@katharmonic Is it too late to sign up for this? I was going to sign up but I didn't see a team called Kelly's Courage Runners. I will just sign up with no team, but if your team is still available I would like to sign up for it.
Thanks so much @_nikkiwolf_ . Impressive they mailed it to France! I keep submitting miles too but I can't find anywhere to see how many we've logged individually or as a team.
@kgirlhart you should be able to still sign up. Try this:
You can join my Group/Team "Kelly's Courage Runners" at:

8 hot, humid and mega buggy miles. I made the mistake of running by a creek where I had to sprint through clouds of gnats. When I got home, I found 20 of them that had landed on me and then drowned in my sweat. Just Ewwwww.
Speaking of Ewwwww.... I have a sock question. My toenail situation is getting desperate on my two second toes. I keep getting blisters under the toenails. They are in a constant state of gross blackness at this point. I bought a pair of Balega "anti-blister" socks that do not have a seam at the toes. I tried them out today and it felt like my feet were encased in an oven. They were so hot! Any other suggestions?

I get bloody, black toenails on my big toe and next two beside. The big toe hits the top of the shoe and the other two are because the toes curl (hammer toes) and the nail hits the bottom of the shoe. I have bought silicon toe caps that I wear under my socks. The only trouble is that when the feet get damp or sweaty, they fall off and are uncomfortable. I had to stop about 10K into my half to take them off because it had gone under my foot, which added a couple of minutes to my race. I've thought about sewing or gluing them together to prevent them from sliding off, but haven't tried it. My toes are a little too small or they would work; I just can't find them tight enough. I also found that buying wide shoes or shoes with a big toe box helps, giving the toes more room to spread out. Good luck!2 -

@PastorVincent Nice speed workout
Sounds like your gym's dreadmills are a lot more entertaining than mine! I should really stop my gym membership, I'm paying for nothing... I was there once this year, trying to do the long run on the 'mill. I had the options of looking out of the window (nothing to see but the snowstorm) or to a TV screen somewhere on the wall to my left (getting a crink in my neck while watching a movie without sound, how fun...). Plus they have a rule that you have to leave cardio machines after max 30 minutes to give other people a chance to use them; the only sure way to circumvent that is coming late in the evening when the employees already went home and there's so few people that nobody will mind if you reset the counter all the time or hop from one machine to the next and back.
My gym is actually in the basement where I work. Really nice setup, even has in door track (12 laps to a mile! LOL), basketball and racket ball courts. So during bad weather, I can head down there on lunch break and do my thing. No time limit on dreadmill, but I can bearly survive 60 mins on that thing so does not matter much. The dreadmills do have TV stations complete with headphone (BT and wired) connections, but really 99% of the time I listen to audio books. I do the same on the dreadmill I have at home that is much less fancy. But only if the weather is well beyond my tolerance, for several days in a row.
Rather run in the rain and snow than do a dreadmill. Most days at least.

At one point I was on the sidewalk and had to pass someone walking in front of me. I called out, "On your left" and of course she moved to her left, causing me to run into her. Why are people so stupid?
Anyway, aside from that encounter, the run went well and my hip was just fine. My total so far for July is 32.75 miles.
Sounds like you found your problem! You hip pain was caused by your shoes.
New shoes actually change your stride a bit, and your foot placement a bit. Your body automagically adapts to the changes in the shoes and attempts to find the most efficient way to use them. This is a big reason why you never wear new shoes for the first time for a marathon. Your body has not had time to adjust and that can cause injury, pain, and discomfort.
It is recommended by those that know more than I that you change up brands when you can, but I would avoid that one that causes you hip issues, for the rest of your life2 -
@amymoreorless for socks I use Under Armor Heat Gear socks ( http://amzn.to/2uj2NvX ). I doubt they are anything special, but I started buying them because they are made for runners and do not seem to cause me any issues. They dry quickly, and since I get caught in the rain from time to time, that is helpful.
I have one black toenail left over from the Marathon... that just seems to be par for the course when you are a distance runner.2 -

My first run today with my heart rate monitor. Ran 5.1 foundation run where it was supposed to be 5 minutes zone 1 30 minutes zone 2 and 5 minutes zone 1. According to my app I spent 80% of the run in zone 3 which was disappointing because I thought my pace and feel were good. Thanks to @PastorVincent and @MobyCarp I had some zone number to compare to the number they were using and I also used the MacMillian calculator to recalculate my pace. I was doing much better with these new numbers and now they also fit MacMillian and they make sense when further compared to perceived effort.(If I can run a half-marathon at close to an 8:30 pace I should be in zone 2 running at over 9 minutes a mile) I also figured out how to adjust my app so the zones correspond to the heart-rates appropriately. Now I should be able to look at my next run and see if there needs to be more adjusting.
On another note, had some excitement today as I was again the target of an egg on my run. At the same location and the same time as my last incident. Thus time I had just crossed an intersection and a black truck (last time it was a white car.) went through the intersection behind me. Smack an egg hit me in my back. My immediate thought is "You must be kidding me, there is no way this happened again." My brother in-law is a Lieutenant with the State Police and lives in my town. Should this happen again, I will get the license plate and it will not happen ever again.
Thanks again Vincent and Moby.

@cburke8909 that is the craziest thing about the egg.
About black toe nails. I have had 3, one on my toe next to my pinky toe, it never fell off but it looked like the color of a plum. My big toe lost a nail last year that literally took a year a grow back in normal, well that bad boy turned purple again about 2 weeks ago. But what is weird about that toe is that years ago some stupid woman hit me with a shopping cart and every so often it will break way down low and the nail salon lady will start putting gel on it until it's long enough for her to cut it without it killing me.
I wear under amour socks which I like and have never had a blister. Skip wears Swift Wick and swears by them.3 -

@skippygirlsmom Thanks for sharing which socks work for you and Skip. I'm in need of some good summer socks. I usually wear smartwool, but they seem so hot- even the thin ones. I hate hot feet. I have a few pair of soft sole, bit they are wearing thin.
May or may not be running related:
My guess it isn't since I haven't run since Saturday. My ongoing problem with my right butt/leg ("beg" as Whitney put it- yes I had to watch it). Which seems to be nerve irritation and angry muscles. Maybe some nerve damage causing the muscles to be angry. That's my understanding from the doc. Nerve impingement.
Usually it gets tight and painful. I stretch and stretch, psoas, piriformis, medial glute, inner thigh adductor- it eases up. But today it's now twitchy. My guess is nerve irritation and not normal aches and groans from exercise.
So just in case anyone has advice, I'm asking. I'm kind of tired of it. Its about as annoying as the stress eye twitch.0 -
Its about as annoying as the stress eye twitch.
Ooooh, sorry, Elise. I have had an eye twitch in both eyes for over two years. The doc insists it is stress, but it is to the point of being torturous. You'd think I would get used to it, but because it is intermittent and varies from eye to eye throughout the day, I never do. At one point, it moved into my forehead for a few weeks, and I was about ready to be committed. Anyway, hugs. Hope the "beg" twitch ends soon.

Oh that's rough! Think I'll ice my butt.2 -
Hello group! I finally got in my groove of regular workouts again, so much I was going to try running even a mile after work. But add me to the "down, but not out" list. I was sitting on the ground vacuuming cat litter last night and all 20 lbs of vacuum fell over and directly hit my lumbar area. A sports med physician in my office gave me stretches/core stabilility and told me to do light walking to keep from stiffening up completely. Guess I'm going to go get on the treadmill as planned, just a different speed than I wanted. You all are doing great and keep inspiring me.0

5 miler this morning. I need to start earlier...

July goal: 55 miles
7/2: 4.3 miles
7/3: 3.7 miles
7/4: 3.8 miles
7/5: 2.3 miles
7/9: 4.5 miles
7/11: 2.5 miles
7/12: 2.8 miles
23.9/55 miles
It was even hotter today than yesterday. I expected to have a slow, miserable run. I was pleasantly surprised that I had a great run. I enjoyed almost all of it. The last .8 miles kind of sucked, but the first part was great and I ran a little faster than I have been averaging lately. I considered not running because of the heat, but I'm glad I did it. I have to drive my mom to Dallas tomorrow (a 2.5 hour drive) for a doctor's appointment so I won't be able to get a run tomorrow. Besides, it is July in Texas. It will either be hot or miserably hot so I figure I might as well just get it done. It did occur to me today that I might be running a little faster just so I could be finished sooner.

@katharmonic Maybe the team is full. I got a message that said "sorry, you can't join this group". That's ok. I'm sure I can still sign up and donate to the cause.0

@kgirlhart it shouldn't be full, but I'm getting the same message when I go to it. If you do register as an individual that's great anyway. I can also manually add you to my team after you register if you message me your name and email address. But it doesn't matter too much in the end as there doesn't seem to be a team competition for miles.
Thanks for the support, regardless!0 -

They guarantee you won't get blisters (though I've had one during a 30km) and they are really cool in all senses of the word.

Afternoon run today for a total of 3.18 miles. It was too hot to go farther but I overslept this morning and wanted to do something today.
July totals: 26.6 / 605 -
7/1 - Rest Day
7/2 -Rest Day
7/3 - Rest Day
7/4 - 2.98 (Based on Garmin distance) for local 5K… time was 26:22; not a PR at all, but I haven't run at all since 6/24 and won't be fat adapted for awhile yet.
7/5 - 5.03 miles - not as fast as I planned
7/6 - 3.01 miles treadmill. Plan was for easy miles, and these were scary slow.
7/7 - Rest day
7/8 - 7.37 miles. New trail running shoes! Went out on a trail I haven't visited for awhile, was hot and very slow. Very tall grass in areas made this very difficult as well.
7/9 - Rest
7/10 - Rest
7/11 - 3.0 easy miles treadmill, very slow, before weight lifting. It's hot outside and it is just easy to run on the treadmill at the gym before lifting. I knew I was going to lose some speed when changing nutrition again, but this is really starting to scare me.
7/12 - 5.02 miles, still slower than I wanted.
Upcoming Races:
7/4/17 - Miner 5K
7/29/17 - Dr. Dash 10K
10/21/17 - Oregon Trail Run HM3
