@PastorVincent When I ran my October race, one of the suggestions I got from Tailwind was to have a bottle of concentrate and to make up for it at the Aide Stations, so that's a doable option. I ended up not doing that, because with crew, I could afford not to, but for a marathon, that could be a great option.0

_nikkiwolf_ wrote: »Quick question for everyone who owns Saucony Kinvaras: What's your experience on the life span compared to other running shoes?
After yesterdays 5km run, I woke up this morning with a bit of pain in my left knee again; when I was perfectly fine after a 14km run on Sunday. Looking back through my running log, I noticed that this time as well as the last time (two weeks ago) my knee hurt, I had been running in the Kinvaras the evening before. So of course now I'm hoping the easy solution to fix my knee would be to replace them.
On the other hand, it could be just a coincidence. I usually run 600km to 700km in a pair of shoes before replacing them (and then I usually only retire them because I want an excuse to buy new shoes ^^). The Kinvaras only have 460km (=285mi) on them, so they should be good for quite a few more runs...
So now I'm wondering if anybody else has noticed Kinvaras wearing out more quickly than normal?
@_nikkiwolf_
Kinvaras used to be my "go to" shoe, but I noticed that the last pair I bought wore out rather quickly and I haven't bought them since. Like you, I experienced odd knee and hip pain. I believe I was wearing version 7 at the time, purchased in 2016--don't quote me on that because I had a baby recently and my memory isn't what it used to be! I now alternate between ONs Cloudventure (for light trail runs) and New Balance Vazee (which I have found to be similar to the Kinvaras).@_nikkiwolf_ I have a pair of Kinvara trail shoes but have not wore them yet. One thing I noticed when I bought them is that they are quite a bit lighter than my other trail shoes. Could the lighter weight lead to less life span?
- Saucony Kinvara 7 - 4mm drop, 184g
- Saucony Cortana 4 - 4mm drop, 176g
- Saucony Zealot - 4mm drop, 204g
- Saucony Xodus 6.0 GTX - 4mm drop, 301g
The Xodus are heavier, so they don't compare, and I've only worn them for about 300km. But the other two are quite close in weight to the Kinvaras.
The Zealots are just a tiny bit heavier, they are now at 584km and still no problems so far.
The Cortona 4 are slightly lighter than the Kinvaras. They are my all-time favourite running shoe. I ran 656km on the first pair, no problem. When I managed to find another pair (sadly, the model is discontinued, so that wasn't easy!), I've decided to move the old ones to my parents place for holidays and am now 305km into the new pair, but I'm expecting to clock some more distance with the old ones over Christmas.
I don't know... I guess I will just stop using the Kinvaras for now and see if that fixes the knee pain. If yes, I might give them one more chance in January. If no..

skippygirlsmom wrote: »@7lenny7 thanks for the weight running balance info. Very informative. I lost weight while running before, but I was maxing out at half of what I’m running now. At my happy weight I was running about 40 miles more a month than I am now. Skip looked at the On Cloud shoes a couple weeks ago, she ran all over the parking in them came back into Fleet Feet and said I hate them for running, love them for walking, the owner said “me too”. Oh geesh. She didn’t like the feel of the tread on her feet if that makes sense. You need some snow googles.
@skippygirlsmom I tried both the On Running trail shoes and road shoes. I LOVE the trail shoes. I hate the road shoes, for the same reason Skip mentioned. I couldn't believe the difference. I have no idea why the pads don't bother me at all on the trails but drive my nuts on pavement.
I did buy some ski goggles a couple of years ago just for running, but decided to return them because I didn't think I'd use them much. I may buy some again. This starts my third winter running and this is the third time I could have used them. I wouldn't use them much, but when I did, I'd be pretty grateful for having them.
@pastorvincent is that 100 calories per scoop, or per hour? (ETA: I guess since you say you'd use 1 scoop per hour, it's a silly question!) If per hour, that seems pretty low. I hear 200 to 250 calories per hour is pretty common. I plan on 300 calories per hour and that worked well, for me. I make my own gel, which is just diluted honey with a bit of molasses (for the potassium) put in a soft flask with a bite valve. This allows me to sip it a little bit at a time, rather than take in an entire gel pack. It's much cleaner. No sticky mess at all. I do, though, have to carry water with me so I could always wash down the honey. The water stops also had gatorade so I factored that into my calorie intake as well. It sounds like you've done your homework and are getting a good plan put together that will work for you.0 -
@7lenny7 Tailwind is 100 calories per scoop. they recommend 2-3 scoops in 24oz of water per hour, depending on what you are doing,0

When I did my 12 mile long run this weekend (my longest run ever), I felt my tummy get to that totally empty phase. I took a sip of water and just felt it swoosh right down into my belly. I had jelly beans with me, but ate them a little later than I should have, and the last mile and a half was way harder than it needed to be.
Lesson learned for the upcoming HM this weekend:- Eat more breakfast. I know what food works before my long runs, so just going to eat more of that.
- Snack sooner during the race. I waited until 6/12 miles completed, and that was too late. I had to pee REALLY bad and was watching for a portapotty and didn't think about fueling until after I made pee pee.
I started running because I thought it would be great to help me kill the last 15-20lbs. Welp. Doesn't work that way, and I'm still working away at the last 10.6 -
@Elise4270 and @amymoreorless I just got an email that tomorrow Dec 6th, Leakycon is releasing more tickets because I guess they are moving to a bigger facility. So tomorrow at 2pm EST, there will be more tickets!!!3

@7lenny7 isn't that weird about the On Cloud. She said she would love to wear them with jeans, but not to run. Needless to say "to wear with jeans" wasn't happening. We will have to look at the trail shoes, hers don't fit anymore.0

100 Cals per scope. I need to do a good 4+ hour test with it, so might increase my scopes at that time. Just need time and weather.1 -

05/06/18 - Pittsburgh Marathon - aiming for sub four hours.

2020 - Disney World Dopey! (if can raise funds)
Wife was out with her friends, and the kid was still at school AND the weather seemed to dry up, so before I could think better of it I rushed out the door for a run. I knew I did not have time for a long run, but figure I get what I could.
Run started fine, 15 mph winds but mid 40s temp so not bad. Left the down coat at home But it was not more than a couple miles in it started to rain again. It alternated between gentle and downpour. But as is the way with us weird people who run... I have a hard time STARTING to run when it rains, but if it rains AFTER I am out there already I am fine.
My new Darn Tough socks earn their pay today though. I worked hard at avoiding puddles and streams, but my feet still ended up soaked. Darn Tough did not care, feet were still nice and cozy.
So I often see deer, bunnies, birds, and etc on runs but today I had a real fist. A MOUSE cut across the pavement in front of me. Normally mice are much more skittish and stay hidded, not this one. Not sure what was up with the critter, but it just jogged on by and into the nearby grass.

Yeah. I think the last test I did was 3 hours with 4 scopes and 40oz of water.0 -

HEY CHECK THIS OUT! I finally pulled out my "medal" for my AG placement in the Run Santa Run 5k (make sure you click play):
Pretty stinking cool.9 -
@PastorVincent That's awesome!0

Ill go for around 50 miles. This is an odd month for me after Saturday and I probably shouldn't push it too much. I will try to do road runs 3-4 miles at an easy pace - around a 8-minute mile 3 times a week.4

Kinvaras have been my go to shoes since spring 2014. Kinvara 4s, I'd get about 300 miles. Kinvara 5s, 400 to 500 miles. Kinvara 6s, pretty consistently 500 miles. Kinvara 7s, still in the boxes waiting for the 6s to be end of life.
HOWEVER . . . somewhere in there, my podiatrist had me start using Superfeet Blue inserts. The increased lifespan of the Kinvaras roughly coincides with when I started using the Superfeet and discarding the inserts that come with the shoe.
OTHER RANDOM FACTOID: I have a running buddy who always wears Kinvaras and gets 600 to 800 miles out of them. He may have tougher feet and legs than I do.
So . . . I'd say it's inconclusive. For sure, the Kinvaras don't last as long as the Saucony Peregrines (trail shoes); I retired my first pair of Peregrines at 500 miles out of concern for the tread, and how they've held up with lawn mowing and snow shoveling indicates I might have retired them early.
But yeah, I suspect on the average Kinvaras last toward to low end of a typical running shoe's life span. I can live with that, because they're very common and I can always buy an old version cheaper than list of the current version.0 -

Non-running check in:
After yesterday's easy 5K, today I feel about like I did after last Thursday's aborted one mile run. I can feel the injury while walking, but it's not enough to make me change anything as long as I don't try to run.
Went to club practice to check in with Coach. Told him I'm questionable for Saturday. Maybe I'll run moderately well, maybe I'll run poorly, maybe I'll be unable to run. Final decision on team assignments doesn't have to be made till 5PM on Friday, at which time I may be able to rule out inability to run at all.
Right now, I'm assigned to the A team. That's where I belong if I'm healthy. The bad news is, with the injury status of a couple other guys I might even belong there if I'm hurt but can still run. I'd feel less pressure if I were on the B team; but then I'd feel guilty if I finished ahead of the A team's 3rd scorer.
So the plan now is to rest today, tomorrow, Thursday, and probably Friday, and hope that's enough to let me run 8K fairly well on Saturday.2 -
Finally got to run! It's official, summer is over in Memphis. It was downright nippy with a good stiff breeze. We had the park almost to ourselves. Of the usual crowd of dozens of runners and walkers, there were only about three hard core people, plus some very cold and put upon looking dog walkers.
Did 5k in 35:41, which is a few seconds faster than my previous best. Could have done 35 I think, since we had to stop because my husband got an acorn in his shoe. I'm also pleased with the way I felt afterwards - could have taken a few minutes rest and done it again!
First time setting up a ticker, hopefully I will do this right!

So, I woke up (early without my alarm) all excited because a cold front came through last night. Dropped the temp to 55 degrees F. Alas, I have a taper/ rest day thing scheduled. Guess I am going into work early instead. My running training app only has 5 miles over two runs scheduled until Sunday. I am going to be climbing the walls here pretty soon.
December Goal = Run a freakin marathon and not die.
Upcoming Races
12/10 = BCS Marathon
1/6 = River Road Run 1/2 marathon
This taper thing is HARD. This is crazy! I used to be so sedentary... I can’t even anymore. I felt like I was climbing the walls at work today so I left early to go to a yoga class. It was good - breathing out stress and getting all the pops out of the joints was mecha-therapeutic.
It is crazy how my priorities have shifted with this running/ yoga thing. I used to be so fixated on fad diets and suffering for my body image. Now it is all about physically feeling awesome and accomplishing personal goals.
Sorry to gush.... but running has totally changed the way I view myself.
Seriously, this taper thing is making me emotional and crazy....8 -
I only completed 15 miles in November and was mostly absent in the November thread. All of my December miles in 2016 were on the treadmill. This month I would like to complete at least 50% of my miles outdoors. My goal will be 40 miles due to the holidays impinging on some of my plans.
Hi everyone, I started running this month outdoors. Yesterday 5 miles at the trail in Broad Ripple. I really started feeling great after 4 miles but darkness was setting in. I ran the last 1.5 miles in the dark. It was 60 degrees yesterday. I ran in a strong headwind the first 1/2 mile. Then I didn't notice the weather that much other than the intermittent light rain. I had to run in place at the crossroads both coming and going, and usually there would be a car that would allow me to run across the street, but not yesterday. Bah, humbug!
I haven't run in about 2 weeks. I had spent most of my free time composing both a letter and cover letter to the Board of Nursing to defend my friend who was fired last May. I wanted the letter to be perfect...so wrote and rewrote it. I am trying to right a wrong. She goes in front of the board on Thursday...so any prayers would be welcome. Her name is Kim.
Today I wanted to run but overslept today. Instead I did some housework while my husband ran errands. Very upset about the tax bill that was voted on and passed in the dead of night. Totally unacceptable that no one had a chance to read it before voting on it. I lost a lot of sleep over the weekend, but better now.
Anyway, it felt terrific to be out again running. I forgot how much I love it. I think that I could have easily run another 3 or 4 miles if it hadn't gotten dark. I am actually thinking about getting one of those helmet things with the light. Night runners, what do you think?
I am also an adult onset runner, hmmmm maybe. I actually was a runner when I was a kid...was inspired by horse racing...just felt like running after seeing those races. And there were some great horses in the 70's....Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, and Spectacular Bid....to name a few. Then life got in the way....no time in high school or college really. A few years ago, I explored whether or not things that I was happy doing as a kid would still make me happy. So started watching horses again, and started running. I started on the treadmill, which I hated. I really didn't like road running at first and then something clicked and I really liked it. I was never very athletic....more of a bookworm, I guess. However, running is individual...you are not letting down a team, unless you run in relays or on teams. I had already lost 48 pounds...so thought that running would help me lose those last 10 pounds...it did for a time, but now back up. I think that in order to really make it a lifestyle change....you need to really love it to keep it up.
12/4....5 miles outdoors
Goal ....40 miles with 20 of them being outdoors.3 -

Ugh...don't like running in the rain either. Is it getting your feet wet that's the worst part or is it all of it? I love the snow though.0 -
12/1 - 3.1
12/2 - rest day
12/3 - 3.1
12/4 - 3.1
12/4 - 3.25
Today I started working toward 4 miles. I plan to stay at 3.25 for a couple more days. I had to run after a long day in town, so I felt a little tired and was off my pace (not much... by 13 sec/mi). It started to rain a little when I had a mile and a quarter to go... it actually felt refreshing. It was dark by the time I finished... I ran the last tenth of a mile under the streetlights in the parking lot!
My husband surprised me with a Buff. I love it- though I had had my eye on a Merino one, and this is straight up microfiber. I think it'll be just fine anyway. It's in the wash with my new 50% off scoopneck running shirt... which may not get much use until spring. I need a turtleneck these days.

December goal: 75 miles
12/3: 9.1 miles
12/5: 3.1 miles (intervals)
12.2/75
I went to the track with my husband today. I ran intervals while he is doing c25k. I felt pretty fast. It was cold so that may be part of the reason I ran faster. Lol I don't know how all you Northerners do it. I was freezing and it was only 49°F. I did wear gloves and a jacket, but I was cold the whole time. I guess it is just something you get used to. It was 80°F yesterday. It will be cold tomorrow and Thursday too, but I plan to get out there anyway. I think part of my problem is I don't really have good winter clothing. Especially workout gear.
