Cute picture!!
This month we are trying to get our son started on his new life in another city. It's not easy! He just graduated college so finding an entry-level job where he can actually eat food and pay rent and pay off his student loans... ugh. When I was his age I wound up homeless more than once, and would rather not see him go through that.
I've been on a yoyo with weight for a few weeks. Focusing on non-scale victories. I really do feel and look better than I have in a long time, so I am okay with that.7 -

I have been on a "diet" my entire life it seems, but now that I am single AND an empty-nester, I have no one to point the finger out for my fails except me. This should be a lot easier than it is, but now I have the excuse of loneliness and "It's too hard to cook for one" as a new excuse. I have been making small life-style changes and it is paying off....50 pounds over a 2 year period, but some days the struggle is real!8

Start with baby steps--log your food, find a few meals that you like and have them frequently, seek opportunities to be active, get to know us on this thread and share your journey.

Trish - 50 lbs is an achievement to be very proud of. :flowerforyou:
Heather UK xxxxxxx4 -
Becca: It was a hard thing when my son went off to the Army, and he made the choice to join when he was past 25. I'm sure this will not be an easy transition for you, but I don't recommend getting pregnant again so your nest won't be empty. :noway: Just teasing. It will be a gradual process, but you and DH have a chance to have some adventures together. I hope you will choose something fun and get started right away. Going to our son's graduation from basic, and going back for his graduation from Special Forces School were good things for us. They helped us see how good this life choice was for him, and we felt much happier seeing him happy. It also gave us a little adventure.
Ginger: Your son is a cutie. I don't much like the cowboy boots with shorts, but the dislike is all based on my feeling that the boots would irritate bare legs. I imagine how I would feel and I don't think I'd like it. :flowerforyou:
trishayla: Losing 50 pounds over a 2 year time period is a great accomplishment. It is much healthier than yoyo dieting or starving and making yourself sick. Congratulations on a job well done. Do you have a goal weight in mind? Stop by here often for encouragement and support.
DS will be stopping by this afternoon on his way north. He has some things to do at the base at Fort Lewis and will fly back to Virginia where he is currently stationed. We'll miss him but his wife will be happy to have him back.

Lanette – Speaking of ‘pressed’ jeans; reminds me of my former/late boss who sent his jeans to the cleaners (whose parents lived next door to him for a while), so he would have a crease down the front and back and wore them with no socks and boat shoes. He always looked well put together (even with his beer gut).
I had a hysterectomy at 35; so I don’t have much body hair; I think I ‘have’ to shave once a month and that is usually only when it is hot and I would be wearing shorts or a bathing suit (which I have not had on this summer).
Ginger – my DYS will wear short with his work boots; which are just a little shorter than these cowboy boot and solid brown. He can pull it off, mainly because he walks with a swagger and that is more of what you see when you look at him. I’ve got 2 great-looking sons, if I do say so myself.
Meredith – Our DOGD called us last night after making her first MD appointment, on her own. She graduates in December and said it has just become all too real for her now. I told her ‘welcome to being an adult’. She said she thought schools (HS and college) should have classes to prepare, first in HS what to expect in college; 2nd from college to prepare them for going out into the ‘real world’. I told her, even if she had to cut class, she really needed to go to a ‘job fair’ that usually get put on every semester. She agreed. Her boyfriend is going to be taking the ‘test’ that will allow him to get into PT school. There are 3 in the state beside UGA, which he doesn’t want to go to because of its size.
Becca – Enjoy the next 2 weeks while baby boy is still home. He will be a ‘different man’ the next time he comes home as he was as a ‘boy/teenage child’. You’ll be very proud of him, I am sure. I cried a lot when my DYS went off to college (although I was working at the time); same when he transfer ‘out of state’ to Mississippi State; I got tired of crying so I just enjoy the few times I get to see him. When we go out, it will have been a full year since I have seen him and his family.
Katla – I have a pair of cowboy boots, and surprisingly, they are my most comfortable shoes I have to my name.

I've been teaching three of my granddaughters to sew. This picture is of one of the 9 yr olds in her project. Her first sewn from a pattern dress. She did a fabulous job. I'm really proud of her.

Beautiful house and wonderful skill you are teaching them plus the memories you are making with them. Win win.
Barbie, the nurse in me wants to know how they can make a cell phone work in the pacemaker check. Both my parents had a pacemaker. Mom knew that Dad did his phone checks by himself but she said you have to be in them medical field to do the check when she had hers after Dad died. I think it was her way of baking sure I was over there. I still have that huge magnet from the phone check on my refrigerator. If you put something under that magnet you know it can't fall off,
We had a sister day today. We gave a locally owned ice cream shop. They make their own. So we had a turtle sundae and a good talk. Both my sister and Mom were preschool teachers and there was a 3 year old little girl there with her little brother so she always has a good time when she sees kids.
I don't wear shorts either. I used to have the attitude that the only difference in my fat kegs wearing jeans and another fat lady wearing shirts was that she was comfortable and I was hot. So I wore them. But my thunder thighs are just to big to wear them. Even when I was in a size 12 my thighs were still huge.

Hi Trish!
1) Clear out some freezer space.
2) cook a small pot of something you like - spaghetti sauce, (heavy on the vegetables), stew, whatever you like that freezes.
3) fill zip-lock bowls with single servings - freeze.
Repeat with three or four things, over several days, and not only will you have proper food to eat that fits into your diet plan - but, you won't have to cook very often. Just label everything with what it is and a date - it's sometimes hard to tell what is in those bowls if you don't write on the top.
I recommend soups, stew, Italian sauce (you can serve with steamed squash if you are low carb) or anything that won't dry out too horribly in the microwave.
It's not a perfect solution - but, it might replace fast food a few nights a week... AND finding creative recipes that are tasty and that microwave well is something to do now that the kids are gone...
Good luck!

Okay, who is holding the boot to give me a kick?! I have just been a crazy person with "treats" before bed since July started. Break out the butt-kickers!
Hitting the hay early tonight; up early in the morning to walk at first light (5:30) and get my breakfast down before kids arrive. My lunch hours the next couple of days will be meal planning and making out shopping lists. Not just for the kids but for me. I have been slacking and I need to give myself a good shaking!
Tere- What an absolutely beautiful photo! You are just glowing and alive in that photo!
Karen VA- So sorry to hear about FArley Hope he and your family has peace in his last days/hours with you! Olivia is just gorgeous! Those eyes! Such a doll baby!
Becca- The midlife poem was spot on! Loved it! I also love the "Take what you need" poster and your son as a middle schooler was adorable! You have posted more recent pics of him, but it is fun to see the "baby" face and remember he is grown!
Machka- I think you were the one who mentioned hot flashes! I swear, lately, I feel I have been on again off again with clothes. I go from insanely hot and sweaty to "geez-what-did-I-do-with-my-jacket"?
Ginger- If anyone could make shorts and cowboy boots a good fashion choice, it would be your darling son! LOL! Cute pic!
Cheri- HEllo! I was just wondering how you have been doing! So glad to hear things are going well for you and the family! Stay cool in Sweltering Texas!
Shorts- My legs are bigger than they used to be; but fortunately they are not jiggly, unfortunately I have very veiny legs from working on my feet for so many years. I am sure the extra weight I am carrying is not helping the veins either. I will wear shorts when I am home and hanging with the kids, but I tend to put on pants or a long skirt/dress if I am going some where. Yoga capris are like my second skin most days.
Well, I am going beddy bye. Going to fall asleep planning for success and good choices tomorrow. Thinking of you all. Allie feel better! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)2 -
Love the picture of Olivia. What a doll. So fun to see new baby pictures as my youngest DGD is 10 now.
I had a huge floater in one eye and my retina specialist took it out when I had cataract surgery.
Love the cowboy in shorts and also the boot sandals.
Every day I think this is the day I will get back on track but it seems like it keeps me from coughing if I have something to eat. Maybe that is just an excuse. Now I'm wondering if I should see Dr. I got sick a week ago but am feeling better.
Have a great evening ladies.

Joyce, Jake got his first implanted defibrillator/pacemaker in 2006. The remote monitoring then required that he place a device over his chest that was connected to the device to transmit. That device was connected just like a land line phone. About six years later he got a fancier more modern implanted device and the remote monitoring through the phone lines transmitted often without any help from Jake. Recently Boston Scientific updated their remote monitoring device to allow monitoring via cell phone. We haven't seen it or installed it but he met with the medical professional who monitors and adjusts his device in the office once or twice a year. It is amazing.

I'll post my actual stats tomorrow - rode hm from wk, nice day

I walked by myself for almost two hours this morning before we went to pick up the dogs. They were happy to see us and Bessie seemed to be fine. This was her first sleep-over since she came to us. Now we'll feel safer if we have to go away again and board them.

Machka- I think you were the one who mentioned hot flashes! I swear, lately, I feel I have been on again off again with clothes. I go from insanely hot and sweaty to "geez-what-did-I-do-with-my-jacket"?
Yeah, that was me.
For a year or so, I was only going through them in the week before my periods started, but in the last 6 weeks or so, it's been just about every day.
Unfortunately they are also combined with a bit of nausea, which I'm sure is hormone-related, similar to morning sickness. However, I just discovered that there is a morning sickness relief pill which consists of ginger and Vit B6. I have been using ginger, and it seems to help a bit, but I might also look into Vit B6.
Evening Primrose Oil also seems to help a little bit.
And fortunately, everyone at work was issued small desktop fans which are USB powered, so mine is on and off and on and off all day long.

Hello Darling Divas!
Not much to report... got the plank up to 1 minute... so that is good. Nothing like a measurable goal...
Re: Shorts... My standard “uniform” at home is shorts and a sports bra... although I have taken to wearing a long-line girdle under them. I figure compression from the ribs to the knee can only help the sag and flop. The “uniform” is because we keep our AC set to about 80. It keeps us from dying of heat prostration without breaking the bank. Now, outdoors? No shorts on this girl. I have some serious jelly-thighs right now... *sighs* Maybe someday. For now, it’s pretty much full-body coverage, all the way.
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
Tere – I wish I could give up bread for good... the best I can do is eat less of it. Every once in a while it calls to me... That photo is fabulous!
Sue – Your baby goats sound pretty smart. Hope your inflammation drops without any special intervention by the doc.
Joyce – I am glad Monsieur Mouse is feeling better. Life has a Pause button? I wish... *sighs*
Pip - *waves* Oh my stars... 1300 calories? Do you just eat constantly? I need to dust off my bike... although it’s a little warm for outdoor exertion, here.
Rori – Hugs!
Sue – Thank you! Hope you feel better, soon. Summer colds are awful. And don’t make me come down there... use water as something to keep you from coughing, Sweetie. Hugs!
Kim – I feel you on the “and one more” thing... that is what happened to me (repeatedly) with the chocolate before I moved the bag. You will get back on track...
Barbie – LOL – water and reduced sodium – it’s like “take two aspirin and call me in the morning.” Hurray for the phone app! Land lines are ridiculously expensive – when everybody has a cell phone.
Machka – Take a deep breath... you can only do one thing at a time... And so sorry about the icky hot flashes...
Lenora – The scale is a big fat liar... never forget that. It’s all about pants size, now... and you look MAHVELOUS. And after another 50 lbs or so, I MAY have liposuction on my thighs... Right now – there isn’t a bucket big enough... LOL. Easily half of the aforementioned 50 lbs is located on my thighs.
Becca – I also love the Take what you Need poster. And yep – Husbands. When mine gets all snarky about visiting MY Sister, I just pat his hand and tell him I will see him whenever I get home... he usually stops short, then, and reconsiders... because he thinks my Sister has some kind of weird mind-control over me, and he doesn’t want me there without him. *insert eye-roll here* Oh your boy was a cutie! Still is. :]
Karen/VA – Hope the floater settles down, soon. I have one – not enormous – but, irritating, on occasion. It does actually float – so it moves out of my vision every so often. I hardly notice it, anymore.
Leigh – Whoot! Cheering you on to the big 7-0.
Ginger – those boots... LOL. Your boy is awfully cute, even if he is doing boots and shorts...
Kate – Hugs!
Allie – Thinking Healing thoughts for you. ((Hugs!))
Heather – Sorry about the cheap chocolate! I still swear I am coming to your house for dinner one of these days.
Chris – HUGS!!
NYKaren – I am... truly I am. It is fabulous to FINALLY see the scale moving, again. Grilled Peaches? How have I missed this?
Margaret – Hugs!
Ms. Perez – Sorry Sugar, I have managed to miss your name. Hugs!
Cheri – I am so glad you have found your happy place! And gratz on DH’s promotion. Give him a squeeze from us!
Katla – Thanks! I am just glad to be able to wear clothes from pretty much anywhere, now – and to be able to move around better. But, hey, it IS nice to be able to maintain my 100 lb lead on DH... LOL. Have to keep at it, or he might catch up with me.
Lanette – Thank you! When I am dressed and packed tightly into my spandex, I think I look great, too.. lol. It’s only the floppy bits that discourage me, when I think about it, too much.
Marti – Hugs!
Meredith – Finding a job that can actually cover living expenses is a lot harder than it should be! I hope you and your boy get it all figured out. And again, pay no attention to the number on the scale... if your clothes are getting looser, and your face is getting thinner – it’s all good.
Lois - *waves*
Trisha – Diets do not work. Alas, you have to change your life... once you wrap your head around that, it will all fall into place. As Barbie said, baby steps... small changes that you can keep forever... The trick is to do only stuff that you will never stop doing... cause once you stop, the weight just rolls right back over you.
Marcelyn – Well, it’s a great thing that you are keeping up on your Grandmotherly duties. Your girl looks fantastic in her project... and very proud. Nice work!
Kelly – I got the boot... and I know exactly how to use it... Treats before bed were my problem, too. Please step away from the chocolate! Or move the bag... Hope you figure something out. ((Hugs and kicks!))
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
Leftover curried lentils for dinner... See you all before bed. Going for more planks, tonight, I think...
Hugs for everybody!

Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .
Good Evening my dear Friends,
KarenVA, thanks for the Olivia fix. She is just beautiful and I love those eyes. Good luck with your eyes. (((Hugs)))
Joyce, I love the story about the two kids that met later at church camp.
Pitegny, congrats on the weight….or I should say, lack of it. Keep it up!!
Ginger, the Texas sandals are great. LOL
Allie, I sure hope you are feeling better! Feel free to share a few germs with “you know who”. Lol
Chris, sending prayers your way.
Cheri, so glad to hear you have found your happy place!!! Now stay there.
Marcelyn, your DGD did a great job and what a cutie she is.
I went to the beach this afternoon with a good friend that I haven’t seen in a while. She’s been in and out of town and going again soon as her daughter may have to have surgery. She has already had her large intestines removed and is again having blockage. I’m praying she will be okay. Missed my nap by going to the beach but it was worth it. The temp was around 90 but high humidity so heat index was right at 100. When we got to the beach it was fabulous with the sea breeze. The water is up to 82 so soon it won’t be refreshing.
to all the Newbies. Come often and join in the chat. This thing works!! Please sign your post with what you want to be called. It makes it easier for us to respond to you. Also a location is great, be it specific or general. We are happy to have you join us.
Sending love, good thoughts and cool sunshine to all of you.
I Love you

DJ – The heat index yesterday was 108° yesterday. Jenn is driving the loaner car as when they went to the beach over the 4th, the guy who was checking out her SUV told her to ‘park it’. He was surprised that she had not had a blowout! Big lump on tire and two of them down to the thread. Loaning her my car tomorrow because she has several appointments and the girls are going because 2 of them are for them. I haven’t been able to go outside because it is like when you open the door to your oven while wearing glasses … gets that hot. At least you have the sea breeze (even ‘if’ it is hot).
When y’all are praying for others; please keep my oldest dear granddaughter, Taylor, in your prayers. She just made her ‘own’ MD appointment (7/31) and so many things are going on in her body in the way of symptoms (which, of course, she has looked all of them up and decided that something is ‘terribly’ wrong with her and that is one of the reasons that no matter how hard she tries, can’t lose any weight. I think a lot of it is that she has just come to the cold, hard, realization that come December, she will graduate from college and has no earthly idea what she’ll be doing or where they’ll be or if her boyfriend gets into PT school. She’s late on her period and the first thing her step-mom asked was ‘if she was pregnant’. She says, ‘no way possible’. I’ve given her all the medical history that I am aware of on my side of the family and what I can remember about Louis’. Jenn messaged Taylor’s biological mother to ask if she can provide any information. She also gave her, Taylor’s phone number and email address. I did not think that was helpful at all. Taylor hasn’t spoken to her mother in several years and doesn’t want to. It’s not going to be ‘pretty’ if Taylor finds out that her mother now has her phone number. For the past 7+ years, Jenn has done everything a mother would do for their child. Taylor loves her as if she is her mother. I think ‘stress’ is a large part of what she is going through. I try to tell her that all she can do is ‘be prepared’ and have as much information as possible and to write down all her questions.
Got the sweetest email with pictures attached of DYS, DDnL#2, and DOYGD (I think that is right). Nothing in the actual message; but, opened up the attachment and it was a collage of several pictures of all of them. Then there was another .txt message, so I opened it up. About made me 'cry' ... "I love him because ... to go with each picture. He's lost weight! I think I upset him not long ago when I kidded him about the 'marriage weight beginning to show'. I guess he was going to 'show me'. I'm very proud of him.
Welcome to all the 'newbies' and all that. I'm going to bed now! Earliest I have been in bed in months! Hope I can fall asleep with no problems.
Night all!
