Thanks Lanette for your encouragement. I hope your husband gets good news at his next appt.

Lanette, wonderful the doctor was able to explain and comfort your DH.
Rye, I sure can see why you were mistaken for a personal trainer...

Lanette ~ Thanks for that information about your husband. It has made me wonder if my DH might have PAD. He says his legs and feet hurt all the time and he has muscle cramps. He had 4 stents in his heart about 5 years ago and had clots in his legs. He is going to the heart doc today and I am going to have him ask about that and also about possible diabetes. His gp has not have him do blood work and that really worries me.

Lanette Your Dr. Paul sounds like a special one. I’m glad you and your DH have him!
(I live a mile and 1/2 from work, but my husband doesn’t like me walking after dark so while the winter light is gone at 8pm now he insists on driving over to bring me home.)
Heather The health and wellness benefits can’t be exaggerated, can they. My surprise is my bat wings (which I totally expected to hang off my arms like fabric) have tightened up some. I credit Barbie and the Strong women books! Well, maybe the swimming doesn’t hurt.
Lisa One of my motivators when I started to look after my health last spring was how unstable I felt. I have always had balance issues due to my disabilities but even just standing was enough to make me uneven or shakey. Before I started with the Strong Women weight routines I had found a number of balance exercises to fit into the odd minute or two. (I think MFP blog was where I first found them, I’ll check.) Honestly, they were quick and painless exercise bites I could fit in at any time and they made a huge difference in my ‘stability’ factor, I think. I don’t like hearing that you are falling down staircases - that sounds worrisome to me.
Okie During one particularly rough patch during weight loss last year the scale was torturing me, it seemed. So I outsmarted it. Our scale sends the weight automatically to my smart phone. So, I started letting it do that but only looking at the entries once a week. I don’t know if you have an option like that but the fluctuations that are meaningless become clear when mixed in with the useful data.
KJ I tried (different brand) of supports like the ones Heather linked to. They were painful to me. So if those don’t work for you, you might try arch support socks or sleeves. The compression sleeves like the inserts Heather uses put too much pressure on my arch for comfort, but the socks were just right! (Feeling like Goldilocks). Search for arch support socks on amazon to see options, the ones I have are not made anymore so I can’t recommend specific ones.
Machka I have concluded that if you and the energizer bunny had a contest of endurance activities that you would win! You Rock!
Logging. I hate logging. As I switch to maintenance I have determined to try to only log on my two fast days a week and if I am nearing the top of my maintenance range weights. We’ll see how that works. Maybe I’ll have to be a lifetime food logger, but I at least want to try.
Ok, COLD day here in TX - temperature in the teans I am told.

Rye - I've seen those socks and have been thinking about them. I wear the cushion pads under the arches, (to the side) where they are not uncomfortable. After a while I don't notice them, though they did feel weird at first. Strangely the only time I don't wear them is when I am running. My new New Balance trainers have a very curved footbed with support for the arch, so I am perfectly comfortable in those.

Carol - Good luck to your husband - are you going in with him? Dr. Paul said the specialist will likely do ultrasounds and also put a type of blood pressure cuff on DH's legs.
Hopefully his heart doc will check all this out. It is worrisome (((Hugs))))
Thank you all for your good thoughts - DH is feeling MUCH better today. Dr. Paul has such a healing touch. He had his hand on DH's shoulder as he escorted us out of the exam room. He genuinely cares about his patients and wants them to be as healthy as possible.

Thanks for that link. I do no 1 and 3 every day, along with some others I picked up from the Internet for my arches, but I hadn't heard of no 2.

RV Rita here. Headachey today and DH is grumpy.

I exercised on Saturday and Monday (Holiday). Today I ran through the exercise plan that I will do for the next month with the trainer. After that there was only time to do the cardio part today - powerwalk on treadmill with increase every 2 min, then decrease every 2 min halfway through. My goal is to lose 1.5 lbs per week. I lost 2 lbs this first week. The first pounds are the easiest. I want to get into good enough shape to hike the AT trail. Not sure on the time yet, but want to hike sections of it when it gets warmer.
Sharron from N. VA7 -
Rye - glad the Strong Women strength training is helping. I am hooked on it! Thank you for the balance exercises. I try to do #1 each day and will add #2. I was doing #3 as part of my Strong Women routine - but I discovered it was triggering some pain in the ball of my left foot . So will lay off for a while.
You inspired me to add half a mile to my walk this morning. With DH being unable to walk far anymore, I need to take advantage of what I can do and get my walks in as much as I can.
Of course, there's Pip and her boot. I don't want it to come to that!

Lanette Your poor hubby. It is so hard to go find out if something is wrong. That level of anxiety can be so debilitating. Good for you that you probed a little & found out what the reason was! I don't know your husband, but if he can go just one whole day without smoking, with the knowledge that he can have his 3 cigarettes the next day, he may find out he doesn't actually need them anymore. The more days he says "I could have a cigarette, but I guess I won't have one today...or at least not right now...", the more likely he will be to quit altogether. I have seen veterans puffing away in a VA Hospital smoking lounge within hours of having an amputation due to PAD. Not a pretty sight.
Shoes I have Crocs that go in the washing machine if they have been worn outside...and I have multiple pairs, so I have plenty of clean shoes to wear at home if I want to. My feet are always comfy. We never ask people to remove shoes when they come over, but most people do, for whatever reason. We have 4 little dogs, so we are always wiping paws, washing rugs, vacuuming, etc. We have a Shark Steamer Pocket Mop that does a nice job & is easy to use. And an old but serviceable Roomba named Hazel.
Logging I have been remiss lately, but Heather has inspired me to log breakfast this a.m.! 382 calories of delicious full fat yogurt & raspberries. I am ridiculously happy that I weighed my food & logged breakfast. And I chose a healthy breakfast that made me happy.
Taxes I am stressing over tax preparations. We have a complicated tax situation & I am a procrastinator, so although I owe nothing, I am behind on some forms & documentation I have to provide the IRS very soon. I am going to have to go through some old mail & papers to find some information & it isn't going to be easy. I am having quite a bit of anxiety over this self-inflicted situation. Ugh. I feel shame & self-loathing when I get to this point with tasks like this that could so easily be handled if done in a more timely fashion. Getting started on the task is difficult because my anxiety level escalates if I don't find what I need quickly. I start getting panicky and then my search is more haphazard and inefficient, instead of methodical. After this is over I am turning over a new leaf concerning dealing with mail, papers, & tax stuff. Any advice from the Organized Club?

Lanette: Thanks for the link to brokenbrain. I'll visit there asap. :flowerforyou:
Wendy: I agree with you about over-exercise triggering appetite. I haven't had that happen to me at any time. Sitting around and boredom are things that trigger overeating in my world. So does the consumption of alcohol. CICO has worked wonders for me & so has staying away from alcohol. :flowerforyou:
Heather: Enjoy the visit with your Portsmouth friend. I hope the treatments your cancer friend will be taking do the job for her and stop the cancer in its tracks.
Rye: Congratulations on the huge, stupendous and fabulous non-scale victory!!! You are gorgeous and it doesn't surprise me that someone would take you for a trainer.
Kate UK: Mary & her DH are in AZ, I think. She's gotten a teaching job & said that he works for the school, too.
Lisa: I hope you work our your foot wear so that you aren't slipping, especially on the stairs. I feel safe barefoot and wearing shoes, but socks are slippery on my wooden floors. :ohwel:
Lanette: I'm so happy that your DH went to the doctor and heard what he had to say about the effects of smoking. I am all too aware of the impacts of tobacco smoke. Both of my parents were chain smokers and it shortened their lives. I also remember the smoky doctor's offices when I was a kid and had chronic bronchitis every winter until I left home and lived in a smoke free environment.
I'm taking our dog to the groomer to have his toenails clipped. He'll be going back to her regularly in the near future. We've been keeping him away due to his back injury. He seems to be improving steadily. That is very good news.

Hi ladies,
Back at work and the morning just flew. Yeah!
Lisa, good job staying out of snack range. I sometimes got to bed early because I’m hungry. Once I get engrossed in a book I forget all about the food. Watch out for those stairs. Does it have a banister?
Okie, my weight fluctuates all the time 2+ lbs. Don’t get discouraged you are doing great.
Kim, I feel for your mom. I’m sure it is hard to see your peers dying around you. What a lonely feeling.
Rye, the young always take it for granted that we don’t know anything about technology. Good for you showing him that we can do it.
Machka, funny that your sister thought spinning was weaving. I can see where she would make that mistake.
Allie, hope you can find a way to not get tired up with things that stress you out. Most things we worry about don’t even happen. Sleep well my friend.
Heather, I’m going to check out those support sock/shoes.
Lanette, glad to hear your DH got some answers. I’m sure it took away part of his worry. We all build things up in our mind which is why I always go right to the dr when I’m troubled about something. I always worry that if I want I’ll find out if I went sooner they could have caught something earlier.
Well, back to work. Take care.

Katla - on one of the laptops, I can log right into the episodes. On the other laptop, I only have access to the sign-up for the series starting tomorrow which sounds like what you found.
Here's the link to the episode I could access - I bet Margaret found this one as well: https://brokenbrain.com/01-epidemic/ I found episode 2 by overriding the brokenbrain.com/01-epidemic with brokenbrain.com/02
Not sure how worthwhile it will be but I'm looking forward to picking up a few tips. I need all the reminders I can get, lol.

I highly recommend this site- particularly the e-book download. One of the book authors is the Strong Women author Miriam Nelson. The ebook even uses the same illustrations as the Strong Women books

Karen - thank you! I ALWAYS appreciate your insight into this medical stuff. We were talking about his smoking this morning - he said he feels he can quit - I like your idea about quitting just for a day. The fact that he's been able to cut back from probably over 2 packs/day a year ago to only three is remarkable...he is almost there. He's so proud that the three he smokes are just half-smoked- he shows me his "butt-bucket", lol.
Probably some more gentle urging from the docs will give him what it takes to stop them completely.
He has been saying he is now past the "nicotine fit" stage - he sometimes forgets that it is time for his smoke. And, since he doesn't go out to smoke as much anymore, he still goes out to take the puppy for a walk. I think there's a chance the puppy walks will be his new ritual.
The vascular surgeon he'll be seeing is a retired Army colonel - I'm sure DH will be bantering back and forth about him working on a Marine, etc.

Hi Sisters,
Lanette, isn't it wonderful to have such a warm healer of a doctor to go to, who helps your mind as well as your body! Sounds like your hubby is a bit of a bottler, bottling up his fears until they release themselves in physical symptoms. My hubby is the strong silent type, who bottles it all up until he's had a bit too much to drink and then the top pops off. LOL (I can just imagine your motherly thoughts for the personal trainer too!)
Lisa, sounds like you are in a position to be a good example and source of strength for your daughter, in so many ways. As you help her to eat better, you will also help yourself. I know I am a role model for my three daughters and I keep that in mind constantly in so many of my decisions.
We had a representative from Head Office visit our agency yesterday and talk to my husband and the new manager. It was my day at home so I missed the visit. However, they told my husband that they want to centralize the accounts which in every day speak means I am out of a job. LOL. FINALLY! Well, nearly. We are going into the bees full-time but no one had discussed with us about who was going to take over the accounts at the office when I left. I didn't want to leave the office in a pickle but now I feel like I am free to go. The only thing holding me there now is the paycheck, which we need until head office pays us out for our shares. We had to take out a second mortgage to buy the travel agency and we intend to pay that mortgage off as soon as we get our share money. That will cut our monthly expenses in half and we will be able to survive on my hubbys income. If I have to leave before they pay us out, then we won't be able to pay our bills...It would be so nice to stay home and get caught up on all the work that needs doing here on the farm. What I would really like to do is finish writing the trilogy I am working on. I'm in the middle of book two. But I also like having my own paycheck as I want to be independent and provide for my horses, dogs, cats and chickens without having to ask hubby for money. So I feel kind of torn in two directions. One, look for another part-time job or Two, focus fully on my writing while helping out with the bee business.
I have to say I'm excited and a little bit scared. I am someone who thrives on Change because I get bored so easily. I never drive home the same way but take little back roads just to ease the tedium. But the whole money thing is pretty stressful! And I am a stress eater. I am trying to change my "comfort foods" to less fattening choices. So I have substituted kombucha for wine and it is working really well, except it is so expensive to buy. Guess I will HAVE to brew my own. But what food will satisfy me? Maybe mashed potato could be a go to. Hot and filling and not too fattening if you don't add butter to it. LOL. What about craving for sweets? Maybe dried apple or banana chips? We have apple trees so it makes sense to dry my own. Gotta start saving money!
So today's agenda, Bees this morning and accounts afterwards. I will need to take a usb to work and get all my documents off my work computer. How do I go about storing things "on the cloud". Do I have to set up an email account of some kind? What website do I go to? Advice from you computer whizzes would be appreciated. Wendy1 -
Kim that happened to my mom too. She lived to age 98. I know it was hard on her. I have lost two friends now plus my sister and both parents. It is never easy.1

(((Allie )) I am trying to write about my problems mid afternoon and trying to think of solutions. Whether they work or not I am doing it to get myself in problem solving mode. I am not doing this near bedtime because I am trying to take less worry into my sleep. I am also setting up a strong bedtime routine that I try to follow best I can. As I said before the big one is not electronics one to two hours before bed. This includes TV, computer, i-phone. I also no longer take calls after 8 unless it is an emergency.
Our family is going through a crisis again. We too have someone in the hospital. My sleep is effected by this but not nearly as much had I not started my routine. Again thinking about the problems do not make them go away, but starting this problem solving journal has given me more hope and better sleep.
I realize your situation is different than mine and you need to find what works for you. These ideas are helping me so I am just putting them out there. Alfie is a blessing!
Lanette only had time to watch about first 10 minutes of 2nd episode. I did look up Dr, Hyman. He was the Clinton's personal physician and has books about about blood sugar. From the intro I can tell his ideas are not always main stream and are outside the box in some cases. As I listen to what he and those he gathered I know I need to keep this in mind as I consider whether the information will work for me. The medical field fascinates me. I know their intention is to help. I also know they do not have all the answers and the field is constantly changing.
I did recently learn in one of the books on sleep that one of the original medical school doctors who taught up coming surgeon was addicted to cocaine. Because he could go for days without sleep because of his addiction he believed all his students could too. A pattern was set and never questioned what effect this has on health care. (England is much more humane in how doctors are taught.) Many of the mistakes in hospitals today are made because of sleep deprived doctors and nurses. I know if I have to have non- emergency surgery I am going to ask my doctor about his sleep.

When I can't sleet because my mind is whizzing, I have a notebook by my bed and I write my thoughts down. Seems once they are down I don't have to think about them because they are stored in the notebook where they will be there for me when I wake up. I've also heard of people who have worry jars and write down their worries and put them in the jar. We each have to find a way that works for them.3

Did 30 minutes of HIIT today. The original plan for tomorrow was to take the deep water class, but they're calling for snow and when it's even called for everything shuts down so I will probably do Denise Austin's Quick Burn Cardio DVD that I was going to do Friday and go to the Friday deep water class.
After exercising went to the other gym. It IS nice. I do think I'll go there, if worse comes to worse I can always go back to the Y. Cleaned some for Rummikub tonight. Want to vacuum later today. Really, need to.
Rye - great for you being able to help that guy at the gym!
Evelyn - so sorry, I must have copied the wrong recipe. Here is the one with the pumpkin in it:
Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: 15 minutes
Cool: 35 minutes
Ingredients:
Donuts
1 1/4 cups moist-style devil's food cake mix (a little less than half a box)
1/2 cup canned pure pumpkin
1/4 cup egg whites or fat-free liquid egg substitute
Glaze
1/2 cup powdered sugar (not packed)
1 1/2 tbsp. unsweetened vanilla almond milk, light vanilla soymilk, or fat-free dairy milk
1/8 tsp. vanilla extract
Dash salt
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Spray a 6-cavity standard donut pan with nonstick spray.
In a large bowl, combine cake mix, pumpkin, and egg whites/substitute. Add 1/4 cup water, and mix until completely smooth and uniform. Evenly distribute batter into the rings of the donut pan, and smooth out the tops. (See HG Tip.)
Bake until a toothpick inserted into a donut comes out mostly clean, about 12 minutes.
Meanwhile, place a cooling rack over a baking sheet.
Let donuts cool completely, about 10 minutes in the pan and 15 minutes on the cooling rack.
In a medium bowl, combine glaze ingredients, and whisk until smooth and uniform.
One at a time, dunk the tops of the donuts into the glaze, coating the top halves. Return to the cooling rack, and allow glaze to set, about 10 minutes. (Glaze will run off; that's why you've got the rack over that baking sheet.)
MAKES 6 SERVINGS
Serving Size: 1 donut (1/6th of recipe)
Calories: 182
Fat: 2.5g
Sodium: 337mg
Carbs: 38g
Fiber: 2g
Sugars: 24.5g
Protein: 3g
PointsPlus® value 5*
HG Tip: To make your donuts look extra beautiful, fill the donut cavities using a DIY piping bag. Just transfer the batter to a plastic bag, and squeeze it down toward a bottom corner. Snip off that corner with scissors, creating a small hole for piping. Ta-da!
I think my sinuses were going to start acting up so to prevent it, I took a Sudafed last night. Sure enough, I was awake around 3. So I just went to the gym early
Rye - I probably would have mistaken you for a personal trainer, too.
Helped Vince finish putting away all the Christmas decorations except for the trees.
Lisa - please be careful
Lanette - so sorry for you and your hubby Glad he's working on stopping smoking
Rita - hope you feel better soon
Rummikub tonight. One gal has said she wasn't coming because she overbooked. Personally, I think something better came along. Another gal cancelled because she was tired and didn't feel well. Another gal cancelled because of "the weather" (it isn't supposed to start snowing until midnight). Oh well....so far there will be 4 of us. The others will just miss out.

Terry - I also find it helpful to write my worries down. I also write down things I need to remember the next day if they are on my mind. If I really can't sleep, a good book is the only solution. I take myself off to the spare room.
We have a house viewing for Thursday at 11 am. Not a good time for us as we will have to rush to finish our exercises, tidy and clean up, put face on and get out of the house. We are normally writing at that time of day. However, we will just have to get on with it. I think we will drive over to the nearby town where we can buy our refill for the soda stream and buy some cheap champagne from Lidl. Hope it's not pouring with rain.
I just hope the viewers are serious.

Lanette: Your link worked and I'm so grateful to have been able to watch. I've signed up for future programs from them. THANK YOU!!!
Katla - I'm glad the link worked.
Margaret - thank you for your input about this series. I'm hoping they'll cover some things I can add to my diet/day which will be a step in the right direction. I like alternative methods as long as they aren't too way-out and are doable for me. If they advise coffee enema's, I will pass on that one. I like my coffee intake the old-fashioned way, lol.
Terry - I don't read when I go to bed, but I am in the habit of taking the tablet to bed with me and watching reruns of British detective series. I'm well into Father Brown again. After half an hour or so, I'm ready to nod off. My mind is calmed I guess. I go to bed super early - between 7 and 7:30 and am generally ready to get up at 3 or 3:30. And start drinking the aforementioned coffee.
Michele - I had never heard of Rummikub before you started to mention it. Can just 2 people play it? My DH and I used to play cards - Euchre and Pinocle were great Midwest favorites but it takes 4 people as I recall. I'd like to get him interested in something like that again - bet it would be good for our brains.
Wendy - I admire your money-saving ideas. And yes, I think you are right about our DH's bottling up their anxiety. Excellent way of expressing it! DH just finished pruning one of the apple trees and watching a young eagle flying over the back yard in the sunshine. I told him it's a good omen. I had access to a some free cloud storage a couple years ago at work called "Evernote". Check it out here: https://evernote.com/ The free version has limited storage - only so much allowed per month as I recall (it might have changed, I let my account lapse) but it worked well and I put all kinds of documents there. I was careful not to plop tax returns and such in it tho - they went on a thumb drive.
I was just thinking over all the topics we've covered here in the past year. Weight loss, health, and exercise - yes. But also very important discussions about what makes us tick - our families, our past and present concerns, celebrations and worries. Newbies, watch us "roll along" and you'll find a place to jump in, lol.
