Feeling exhausted and so much to do. I bought a dress that totally surprised me. The dress was very reasonably priced but the jacket was a little more expensive.
Jheri did the birthday supper. Ham , scalloped potato, roasted fall vegetables, roasted carrots, a different cake and home made ice cream. Absolutely delicious. I am glad she had a plan because I did nothing. Well, I signed my name on a dollar store card and didn't write one word extra. Jason suggested that we do a joint party for his Dad and himself in November. Maybe I can handle that.
Finally got the requisition in for the cortisone again. I am hoping now that she has written a prescription for the year that I will be able to call and book my own appointments.
Went for a manicure. Silvery grey this time.
Loaded Jason's DJ equipment into our Toyota. I don't think that his cousin knows what he is doing for her. I hope they give him some token of appreciation. It's a big job.
The counselor's office phoned and I missed the call. I will call them tomorrow and get the appointment.
My thoughts keep getting derailed. Taking my fuzzy brain to bed. I made it to page 11.
I will be incommunicado this weekend.
Talk to you soon.

Poor Mike, all alone after the sheep herder takes his sheep back home. I hope he finds a home. Are you allowed to kill them up there. He would make a lot of meals. Sorry ladies. After seeing the carrot that came out of your garden Penny, I assume that all those, luscious veggies came out of store.
Mike should do just fine. Come winter, he'll have to dig though the snow to find food, but that's the life he's made for. He'll be lonely, but should be perfectly safe. The only predators here on the island that take animals his size are humans. And no, WE are not allowed to kill them. Reindeer in Scandinavia are semi-domesticated and each one is owned by somebody. The only person who can lawfully slaughter a reindeer is its owner.
For many people in the High North, reindeer meat is a staple, like ground beef in the US. They're not hunted, though. They get rounded up twice a year. In the spring, the calves still follow their mothers, so you can tell which calf belongs to whom and "brand" them accordingly. (Branding is done by cutting the owner's unique pattern of slits in the reindeer's ear.) In the fall, they get rounded up again, and that's when the owner will decide which reindeer he (or she!) wants to keep and which should go to slaughter. It's a tricky balance for them, because the meat is often their main source of income, but they count their wealth in the size and condition of their reindeer herd.
Ooops! I reverted into lecture mode there.
It's another cool day here so I've got a fire in the fireplace. When my husband arrives later today there will be a market for carbs, so I've got some sourdough bread rising in the warmest room in the house - the one where the water heater is. I have couple more currant bushes to harvest, but I don't know if I will. I realized I only had enough sugar to turn half of yesterday's harvest into jam. Informed my husband of that, so he could bring some more sugar this evening. What I didn't realize was that I'm also completely out of jars to put jam in. And the freezer is already full. What shall I do? Decisions, decisions...
Today will be a long-jog day. The county road here is one of my favorite places to jog. Nice gravel road with essentially no traffic. Yeah, it's one of those tracks where you run one way, then turn around and run back the same way. My sister hates those. She want to see new stuff throughout. But my view is so gorgeous I don't mind. Besides, running west I see one range of mountains in the distance, and running back east, I see another range. What's not to love? Here's a summer view (east) from my jogging track.

Penny Your vistas/views are always so stunning.
I was watching a fun travel/food show last night with DH (on Public tv, called "I'll Have What Phil's Having") it was making us want to travel! and you know I'm not much of a traveller! Anyway, next week's episode is Hong Kong which is getting us both excited...some day we want to go to Asia, yeah, someday!!
Well, my calendar is full of doc appointments, I'm seeing a chiropractor next week for my tendonitis and then to the hematologist, then my annual gyn and mammo appts. Feels a little like a full time job, just taking care of ME!!!
Now off to pack my bags, soup, snacks and water, gym bag and a very long to do list, I always take the scenic route to work to enjoy the start of the leaves turning colors.

Lenora- I'm sure I will get a fair shake.from what my attorney said she was in court last week and one of Tom's attorneys clients was yelling at her in court, that must have been a scene...
He should be there at court or his attorney should give all of his finances to mine or Tom will get fined for contempt of court..
My friend Patty is coming over after I get out of work tomorrow and will ask her opinion..I have the chair and ottoman in my room but thinking of maybe bringing the recliner in here and putting chair and ottoman out in living room..we are going to hang pictures and put up curtains in den and bedroom.4 -
Nice ... I've had my third week in a row where I've walked at least 30 km during the week.3

Getting over our blow up, though first thing this morning DH hadn't thrown it off. He was still very upset. I sent him off on a long walk and I went to get a blow dry. Also bought him some chocolate truffles!
Found an amazing bakery and bought some heavenly bread - seeded sourdough. Plus some other lunch stuff. The artisan food shops round here are amazing. Too tempting! Luckily the incredible cheese shop was closed.
DH came back in a better mood. The weather is stunning. We are walking up to the grandchildren this afternoon and will see what DDIL has planned. She and Max have a tennis session after school.
I will wear my blue tassels that they gave me.

JanetR - another Happy Anniversary wish. Your DH's itinerary flying all over the world was fascinating. Does he miss it?
Lenora - not long ago I went through my bookshelves and took several boxes of old paperbacks to the Goodwill. Strange, but after a couple months it looks like the holes on the bookshelf have mysteriously been refilled. Kind of like cleaning out the closet. Where does this stuff come from? I have a couple boxes of old pictures taking up space in the garage and need to sift them way down... a winter project!
Penny - I am not much of a jogger, but would love to accompany you on your run! Looks like the perfect spot.
Heather - aka Tassle Tastic - I looked up The Ginger Pig on the internet. Bet it was yummy! When DH and I used to travel a bit, we'd often get into the arguments too... I think being tired and overwhelmed by new surroundings and schedules had something to do with it. Hope things have settled down!
Mary - glad Brady is OK. What a cute photo of him and big brother! (?).
Another tip on posting here... I only post when I'm on the laptop, the tablet is too teensy. So I often open 2 sets of this group...one I can start a reply on, and the other one I go back and forth between the pages. Hopefully I don't get interrupted and forget which one was which. Writing it on a Word document then copying and pasting is the safest for me, but a bit more cumbersome. Thanks to all who explained why "new" posts appear when we go back a page or two.
I got Rosie puppy delivered to the vet late yesterday afternoon. The vet tech, Redd, who LOVES her and got a mini schnauzer a few weeks after we got Rosie was there ready to take her and give her hugs and kisses. Her surgery won't be done until this afternoon, but Redd said she wouldn't be caged all that time, she'd let her "help" in the office upstairs this morning. I'll bet not a lot of work will get done, lol. I pick her up tomorrow after 9. I sent along her blanket and one of her favorite Nylabone chews.
So we had a peaceful evening last night. I tend to get overwhelmed with caring for the older dog and keeping this puppy out of mischief, then I think of Gloria and other grandmas whose schedules and responsibilities were radically changed by once again having youngsters to care for. Puppies grow up fast and I need to stop being a wimp and ask DH to help more with the "going outside" duty. He does pretty well tho.
By the way, I stepped on the scale a couple days ago... I am down another pound since last month. I've lost just about a pound a month since I started the weight training in May without altering my diet very much. The Strong Women Stay Young mentioned this might happen. Still have some belly fat and/or extra skin around my waist, but that's OK and will be curious to see if this trend continues. I don't have a lot to lose, I did the majority of my weight loss with Weight Watchers over the years.
Happy Friday everyone!

Friday --
Today was one of those days where I didn't have enough hours in my work day to accomplish everything I planned to do.
I've taken on some extra training at work, which I ended up doing most of the day. The training will go on indefinitely with an hour on Thursday mornings, and then I do "homework" (lots of practice) on Fridays. Last Friday it went really quickly and I was finished in about an hour ... this week, not so much. It took all day, and I'll have to wrap it up on Tuesday.
But it's exciting to have this opportunity! So far, I'm thrilled! And it all came about from a brief, casual conversation with one of my coworkers while walking down the stairs to head our separate directions at lunch. I had mentioned what I was taking at uni, he asked if I'd be interested in dabbling more in our systems at work, I told him that I'm willing and that mention has been made that I might get involved "one day" but that nothing had ever come of it. About a week later, everything was set up for this.
And then this evening, my husband and I dressed up and went to the symphony. It was incredible! We thoroughly enjoyed it.
We go fairly frequently (roughly once a month or so), and we usually get seats high up in the back. Those seats are good because we can see the whole stage and the sound is excellent everywhere in the concert hall. Plus we get lots of stair climbing in. This time, however, we had seats in the front row just off centre right in front of the lead violin. It was fascinating seeing everything close up ... really close up!! We still like the seats in the back, but might get the seats in front now and then.
On the program:
MENDELSSOHN: Hebrides
BEETHOVEN: Piano Concerto No 4
SCULTHORPE: Port Essington
SCHUMANN: Symphony No 4 in D minor

Machka I was spoiled as a child. My parents had season tickets to the symphony (2nd balcony, partially obscured view- lol) and if mother or father didn’t go, I was the usual substitute. So I went usually 4 or 5 times a year. + the children symphony season via the public school system (sadly discontinued when I was in sixth grade) about the same number of concerts.
But I was REALLY spoiled because the orchestra was the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in its heyday with Sir George Solti conducting.
I’ve never quite adjusted to other Orchestras. Perhaps it is like one’s Mother’s cooking a childhood favourite dish. Other versions can be good, and enjoyable but nothing ever quite compares.

I too love the occasional close up seat I’ve gotten, how fun it is to watch the musicians up close! Your evening sound like it was quite splendid!5 -
When I cleared out all the books on my shelves that I hadn't read in ages and didn't expect to read again, it was a great feeling. I have some boxes of books in the closed that I have posted on Paperback Swap so I can get books to read through the website and I make great use of the public library. There is one bookshelf filled with books on two subjects important to both Jake and me and we plan "someday" to work together to thin down the collection. Jake has give many of his DVD's to the public library so other people can watch them.
The dogs and I walked for an hour before breakfast and will walk again after meditation. Then we take the pets to boarding and go off together for a lovely weekend away. I have someone else teaching my dance class this morning.
Lanette, congrats on your weight loss brought about by strength training.

I grew up listening to classical music ... my father, in particular, loves it and has a huge collection. But unfortunately we rarely went somewhere to see an orchestra. I'm not sure why not, although we did live in a number of small towns out in the middle of nowhere, so that might have been part of the reason.
In my 20s, I started going to the ballet and symphony with my ex-sister-in-law a couple times a year and enjoyed it. But then there were a bunch of life changes, more small towns out in the middle of nowhere, etc. ... and finally we ended up here and I expressed an interest in going to the symphony. To my surprise, my husband was all for it!
The orchestra here is great ... really impressive performances.
I do wonder, however, when we move again as we no doubt will at some point in the next 5 or 10 years ... will I enjoy the orchestra in the new place? Have I been spoiled?4 -
@Lagopus Penny Are dried currants useful for anything? Just thinking if you dried them and stored them in a bag in the freezer they wouldn't take up much room...

It has been a long time, but I’m pretty sure my mom’s oatmeal cookies were made with currants.2 -
Rye and Machka - I grew up singing in the choir so I'm spoiled, too. Spoiled rotten, even! When I'm at concerts and I'm NOT on the stage I feel I'm missing out on all the fun.
My jog was good and I'm back home now, cooling off. Mike and a couple of his sheep friends are now in the forest, just the other side of the fence around our yard. I'm sitting here at the dining table, looking out through our big picture window and seeing all these big white shaggy animals lurking among the trees. At least they aren't polar bears!

Nice suggestion Karen in VA, but it won't work for me. a) They don't dry very well. b) Even if they did, I couldn't get them dry before I have to leave the day after tomorrow. c) There's REALLY no room in my freezer.
Rye There's currants and currants. The currants your mother put in oatmeal cookies are almost certainly small dried seedless grapes. The currants I'm talking about are related to the gooseberry. They're full of seeds - which is one reason they aren't very appetizing when dried. They come in black, red, and white varieties. Mine are red and black, and it's the black ones I've made jam out of. If you've ever had Crème de Cassis, you know what I'm talking about.
/Penny, off to the shower!3 -
Penny There you go! I think you've solved your dilemma! Buy some vodka and make Creme de Cassis!4
-
I like your thinking, Karen!
Buying vodka isn't in the cards because I can't get to the bottle shop. But we happen to have a bottle of Polish vodka here that's been hanging around for at least a decade. It was a gift to my husband from a Polish colleague and has a cute little green parka with a zipper. (I'll have to get a pic.) But - heck - we don't drink vodka!
I also happen to have a big old laboratory flask with an airtight stopper, and with the house being allowed to cool when we're not here, I could just mix the berries and the booze and leave it here to steep until our next visit...
Sounds like a plan!

Penny: Lecture mode is fine with me. I learn a great deal from you and really look forward to your posts from "the North Pole." The system of selling off reindeer for meat seems sensible. My guess is that the males are more likely to be sold for meat. As a dedicated carnivore and animal lover, I accept the need for selling extra animals for meat. :ohwell:
Heather: Love your tassel earrings! They are very festive.
Lanette: Congratulations with your continuing weight loss. It seems as though your body is optimiizing itself.
Pat: Thanks for the compliments on the Halloween decorations. My moniker here is Katla, a made up name with some letters from my first name and some from my last name.
Barbie: Enjoy your weekend away from home.
DH got his MRI results from his MS doctor yesterday and there is no change since the last time. That means the MS is stable and not getting worse. Yay!!! There is mist rising from the river in the sunshine this morning and it is a lovely sight to see. DH says this means the air is colder than the water.
I'm planning to go on a trail ride with my former neighbor this morning so I'll be missing yoga. I hope things go well. She's bringing two of her horses and we're going to meet in a restaurant parking lot around 10. I'll ride with her from there. I plan to be at the parking lot a little early. I'll have my phone in my pocket so I can take pictures, but I'm not sure whether the conditions will favor photos. This is a trail that DH & I rode on our terratrikes several years ago. We probably managed half a mile or so uphill before turning back downhill then. Neither of us was fit enough to go farther. The trail is an uphill climb that goes for miles and eventually ends up in a little town called Vernonia, if I understand correctly. We won't get nearly that far on our ride today. We'll ride uphill for a while and then ride back downhill to the horse trailer.

Hi all. Just reporting that DH's surgery went well. They removed two masses which were "vascular malformations". he is doing well without much pain. The surgeons are using a new preoperative pain regimen that seems to work great. Very little opioid medications needed; I think he has had 2 since being home. The postop regime is 48 hours of strictly rotating Tylenol and motrin and it works! Take care, Meg from drizzly Omaha where we have had 3" of rain since yesterday.7
-
Good to hear, Meg. You're overdue for some good news :flowerforyou:
Same goes for Katla, with your DH's status continuing to be quo.
I was just out picking raspberries (surprise dessert for the Hubs tonight) and heard a weird hollow thunking sound. To my horror, Mike the reindeer had found a molded plastic deck chair and gone at it with his antlers. Did it look like a rival, I wonder? When upside down it had four prongs sticking up, about the same size and configuration as reindeer antlers. Anyway, he had gotten himself entangled in the chair!
Poor Mike! He thrashed and twisted, trying to get his opponent to give up and go away, but (being a stupid chair) it refused to back down gracefully. I said earlier that Mike would be okay all alone this winter, but I realized that a chair on his antlers could tip his energy expenditure balance toward starvation. What to do! I didn't dare go close and try to liberate him. These reindeer are only semi-domesticated and though they're much smaller than North American caribou, I'd guess Mike weighs about as much as I do on a bad day . Approaching a frightened animal that's thrashing around with two-foot long antlers on its head wasn't an option.
So I just waited. After 5-10 minutes, he got free. Yay! And then he went on the attack again! Boo! Before he could get himself re-stuck, I started running toward him, jumping up and down and shouting and telling him to bugger off (sorry Brits). And he did. I grabbed hold of his "rival" and stowed it safely inside our sheep fence. I wonder who in the village is missing a white plastic deck chair?

Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .
Good Morning Friends,
Ginger, it sounds like you are doing a great job on the purging. Are those papers all from home? I do the same thing with tax files; remove supporting docs in the old ones and combine years. It helps but is time consuming.
Katla, Arrow is beautiful. Thanks for the picture(finally). Lol
Felicia, Terry and others, when I was going through menopause I would cry at the drop of a hat…..I mean if you just looked at me! On a regular doctor’s appointment he came in and as usual asked, “How are you?” and I just burst into tears and told him. Lol I went on a mild anti-depressant and that got me through.
Penny, now you have me concerned about the lonely reindeer. I think the farmer should include him with the sheep.
Heather, I love all the pictures of the grands.
Mary, fantastic picture of the baby Brady. Prayers heading that way. (later) so glad to hear he got the all clear!!!
Janetr, I hope you had a great anniversary yesterday. I love a good steakhouse but they have gotten so expensive that we very, very rarely go to one any more.
Heather, I love the earrings. It sounds like you are having a grand time with the grands. I’m glad your DH got over the tiff. They are no fun but we all have them.
Meg, glad the surgery went well.
Allie, it’s so wonderful to hear of your adventures in your new home. It would be nice if Tom and his attorney ould get their act together but I guess it only helps you when they don’t. Keep loving live, my friend. (((Hugs)))
to all the Newbies. This is a great place for support and information so come often and join in the chat. Please tell us a little about yourself to help us get to know you. Please sign your post with what you want to be called. It makes it easier for us to respond to you. Also a location is great, be it specific or general. We are happy to have you join us.
I had gotten pretty far behind so had to skim over a few posts. I’ve been a bit busy with the Moose and next weekend will be at the state convention for three and a half days. I’ll log my food and try to read posts but don’t know how much time I’ll have to post.
Sending love, good thoughts and cool sunshine to all of you.
