I look at Strava (same data, recorded by the same watch), that elevation chart understood the bridges and even picked up the pedestrian ramp onto one of the bridges properly. At this point, I'd trust the Strava elevation numbers more than the Garmin numbers; any time I run over an overpass or on a road that goes under an overpass, I don't know what elevation Garmin has for me.5 -

June Running Totals (miles)
6/1 – 8.25 warm up, speed work, cool down
6/2 – rest day
6/3 – 12.18 solo + group run
June total to date – 20.43
Nominal Challenge Goal – 230 miles
Real Goals: Stay healthy. Train toward Rochester Marathon. Run McMullen Mile in under 5:50 on June 9. Run Medved 5K to Cure ALS in under 20:00 on June 18.
Today's notes – Today was a Waffle Run celebrating the spring training session. Directions were to wear your race shirt, bring your medal, run 3, 5, or 8 miles, and have waffles afterward. If weather had been the only consideration, I would have worn a short sleeve shirt; but it was just cool enough to get away with a long sleeve tech shirt, so I wore my Boston race shirt.
My training plan said 12 miles today, so I went early and ran solo for an easy 4+ miles first, at an average pace of 7:51 per mile. When people showed up, I ended up running with the other 8/8:30 pacer (recovering from Buffalo) and a couple of guys from the 8:30 pace group. So we really should have targeted an 8:30 pace; it came in at an average of 8:19. I'll take this, because one of the 8:30 guys is an old running buddy of mine and we seem to always come in somewhere around an 8:15 pace when it's just the two of us.
Had some nice conversations, let some people who had never seen one look closely at my Boston medal, ate two waffles when I really should have stopped with one. But at least I was smart enough to use maple syrup instead of Nutella. It was a pleasant morning.
The training week came in at 51.75 miles, compared to a target of 51 miles. Close enough.

Thanks @MobyCarp. Speaking of weather. It was 10f cooler where the race will be than here today...... hope thst trend holds. There's a reason I have like 4 levels of goals, so i can be okay with however race day goes...... a lot of what my goal for the day will be depends on how the weather shakes out. Cool cloudy with a breeze, go for sub 4 for sure. Warmer, still make a go of it, but fall back on the fact that 4:15 is very doable..... I know, I know..... I'm over thinking....lol
Tomorrow is scheduled to be 5 miles, I may cut it to 4 or even 3. Coach said to focus on recovery now, so that's the plan!
Speaking of elevation o Strava vs Garmin. Strava gave me almost 170ft more elevation for today's run. Not sure which to believe. It was rough either way!1 -

YES. Hero.
@hanlonsk Good luck for your race! You'll smash it, I'm sure you've remembered everything.
@MNLittleFinn Your wife is an absolute star! Lucky you. I hope you don't beat yourself up too much about today. Remember, there are no mistakes, only lessons to be learned, and you've done that.
I have to say, I'm confused that anyone forgets a race they have booked. I plan my life around them the minute I've signed up

@katie2400 Treadmill or Trail, when you are first starting out what ever is comfortable is what you should do. The thing about the Real World outside is it offers more variety in terrain which leads to an improvement in overall body conditioning as you have to adjust on the fly to the change in footing/balance.
@amymoreorless Once you become a runner is when you realize how many bad habits drivers have and it makes you analyse your own Driving Habits, the Head Down buried in the Cellphone is the one that scares me the most.
@MNLittleFinn Yes You Married a winner. Don't forget to give her a hug and a surprise gift in return. It's rumoured un-expected Flowers or other trinkets are always winners. Now go share a glass of Pickle Juice with @WhatMeRunning to fix the hydration/electrolyte balance.
I agree with @lporter229 and @Elise4270 I am cheering everyone racing this weekend, especially the first timers.
Don't get nervous, relax and visualize that all the people around you arejust a bunch of runners, just like if everyone in this group showed up to run it with you.
Followed yesterdays 15 km with a 11.5km run today on tired legs. What we call the Peavey Loop and then I extended it out through what is know as the Freeland Trails. The Freeland Trails are all through the bush on the back shoulder of Misery Mountain so lots of rolling hills. We have had a lot of rain this spring so the grass and brush has been growing at a mad rate causing the Trails to be Overgrown already. Another 187m of elevation.
06/02 15.0 km – 145.0 km - 15.0km
06/03 11.5 km – 133.0 km - 26.5km – YTD 605.25

Did 7 miles today. It was hot! I finished, but my head phones got all wonky right at the end. I'm thinking all the sweating is ruining them. I might need more sport/sweat friendly headphones.
Next Saturday I finish out the training plan with a 13.1 mile run. I'm kinda scared, but I'm trusting the training. I've done 2 12milers already so I should be able to muster another 1.1 miles5 -
