Happy Hippo Day!
In honor of the Hutto Hippos (the high school team from our neighboring town): "Bet you didn’t know that Hippo loosely translates to River Horse in ancient Greek. Hippo Day, then, celebrates the third largest mammal on Earth. Why not take some time to waddle in a mud bath, get angry with some tourists, and yawn a lot whilst opening your mouth really-really widely?"
Mary - Thanks for youir offer to help with the kettlebells! I did find three gyms in town that have them, and it doesn't really seem like something I'd need a group class in. Any of them would probably show me the basics and tell me how to do it safely on my first visit, and that's all I'll need at first. When I'm ready to progress I may hit you up for advice on good programs and/or variations. Need to get Dad's estate out of the way, then I'll go visit the gyms and see which one I like.
Beth - You know what is looking to be our biggest stinker? Dad's stupid timeshare! I think we're going to have to pay somebody to be rid of the thing! They bought it when Mom was living and she was a whiz at getting the most out of it. I think it mostly just sat unused after she died.
Vickie - Those are great goals! I think we all get to skimming now and then, especially when there are a lot of posts. A lot of us also have been dealing with major life events... I can't speak for the rest, but I know it's had me distracted lately. Please know that you are welcome here, and many of us understand what it's like to fight the weight battle over and over again.
KJ - Sorry your husband burned his mouth, but what a hilarious story it left you! I'm a big meanie, so if Philip had done that I'd probably have sent him the Google search link instead. ;P
Becca - LOL! Poking myself in the eye with the coffee spoon is just the sort of thing I'd do with my first cup of the morning. Good thing I take it black and bitter!
Sue - I want to dognap Nessa, she's so cute!
Wendy - Wouldn't it be terrible if the bees started a nest in your visitors' car? (Nice car... be a shame if anything happened to it... ) Philip's and my current bedtime story book makes me think of you and your queens. It's "City of the Bees" by Frank S. Stuart. The Kirkus review says, "A poetic, to lyric account of one year of life in a wild bee colony, that follows in the Maeterlinck tradition of treating this unique insect with not only respect but with a mysticism that enlarges and emphasizes the distinctive characteristics of bee history." Written in 1947, it's incredibly florid and more than a little anthropomorphic, but also pretty fabulous. The writing is gorgeous.
Blackburn - I've got about the same amount to lose as you. It's daunting, but taking it day by day definitely helps. Not to mention having a grandbaby on the way as a motivator!
Good grief... I didn't sleep well last night and finally gave up and read until daylight. As a result, I forgot to eat breakfast - a rare oversight for me! No wonder I was starving by lunchtime.
I'm sick at heart over events in my country this week. We've taken what I think are some very ugly turns in recent years, and all any of us can do is get our voices (and our VOTES) out there. "Thoughts and prayers" aren't going to fix it on their own.
I have to drive to Houston again tomorrow, so I'll likely be MIA from the community until I get back.
Love and light to all.

I love keto diet! Right now I am on maintenance and my body is very low fat probably under 20%. I am on a recomposition to gain muscle mass. Keto is responsible for my fat loss and my husbands 20 pounds of belly fat loss. When I eat I do mainly eat keto diet but no longer need to lose fat. It's an excellent diet as is low-carb. Karen gave you a great link to a site that I would also recommend. I also do intermittent fasting 19:5 which is a five hour window of eating. I love the kettle bell for a complete body and strength training work out.

Wendy: Thanks for all the info on making the Queens. I would hate to have to put on so many clothes to stay unbitten. It was interesting on the Dr. Oz show today as they were talking about "fake" honey being imported from China. An author about this said he would never buy honey unless it was certified to come from the country of origin. I hope you make lots of money on your business as I'm sure yours will be the very best.

Yvonne, thanks for the tip of City of Bees. I will be seeing if I can get it on audio.
Mary, I have had similar episodes feeling bug on head in bed, had a weta on me once. EEEEK! At least I found it and put it outside. I can't sleep in bed until stripped and de-bugged otherwise.

Wendy sweet Jesus that picture almost did me in.... WOW, facinating about the Bee's I read it all the way through..
I had a accident this morning, wacked into the back someones car and he got out and yelled at me, I wasnt really paying attention and praise the lord no one or the cars were not hurt.. But I think everything is finally catching up to me, I tried to work on the probate paperwork and Reverse Mortgage paperwork, something wrong with furnace and it was only 49degrees in there, stayed for a couple of hours, and came home and cleaned... Having Tom over for dinner, we have to come to some solution to end this that is fair to both of us.
Working tomorrow as I missed tuesday because of court, so that will be ok...
I will be going to bed early tonight as I have to get Tal on the bus tomorrow and then to work7 -
Allie good luck! I don’t really think you should concern yourself with being fair to Tom. Was he concerned with being fair to you when he had the affair? Take every penny you are entitled to plus a little more so you don’t have to struggle and stress over money.
I’m sorry things are just all around crappy for you right now!

Wendy, eerkkk!
Janet, no offense take here.
Slight bladder infection and now on antibiotics. Should be feeling better tomorrow. Didn’t get to sleep until 2 this morning so tired. Day all screwed up and did terrible with eating. I have to get back on track soon. Maybe I’ll feel better tomorrow and be able to think of something other than the bathroom!
Wore one my new sweaters today. This one was $9.99. What a deal.
Well off to pick up DH from work.

Speaking of fake honey, my mother has "honey syrup," which I had never seen before. It's basically sugar syrup flavored like honey. I did not know what to think about that and lost quite a bit of respect for my mother's culinary choices.

Hi everyone! I’m back and ready to get going again. I had a lot happening so I was MIA for a while.
Went to KC for Thanksgiving and when I drove back home, about 400 miles I had to turn around and head to Little Rock. My mom was having a pacemaker put in and she wanted to see me. If you remember we weren’t speaking for a while.
Then I had that flu going around in early December. DH and I both had it for two weeks. Then Christmas came and went. I saw my mom one more time and then she passed away January 5th. Her cremains were interred at Fort Sam Houston national cemetery in San Antonio, Texas with my dad, just last week. My DH and I drove down there; that was 600 miles down and and back. It took about a month for her burial to take place because they’re just busy at the national Cemetery.
During this time I found out I was disinherited! My sister had influenced her to do that. What made it worse, three days after she died my sister packed up all her stuff Into a Uhaul and took it back to Las Vegas.
So, after all the anger and disbelief, I am over it all! Ready to get back on track. I gained 9 lbs but that’s not bad considering all the stress!
How has everyone been?

In splint and sling for another 2 weeks. Shot in hip to try to alleviate shooting pain from hip to shins. Painful!!! Off to get pain meds.9

Vacuumed and then went out by the pool for a few hours. What's nice is that I only need to plug the vacuum in two different outlets, unlike in NC where I need to use more than one outlet. Oh well....
Heather - thanks for getting back to me. When I used the treadmill the other day, it gives a calorie count. I honestly just consider that an estimate. But it seemed much lower than the calorie burned count when I used the elliptical today. Maybe it's because using the elliptical you have to bring your legs up higher than when you use the treadmill -- who knows?
Rori - I remember when Vince worked for Mars they had this clock that counted down to the day of Y2K. Anyway, he used that clock to count down the days, hours, minutes even seconds until his retirement....lol
Wendy - you telling me about all you put on when doing the queens reminded me of the kid in the movie "Christmas Story". Remember, his mother had him so bundled up that he couldn't move???? That's interesting how you make the queens. I admit that I had to read it a few times before I got it. Even then, I'm not totally sure I followed it completely. Sounds like a lot of work
Felicia - good for you getting to that class. I'm proud. I could never do such an early class. 7:00 is about the earliest I can do. And I haven't found any classes at that time. I used to get honey from the guy right down the road from me. Unfortunately, there some problem this year and he doesn't have any. I'm running out
Yvonne - "bees in the car"...priceless
Dans - I'm so sorry about your mother. What a shock that you'd been disinherited.

Michele who is going to play canasta tonight.5 -
Michele - I just looked at the Olympic Skeleton event. Reminds me of when I was a kid, hopping on a sled on our hill and hoping I don't hit a fence post or rock and get derailed! YIKES on this headfirst stuff! My neck hurts just watching it! I miss my cardio right now due to my foot. I'm going to stop and get another pair of the pressure insoles today and fit them into another pair of shoes.
Lisa - enjoy your well-deserved weekend getaway! I bet you and Corey will get some good future planning done, and good idea easing DD back into reality about the childcare issue. Congrats on the Dukan diet success!
Terry - glad you are on antibiotics. I used to have some Azo pills I got at Walmart, non prescription, that stopped the pain and made that wonderful red-orange pee.... a stopgap until I could get antibiotics. I am out and need to put it back on my shopping list. The worst "bladder infection" I ever had turned out to be a kidney stone.
Becca - so glad your DH is feeling frisky!! Love it when they get silly!!! I am admiring those headboard benches. I was SO happy you heard from your eldest son and will see him soon!!
Rori - Looks like your retirement will be very good for both of you. You'll soon be down to single digits. When I retired, it took a while for me to get used to rearranging my schedule around my DH's needs but we're both better off I think. I had envisioned heading out to the gym early several mornings a week, but decided to do my exercise at home and be more relaxed with the scheduling. It took some doing as I tend to be an "anal" planner, lol. Bet it felt good to have the exit interview and I hope management learned some things from your suggestions. I was not offered an exit interview, lol. I had already critiqued them several times whether they wanted to hear it or not, lol.
Wendy - Enjoy the weekend with your grandkids. Storing the visitors' vehicle is interesting. Do you think they'd mind if you "borrowed" it now and then since your van is on the repair list? Hop in, puppies! LOL! Now, that’s some bug!! You are definitely the queen of queens. I enjoyed the lesson.
Kelly (and others) - DH and I often talk about how things have changed since we were kids. There are so many potentially harmful influences now on our youngsters that we didn't have growing up. Social media and the isolation it can cause not to mention unhealthy relationships with wack-o groups, so much gratuitous violence on TV, the impact of processed foods and all of that sugar, both legal and illegal drugs, both parents working or single parent households (less quality time with the kids and less teen parental supervision), etc.
I am reminded this group is not the proper forum to comment on hot-button current events which border on political topics. There are many other forums for folks to share their feelings. Just because some folks don’t want to discuss these things here does not mean they do not care just as deeply.
New folks may not be aware that we really do try to avoid discussion of politics and controversial religion in this group. It stirs up friction between us and takes away from what we are really here for.
Kelly, please take heart that your influence with the youngsters in your care is appreciated. If every child was loved and taught respect for each other like you are doing, the world would certainly be a better and safer place.
I think it was Gandhi who said "Be the change you want to see in the world". We can do this every day A smile or kind word might make all the difference in someone's world.

Dana - So glad to see you back with us. You certainly have had quite a time since we last heard from you. I'm so sorry for the loss of your mother, it was good that you got to see her before hand. Your sister sounds as if she is the kind of person that perhaps you just don't need in life. Good for you for pulling up your boot straps and moving on with you life and making it a happy place to be.

Welcome back Dana!
Michele - My elliptical (we call it a cross trainer ) uses arms as well as legs. Using arms always raises the heart rate and therefore the calorie burn. I like to push rather than pull as I want to exercise my triceps. I use the elliptical for my HI IT as it is the only machine that boots up my heart rate. I use it at a fairly high resistance.

late to the show but anyone who knows me....knows that I am also 15 minutes late....and since it is the 15th today...it works! LOL
I am going to be 50 in August. I am proud of that number. It also looks like I will be retiring at some point this year. I am a police officer and 6 years ago started my journey into the work of bone cancer. The type I had was called a Giant Cell tumor, benign but also a lot of junk they could not identify. Thankfully no chemo or radiation, which was my choice. Lot's of surgeries to save the leg and kill the tumor but didn't work out. I opted to chop it off and the date was Feb 19th, 2014.
The following 2 years was more medications and medications to treat the side effects of the primary medications and then it was more medications to treat the side effects of the second medications.....and then I slowly weaned off by using alternative methods...essential oils, massage therapy, acupuncture and other Eastern medicines. I am mostly med free now but the body has not fully recovered from the onslaught. I am being watched for liver and kidney issues and always looking for that recurrence (high risk factor as well)...my medical team and I joke that I am eventually going to die from the low-level radiation directed at my lungs than the original tumor!
I went from a healthy 175lbs woman (I ran 5 miles every day, walked 5 miles every day, and bike 12-50 miles a day - yes INSANE! I also had a big husky that NEEDED the activity more than I did) to my all time low of 135 lbs (drugs will do that) and now sitting at 190lbs. The new ideal weight should still be the 175lbs but minus the 15lbs for the missing leg = 160lbs. A combination of illness, medications, missing leg, ill-fitting sockets, and MENOPAUSE have created the perfect storm that I am trying to ride it out or find calmer waters.
My endurance levels are still weak. I have now realized that I can not exercise the same way that I use to. I also need those 9+ hours of sleep or I suffer for several days afterwards.
The goals are to keep getting closer to what my Garmin tells me to do. My current step count is only 3,661 for today. Last week it was 2,800!! I swim 4x a week but have to get walking! Good thing for my underground parkade!! It's flippin' cold outside right now! My fake leg is only rated for -10c and its' currently -22c!!
I like being held accountable. I like reporting in.
The goal for the rest of February is to keep track of my meals. Keep the step count moving upwards!
Sorry for the long post!

Dana good to see you back!
None of the students today mentioned Florida so I neither did I. If they had I would let them talk.
We practice lock down drills in schools. Security is much tighter than it was twenty years ago. In some ways you are safer at a school because we practice what to do if a shooter is in a school. I agree it is sad we have to go through these drills. I would much rather prepare them like we for what to do if there is a fire than leave them vulnerable. I did hear they had just put locks on many of the doors in the school where the shooting took place. This practice saved many lives. My take away is where ever you are pay attention. If something is out of place or someone is not acting right. REPORT IT! You never know if it will save your or someone else's life.
They have talked about staging a pretend shooter through the school. I think this would be too traumatic for students. It would be better to do this with the adults. It is traumatic for them too, but it would be done to better prepare them with what to do in an actual emergency.

Kerri - welcome! Glad you found us. Please report in whenever you feel the need, and make your posts as long as you need. You have been through so much - kudos for analyzing where you need to be and how to get there. Stay warm (maybe menopause is helping with that )
Dana - so happy to see you back! Doesn't surprise me that your mom and sis pulled a fast one with the inheritance, from what you said before they were, shall I say, unstable? Glad you are able to put that behind you now. How is your back doing, by the way?
Heather - even tho my doc said keep exercise to a minimum to let my foot heal, I miss cardio and wonder if the elliptical might be OK. When I go to the gym, it seems they are the most popular piece of equipment. I will check it out.
Because of the cold weather next week, DH was able to move his doc appointment to March 2nd. According to Accuweather, we should be back up to 38 at night and 50 during the day. Much better than the low of 17 expected next Tuesday morning.
I did my shopping run this morning. There's a checker at one of the grocery stores who never smiles, and always looks on the verge of tears. A couple years ago she had a black eye. So, I decided my project today would be to try to make her smile. I was the only one in her line and we had the opportunity to make small talk - I managed to get her to joke about something and she actually told me "have a nice day" three times as I picked up my grocery bags. (By the way, I don't blame her for not being cheerful all the time, considering some of the nasty customers that go through these lines! Good gravy!)
I am not saying this to pat myself on the back, but to say I think I got more pleasure out of it than she did. I remember the days I'd have at work when I was feeling depressed or angry about something, and a customer would take the time to smile and say something silly which cheered me right up.
Margaret, I think the "be kind" comment you made this morning was resonating in my subconscious. Thank you for the reminder.

well today is done..
had Tom for dinner and we came to sort of a happy medium, money wise he has to if he wants to keep both places, refinance, but because of what he is paying me in alimony if he cant get the refinancing ,he will sell the home in Florida....
i am not going to go crazy trying to break him, we have to meet somewhere in the middle..
I took 2 meletonin and hopefully I can sleep..6 -
Welcome Kerri, we have a lot of fun and give support here. What is your workout routine, now that you are minus a leg? Are you able to do kettlebell swings? I find them a fantastic core workout and great for the arms as well. Good on you for learning how to use alternative healing methods to get yourself off those liver-killing meds. The body is amazing in its resilience and you can definitely regenerate new and healthy cells. What sort of diet are you following? Do you still have a husky to exercise? Be sure and mark this group by clicking on the star at the top cause new people sometimes can't find us again. There is another group with nearly the same name, but it's not us! (I know cause I made that mistake when I first joined MFP)
Lanette, sounds like you had to really work to get that smile. Well done! Spreading rainbows of joy and random acts of kindness is a worthy retirement exercise.

Interesting news on this front - our son-in-law might be back as early as first week of April! We're giving him a week to settle in, and then we're out of here. The daughter is protesting that she wants us to stay 'til June, but we're making it clear that's not going to happen. We're here because he's absent. He comes back, we leave. We'll work it all through.
And Dana - that means I might be closer to your neck of the woods even sooner than I figured! Arkansas land is still the dream, and we're tossing around Mountain Home vs. Fayetteville vs. Fort Smith as a place to rent an apartment for a few months while we find the piece of land we're looking for. Was sorry to hear about your mom's death, and your sister pulling a fast one. Families are weird. Mine is no exception.
All packed for our weekend getaway, really looking forward to some time to be just us before it's back to the grind.
Welcome, Kerri - more than a few of your countrywomen here on this thread. Welcome to all who are new.

Just lost my post.
Dana, I’m sorry to hear about your mom’s passing. So hurtful to be left out of the will. Been there. Even though my mom and I were very close, I was hurt. I think she decided to take care of those who wouldn’t take care of themselves . Good for you getting over the hurt and moving on.
Allie, good for you taking the high road with Tom and being more respectful to him than he was to you. You can still look out for yourself and be respectful to Tom. (((Hugs)))
Well since I didn’t get to sleep until 2 this morning, I’m headed to bed.
