If you can, see if you can borrow other runners lights to try out before you buy. Like so much in running, it really comes down to personal preference.
I really like the red option on the one you mention. I do Astronomy as another hobby in the dark, and red lights are critical there. I might just grab it sight unseen some day. Not right now though, gotta get through gift buying season first.
Any other good ones I should check out that have a RED option?
@pastorvincent I don't have additional models to recommend, but for what you're doing, make sure you can turn the red on and off, and cycle through any different modes or levels, without turning on the white LED or you'll defeat the purpose.0 -

Ugh, those were a tough 2.5 miles. I had to push through. I was super tight. Note to self... more yoga!
Get a foam roller so you can spot-treat the tight spots (IT band, etc.). It helps.
I find it helpful to mentally check out during the run. I try not to think about actually running when I'm running. I kinda sort out my stuff while I run. After a while, you don't notice the hard of the running and you're getting your head straight.
I have two foam rollers. It's just been a while since I've been acquainted with them. I need to get back into the swing of stretching/rolling consistently. I just told myself to relax and get to the next corner/street light etc and then of course once I got there said ok you can get to the next one. The legs just weren't cooperating today.0 -
Thanks for the encouragement, guys. I really appreciate it! I got out there and ran my 3.25, but a little more slowly than yesterday. I have to accept that I'm not going to break my own record every day. Also, my trainer thinks my legs are getting tired, so tomorrow will be 2 miles and Saturday will be a hike.
12/1 - 3.1
12/2 - rest day
12/3 - 3.1
12/4 - 3.1

So I don't usually buy new clothes (I am the queen of Goodwill), but I found a 50% off deal on a snazzy running shirt, and my husband bought me a Buff! All in purple, my favorite color!

@7lenny7 great info on the lights. I actually just brought Skip and her teammate knuckle lights this morning, I figured it was an easy to carry quick fix to their running in the dark at practice. She actually fell on an uneven sidewalk yesterday, of course my first reaction was "you didn't put a hole in those brand new Nike tights did you?" "no Mom but I'm all cut up" "okay good" ha ha I also brought them some LEDs small lights like I use to clip to their clothes so they don't get run over.4

It does. you can switch it from white mode to red mode and once in red mode, it will stay in red mode through on/off cycles until you switch to white mode.

Heh. I've had a headlight with a red light I never use, and now I know what it's for! I learn some of the most important stuff by just hanging out and hearing the answers to questions I didn't know to ask.2 -

I ran yesterday. It was my wedding anniversary, so I got the baby down for a nap and headed out to burn off some calories in anticipation of a big indulgent dinner.
Started mapmyrun. Started c210k (week 11, day 2 - warm up, run 17 minutes, walk 1 three times, then cool down). Started my podcast. I was all bundled up because it was a cool drizzling 50 degrees. I almost immediately started sweating profusely so I removed as much as I could.
I skipped the big hill in the neighbor because I wanted to see how my speed was compared to where I was previously. After my first mile, I was feeling pretty good, hitting my stride, and figured I'd be taking a walk break in about five minutes. So I turned a corner and then another, one more corner and a teensy hill, yet another corner before I checked my phone to see what going on.
I had the wrong workout up on c210k! It was week 14 - run 60 minutes straight! I was too far into to stop and start over. And given that my 5k time is 47:25 - why not just add on another 13 minutes.
And that's the story of how I ran for an hour straight for the first time ever in my life.34 -

December goal: 75 miles
12/3: 9.1 miles
12/5: 3.1 miles (intervals)
12/6: 4.2 miles
16.4/75
It was another chilly run this afternoon. It was a little warmer than yesterday, but still cold for this Texas girl. I got 4.2 miles in. Getting out the door really was the hardest part. Once I got going I really enjoyed it. Tomorrow's run will be my coldest run so far. It is supposed to be 40°F at lunch. It might be a little warmer after work but I have an appointment to donate at the blood drive then so if I am going to run I will have to be at lunch. It's funny, I am dreading it and looking forward to it at the same time.
@eponine1984 That's an awesome story!
Happy Anniversary!

Ridiculously bad running day mileage wise as I had too many clingy little girls who needed attention in my house today. Ben comes back tomorrow night for his company Christmas party and then he'll be gone again by Sunday. Hopefully they don't get more upset next week after having him back for a couple days.
Likelihood of me sleeping on the floor?
Pretty damn high

@eponine1984 Amazing job!
@JessicaMcB Aww cuties. My bedroom winds up with all 4 of us in it most nights. I long for my bed back and yet I dread the day they outgrow piling in with us!
Last night was cookie night and my knees weren't thrilled with me from Sunday's long run. So I went out tonight instead. Plan was for 8km, doing laps of the local Candy Cane Lane since I was going out so late and it's so well lit. 7km in I twisted my ankle on a piece of half melted slush and said 'ow' so I headed home... wound up at 7.7km and now my ankle hurts. I don't think it's bad but I'm going to push Thursday's run to Friday to let it heal a bit.
Cookies!
12/1 - 5.2km
12/2 - rest
12/3 - 11.5km
12/4 - rest
12/5 - cookies!

I did my treadmill 5k today as promised. My time was 27:50 so right where I expected to be at a 9 min pace. My time might be a little off because I was walking to get set up and once I started running I covered the treadmill so I wouldn’t stare at it and forgot to look at how long I walked only how far. I am pretty sure there was a 2 at the beginning of the timer before I started running, I reached 3.1mi ran right before 30 min so I am going with 27:50. More information than any of you needed.

I am finally home from my November of travel... Hoping I will not have to go back to Montreal before the end of the year or anywhere else for that matter. Although I have to say Montreal was beautiful especially with all the Christmas decorations.
I went back and read all of the November posts to get caught up. I didn't make my goal (61.85 out of 75) but I really didn't plan to be gone 3 out of 4 weeks of the month either.
I started reading December and just have to say I am an Adult Onset Runner too... maybe the oldest here. I started 6 years ago when I was 56 and have run 20 HMs and a handful of other 5ks and 10ks. I also lost 60 pounds along the way. Like @MobyCarp I was the kid who hated most athletics (running especially) other than swimming which I excelled at. Running I was always the last, way behind everyone as I struggled in my 'special' orthotic shoes... running was torture plan and simple.
I am so excited to see Lonewolfrunner back with us as @LaDispute57! When is your birthday this week? Mine was Tuesday.
When I arrived at LAX from Montreal my husband picked me up with the dog and the car all packed for a few days away. We didn't even go home, just headed up the coast. I spent the long, extended 4 day, weekend sleeping (had no idea I was SO exhausted), running and wine tasting. Where we were in the Santa Ynez valley, pretty much everything is dog friendly and they have an awesome dog park. It was just what I needed. I also took yesterday (Tuesday) off with a plan to go for a long run but the 20mph winds convinced me that wasn't a great idea so it was birthday intervals instead!
My thoughts are with anyone in the fire zone. We were just there, driving home and commenting on how dry the hillsides were - it wouldn't take much. I had no idea winds were in the forecast and now it is devastated!
Date........Miles.......Total
12/01......5.24........5.24 - Sleeping, running and wine tasting!
12/02......2.60........7.84 - Dog park
12/03......6.00......13.84 - more sleeping, running and wine tasting!
12/04......0.00......13.84 - Driving
12/05......4.37......18.21 - Birthday Intervals + Strength Training
12/06......0.00......18.21

@JessicaMcB The win on a new coach 200 miles/week - that's more than I put on my vehicle
HeadLamps. I actually have 3 different types:
A Petzl Tikka - A nice feature it has is that as your batteries start to drop out it will actually change to a lower output ( flashs a few times and then reduces Lumens ) to extend battery life. 3 or 4 levels, Red Leds and a Flash Mode. The higher end models of this come with a wired secondary battery holder/USB charger port that you can leave in an inside pocket, hydration bag, backpack etc. to extend life. The " Reactive Model " has technology where if you are looking at an object really close it will automatically change the beam pattern to save battery life. Has never left me stranded in the dark and batteries are easy to change.
A Black Diamond, can't find a model number, Batteries are hard to change and it has a weird power up. Double Press and hold on the 2nd press. Good to prevent accidental activation's when traveling, but for me I always pull batteries before they go into a travel bag so not really an issue. 3 levels and Red Led's - Not my Go To light as I just don't trust it as twice it has left me in the dark on a trail with no warning Went from light to dark in one step.
Energizer 200 ~225 lumen from Canadian Tire. 3 intensity level plus Red Led's. I had initially bought them as cheapies for Backpacking, Camping, working on vehicles/electrical/carpentry etc.
Multiple ( 3 per package ~$40.00 cdn ). Ironically it is my go to light for local night runs around town. Reliable.
All use 3 AAA batteries.
I find that I tend to place headlamps higher on my forehead than most people to make sure none of the light from the beam gets into my peripheral vision - I find it destroys my depth perception. Like looking into a set of high beams from an approaching vehicle. Anyone shopping for headlamps I recommend you try them on in a darken room so you can get a feel for them. I had a few that spilled out to much light down across my face and not enough out in front. Beam too wide.
Terrain also makes a big difference in light choice, Flat Town trails or Challenging Bush bashing have very different minimum requirements. Maybe the waist lights I tried had too narrow of a beam, I didn't like them. Between body movement and beam pattern it seem I was not getting the illumination I expected/require.
I have a Red Led Flasher designed for bicycles that I clip on the back of the headlamp band so anyone approaching from the rear can see me.
@RespectTheKitty Glad to see that you have been able to get back out and run.3 -
@eponine1984 That is SO awesome! Bravo.1

HOWEVER . . . somewhere in there, my podiatrist had me start using Superfeet Blue inserts. The increased lifespan of the Kinvaras roughly coincides with when I started using the Superfeet and discarding the inserts that come with the shoe.
OTHER RANDOM FACTOID: I have a running buddy who always wears Kinvaras and gets 600 to 800 miles out of them. He may have tougher feet and legs than I do.
So . . . I'd say it's inconclusive. For sure, the Kinvaras don't last as long as the Saucony Peregrines (trail shoes); I retired my first pair of Peregrines at 500 miles out of concern for the tread, and how they've held up with lawn mowing and snow shoveling indicates I might have retired them early.
But yeah, I suspect on the average Kinvaras last toward to low end of a typical running shoe's life span. I can live with that, because they're very common and I can always buy an old version cheaper than list of the current version.
Judging by price/km alone, I could retire them now:
At least it's possible that (since I don't use special inserts) it's not only my imagination, they might actually really start wearing out as I'm getting close to 300mi.
@_nikkiwolf_ I'm impressed that you have this kind of data. What app/program did you use?0 -
Oh also I am in for 100 this month - don't think I actually said that anywhere!
And I bought my first pair of Kinvara's a few weeks ago - 8's I think or whatever the newest model is. I think there were a number of reviews that commented poorly on the 7 but felt the issues were mostly corrected in the 8's. So far I like them. They are VERY different from my 0-drop Altra One 2's or the Skoras. I like them, they are comfortable and the cushioning feels great, if a bit strange.
On that note, I have a pair of women's sz 7.5 Topo Fly-Lyte 2's that I cannot wear. They have about 25 miles on them. If anyone is interested PM me. I paid $100 (plus tax and shipping) but am thinking $50 plus shipping.

It's a training log I've used for years - before I ever discovered Strava, and I still use it.
For shoes, you can add all kinds of info, like name, purchase date, price, "initial milage" ( I guess if you are switching from another running log) and notes. Then when I upload a run, I only have to select the shoe from a dropdown list. And in the end I can see the price/km in the equipment list. I'm only missing the option to use different currencies for the price
It also lets you create all kinds of graphs like "monthly distance" or "pace vs day". Here's an example ("distance vs week:")
