Nice long run this morning with a fun group of women. The sun was out, it was chilly but tolerable if you keep moving, right around 30 degrees.
Happened to be with several of the women who are planning a HM in August on Cape Cod that I'm excited about. We have rented a house but won't find out if we get in the race (as a group) until May. Even if we don't, we'll go and run our own event and it should be a blast.8 -

Blessedly short story. I saw him on the river line, he did not see me. There are at least 2 out there that we know of, I just was not chancing it where generally you won't know they have been stalking you until they are on top of you and you are 100% *kitten*.
So that's my story of being a *kitten* lol
I was wondering about that too. I am glad to know that even though you are a crazy runner, you are not, in fact, a crazy person. There will always be another day to run, but there is only one @jessicamcb.3 -
New dilemma (apparently I don't have enough real worries in my life, I need to invent some).
A local town is having their inaugural half marathon and 5k in April 2018. Part of me wants to run the half (I'd need to start training like yesterday as I've only completed one 5k and my longest run to date is 4.5 miles). Part of me wants to improve and run a faster 5k (current best is 47:25, so shouldn't be too hard to get faster). Part of me wants to be pregnant by then and who knows how much running I'll do (husband and I are ready to start trying for bubba #2).
Half marathon finishers get a medal and I do love shiny things. I think it would be amazing to say I participated in the first year and try to make it an annual thing. Decisions, decisions.6 -

When do you have to register by? I'd say if you feel ready to take on the HM, then lace up & start training! There are plenty of training plans to follow, and any running will help you get better on a 5K. Then, decide later how you feel as far as the 5K or HM.
And, as far as hopefully being preggers, go for it! Unless there are some other health issues that you and your doctor discuss, most times they say go ahead & continue running as long as you have already been doing it.
Good luck on it all, don't put too much pressure on yourself!

@sarahthes tell the Edmontonians I'll take their share of the ice . Everyone in town was complaining last night about the ice during the Santa Claus parade and I was standing there thinking "Chicka-chicka-yeah!"
@MNLittleFinn thinking good coach/wife thoughts for you and the race
Nice run this morning, weather was decent. More of a tempo run than a long run though given it was only a hair over 50k. Lots of shiny, shiny ice

IMO: Train for the half, it will make your 5k faster at the same time. If you get pregnant, then check with your doctor, but depending on the timing you might still be able to run the 1/2.4 -
12/1 10.02 miles
12/2 14.02 miles
Awesome weather (for a few more days) Started around 39 F, came back it was about 54 F

So RACE REPORT
Was 24F when getting ready so I put on my cold kit and we headed over. Got to race a good 90 mins before the start so was glad to have cold kit on. Got some hot cocoa and just chilled (literally) at the start.
9 am hit so I decided to start running for warm up. Started the course backward. I know the area very well, run it several times a week but just wanted to get warmth in my legs. About 1/4th of a mile in my bowels decided they really wanted attention so backtracked to the portapotties and got in line. By the time that was handled it was time to head to the corals. Ah well no warm-up for me!
Ditched some layers in a discrete location near the start and lined up with the elite runners. I had a new plan to try. When the air horn indicated the start, I stayed with the elites. Ran with them for like.... 150 yards or so, then pulled to the outside lane and slowed to my goal paced of about 7:30. The plan worked perfectly - 100s upon 100s of slower runners well behind me and I had a nice clean start.
I was surprised but very few people caught and passed me. I did not catch many either, so I guess I was right where I needed to be. I stayed in the outside lane for the first mile or so just in case but was not an issue.
At the mile one maker there was an 8 foot tall blow-up Santa so I did a fancy high jump and high fived him. Probably cost me a few seconds but was totally worth it.
Some little kid was in front of me until about mile 2 when I passed him. Turns out he stayed right with me the rest of the way as he only finished 10 seconds or so behind me. I had assumed after I finally passed he would have burned out, but guess him wrong. Just goes to show, foot stomping and bad form do not always mean slow runner! He came in 3rd of his age group (10-12 I think).
My goal pace was 7:30 so I tried to pay attention to my Garmin voice prompts and when it said 7:20 I pulled back a little, and when it said 7:35 I picked up a little. I felt good about my time as I turned the final corner to the finish.
Then I saw the clock.
21 minutes and some seconds. Shocked I picked up to a full sprint and crossed the line at 22:07 official time. That is at least two mins faster than my fastest adult 5k and closing in on my High School PR of 20:something! Not bad for an old fart
Also:
(this is live results, there was over 600 runners)
Third in Age Group, 40th overall!
Nothing like a race on home turf (literally, 3 to 4 times a week I run that park) to nail a PR.
Garmin read the run as 3.08 miles, so I think the course was just slightly shy, but close enough for me thanks to my tangents.

Hi all!
Well, the OP wasn't 100% correct. You see I am a day behind and I missed 114 posts not just 50
In any case, my target for this month is 200k again, I hope I'll make it, cause it seems that I have a problem in my hip-glute area. We'll see!
12/1: 10.6k -Easy-
12/2: 14.1k -Easy-
24.7k/200k
Stay hydrated!
Upcoming races:
12/10: Valdirkeia Run10k5 -

Thanks!
That course is probably the flattest 5k I run. The I think Garmin's reading of 62 feet is actually too many feets. So I knew it would be a good one for a PR attempt.1 -
Just killing it @PastorVincent - way to go!2

We had a great time!
My husband and I had one main goal this time. Since this was only our second 5k race and our first after completing c25k, we just wanted to run the whole distance with no walk breaks. Easy peasy. In fact we finished, looked at each other, and said, When does the race start? I feel like we could do that all over!
Our time was 38:03 according to the chip - according to our gps it was somewhat faster. I had hoped for a time better than 36 minutes but did not achieve this - learned a lot about running a big race with 5000 people though! I had diligently figured out my projected finishing time, entered it on my registration form, looked up and gotten in the correct corral. Crowd starts slowly inching towards the starting line. And across it. And slowly inching towards the finish line. And I suddenly realize - I am surrounded by walkers! Not a single person besides me read the sign up information and walkers are all over the place, including in the second corral (first corral was reserved for elites) frequently ten abreast, arms linked, wearing matching t-shirts. Or obliviously typing on their phones as they slowly strolled forwards! It seems like, compared to our first, smaller race, there were a lot fewer serious runners in this one and a lot higher percentage of walkers, probably because the serious runners were mostly competing at longer distances.
The gps says we traveled .2 extra miles, which involved looping around the walkers and trying to get through. It also says we were forced to walk for almost the entire first two minutes of the race before reaching open ground enough that we were able to run. As we headed under the Convention Center, the 5k merged briefly with the marathon, and we were able to run a little by veering left into the marathoners and running alongside them, passing hundreds of 5k walkers. But all too soon the marathoners went their way and we went ours, back into yet more walkers. At that point it felt more like playing football than anything else, dodging sideways and trying to slip between people who had no intention of moving even if you said excuse me. My husband and I had to go single file and take whatever openings we could.
Mile 2 of this 5k is really groovy, you run through the St Jude Children's Hospital campus and the children come out and line the streets and cheer for you and slap hands. Then up a big hill over an overpass and down into the baseball stadium. We had driven this hill before and were a little afraid of running it, but race day energy made it seem like nothing.
Anyway, even being slowed down by having to go around so many people, I placed 37th out of 250 in my age group, which I think is not bad for someone who weighed 100 lbs more this time last year, and first ran 5k less than a month ago! Altogether a very successful day, and a learning experience as far as what corral to start in.

@sarahthes - The Edmonton ice story reminds me of the year I was in 7th grade in Lincoln, Nebraska. We had ice all winter long, and I walked a mile and a half to and from school. I started out falling down a lot, but by the end of the winter I was pretty sure-footed on ice; that trait has lasted till now, and no doubt helped me learn to run on ice at age 57 or so.
@eponine1984 - There is a certain cachet to being able to say you've run a race every year since it began. I have one race like that, Winter Warrior Half Marathon. I'll run the WW for the 4th time next January. I'm really impressed by the 100% club for Race with Grace 10K - 7 runners, 27 years and counting. (I'm at 7 years for RWG, every year since I became a runner.)
@PastorVincent - Way to execute a race plan! You did exactly what you needed to do, and the results blew away your expectations.
@rheddmobile - Yes, when the honor system is used for lining up there is widespread cheating. Or, widespread excessive optimism, if you want to be kind. Still, linking arms is uncalled for. There could be faster *walkers* trying to pass the clump. And yes, if there are multiple affiliated races at the same time and place, the serious runners will mostly go for the longer race. I recall I once ran a half marathon and noticed that my first 5K split would have been good for 3rd overall in the associated 5K, at age 59. That was a 5K split on a half marathon attempted PR, not a 5K run as a 5K race; I could have run a faster 5K if that's all the farther I planned to run. Of course, the serious runners were all in the half marathon just like I was. 59 year old guys don't finish 3rd in a 5K where three serious open (non-masters) runners show up.2 -

Thanks! Yeah, I have to admit, I am always a bit surprised when a plan actually works0 -
