Hearing loss... I began losing my hearing at the age of 19 and am technically considered deaf, hearing only 6% of spoken conversation. But that's in a hearing test setting. In the real world, very few people recognize that I'm deaf as I've become very good at word prediction and reading lips ... but even that has its limitations in certain situations. Hearing aides have not been successful in the past, but technology changes all the time, so I'm willing to try them again. Ev
    Beth[/quote]

My daughter was ecstatic to get her second hearing aid recently. She is 36 and started going deaf about 5 yrs ago. It is a genetic condition that causes it. It was especially hard for her because she has a degree in vocal performance and sings opera and classical pieces. She took the view that hearing was much more important than her vanity and rocks electric blue hearing aids. She actually was a little disappointed that they aren’t even noticeable even with her pixie haircut. The longer you wait the harder it is to retrain your brain to hear so don’t delay is my advice.

Had my hearing test they said I am fine, in the normal range in both ears. The test done in pharmacy not hospital so not sure how accurate the test is.

Kevin a detached retina is emergency surgery. He risks losing vision in that eye if he waits. I had a torn retina and it was fixed within a day of the tear. If it had detached I would have gone to the emergency room. With a detached retina it is like a curtain going down in that eye and you see nothing. If he still has sight it might be torn. If it is torn and he does nothing he has a 1 in 3 chance of a detached retina and without treatment you will be blind in that eye. If he gets it treated for a torn retina as soon as possible he has a 1 and 20 chance of it detaching. I rarely go to the doctor but when I had a torn retina you could not get me in there fast enough. I did not want to risk losing any eye sight. For his retina go straight to a specialist who treats your retina. He will waste time if he goes to his regular doctor or even an eye doctor. What are his symptoms?

IF IT IS DETACHED THE SOONER THE SURGERY THE MORE LIKELY THEY CAN SAVE THE SIGHT IN THAT EYE!!!!

When my retina tore it looked like I had spider webs in my eye. Then it turned into what looked like a small dots that clouded my vision. If he as these symptoms or cannot see out of that eye he needs to see someone ASAP!!!!!!!

Because I acted quickly the only thing I notice in that eye is it is more light sensitive. Otherwise I lost no vision!

READ HIM MY POST IF IT HELPS!

Hi all: Doing better today although the swelling around the eye is causing some loss of peripheral vision. Still icing and using ibuprofen. DD will be home with the new puppy tomorrow. Dson is picking them up at the airport. Really glad I don't have to do that since my vision is a little off. I am really excited to get the puppy home even though I know it will be a lot of work.

DH who is diabetic and was told by the surgeon to eat nutritious food high in protein decided yesterday that he would eat potato chips with ketchup for a snack instead of a Boost shake because they had less sugar. WHAT? This man has been to diabetes classes three times and also worked with a nutrition coach after one of his heart attacks. He totally lacks common sense.

    Allie - Hang in there.

Rori - Glad to see you posting again and that you had a glorious cruise. Yay for just a few days to retirement!

Katla - Hope your bodily clock gets back in sync soon.

Joyce - Glad you went to choir even though you could not sing. But do you know that humming makes us happy because it releases nitric acid in the brain, so yay for you!

Everyone take care. Sue in WA

Tried the Power Hour class at the Y today. It's pretty muchly like the awesome class they had last year, but it isn't stations, you stay in one area. I do find that I need to really pace myself -- my body really isn't used to the humidity down here. I'm thinking that tomorrow I'll just take a step DVD with me and do that on my own. There really isn't any class that I'm interested in.

KJ - yes, we saw SpaceX take off. Our condo is about 7 miles from the launch pad so we just went out to the backyard and saw it. the closest the general public can get is 4-1/2 miles. It WAS pretty spectacular. Like I said, it just seemed a long time from when the rockets touched down until we heard the sonic boom.

Well...we were supposed to get the new refrigerator delivered today. As a matter of fact, the delivery guy came here earlier than was expected, but I can live with that. I was so looking forward to going food shopping. THE ELEVATOR IS OUT OF ORDER!!! In all the years we've been coming down, it's never been out of order. This time it is. Funsville... Guess I can try to look on the bright side...at least it's in the 80's

I tell you, eating out all the time and staying within calories is really a chore. Vince likes certain fast food places, maybe I can take my own food. Besides, there are some things I want to finish up since we won't have refrigeration for who-knows-how-long.

Allie - why don't you think you need a trial?

Lanette - I went to the MD thinking that I just had earwax buildup and that was why I was having trouble hearing out of one ear. It was clean but he sent me for an MRI. That showed that I have a tumor growing in my inner ear. The good news is that it is very slow growing and in 99% of the cases, it is non-cancerous. He did send me to a specialist, tho who said that he could operate to take the tumor out, but there was a very high probability that I would lose all of my hearing. He wanted me to come back in a year and have another MRI which I did. The tumor didn't grow any so he wants to see me in 2 years unless I start to experience vertigo or something like that. So I just live with turning my head when someone talks to me and sometimes having a small balance issue.

Rita - sure hope your dh starts taking care of himself. I fully understand what a worry it is for you

The gal leading the class today was funny. At one point she had everyone in the class kneel on a mat and face the back of the room. Then she had us turn and look in the mirror and apologize to our butts.

Tracie - that's just wonderful! I'm sure we all can relate to your worry and not eating well, but you got fantastic news so I know that that feeling will be gone, gone, gone and you'll be going down, down, down

Wendy - I so loved reading your post.

The elevator is fixed!!! Unfortunately, by the time we found out it was fixed and called Lowes', they had already brought our refrig back to their store. I was hoping it was still on the truck and the guys could bring it today. But they said that we're scheduled for tomorrow.

Vince has diarrhea right now. In one way this is good for me. He probably won't want to go out to eat

Margaret - so glad you didn't lose your sight

Just went to WalMart. Needed a new wireless mouse for my laptop, litter and wet food for the cats, and Vince got some t-shirts (not that he needs them). He wanted Arby's for dinner and I wanted to get my water consumption up so I got Firehouse Sub chili. then for dessert an apple.

Becca - your car is VERY cute! Just perfect! Does it have a name? Glad this first stage is over for your DH. Do the hospital folks love him - meaning is he generally in good humor there?

Michelle- thank you for the info on your hearing/inner ear tumor. Good to get these things checked out. I am amazed your cats are good travelers and get used to their new home. Bummer about the elevator and fridge. Curses! I think are doing well making do with the fast food places Vince likes-sounds like you are doing your best to make wise choices.

My DH is excited because an Arby's is going in next to the new Taco Bell a couple miles down the road. Oh well, at least I don't have to cook and can eat my kale salad and with avocado and not fret that DH will starve. That's WAAYYY too much vegetables for him anyhow. Jeeze.

    - I am so excited for your new puppy to arrive!!! Puppy fever! Want pictures!! Glad you are recovering but glad you don't have to drive to the airport. I wouldn't like that drive if I had two sets of perfectly good eyes! Husbands and eating - I don't know what shuts off in their brains sometimes.

Wendy - LOL! I hear you on your butt apologizing to you! I inherited a flat saggy one - at least it gives me something soft to sit on. B) The love handles have got to go tho. Hey, great idea about the gamers!

    Tracie
    - your good news made ME happy!

Barbara - good idea giving up the 20 minute limit for mfp! Good job on the meditation. Were you able to find a personality tester -MBTI (Myers Briggs) - I know there are several on the internet that seem fairly accurate. What's really fun is to get your spouse/kids/friends to take it and try to figure out why you do or don't get along with them, lol. On certain issues. ;) Sometimes it helps.

    Heather
    - great pix of YOU and the grands!

    Katla
    - You covered at LOT of the country over the past couple weeks. I don't blame you for being pooped! How's your DH doing after being on the go for so long - is he getting rested up?

Rye - sorry you are under the weather. Keep on resting! Are you having any of the cold weather hitting the Midwest and east coast? I'm not sure how far south the storm is headed.

Marcelyn - love your daughter's attitude about the hearing aids. Why not have neat colors? She sounds like a terrific person - so glad technology is able to help her hearing!

I was on the go most of the day it seems. Had a few minutes to run to the Eddie Bauer factory outlet sale and got a cute little jacket for $10. I like their tops and jackets because they have a nice cut and are usually long enough to cover most of my flat saggy butt! :#:D

DH has buggered up his knee somehow, it's probably just his RA causing him grief in that joint. I gave him some cream from the "green store" and he rubbed it on there but refuses ice or his cane to help with balance. This has happened before and hopefully will be OK in a day or two. He still manages to keep the wood stove lit and haul firewood in.

Right now he's parked on the sofa with the puppy snuggled up against his neck. That's about the best feeling in the world in my book!

    Have a great evening!

Rori: Congrats again on your upcoming retirement. I think you will love it! :flowerforyou:

I am time lagged because of too many time zone changes in the past two weeks for my constitution. I am sooo tired even though I've slept well at night. I don't know how Rori has managed to deal with time zone changes & travel during her career. :noway: I admire her resilience.

Katla: I'm in a good timezone to begin with. Only one hour difference to the west, and only two hours to eastern timezone. So, I think that helped minimize jet lag. My final business trip is tomorrow...I'm not the least bit sad about getting off the road. I have to say, the cruise ship had a an entirely higher level of customer service that airlines and hotels could learn from.

Thank you ladies for the kind comments on my upcoming retirement. Love all the advice and wisdom as I transition to the next chapter.

Tonight I'm enthralled with the Olympic figure skating. Anyone else watching?

Becca: I'm hoping your DH gets his call from the doctors soon. Good luck to you both. :flowerforyou:

Sue in WA: Common sense isn't actually very common. I hope all goes well for you, your DH, & the new puppy. :star: As to my travel time issues, things are settling into a good, homey pattern already. Thanks for the good wishes.

Wendy: I love this! "Dear Wendy, I'm sorry I've been following you around like a bad smell all these years. I'm sorry I've made it so difficult to fit into tight jeans. I'm sorry about those bad times I've made you cry trying on swim suits. I'm sorry I've embarrassed you by making loud noises at inappropriate times..."

Lanette: Thanks for asking about DH. He handled the trip very well & was good company. I was proud of him.

Rori: I watched some of the figure skating. I was sad for the skaters who had goofs in their performances. :ohwell:

I'm starting to catch up on my rest. I've been dragging through life on low energy levels since we got home. I hope to rest well and feel more energized tomorrow.

Lisa, you are Genius! I had a little chat to my good friend Google, and we discussed low-cal frozen drink alternatives. I am just sipping on the result right now and it is a very satisfying substitute. Ingredients: 1 cup of ice, 1/4 cup pomegranate juice, cup of water, packet of weight watchers strawberry jello, give it a whirl in the blender and Whal la= Fake Frozen Fanta. (You don't have to use pomegranate juice, water would be fine, but I am actually getting points here for adding healthy ingredients! LOL)

Joyce, good question: What IS a FrozenFanta? I know what it looks and tastes like but had to google what it actually is. Fanta is a fruit flavoured cola made by coco cola. Sometimes things have a different name over here, but in our McDonalds they sell slurpee/slushy drinks either Frozen Coke or Frozen Fanta. Our Fanta drink is pink coloured and vaguely reminiscent of candy floss or strawberry or maybe even strawberry margarita. So I put it into MFP and found out a large one is 260 cals. Now, compared to two of my favourite cookie icecream sandwhiches which are about 350 each, (and I eat 2 of them!) at 700 cals, I will know which evil to choose when I must make the dastardly choice. However, by far the best choice would be to go home and make it myself for super low cal bliss.

Just a quick skim/post after line dancing.

Michele what was your class apologizing to their butts for?
Wendy your butt apology cracked me up!
Lanette haven't yet looked for a MBTI Meyer Briggs, maybe next week. Joe would never take it, we have no kids, so it will just be me.
Becca fingers X'd for good news.

Next mfp after meditating tomorrow am. . . zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
