WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JANUARY 2018

Heather - having your house on the market is SO unsettling. Keeping it picked up and spiffy all the time. Having to leave sometimes within a few minutes notice because viewers are coming. I had to keep reminding myself that there's more than a picked-up house that attracts buyers - will the house need major work soon (new roof or gutters), location, neighbors. I think when the stars line up, it will all fall into place. The last 2 houses we sold were completely remodeled within a year - not sure if that's the trend in the UK. The ballerinas are adorable. Those kids are so photogenic - I don't think I've ever seen a picture of them that didn't make me chuckle.
KJ - Joaquin with the blueberries is too much. Sometimes I think the internet contributes to the world's ills more than it helps. Then I see the neat things it offers like instant communication - your Viber, Skype and access to groups like ours. What a valuable tool it can be.
Katla - cleaner scheduling was the prime reason we "broke up" with the cleaner we had for years, Judy. Between DH or me not feeling well and her own medical appointments, seems we never knew from one week to the next when she'd be here and we were constantly rescheduling. If we cancelled, I'd generally pay her some extra the next time she came. And sometimes I did it if SHE cancelled. DH said I was too generous.
Then, often she'd be late. In the grand scheme of things, that was very minor but DH is quite regimented. Believe me, at least twice a week I still think of calling her. Now, I know her health isn't that good. Plus, with DH trying to quit smoking - she is a smoker and I know being around smokers can be a trigger.
I interviewed a gal last fall who'd be willing to do a once a month cleaning - she said she thought it would take maybe 3 hours to do our house. I found her in the "coffee news" which is a little local advertising circular found in Laundromats, pizza places, etc. She has good references - we'll probably give her a try once we see how DH's medical appointments go. If I don't cave and get Judy back.
I recall even with the scheduling hassle with our former cleaner, I was SO appreciative of the job she did - having a clean house really lifted our spirits.
Barbara - good luck with cutting down on alcohol. I never had a doc tell me to cut down my drinking, but about a year ago I told myself I just had to quit because I felt it was contributing to my belly fat - and I felt guilty that I was not getting things done that needed to be done around here - like work on taxes, etc. (That could drive a person to drink!) I was especially bad on weekends or days off with beer. I never drank during the week, but when I started, I could not drink just one. I think I was a type of alcoholic who could easily binge. Like I am now with sugar!
I need to reprogram my brain to binge on kale!
Marcelyn - now, that's a load of beef and I bet it's super yummy. Nice that nature provided the freezer! Glad you made it back home w/o any mishaps.
Lenora - sending good thoughts your way for your upcoming sonograms & MRI. That's good news you are starting to feel better.
Barbie and Heather - I really don't have any ethical problems with eating meat. I am more concerned with all of the hormones and chemicals the animals are fed that I take into my body. We ate pretty much "organic" when I was a kid. The beef and pork we was pasture raised. The dairy cow ate home raised grain and alfalfa. Very little, if any, pesticides or herbicides. Certainly no added hormones. Consequently, the meat we purchase just doesn't taste right. So in a way, it's just safer to eat vegan as much as possible. I buy organic as much as possible.
Kate - I don't know what's up with the "Broken Brain" links - one time all I got was music as well. Did you try going directly to the link: https://brokenbrain.com/01-epidemic/ I was able to watch the 2nd episode on the gut that way. brokenbraincom/02 I really liked it. The next episode is on dementia which I think will be available tonite or tomorrow.
Joyce - maybe once the cold cold weather is over, your pain will start to subside.
Our minds are so powerful- my DH is pretty much over his anxiety about his PAD situation, but now, my stomach has been in terrible shape. Last night I decided to drink a cup of water with about 1/2 tsp of baking soda. THAT helped immensely and I feel good this morning - can even drink coffee without triggering pain. Thank you to whoever posted the reminder about not letting worry ruin today's happiness.
Here's another reminder not to worry - a favorite of my childhood, lol:
I need to get the tires rotated on my Subaru in the next couple days. The "low tire pressure" idiot light has been blinking on and off. They look fine but one or more is probably down half a pound. Sadly, I skipped the last rotation cycle. Last summer I took it into the Les Schwab, where I got the tires, for the free rotation. The tire tech spent half an hour on the car and came back with a big list of things the car needed to have fixed like the struts. $800 worth of repairs. I was stunned. I took the car over to the mechanics who change the oil - they took a look and said they didn't see anything wrong! Their tech and manager both said you can tell because there's oil leakage and they didn't see any sign!
I know the car will be due for it's 90,000 mile checkup in a few months and will have all of that stuff gone over. The car still drives perfectly fine. I have very nearly been ripped off by car repair places - by the dealer service departments! It's very true they think nothing of taking advantage of women. Twice my DH has had to "get rough" with them on the phone to make them adjust the bill or recheck the car. The last dealer service said I needed a new transmission. DH told them to check the linkage or something like that....guess what, a $15 fix instead of a $1000 fix. Again, I never noticed a darn thing wrong with the car prior to that. GGRR.
So I need to take it back to Schwab and tell the guys to JUST rotate the tires and not bother with any of their up-charge inspection and try to control my temper, lol.
Catch you ladies later!

Evelyn: The things you said about the cleaner are just what we've been thinking. Our previous cleaner was a gem but had to have knee surgery twice and is still working her way through that process. I don't think she will ever be back. :grumble: I know someone who may be able to give us some names. She helped us find a critter-sitter for our dog to stay here at the house with him while we're travelling. That person is an absolute gem. Maybe the friend who recommended her knows a cleaning gem, too. I hope.
Heather: Thank you for your wisdom. At this point I almost wish I'd had the cleaner come, but we are both a bit under the weather & didn't want the intrusion of noise and the need to stay out of the way. What is done is done. She's coming next week and that will be better for us. She has also had issues. She had to go to Mexico on family business and skipped us that week. Her daughter cleaned next door. Why were we skipped that week? I don't know. There are a few irritations with her work that bother me, such as the crooked pictures and not returning things to where we keep them. I'm certainly frustrated with the situation at this point. :ohwell:
Kate UK: Thanks to Lanette, I was able to watch one episode of Broken Brain. I found it interesting and would like to see all episodes.
Barbie: You are absolutely correct that I am not feeling my best just now and should take time to make a decision regarding the house cleaner. This one is following a woman we had for years who was a real gem. She had to quit for health reasons. She had some surgeries on her knees and may not be done with surgeries yet. I don't foresee her resuming cleaning for others. Darn it. :ohwell:
Lenora: I agree with the comments that Margaret made to you. You seem to be doing a good job of listening to your body and doing what is right for you.
I have been under the weather since New Years & have not had enough get up and go to work with Arrow. I'm planning to give it a try today. I'll do what I can. I'll start with lunging him and go from there. I hope DH will be willing go out there with me. He can sit in the car and read. Having him there is good back-up if I'm the only one at the stable.

Katla - Do you employ your cleaner "as and when", or does she come st a regular, weekly time. If it is regular I would pay her for her slot, whether I wanted her or not. The only time I wouldn't pay her was if she couldn't come. I pay my cleaner for my holidays, even though she doesn't have a key. As for the quality of the cleaning - I have found they all have their quirks, blind spots and things they are good at. I have had several who leave things misplaced, probably to show they have "been there". It is annoying, but I have never had a perfect one. I had to ask yesterday for ours to take the cushions off the sofas to hoover under the cushions. If I want a "deep clean" of a room I ask for that and make it clear I don't expect her to get round the whole house. Mine does about half to two thirds, depending on how "deep" I want each room, and I specify the day's tasks when she arrives. Every cleaner has an obsession, for my last one it was the range stove. Spotless!
If your cleaner doesn't respond to your specified wishes, including straightening the pictures, then it's time to change her.
Some of the agency cleaners I have had don't speak much English and it's harder explaining to them. I found one almost flooding our oak floors with water, when I wanted her to use wipes. I think she realised I was horrified!
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx
We pay our lovely house cleaner a set amount each month regardless of how many times she comes to our house. She relies on the steady income and knows she can count on it. I don't believe her other clients have this arrangement with her, as it was our idea and she (reluctantly at first) agreed to it. Now she is enthusiastic about this arrangement. This month she will come only once because she is visiting/helping her sick mother who does not live locally. She usually comes once a week. If we need her to come an extra time before a holiday or meal gathering, or help with a specific task like re-organizing the pantry, she will come an extra time or stay longer. When we were in Sanibel, even though we had neighbors who took care of our dogs, she brought her little girls over to snuggle the dogs, and let them out to pee every afternoon! We didn't ask her to, she asked if it would be okay...what a gem...it all works out, and I think it is fairer to her. We are so darn lucky to have found her. She doesn't do a perfect job but it is good enough for us, and she is always open to feedback.

I just finished watching the first episode of Broken Brain. I found it interesting and hopeful and plan on watching one episode each day until I have watched the entire series.

Katla, thanks for that C.S. Lewis quote!
Had a bit of trouble sleeping last night because I got a bit emotional watching Dunkirk. So intense and sad! But beautiful too in a somber way.

Better this morning ... woke up without the headache ... so the rest of me feels better, too.
Sharon - I agree that you should find an attorney that specialized in Disability Claims and that bein all they do. We had a SS Judge that 'if' you were not confined to a wheelchair he did not think you deserved Disability. My boss was the Federal Magistrate and he was the next step up so he heard (read) the cases that had been denied. When I became disabled we were actually able to walk my through the process and bypassed that portion of it. We knew he would deny mind, because his son was bipolar and even though he would go off his meds from time-to-time ... he did not see any type of mental illness as grounds for receiving disability. I think going though the process of contesting the denial, will take you to the next step (bypassing the SS Judge).
I will look for the 'tart' cherry juice ... maybe they will have a small bottle and I can test it out without spending a small fortune for a drink that I might not like. I don't like Merlot wine too much.
I am upset that I could not 'refuse' the package with the refill of a drug that I was told to go off and did not get put back on it becauses I was having a reaction to it. $125 from my mail order company. Oh well. hopefully that won't happen again.
Need to get off .. so goodbye ladies!

I'm a little behind ...
Rye ... I think I'm a little like you in that I don't meal plan (life is too chaotic really to stick to it), but that I have good food choices available ... and the freezer is my friend as well. I have not had good choices here and that's what I'm remedying.
JanetR and Katie ... sorry to hear of your losses.
Cheri ... happy birthday!
Pip ... cute pic!
Kelly and Heather... loved the photos of your grandchildren
Sharon ... we have heard of others who automatically gotten denials and then needed to dispute. With my son, I have found that anytime we are seeking services or equipment, we almost always get denials from insurance companies and the government and then have to dispute. I'm with you in thinking they go this route hoping most will move on ... because eventually, we've received everything we've asked for! Hoping the same for you!
The beauty of this group is that I'll read through .. sometimes slowly, sometimes skimming ... and then find a comment come back to me hours or even days later that strikes a real chord with my personal circumstances. I'm not sure who posted (Heather maybe) ... but someone said that they logged their food because what was the point of MFP otherwise (or something like that) and that got me thinking about my poor logging habits lately. Today I'm logging every bite! So thank you to whomever mentioned that!
Beth near Buffalo ... cold and snowy ...9 -

IIRC it was Heather. It struck a chord with me too, even tho I hate logging. No w that I’m trying to move to maintenance it might be even MORE important as I try to pinpoint my calorie needs. So I’ve doubled down for now.2 -
Allie - sitting in your pocket, girl. Holding you up.
KatieBug - I'm so sorry about your uncle.
Long, slow day today - ten grants and two major reports with a series of due dates stretching out in front of me, trying not to be overwhelmed. It's temporary... it's just some stupid game my mind plays on occasion, and once I get the first one going, every piece of information feeds into the next. Another snow day here, with the kids home, and my daughter, and everybody's going a little stir crazy, I'm thinking. Should be in the 40s tomorrow, so I can run, and things stay a lot clearer when I can run, for some reason.
Love y'all,

Watched first episode of broken brain. Not impressed so far. It only repeats stuff I have read loads of times in many books. I will watch no 2, but the smug guys are royally p÷××+=% me off and a lot of it conflicts with genetic research. I also found the music in the background hugely annoying - why do they have that? ?? Grrrrrrrrrr! We all know how to be healthy, but few of us do it. 'Speaking to the converted' springs to mind. Of course our medical model is broken, but we all know that. I am constantly railing at the lack of money spent on preventative medicine. Things are changing, but slowly.
I'm pleased to say that, at the moment, my brain and body seem to be on top form, but I am also aware that that could change through no fault of mine. Sometimes we are just dealt a bum hand in life. I'm giving myself the best odds through my lifestyle, but luck is not a lady.

Managed to watch first episode of BROKEN BRAIN, will see what happens with no 2 could the problem be with time difference?
Saw Dr this morning re gall bladder op he advised that take more time if Im not sure. Phoned the surgeon secretary and explained, she was very helpful said she will talk to surgeon she did say of course I will be taken off waiting list. Asked if I could maybe have a clinic appointment in 6 months which she will discuss with surgeon. My Dr said he thought that with any op, if you are not sure then don't have it. As I've said if I was in pain or had problems with food then of course I would have the op.

Hi ladies,
Sue, good news about your eyes. Hope it doesn’t get worse quickly.
Michelle in NC, Hope you don’t get any more snow. That white stuff can be a treacherous. Stay safe.
Barbara, don’t let stubbornness get in the way of following the dr’s instructions. It will take time to adjust but your health is worth it.
Marcelyn, Where’s the beef? In the truck. Lol Drive safe in that weather. There are all sort of nuts that drive like there is snow on the road.
(((Joyce)))
Katla, no use paying for a housekeeper who stresses you out, Start looking for a new one now so that when you want to change you are ready. You are paying her, it isn’t free so you should get what you want. Hope you feel better soon.
Meggiesroad, great job with the exercise!
Wendy, glad your fast went well. The book sounds interesting.
Sharon, I’m sorry you were denied the disability. I certainly understand your anger and frustration. That’s crazy. Good thought going your brother’s way. You have a full plate right now. Remember to take care of yourself. Sounds like the girlfriend needs a heads up. Harmony’s dr can’t tell you anything, but you can call and tell them what you are seeing and what your concerns are.
Pam, good luck with the hypnotist. I went once for eating but it only lasted less than a month.
Machka, great description of how it was walking ono the beach. Lol
Barbie, Chinese food is one of my favorites but have to watch out as it has a lot of salt.
((Lenora)) Glad you feel better tody.
Pip, I think that picture is next year’s Christmas card. lol
Rita, glad to hear your diet is going well. Keep on keeping on.
Lanette, we have brought our car for a second opinion before and found out we didn’t need any work done.
Allie, sending lots of good thought your dad’s way. I’m sitting on your shoulder keeping you company.
Beth, I’m the same way with something I’ve read here coming back to me.
Lisa, you know yourself so well.
Kate, good advise from the dr. You will know when you are ready for surgery.
Well back to work.

Sleep Issues ... I just got off the phone with my mother who was telling me about the best remedy for those with sleep issues. Ovaltine. A glass of Ovaltine. She has everyone she knows drinking Ovaltine at night and they are all experiencing better sleep. Just thought I'd share.3
