Weepy at Christmastime, not usually, only a little misty maybe at some special music or memories. EXCEPT once a few years ago, on the Chiropractor's table was suddenly overwhelmed with such a sense of loss and grief that I began to sob and couldn't stop. Poor Chiro thought she'd hurt me.
Heather Do Tai Chi at home? I sure could and should...
Okie thanks the eggs sound yummy, will make some soon.
Machka, Lanette, Karen and all thanks for the woo info. I, too, thought it was encouragement as in woo-hoo...
Lenora, hope the MD/hospital quickly get your info to your other MD.
Michele, If it were me, I'd be so busy inputting the DVD collection into a spreadsheet I wouldn't acutally DO any of them...
Becca, Suspended is so much better than discharged. Love how you keep your sense of humor.
Beth, saying a prayer for you and yours. ((hugs))
Barbie, Freezing tomorrow? Will there be ice on the sidewalk? Please take care!
pip, LOVE the Christmas Story Lamp ornament
Martha, I got out all the wrapping stuff tonight, then lost energy/interest. Tomorrow is another day.
Marcelyn now that's a great box of tissues!
Allie, Joyce, Janice, Kim and everyone else I missed, read all posts but time to get up from computer.
Hugs to all,
Barbara, the Southern Oregon Coastie AHMOD.5 -
Marcelyn - Brilliant! I guess the right stickiness of tape is essential though. Our new notes are plastic, which would make it easier, but our lowest denomination is £5 . I always take $1 bills when we go to exotic countries so I can tip before we can buy local currency. They can't change foreign coins.
Quiet day today. Got to amend my food order - hope I'm not too late. Make brandy butter and truffles. Do my TYPING.
I am not losing any weight. Grrrrrrrrrr!

The days are filled with drama here at work, tragedy (a student Suicide), intolerance (posters vilifying someone based on their ethnicity) and unethical behavior (a desperate, insecure teacher). I am trying to stay above it all, a smile on my face, playing jingle bells with kids, staying focused on work but oh how my head and heart are aching.
I made the right decision last night—as my phone was ringing off the hook and texts were piling up on my phone about work—I chose to silence and ignore them and put up the tree with DD, touching each little memory on each ornament , working together, candles lit, music in the background, we even looked through a box of old photos and hung up pics over the years from older christmases including a special one of my mom.
So I guess the moral of my story is, live in the moment, appreciate what is beautiful and share it with those you love, model compassion even when things around you are hurtful and dark. NYKAREN9 -
Had a good, fast (for me) 2.4 km run this evening!!
Machka in Oz3 -
Karen in NY - sorry you're in the midst of hurtful and dark moments at work. Young lives lost always seem especially tragic. I always try to keep the serenity prayer in mind at times like those, to "accept the things I cannot change and change the things I can." And hope, of course, for "wisdom to know the difference." It sounds like you're already there.
I am heading into my final day at work until the New Year rolls around, and looking forward to the break. It's been an interesting year, and I always try to take some time at the end of each year and do a look back at the year just past, as well as a look forward to the year yet to come. It brings a nice sense of closure, turning a new page, pick a metaphor.
Minor struggle on the looking forward as, while there is a lot of hope for the year yet to come, there is a tremendous amount of uncertainty. This isn't unusual in my life, but it is mildly uncomfortable, like an itch I can't scratch. I honestly don't know what the year will hold, which of course none of us do... but it seems at higher levels this year. Too many possibilities, many of which are quite positive, but no knowing which way to jump right now.
But, for now, just one day of work to get through, cleaning up our main database. Boring, but necessary.
Love y'all,

BECCA,good luck to your son.

Meg,we have our 2’ tree ,cards around,,a couple special candles & lighted wreath on the front door. That is the extent of our “decorating”.

Good morning all! Happy Thursday! It has been a busy week with the final days of childcare before I go on my break. I also found out that I will be losing a family when I come back from vacation, so I advertised an opening in my daycare. I got quite a few responses and out of those three families contacted me and set up interviews. Two of which were the past two evenings. My third is when I return, in January. Whew! Just ups my stress levels and my DH (at the thought of less income coming in) is about to implode. I think I have mentioned he is a worrier. IF he doesn't have enough in his life to worry about; he will borrow from some one else's life! Anyway, due to the stress level, and his dental issues; he has decided not to make the trip to see DD and her family in Texas. I am sad for him, because if he could just shelve his stress for just a few days and enjoy some time with DD and Joaquin, it would do his heart some good, I think. SO...I was feverishly hunting for a good deal on airfare for myself. Found a roundtrip flight for only $233 out of Chicago and got very excited about it. DH stressed about having to make the three hour drive to Chicago in the winter (I was waiting for the phrase "uphill through six feet of snow"). He asked if I could find anything out of the local (45 minutes away) airport. Yup. But it is almost $300 more! He commented that we were going to spend that much driving, so I should just book that. Yikes! That was the hardest thing I have ever done! I am not necessarily a tightwad; but I bought the basic economy seat which means only one carry on that must fit under the seat in front of me. No seat choice. Basic economy means getting there on the cheap. To me...$520 is NOT cheap! Anyway, I will be in Texas with bells on!
Lenora- So good to hear from you! Glad you are feeling better and I am glad you were on the phone with a friend when the seizures began and that she knew what to do! I am sure Cracker is loving having you home!
Marcelyn- Love the money box idea! How fun!!
Machka- I haven't figured out a way to carry my phone on walks/runs since they started making phones bigger. My little flip phone fit perfectly into the small zip pocket in the back of my yoga pants. As far as keys go; I tie my house key into the laces on my running shoes (not where it ties, but into the lacing). I have tried the arm band and a lanyard style holder, but I seem to have some sort of sensory thing. I need everything, even my hair, to be pulled in tight and not swinging. I just wish the athletic apparel designers would redesign clothes/pockets to fit the "standard" device of the day.
Woo- Huh! I always thought Woo! was like more exciting than Awesome! Kind of a throw your hands in the air "WOO!". I have used it often. I some times think I like my life in "WOO!" mode.
Rye- That is some great swimming! You should be very proud of that!
PIp- Leglamp! "Fra gee lay! It's Italian!" "I think it says fragile, honey!" Love the ornament!
Beth- Hello! Hang in there! I think we are all powering through the holidays the best we can.
Becca- Keeping your older son in my thoughts and prayers. Those hard lessons of youth!
On a lighter note: DD and I were talking on the phone yesterday and she used the phrase "y'all", which made this mid-western mama cringe. I told her so and she laughed. That got us started on local slang of different areas. She said the phrase that is used often in Texas that is driving her crazy is "fixin' 'a". Example: "We are fixin' 'a spend Christmas with my husband's family." Fixin' 'a = planning to or getting ready to. My sister in law stopped over last night and I mentioned this conversation to her and she laughed. She is from the Appalachia area of PA. She told me that if they pull into a parking lot and there are no spaces left, they say that the lot is "parked up". Ex. "It's all parked up." That gave me a giggle. She also found it funny that in Michigan, the food "pigs in a blanket" are sausages wrapped in dough and baked. Where she is from "pigs in a blanket" are a sausage/rice mixture wrapped in cabbage leaves and baked. We call those "cabbage rolls".
Well, hubby just woke up- cross as a bear. He is having a tooth out today. I hope they give him strong pain meds and he sleeps for a while (two or three days maybe?)
Kids arriving! Hugs to all who need them! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)6 -
Day in the life of Machka ...
Mad dash to work ... walk + bus + walk for a total of about 40 minutes, usually. Sometimes more.
Work, work, work
An hour for lunch during which time I dash madly about shopping or hiking off to the botanical gardens or somewhere else. Today I shopped.
Work, work, work
Then the long trek home. I leave home at about 8:35 am and return home again about 6 pm. 9.5 hours.
Quick snack and a little bit of TV ... and then we're off again ...
Walking, running, cycling, weightlifting.
Dinner is usually somewhere between 8 and 8:30 pm. My husband makes that or we eat out.
And then I can settle down to an evening of laundry (mine only - husband does his own), cleaning the kitchen and/or tidying the house. Today was laundry and I cleaned out the baking shelf to find out what was in there! When I'm in university, much less housecleaning and laundry gets done. I end up wearing some really obscure stuff from the bottom of the cupboard!
And later in the evening, I can finally sit down and work on some projects on the computer until midnight or 1 am or 2 am ...
Anyway, digging through my baking cupboard today I discovered that I have a chocolate truffle mix which I really should use!! I didn't know that was in there! Also my yeast is out of date and should have been kept in the fridge. Oops. And I'm running low on a lot of baking stuff. I kind of suspected I was. I've got a growing shopping list for tomorrow.
My holiday time starts tomorrow afternoon some time and I don't go back until January 2. I'm looking forward to that break from work. So much to do at home!! Finishing going through my pantry is on the list. It's fascinating what's lurking back in there!
And then I really need to get into our home office. That is getting urgent.
In reading all this again, I'm thinking ... no wonder I feel tired a lot of the time, but as tired as I feel, my poor husband has been working even longer hours more days each week (I do 5 days, he does 6 or 7) for the past 2 months and will continue to do that till February.
Machka in Oz5 -
Temperature below freezing but roads and sidewalks dry and safe to walk on. It will be different walking with only the dogs after breakfast as my friend has gone to California for three weeks.
Line dance this morning followed by the monthly restaurant lunch. We're going to my favorite Chinese restaurant so Jake is going, too.

Michelle, thanks, I guess I was not clear. My weight program is 4 week long progressions. My first four week weights were 10lb dumbbells and 6lb leg strap on leg weights. This was doable but just barely. 3 workouts ago on schedule I upped the weight to 12lb and 7lb. My left side is failing (can’t complete the sets and reps scheduled). I’m thinking I should redo the 10/6 lb progression schedule (for both right and left)?
Kelly well this former Chicagoan, current Texan thinks “y’all” should be standard English. I always hated the midwestern “you guys”. Personally tho, I draw the line at “fixin to”. Never heard “parked up” - love it!
On the run... all have great day:
Cin Cin a tutti!

Did Personal Training with Chris Freitag DVD today. The plan for tomorrow is to go to the deep water class.
hmmm...where have my posts gone???
pip - We have a string of lights like your ornament (the leg)
lenora - my daughter says that she uses cornstarch or flour on her cat if she cuts her nails too short and they bleed. She prefers cornstarch. She says that you can also use a piece of bread, put it over the bleeding area. The starches help the blood to clot. She's very good with animals, knows a lot about taking care of them, she works for the NIH but watches dogs on the side. Actually, she saved the life of one of the dogs. She noticed something wasn't right and it turned out that the dog was in end stage liver failure and needed a special diet and special meds or would have died.
The Wii still says I'm in the normal range. I'm really trying hard to stay there. I'll probably go over some next week. One year I really went over and it seemed to take forever to get back to weight so I'm trying to avoid that. But I do have to admit that those cookies I made and are in the freezer and really calling my name. I do make them small so that if I have one it's not as bad as if I were to have made them bigger.
NYKaren - I'm so sorry you're going thru all this,
Denise called yesterday. I don't know, I just got a funny feeling, like she's getting too much like Pete's family (who I think are a low class). I guess it's just that I want only the best for my daughter and I have to accept the fact that she's chosen not to want the best. barbie - what's that saying that you use? "The reason we fail is because we want (something) right now --- I know there's more to it.
Put a load of laundry in. Realized while I was exercising that I should vacuum the downstairs, at least one section. Also want to check the room where Steve stayed to make sure the bed is made
KJ - can I take that opening in your daycare??????? For me, just to be clear....lol Do you know that Denise told us that she's renting a car to drive down here "because they don't want to put the miles on their car". Really, it's good for a car to give it a long distance use and not always stop-and-go in the city. Then she said something about the spare tire. I don't know if she even knows what's the story. Glad you're getting to Texas. I'll be looking forward to pics of Joaquin. I'm a lot like you, I got this arm band for my phone to listen to the radio while I'm exercising. But it just gets too sweaty, I almost never use it. I would prefer to just clip my iPod onto my shorts and put the headphones on. In our family pigs in the blanket were always chopped meat and rice in cabbage leaves. Only problem is that Vince won't eat the cabbage so when I make some I have to just give him the meat. Hey, I have a dentist appt, too, today. But it's not to get a tooth pulled. Good thoughts being sent for your hubby.
Rye - would it be possible for you to use the 12/7 and when you get fatigued drop down to the 10/6. Actually, if your legs don't get fatigued, keep the 7. I'm not sure what kind of weights you have. You can easily change weights on the dumbells, the legs might not work to change quickly but the legs don't give you the problem, only the arms. That would be my suggestion.

Kelly that was my interpretation of woo too. I think the few times I used it that is what I meant. Like an extra cheer. Now I doubt I will use it at all.
Thinking of Mary and how busy she is in her new job. If we don't hear much from her I know this is the reason.
I subbed in a Kindergarten class the past three days. It was an eat your Wheaties class. I even had the principal personally come and thank me for being here. If I do sub next year I will at most take one day the week before the Holiday break. I still will not work the day before the break.

Good morning all,
Marcelyn, I love the tissue idea. I’m going to use your idea for the money I was giving my DD for her to get a passport. Thanks.
Karen, I loved your story of putting up the tree with your DD. I also put mine up with my DD and we had fun looking at all the ornaments. Sorry your work is stressful. Like you said, stay above it.
((Lisa))
Patceoh, here is my never fail peanut brittle recipe.
Peanut Brittle
NOTES:
1. You will need a candy thermometer.
2. Have everything measured and ready ahead of time.
3. Takes about 1 hour of interrupted time because you have to stir continuously. (Pull up a chair to the stove and sit and stir.)
4. To clean pan, fill with boiling water and let set until brittle has melted off.
3 cups sugar
½ cup light corn syrup
1 cup hot water
¼ cup butter (don’t use margarine) (cut into pieces)
1 teaspoon salt
1 jar (16 oz.) unsalted dry roasted peanuts
Combine:
1½ teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Grease two cookie sheets and keep warm in 200° oven.
In a large pan, combine sugar, corn syrup and 1 cup hot water.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly with wooden spoon, until soft-ball stage (240°)
Stir in butter, salt and peanuts.
Continue heating, stirring constantly, until mixture reaches 300°.
Remove from heat and quickly stir in baking soda mixture.
Quickly pour half the mixture over each cookie sheet.
Quickly spread out with wooden spoon into ¼ inch thickness.
Cool.
Break into pieces.
(Makes about 2½ pounds)
Pip, love the leg ornament.
((Kelly))
Ordered the jump rings and clasp to make the bracelet for my cousin to give to his wife. It's not going to make it there by Christmas but maybe he will just hold it until Valentines Day.
Work has been busy but I have to take the car in to the shop to have the tire fixed. It has a slow leak which I hope they will be able to just put that sealer stull in and I won't need new tires.
Can anyone tell me how they insert a picture of a saying. Can't figure it out. Copy and paste doesn't seem to do the trick.
Well, work is calling. This work thing is getting in the way of my social life!
Hugs to you all, Terry

In the UK "pigs in blankets" are small sausages wrapped in streaky bacon and roasted. The pastry kind are called "sausage rolls". It is normal to serve the former pigs with Christmas turkey dinner. Most people love them more than the turkey.
Made my brandy butter to take to Hove with the Christmas pudding. Then I made the truffles, but I think the cream curdled. I've given it a good whisk and it looks better, but I'm not sure it tastes quite right. I'm going to roll them in cocoa anyway and hope for the best.
I've just had a letter from my mother's cousin's daughter in law. Her mother in law died this last September and she only realised I didn't know when my Christmas card arrived at the old bungalow. She was working up to the very last minute when she broke her arm and it turned to /was revealed as an aggressive cancer. This is really the passing of an era for me - the last link with my mother's side of the family. The bungalow in Sussex was a place where we visited my mother's aunt and cousin often when I was a child. They were national champion dahlia and chrysanthemum growers! His wife was this very Irish lady who has just died, who cared for the aging parents with grace and humour. The daughter in law mentions her sparkling wit. And she made wonderful cakes!
I am so glad that on a trip to my home town a couple of years ago with "the girls" I took the time out to go and see them, not long before my mother's cousin died. Also saw their son. This lady was still strong and hearty and they were delighted to see me. She was very lonely after her husband died and carried on working in the old people's home, where she was taken to die.
My mother met my father while staying at their house when she was 15. And so it was the beginning of me. My father's family lived just down the road. My great aunt lived there because she had been sent away into service down there when she was 13.
Such a long history, which has now come to an end. Some of it is in my memoir.
Nice of the daughter in law to write to me. I will email them.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxx6 -
