    @RespectTheKitty :anxiously awaiting a race report...hope it went well!

    I'm sorry. There isn't going to be a race report. I didn't make it to the race. I had a massive anxiety attack and had to pull out at the last minute. I feel terrible, and very angry with myself. I've been miserable all day.

    Suffice to say, I won't be signing up for any more races. I'm just not comfortable doing them.

    To make matters worse, I seem to have hurt my back also.

    Bad day. Very, very bad day.

    @RespectTheKitty I'm sorry to hear about your panic attack! Races are supposed to be fun. If it gave you anxiety, then it wasn't worth it. Let your back heal and get back to running foe the enjoyment when you feel better!

    @RespectTheKitty - Sorry it didn't work out for you. I really am - But it doesn't seem like you "need" to race. You already seem to enjoy running just to be doing it. Many of us sign up for races just to motivate our lazy selves to get out the door and run. You do this well on your own. If the "thrill of the race" isn't for you - no big deal. You are awesome without it!

    @JessicaMcB I'm sorry to hear your run was so hard on you! That is some really pretty country you were in today. Here's hoping you can find races that don't endanger your knees any more than necessary!

    If you're going to stay with road marathons/ultras, then you HAVE to run Badwater sometime >:)

    @MNLittleFinn isn't that one eleventy billion degrees though? lol. Thanks, it was actually a pretty great day until we hit the power line descent, then it just got painful and embarassing. I honestly don't even see how that decline is safely raceable but I might just suck ;)

    Ok - I did not make my May goal. I had my lowest running mileage month in a long time (maybe a little mental lapse from my first full Marathon on 4/22). This month I have about 11-12 days that I will be on a hiking vacation with hikes going anywhere from 8 miles to over 20 miles per day. I doubt I will manage to run on many of those days. I think my goal needs to be to get up at 4am to get a run in before work at least one work day each week. I run on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays when I am off and other days when the opportunity arises. In order to increase my mileage in this summer heat, I am going to have to find a way to get some runs in on days I am working. I work long hours and need to be ready by 0630. So, no mileage total goal for this month (though I would like to still get in 80).

    June 2 - 6.7 miles of gravel road hills
    June 3 - 5 miles of even steeper gravel road hills.

    Total 11.7 miles

    I have a question for you all... how do you budget for race fees, travel, etc?

    I quit my job at the beginning of the year so money is tighter now than it was. When I was working I didn't have time to train or run races. Now I have time, but less money - lol. I think part of my problem is not only do I have to pay for the entry fee, but also a babysitter for my kids. So gets pretty expensive.

    I had a friend that paid for local races and said it came out of her entertainment budget.

    Many smaller races will have deals - and some larger ones do as well. For instance, the Carmel Marathon changed the weekend they are having their race next year, and so they offered the Marathon for $31 (it is going to be on the 31st of March) for one weekend if you signed up then. Usually one of the local 10 mile - HM races near me has a weekend that you can sign up for $20-25. Staying local also means you don't have to pay for travel and perhaps you can find a friend to watch your kids.

    Also - I just don't sign up for lots of races. I tend to look at them as motivators to run. I know many people here like to just run races - and that is great, but I don't like to pay money to run with lots of people all around me unless I am gunning for some sort of PR or fast for me time goal.

    Yeah, that's the one in Death Valley, if you run it, I'd drive down and help crew for you.

    There are a lot of declines that are raceable, but you're gonna go a lot slower than you think, is my guess....

    glad the rest of the day was pretty great...... wish I could say the same for mine :( mine.... I'm a big mope now.....

    @RespectTheKitty - I'm sorry the race turned out to be a bad experience for you. Maybe races just aren't your thing? That's okay. You're still a runner, and you're still lapping the couch potatoes. It took me a year or so to decide I liked races at all; I can see that they're not for everyone.

    Hang in there @MNLittleFinn- massages afterall! I think my revised racing plans will be to run Banff in two weeks and based on that time/knee experience I'll decide if I'll drop the coin on Edmonton in August to re-attempt for Boston, then go into training for the Calgary Marathon road ultra next summer shortly thereafter. If I survive all of this I'll consider Badwater for my long term stretch goal haha

    @JessicaMcB Sorry to hear about your knees. Any of the local PR or GP runners I know who have done the GCDR always talk about the " kitten power line descent " so based on their descriptions ( they are BQ qualified runners ) it has to be nasty scramble. It's one of the reason's I haven't been chasing the GCDR as really mean (long) down hills are just to hard on this body. If a runner ever gets injured on that section where they have to Medi Vac with a helicopter I can guarantee you that the course will be changed to avoid it ( it happened in the early years on Emperors and they changed mountains). Even though every one signs a waver they are not as Ironclad as most people believe. Nothing like a court case to make the insurance companies nervous and result in a mandated course change. Also having to arrange a medi vac pretty much ends an event as any able bodied person who comes up on them needs to be deployed to transport/assist the injured runner to a safe place for extraction.

    Maybe a Trail Event that doesn't have such a mean section would keep you inspired for the trails. Consider the Tumbler Ridge Emperor's challenge for next year. I believe that Laverna Emes in GC has done it, if you know her she might be a good resource for information. I think she has done every event around AB. I did a free run on Emperor's - Babcock Mountain last year and the downhill is sweet as it follows a Gas Plant access road so has a very gentle grade. The uphill has a few spots that make you say kitten but amazing sight lines. Sometimes you just have to stop and look behind you as that's where the best scenery is always hiding, great picture!!

    Hope you have a great experience in Banff.

    @RespectTheKitty I agree with everyone else - sorry that you had a panic attack! But glad that you made the decision not to try and push yourself into it causing more anxiety than anyone needs. I hope the back is just a stress reaction and will clear up quickly so you can get back out on some of the local running routes you are familiar with.

    @RespectTheKitty So sorry to hear about your anxiety having got the better of you on the day. I can relate, this was me for years. It's not now, and it won't always be you either but I still can't handle big races without medicating myself up to the eyeballs and that's not a good thing either. I love small races and although it takes some digging online to find them, I tend to prefer those. You might find the same one day? Anyway, admitting racing isn't for you is a big, brave step and that's more than ok. I hope your back recovers soon and you can get back in your running shoes soon.

    @Orphia Love the shirt! Definitely going to order one.

    No running for me today, but my legs feel so good I'm desperate to get out there! Must be good and follow my plan, must.not.get.injured.again.

    @RespectTheKitty take the good advice that tells you don't worry about the race, if you enjoy running you'll be back in the track and you'll have other chances, hope your back heal soon.

    @AmbitiousRooster If you're starting look into 80/20 running and maybe some training plan for the race, good luck!

    @JessicaMcB I wouldn't have dare, glad nothing bad happened.

    Hello all.
    June 4 - 4 miles
    Total for June 7.1/50

    Had to get out early as the heat and humidity in SE North Carolina are a *kitten*. I've heard the area called the armpit of the state and I would have to agree. Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

    Date :::: Miles :::: Cumulative
    06/01/17 :::: 2.4 :::: 2.4
    06/02/17 :::: 0.0 :::: 2.4
    06/03/17 :::: 8.4 :::: 10.7
    06/04/17 :::: 3.1 :::: 13.9
    Goal = 100 miles

    In before the rain starts. Although humid, it was pretty cool so not a bad run. I listened to a podcast of Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me, which always keeps me entertained.

    Looks like we are in for rain for the rest of today through Tuesday. Which includes the Corporate Challenge race Tuesday night, of course. I'm not feeling very committed to going through the hassle and logistics of that particular race if the weather isn't good. I plan to run/walk it with a co-worker though so not really planning on racing in any case.

    @RespectTheKitty I'm sorry about your panic attack. Don't feel badly if events are not your thing, but if you want to work towards it, I bet you could get some help in doing so. Whatever you do, I hope running continues to be a good outlet for you, as it really has been for me.
