Good morning all! Happy Thursday! It has been a busy week with the final days of childcare before I go on my break. I also found out that I will be losing a family when I come back from vacation, so I advertised an opening in my daycare. I got quite a few responses and out of those three families contacted me and set up interviews. Two of which were the past two evenings. My third is when I return, in January. Whew! Just ups my stress levels and my DH (at the thought of less income coming in) is about to implode. I think I have mentioned he is a worrier. IF he doesn't have enough in his life to worry about; he will borrow from some one else's life! Anyway, due to the stress level, and his dental issues; he has decided not to make the trip to see DD and her family in Texas. I am sad for him, because if he could just shelve his stress for just a few days and enjoy some time with DD and Joaquin, it would do his heart some good, I think. SO...I was feverishly hunting for a good deal on airfare for myself. Found a roundtrip flight for only $233 out of Chicago and got very excited about it. DH stressed about having to make the three hour drive to Chicago in the winter (I was waiting for the phrase "uphill through six feet of snow"). He asked if I could find anything out of the local (45 minutes away) airport. Yup. But it is almost $300 more! He commented that we were going to spend that much driving, so I should just book that. Yikes! That was the hardest thing I have ever done! I am not necessarily a tightwad; but I bought the basic economy seat which means only one carry on that must fit under the seat in front of me. No seat choice. Basic economy means getting there on the cheap. To me...$520 is NOT cheap! Anyway, I will be in Texas with bells on!
Lenora- So good to hear from you! Glad you are feeling better and I am glad you were on the phone with a friend when the seizures began and that she knew what to do! I am sure Cracker is loving having you home!
Marcelyn- Love the money box idea! How fun!!
Machka- I haven't figured out a way to carry my phone on walks/runs since they started making phones bigger. My little flip phone fit perfectly into the small zip pocket in the back of my yoga pants. As far as keys go; I tie my house key into the laces on my running shoes (not where it ties, but into the lacing). I have tried the arm band and a lanyard style holder, but I seem to have some sort of sensory thing. I need everything, even my hair, to be pulled in tight and not swinging. I just wish the athletic apparel designers would redesign clothes/pockets to fit the "standard" device of the day.
Woo- Huh! I always thought Woo! was like more exciting than Awesome! Kind of a throw your hands in the air "WOO!". I have used it often. I some times think I like my life in "WOO!" mode.
Rye- That is some great swimming! You should be very proud of that!
PIp- Leglamp! "Fra gee lay! It's Italian!" "I think it says fragile, honey!" Love the ornament!
Beth- Hello! Hang in there! I think we are all powering through the holidays the best we can.
Becca- Keeping your older son in my thoughts and prayers. Those hard lessons of youth!
On a lighter note: DD and I were talking on the phone yesterday and she used the phrase "y'all", which made this mid-western mama cringe. I told her so and she laughed. That got us started on local slang of different areas. She said the phrase that is used often in Texas that is driving her crazy is "fixin' 'a". Example: "We are fixin' 'a spend Christmas with my husband's family." Fixin' 'a = planning to or getting ready to. My sister in law stopped over last night and I mentioned this conversation to her and she laughed. She is from the Appalachia area of PA. She told me that if they pull into a parking lot and there are no spaces left, they say that the lot is "parked up". Ex. "It's all parked up." That gave me a giggle. She also found it funny that in Michigan, the food "pigs in a blanket" are sausages wrapped in dough and baked. Where she is from "pigs in a blanket" are a sausage/rice mixture wrapped in cabbage leaves and baked. We call those "cabbage rolls".
Well, hubby just woke up- cross as a bear. He is having a tooth out today. I hope they give him strong pain meds and he sleeps for a while (two or three days maybe?)

Day in the life of Machka ...
Mad dash to work ... walk + bus + walk for a total of about 40 minutes, usually. Sometimes more.
Work, work, work
An hour for lunch during which time I dash madly about shopping or hiking off to the botanical gardens or somewhere else. Today I shopped.
Work, work, work
Then the long trek home. I leave home at about 8:35 am and return home again about 6 pm. 9.5 hours.
Quick snack and a little bit of TV ... and then we're off again ...
Walking, running, cycling, weightlifting.
Dinner is usually somewhere between 8 and 8:30 pm. My husband makes that or we eat out.
And then I can settle down to an evening of laundry (mine only - husband does his own), cleaning the kitchen and/or tidying the house. Today was laundry and I cleaned out the baking shelf to find out what was in there! When I'm in university, much less housecleaning and laundry gets done. I end up wearing some really obscure stuff from the bottom of the cupboard!
And later in the evening, I can finally sit down and work on some projects on the computer until midnight or 1 am or 2 am ...
Anyway, digging through my baking cupboard today I discovered that I have a chocolate truffle mix which I really should use!! I didn't know that was in there! Also my yeast is out of date and should have been kept in the fridge. Oops. And I'm running low on a lot of baking stuff. I kind of suspected I was. I've got a growing shopping list for tomorrow.
My holiday time starts tomorrow afternoon some time and I don't go back until January 2. I'm looking forward to that break from work. So much to do at home!! Finishing going through my pantry is on the list. It's fascinating what's lurking back in there!
And then I really need to get into our home office. That is getting urgent.
In reading all this again, I'm thinking ... no wonder I feel tired a lot of the time, but as tired as I feel, my poor husband has been working even longer hours more days each week (I do 5 days, he does 6 or 7) for the past 2 months and will continue to do that till February.
Machka in Oz5 -
Temperature below freezing but roads and sidewalks dry and safe to walk on. It will be different walking with only the dogs after breakfast as my friend has gone to California for three weeks.
Line dance this morning followed by the monthly restaurant lunch. We're going to my favorite Chinese restaurant so Jake is going, too.

Michelle, thanks, I guess I was not clear. My weight program is 4 week long progressions. My first four week weights were 10lb dumbbells and 6lb leg strap on leg weights. This was doable but just barely. 3 workouts ago on schedule I upped the weight to 12lb and 7lb. My left side is failing (can’t complete the sets and reps scheduled). I’m thinking I should redo the 10/6 lb progression schedule (for both right and left)?
Kelly well this former Chicagoan, current Texan thinks “y’all” should be standard English. I always hated the midwestern “you guys”. Personally tho, I draw the line at “fixin to”. Never heard “parked up” - love it!
On the run... all have great day:
Cin Cin a tutti!

Did Personal Training with Chris Freitag DVD today. The plan for tomorrow is to go to the deep water class.
hmmm...where have my posts gone???
pip - We have a string of lights like your ornament (the leg)
lenora - my daughter says that she uses cornstarch or flour on her cat if she cuts her nails too short and they bleed. She prefers cornstarch. She says that you can also use a piece of bread, put it over the bleeding area. The starches help the blood to clot. She's very good with animals, knows a lot about taking care of them, she works for the NIH but watches dogs on the side. Actually, she saved the life of one of the dogs. She noticed something wasn't right and it turned out that the dog was in end stage liver failure and needed a special diet and special meds or would have died.
The Wii still says I'm in the normal range. I'm really trying hard to stay there. I'll probably go over some next week. One year I really went over and it seemed to take forever to get back to weight so I'm trying to avoid that. But I do have to admit that those cookies I made and are in the freezer and really calling my name. I do make them small so that if I have one it's not as bad as if I were to have made them bigger.
NYKaren - I'm so sorry you're going thru all this,
Denise called yesterday. I don't know, I just got a funny feeling, like she's getting too much like Pete's family (who I think are a low class). I guess it's just that I want only the best for my daughter and I have to accept the fact that she's chosen not to want the best. barbie - what's that saying that you use? "The reason we fail is because we want (something) right now --- I know there's more to it.
Put a load of laundry in. Realized while I was exercising that I should vacuum the downstairs, at least one section. Also want to check the room where Steve stayed to make sure the bed is made
KJ - can I take that opening in your daycare??????? For me, just to be clear....lol Do you know that Denise told us that she's renting a car to drive down here "because they don't want to put the miles on their car". Really, it's good for a car to give it a long distance use and not always stop-and-go in the city. Then she said something about the spare tire. I don't know if she even knows what's the story. Glad you're getting to Texas. I'll be looking forward to pics of Joaquin. I'm a lot like you, I got this arm band for my phone to listen to the radio while I'm exercising. But it just gets too sweaty, I almost never use it. I would prefer to just clip my iPod onto my shorts and put the headphones on. In our family pigs in the blanket were always chopped meat and rice in cabbage leaves. Only problem is that Vince won't eat the cabbage so when I make some I have to just give him the meat. Hey, I have a dentist appt, too, today. But it's not to get a tooth pulled. Good thoughts being sent for your hubby.
Rye - would it be possible for you to use the 12/7 and when you get fatigued drop down to the 10/6. Actually, if your legs don't get fatigued, keep the 7. I'm not sure what kind of weights you have. You can easily change weights on the dumbells, the legs might not work to change quickly but the legs don't give you the problem, only the arms. That would be my suggestion.

Kelly that was my interpretation of woo too. I think the few times I used it that is what I meant. Like an extra cheer. Now I doubt I will use it at all.
Thinking of Mary and how busy she is in her new job. If we don't hear much from her I know this is the reason.
I subbed in a Kindergarten class the past three days. It was an eat your Wheaties class. I even had the principal personally come and thank me for being here. If I do sub next year I will at most take one day the week before the Holiday break. I still will not work the day before the break.

Good morning all,
Marcelyn, I love the tissue idea. I’m going to use your idea for the money I was giving my DD for her to get a passport. Thanks.
Karen, I loved your story of putting up the tree with your DD. I also put mine up with my DD and we had fun looking at all the ornaments. Sorry your work is stressful. Like you said, stay above it.

Patceoh, here is my never fail peanut brittle recipe.
Peanut Brittle
NOTES:
1. You will need a candy thermometer.
2. Have everything measured and ready ahead of time.
3. Takes about 1 hour of interrupted time because you have to stir continuously. (Pull up a chair to the stove and sit and stir.)
4. To clean pan, fill with boiling water and let set until brittle has melted off.
3 cups sugar
½ cup light corn syrup
1 cup hot water
¼ cup butter (don’t use margarine) (cut into pieces)
1 teaspoon salt
1 jar (16 oz.) unsalted dry roasted peanuts
Combine:
1½ teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Grease two cookie sheets and keep warm in 200° oven.
In a large pan, combine sugar, corn syrup and 1 cup hot water.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly with wooden spoon, until soft-ball stage (240°)
Stir in butter, salt and peanuts.
Continue heating, stirring constantly, until mixture reaches 300°.
Remove from heat and quickly stir in baking soda mixture.
Quickly pour half the mixture over each cookie sheet.
Quickly spread out with wooden spoon into ¼ inch thickness.
Cool.
Break into pieces.
(Makes about 2½ pounds)
Pip, love the leg ornament.

Ordered the jump rings and clasp to make the bracelet for my cousin to give to his wife. It's not going to make it there by Christmas but maybe he will just hold it until Valentines Day.
Work has been busy but I have to take the car in to the shop to have the tire fixed. It has a slow leak which I hope they will be able to just put that sealer stull in and I won't need new tires.
Can anyone tell me how they insert a picture of a saying. Can't figure it out. Copy and paste doesn't seem to do the trick.
Well, work is calling. This work thing is getting in the way of my social life!
Hugs to you all, Terry

In the UK "pigs in blankets" are small sausages wrapped in streaky bacon and roasted. The pastry kind are called "sausage rolls". It is normal to serve the former pigs with Christmas turkey dinner. Most people love them more than the turkey.
Made my brandy butter to take to Hove with the Christmas pudding. Then I made the truffles, but I think the cream curdled. I've given it a good whisk and it looks better, but I'm not sure it tastes quite right. I'm going to roll them in cocoa anyway and hope for the best.
I've just had a letter from my mother's cousin's daughter in law. Her mother in law died this last September and she only realised I didn't know when my Christmas card arrived at the old bungalow. She was working up to the very last minute when she broke her arm and it turned to /was revealed as an aggressive cancer. This is really the passing of an era for me - the last link with my mother's side of the family. The bungalow in Sussex was a place where we visited my mother's aunt and cousin often when I was a child. They were national champion dahlia and chrysanthemum growers! His wife was this very Irish lady who has just died, who cared for the aging parents with grace and humour. The daughter in law mentions her sparkling wit. And she made wonderful cakes!
I am so glad that on a trip to my home town a couple of years ago with "the girls" I took the time out to go and see them, not long before my mother's cousin died. Also saw their son. This lady was still strong and hearty and they were delighted to see me. She was very lonely after her husband died and carried on working in the old people's home, where she was taken to die.
My mother met my father while staying at their house when she was 15. And so it was the beginning of me. My father's family lived just down the road. My great aunt lived there because she had been sent away into service down there when she was 13.
Such a long history, which has now come to an end. Some of it is in my memoir.
Nice of the daughter in law to write to me. I will email them.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxx6 -

I insert pictures that are saved as jpeg files. To do that, you click on the icon above the reply box that looks like a picture. It asks you to choose files....you go to your saved pictures and click on the picture you want to insert.

FOUND the nut mill, hooray! Now if I could just find the doggoned marble slab
Kelly, in our house "pigs in a blanket" were sausage links wrapped in pancakes, dang that makes me hungry
NYKaren how wise you are to spend time with your family and memories instead of allowing the work drama intrude. Good healing to strenghthen you for the next workday.
Rye agree y'all should be standard English (2nd person plural?) not you guys or (shudder) youse...
Barbie thanks for showing how to insert pics, I'd forgotten.
Just skimming, time to eat breakfast and get dressed, DH is taking the dogs and me to the beach!
Hugs to all,

Barbara, enjoy your time at the beach. We have a sign in our house that says, "If you're lucky enough to live near the water, you're lucky enough."
I was named "Barbara" when I was born right after WWII. My parents said that Santa Barbara was the patron saint of Naval gunners. During the war, my father had the job of holding the light while the gunners shot from the deck of the ship. I have lived nearly all my life near the water. My middle name is the name of the ship my father served on during WWII where he earned a medal for bravery. Every time we think of moving, we always choose some place near the coast.5 -
And now my bestest cancer friend has been taken into hospital with fluid on the lung. I hope they can fix her up for Christmas at home. I'm sure this is her last one. She texted me from her hospital bed.

Hi Sisters, it's a WOO day for me, in the good sense of Wahoo, Lol. I am up early and drinking a turmeric cocoa, coffee, coconut, soy milk drink before quickly feeding animals then heading in to meet my tramping group. Tongariro Crossing here I come!
Terry, I also insert things by first right clicking on them, then saving them onto my desktop where I can find them quickly, then clicking the picture icon, choose file, and type in name of my desktop jpeg. Seems to work pretty well most times. I haven't figured out how to do little moving action figures like Barbara does...Gotta dash, it's actually raining here this morning which we desperately need as my ground is cracked and parched from lack of water. Volunteering at the senior luncheon today as one of the servers. Walking, getting lifting, cleaning! It is definitely a nice exercise! All frosty out so husband will drive me. I have issues when it comes to driving. Being that I got my first license at 51 years old, there are things I won't do.
- drive at night in unknown places
- drive in frosty, icy or snowy conditions.
So husband and I drove all heck and gone trying to get home from the airport last Sunday! Washington has NO signs whatsoever for Oregonians driving into Washington on when to take an exit to Longview. But when we backtracked and was heading back, there was all sorts of info on where to turn, what number exit! That is frustrating! We have had that happen when we were trying to find the exit to whidbey as well. We had to turn around and there were all sorts of signs saying Whidbey island, and Anacordes.
Well breakfast now.
Hugs to all that need one, and two shoulders to rest on. Love ya ladies!

Hi ladies. It's going to be a "wintery mix" today into tomorrow. I hope it's not too bad, I have to do my grocery shopping tomorrow since I was too lazy to go yesterday.
Well I am flummoxed about DD#1. She keeps saying she doesn't have the money to buy Christmas gifts for the kids, but the BFIL says they did get gifts. So I offered her some money. She said no. She is bound and determined to be angry about her sister borrowing money and not paying it back, although she owes this sister about $1000 from several years ago. I told her that since we sold 2 of our properties, we had already decided to give some money to both girls. This was something my parents did...when they sold some big item, they gave my brother and me some money. She still refuses it. I asked her what she would have done with it if I just had given it to her on Christmas day and now, of course, she won't answer. I think she enjoys being angry, probably because she doesn't know how to feel anything else.
So anyway, I'm doing ok, just trying to relax and not get caught up in the holiday crazies. I found a place that does floatation therapy and I'm going to try that next week. I'm pretty excited about it. I won't close the lid on the "pod" though...to scary!
OK I'm off. Take care Meg from wintery (in theory) Omaha.4 -
Aaah Meg, sorry about the stress you're going thru..... Maybe daughter is thinking she would be obligated to you in some way, and she doesn't wish to. By not accepting your money gift, she has freed herself from that. Money and family can be like oil and water friend. Maybe money gifting to her means she has failed somehow in budgeting etc. Just giving you possibilities of the why. Not that any one of these is the why though! You have a gracious heart friend!

Heather- Sorry to hear of your mother's cousin. It is kind of bittersweet to see the last of a "generation" pass. Sorry also to hear of your friend's illness. Hope she gets some peace and relief. Hugs to you!
Wendy-turmeric, cocoa, coffee, coconut milk???!!! Sounds delish!
Rey- DD has gotten used to the Texas y'all. She didn't think she would, but yesterday she said it's a very comfortable expression. ??
Barbie- Okay, you teaser! Are you kidding? That wonderful story about your name and ....nothing. Come on...give! What is your middle name??
Machka - Whoa! Those are busy days! At least my work comes to me!
Heather- I am going to tell DH about the English version of pigs in a blanket! Sausage wrapped in bacon?! He will be in Hog Heaven!!
Michele- I have often thought of having adult daycare! But only if we can have drinks, too!

Barbara in OR – I love the Pacific beaches in the winter! I am jealous! I am glad you got your medical info back – lots of things going on for you. It’s always good to know what needs to be worked on, and being able to start early is a benefit. Love your newsy posts, by the way.
NY Karen wrote –So I guess the moral of my story is, live in the moment, appreciate what is beautiful and share it with those you love, model compassion even when things around you are hurtful and dark. THIS IS BEAUTIFUL!!
Terry – that bracelet is just gorgeous – your lucky DD. So happy you can work on your jewelry without your wrist hurting. Cute that the doc’s office loved your decorated cast and put it on display. It’s a treasure. Bet DD could get a business going doing it, especially with kids. I am such a peanut brittle fan, especially the home-made stuff. I’d never tackle it. Sometimes I pick up “Munch” bars to satisfy my peanut/sugar cravings.
Barbie – what a relief to not have slippery roads when you walked your pups this morning. It was 23 here at 5 am – the deck was slick but that was it. The Strait of Juan de Fuca is spectacular and yes, you are lucky to live close!
Meg - so glad you are able to talk with your DH every day and you are settling into a routine. Did you say you are making the trip to visit him in January? I think you and Becca have good insight into your DD's refusal of money.
Becca - glad #1 son is still a Navy guy! Admitting he messed up is a big step. Bet you are counting the days until you can talk to him. I've been driving for 50 years and I agree - no driving on icky roads anymore - especially at night. And, there had better be good signs no matter what time of the day! I think Washington's signage is goofy as well, especially in Seattle. The signs point to the freeway but they don't tell you that you have to go through all these streets, all directions, before you get to the on-ramp. GGRR.
Pip – that Christmas ornament with the leg/lampshade reminds me we need to watch “A Christmas Story” again. One of the cutest movies ever made! All of your ornaments have a story it seems (lots of you gals have similar) and they are such treasures.
Kelly – hope your DH heals quickly from his dental visit and you get some new kids lined up. Flying to TX will make it easier all around and y'all won’t be driving on slick-ish roads all the way down to TX. My dad from Northern Indiana would always say "You-uns". Not sure where that came from, lol.
Heather - sorry to hear your cancer friend is in the hospital. Hope they can keep her comfortable and pain-free as possible in the future. The story about your mom's side of the family is very interesting. Is the plan to publish your memoirs so the general public can read them?
My DH is going thru his loss of appetite thing again. He tells me not to stress but I still rack my brain to fix a nutritious meal with at least protein and a veggie for him to eat at dinnertime. He says something sounds good then just picks at it. Seems he goes through this every year at Christmas time. So, I have a fridge and freezer full of leftovers that I’ll have to eat… roast beef with carrots and potatoes, thick and yummy chicken noodle soup. I refuse to toss them out. I remind him there’s Ensure in the fridge and sometimes he’ll drink some just to keep me happy.
I have had a crazy itching thing on my right forearm. No rash, no break-out or hives. Just itches and sometimes wakes me up. I try to keep a lot of good moisturizer on it and since I’m not working, I am able to get away with not showering every day, so I don't think it's dry skin or doesn't seem to be. Thankfully, Benadryl cream takes care of it quickly. I remember my mom had the same thing. I wonder if it’s related to a type of shingles? I am not complaining, it could be worse!
I have been woefully negligent in eating healthy food. Starting on my shopping list today (will head to town tomorrow once the roads are guaranteed to be good) and adding spinach and kale. There's something in my brain that says January 1st, it's time to get on the wagon and stay there for a while, and I do. Nothing wrong with getting a head start tho.
OK ladies, be good! I wish the "Awesome" button would return...sometimes "Like" and "Hug" doesn't really do it. Glad to know I'm not the only one who used the "woo" to mean extra special wonderful.

Yes, Heather. I am also sad to hear of the passing of your mother's cousin, and I think what KJ said above is so true about the last of a generation. One of the things that moved me the most about my sister's memorial service was that my dad's oldest brother came. I get choked up thinking about it, even now. Hugging him and knowing that he is the last and that he knew my dad from the day he was born (my dad died about 10 years ago) . . . I don't know. I just felt such a strong connection to him and to the past, and since he was 90, and a WWII vet, I knew that it was probably the last time I would see him -- the last connection to the entire life of my dad.
Still feeling a little melancholic in foggy Oregon.
