WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JANUARY 2018

Hi Gals,
Today is Virginia Woolf’s 136 birthday according to google’s home page, so I clicked through to read a bit about her and found this list of quotes from her and they spoke to me
One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.
You cannot find peace by avoiding life.
Arrange whatever pieces come your way.
For most of history, Anonymous was a woman.
A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.
As a woman I have no country. As a woman my country is the whole world.
I thought how unpleasant it is to be locked out; and I thought how it is worse, perhaps, to be locked in.
Some people go to priests; others to poetry; I to my friends.
If you do not tell the truth about yourself you cannot tell it about other people.
Women have served all these centuries as looking-glasses possessing the magic and delicious power of reflecting the figure of man at twice its natural size.

Kim - Love those... especially the one on the countries women have.
Warehouse sale papers all signed, all scanned and sent, and one page needed to be re-sent. And the original is in FedEx. I would say it would arrive there tomorrow, but knowing Fort Stockton as I do, having lived there for seven years all told, I'm thinking we'll be lucky if it's there on Monday. It really is 90 miles from, well, anywhere. The title company will direct deposit the money straight to my bank account (yay!) and by mid-next week, all done and dusted. Breathing all kinds of sighs of relief, and even more once the money's IN the account (I'm such a cynic). Which reminds me, I need to call and get flowers sent to my real estate agent. She did a great job.
Re: drinking my calories. I only drink my calories when I'm FAR off the reservation, dietwise, and only Icees, a kind of frozen American concoction that probably wouldn't be popular in Britain. Otherwise, tea, coffee and water. Don't drink any form of carbonation--have tried a time or two since the gastric bypass surgery, and it feels like I'm having a heart attack almost immediately with the pressure. Not pleasant. Don't drink alcohol, not because I have objections, it just never tasted good to me. In my youth, I would drink the super sweet umbrella-fied drinks, daiquiris and such, but now, it just doesn't occur to me, so I don't.
I have, however, recently been able to get Meyer lemons very cheaply at our local Walmart, which have about 25 calories per lemon, rather than the 10 for a regular one. Half of one squeezed over the ice tastes AMAZING in iced tea. I've never liked lemon in tea, it was like drinking acid, in my estimation. But that little extra sweetness in the Meyer is well worth the few extra calories.
For those of you who are true believers that you can't count tea and coffee for your liquids, please note, I'd be dead if they didn't act as liquids. I drink weak versions of both, two 12-oz cups of coffee in the morning, and then iced tea all day long... Hot tea on occasion in the wintertime, and usually hot tea at a restaurant. I'm also aware that tea can cause or exacerbate kidney stones, and OK with that. I get a stone about every ten years or so, and as long as I'm alert to the symptoms, can ramp up the hydration, drink a big bottle or two of diet cranberry juice (which I hate, but it's worth it) and flush them on through. Have done that with the last two.
I do love getting older and actually KNOWING my body instead of just living in it like a renter. I can't say I always AGREE with my body, but I do know it pretty well.
Ah... I'm nattering. Finally relaxed after weeks of worrying about this!
Love y'all,

Here is my Burns Night table laid and waiting for the haggis. The whisky bottles are on the far counter, eight of them, though four are almost empty. Each one is different . You can also see the "Wee Jimmy" hats on the counter. They have ginger hair sticking out of them.
Now to make myself beautiful.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx
I hope your Burns Night goes well, Heather. The table looks fab.

Karen - yea for loose pants! Don't worry about the number so much as the feel
Heather - how I wish I was there for your Burns night feast. Everything looks so wonderful
Rye - who knew that what I was doing with my sweet potato was actually better for me than eating it right out of the microwave? I usually cook it in the microwave, cut it up, then refrigerate it until I'm ready to have it with my dinner when I re-microwave it.
Yvonne - I remember one year I had a "backwards" party for Jess. Everyone came wearing their coats on backwards, the table was set backwards, etc. Some of the pictures! Yes, it is harder to get into vet school than med school. I looked it up and there are only something like 30 vet schools in the US. There are more medical schools than that. So the competition is really fierce. I just hope she can swing the finances. The exchange rate between St. Kitts and the US is $1 to $2.50. Yikes!
Lisa - Doing a happy dance/jig for you
Vince and Steve went to Five Guys for lunch. They teased me by asking if I wanted to go with them -- they knew that I'd pass. I reminded them that we're going to go to Outback for dinner. We have three $25 gift certificates. Not sure why Ken & Lynette gave us three. Oh well....I'm not about to worry about it now.

Kelly, I love the idea of using a visual and tactile reminder of moving stones out of a jar for each pound lost. I am going to set up two pretty jars on my desk with polished stones to gauge my progress. thanks for that tip! Wendy3

Sharon, I'm sort of in Victoria, in one of the bedroom communities. Where we are, there really is no danger of tsunamis affecting us. We are higher up and quite far away from the ocean. Thanks for the thoughts tho!
Lisa, so excited for you!
Must dash, trip to Costco in the near future. Hope everyone has a great day!

Lisa - so happy for you to have that stress off of your shoulders!
Allie & Yvonne - I hope you are able to find what you need to move along your fathers estates. My father left things all tied up with a bow so it went very smoothly when I lost him many years ago.
Heather - I hope you had a great time tonight!!

Hugs ladies,
So I looked up coddled vs poached. They, ( the chef goods), say that while both are cooked in water, the poached eggs are still runny yolks, and the coddled eggs are more of a creamy texture. So I guess a well done poached egg is a coddled egg!
Well our talk with the liver doc, and the surgery doc went well. They all have reviewed his case, so he's a subject of much conversation within the transplantation world. So he's got to get an MRI, locally here, and a call from the anaesthesiologist by phone so that is convenient. Surgery called a hepaticojejunostomy will be scheduled. I need to look that one up! But its a surgery like I have mentioned before. We had two hours being in the car before the appointment, so he wants to get it done as soon as possible. He has always had such a positive attitude about things. Even going in for all those ERCPs it was a positive experience, meeting nurses we know.
Our moving up to Whidbey island might be delayed, but it will happen. Even if he finds a house we both like and moves in, awaiting our move in, at a later time. He will be in the Navy until 2020, so money will be coming in.
Making a roast chicken today. Will have it for dinner, before I use it for soup.

OK girls - pics of the Burns Night.
First my brother and DH in the hats, along with my DSIL. In the living room before the meal. You can see they have finished off all the salmon nibbles!!
Then my DSIL took this of us after the haggis had been stabbed and excavated!
It all went well. And I didn't drink too much whisky.

evening ladies~
I am home, my dear hairdresser who is a childhood friend of mine gifted my haircut which was so sweet, then went to pick up Taliah and take her to her ortho appt, new rubber bands and back to school, then up to my dads, was looking through his computer to see if i could find anything, which I didnt...
my work family sent me a beautiful basket.. which I will bring down to funeral home for tomorrow. will check in in the am10 -
Started the day with a hair appointment, then errands to the bank, recycling, and district office. Then I went to the dermatologist for my yearly body check. She biopsied two places, one scratch near my smallpox vaccination scar that has been stubborn about healing, and another random brown patch on my right calf. She also did some cosmetic zaps of three places on my face and three on my arms. Then I went to the dealership to get my car serviced. No gym or walk. My plan was to walk while I was getting my car serviced, but my cheek was hurting from the zap so I didn’t. Still no tile guy. I have an appointment tomorrow for a design consultation, but that store doesn’t do installations. She said she would give me a list of contractors, somebody, somewhere, wants this job, I would think.5

HEATHER looked as though you had a great Burns Night, the table looked lovely
Gym this morning and second day of strict calorie counting
Hugs to all who need them
Watched the rest of Broken Brain and found it interesting and informative re the link between body and brain. I think we all probably know what the experts were saying, listed below in no particular order
SLEEP
EXERCISE
EAT CLEAN
EAT HEALTHY FATS
CUT OUT PROCESSED FOODS
LEARN SOMETHING NEW
DESTRESS
KEEP CONNECTED (family, friends etc)

Wow we are on page 100! We rock!
Heather looks like your Burns Night was quite fun! You are such a great hostess! As we say, the hostess with the mostest! Learning the art of hosting a great party/get together is definitely a lost art. Many young people do not understand the concept. When we stayed at my son and DILs apartment, I took it upon myself to cook dinner, for they hadn't planned anything. Then, when I made my son's favorite dessert (fluffy tapioca), his wife didn't bother/ or wish to learn to make it. She doesn't care for it. There are many items I make for my husband that I don't particularly like, but because he enjoys it, I make it. I don't understand the younger generation!

Lisa - so relieved for you and Cory. I agree, waiting until the check is in the bank. It is exciting to have time and money to plan for the future.
Went to yoga today and think it was a little easier this time. Have a twinge in my left hip that felt better after all the stretches but is aching again.
JanetR- congrats on your 10 lbs and safe travels to CO.
Meg- i agree that it would be so much better if you could deal with stress/anxiety without medication.. as much as you have been through it would be unusual if you didn’t have stress.
Need to get off computer....

Heather, Burns Night looks like a blast. Wish I could have been there with you.
Sharon, great alcohol ink painting. A lot of talent there.
Not a great day today food wise. Ate way too much. Hope to be better tomorrow .
Talked about to a rep from my retirement insurance and it seems I’m right on track to retire at 66 like I plan. Now just have to concentrate on getting debt paid off. First thing is making the final mortgage payment in April. Then I can start using that money to start paying down the other debt. By my calculations everything will be paid off in 3years when I retire. Relieved my mind to know I’m on track.
Bed and book now ladies, Terry

Stats for today:
*17,000 steps
*160 minutes walking Sasha and Bessie
*137 minutes riding the exercise bike

Meg, I agree with others that finding a non medication solution for stress and anxiety is a good idea...meditation and the 12 steps of the program you go to are possible solutions.

Hello! I’m Jayne and live in a small community about 70 miles south of Dallas, Texas I joined MFP last week and came across this group tonight. I’m 53 and have a lot of excess Jayne that I need to loose. I have been on all manner of diet plans. If you can think of it I’ve probably tried it. My trouble is will power for the long haul. At 287 lbs it’s gonna take some determination. I’d like to be a part of your group and being new to MFP I am not sure what to do. I checked the star by the thread name on the motivation and support tab. Do I need to do anything else?
I do have some goals to share:
Log food in MFP everyday.
Stay or below at the 1400 calorie count.
Get my house organized.
Loose 6 to 8 pounds a month.
I would appreciate any advice!
Thank you,
Jayne

Welcome Jayne, from a gal off the coast of Northern Oregon!! This is a great group! All your mental baggage just throw up all in here. We have our site professionally cleaned each evening, so we just have them stack out somewhere... Heehee!
I let MFP decide my caloric intake. Its 1350 a day, but I usually don't eat that much. Take baby steps. I try to concentrate on a simple thing like get my water in for the week, or remember to take my vitamin every day. I am presently at 240 lbs, so I have a ways to go. Much of my goals are things like laugh every day, good stuff like that. Cleaning your whole house seems daunting! Concentrate on just one room a week. That's, throwing, keeping, and organizing what's left. I organize my apartment by keeping stuff in the rooms they belong in. So if you always crochet while you're watching TV, it makes sense to keep it there, then moving it always from a place in another room ( for instance). This will make ya smile!
Take care
Becca
