My second goal is to begin walking the hallways of my huge apartment block. I'm recovering from a fall when I tripped on the stairs a few weeks ago but thankfully I am healing thanks to my chiropractor and GP.

Welcome here ... I lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada for 13 years.
I used to cycle year round to and from work in those conditions! Fortunately, my commute was only 13.6 km round trip, and on particularly bad days, I'd take the bus.

I'm not running very far as yet, 28 mins today, plus the warm up and cool down walking, but I really thought I wouldn't be able to run further than the post box. It was my brother and his wife, who are both overweight and have bad knees, who told me that, strangely, they didn't have any pain while running. That encouraged me to at least start the c25k app, on the grounds that, if it didn't work, I hadn't lost anything. My hips still hurt on a hike, I still have to baby my knee, but the running, so far, has gone fine and I absolutely love it. I still do daily knee, foot and ankle exercises and they have made an enormous difference.
Evidently, the additional exercises do make a big difference to being able to run pain free.
I discovered that my right knee doesn't track well. That's largely because of cycling because cycling only works 3 of the 4 quads and so the strength of those 3 quads pulls the knee out of alignment. That's fine when I'm on the bicycle ... I can ride without pain. But when I run, my knee does something weird.
So by the time I got to the 10K run, was starting to have a bit of discomfort. I was recommended to stay off running for a month or 6 weeks until everything settled, and then to start doing weights and lunges and things to build up that 4th quad. And then I can get back into running.
As it happens, I'm focusing more on cycling now anyway, so that works out fine. And at the beginning of March, I'll start doing more weights.

Won't have time for a workout today and probably won't tomorrow. But I do know that I'll get in a fair amount of steps today. Not so much tomorrow. Well...I won't die.
iamimagine - I've been on here for a few years and in that time I really haven't seen the scale move. Oh, it moves up a pound, then down a pound. But at the end of the day, I've been at the same weight for a few years now. My measurements haven't chaged much, either. But...I do feel good. And that to me means so much. I also find that I tend to jot down on a piece of paper what I had to eat during the day then I log everthing at one time. Usually right before dinner after I've prepared my dinner plate. I also log that food then see where I am. There have been times when to keep under calories I've eliminated one or another thing. I also look to see where most of my calories came from. I find that if I prelog foods, many times I have to change due to circumstances that come up that day.
Mary - I think I asked you this before but I don't remember your answer. Is there a reason why a person couldn't use a weight instead of a kettlebell? I've seen so many DVD's where one of the modifications is to use a dumbell instead of a kettlebell.
Wendy - that's very interesting about Roxy. I may have to ask you for that name again when I get home since I can't really investigate it right now.
Donna - welcome
You know you're in FL when the paper gives not only the pollen index but also the golf index....lol
Better start getting ready to go. I'll go shopping and then meet Vince for the end of the race.

Donna, there seems to be very few ladies in our group that have had any type of bariatric surgery. Lisa in NC and myself being the only ones I'm aware of. I had RNY just over four years ago and lost 125#, I've had a regain of approximately 20 pounds. At the first of the year I decided to get serious about losing the regain and returned to closely following the post op diet given me by the surgeons dietician. Was surprised to see how far I had strayed. So far I've lost 16# +/- I'm one of those that can bounce up or down 2-3 pounds daily. I don't know of anyone here that has had a revision. You'll have to let us know how that goes.
Welcome and best of luck to you on your journey.

Michele- you can definitely use a dumbbell instead of a Kettlebell at first. As you use heavier I think the your grip might affect muscle development because of how you would have to hold the dumbbell with both hands around the center. It might affect your forearms and shoulders.

Day 1
Hi. I’m Mary and definitely new here. At age 57, I’m really focused on reaching my health and dropping those horrible habits that have been holding me back from reaching that goal.
Today is day 1 of that challenge, a day that marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life. And it started with me feeling physically awful because of what I’ve done over the past few days.
My health is directly impacted by the unhealthy relationship I’ve had with Facebook and my eating, causing me to spend endless hours scrolling through and responding to posts that are taking away from me really living life. As a result, I’ve given into my cravings for sweets and crappy foods, only to find the next day I literally feel hung over, shaky, and in a brain fog. That’s where I’m at today.
Last night, me, a cupcake with Ben and Jerry’s American Cone ice cream, along with Facebook sat down and binged. This was after having a pretzel for lunch and a serving of Big Bowl’s Orange Chicken for dinner. The sugar rush hit like a freight train and today I feel like I drank a bottle of wine, and I don’t drink!
So, as of today I’m changing that and I’m determined to live my life in the present, no longer looking for some meaning or affirmation in friends or news posts. And I’ve come here to ask for support in that journey.
Today is my day 1 of many. I’m well aware this won’t be easy. Thank you for reading this and just being there.
Mary

Thanks everyone for the compliments on PupPup. She’s a sweetie and a real snugglebug. Although she looks (and acts) like a little puppy, she is actually about 9 years old. I inherited her (and her mama, now deceased) from my Pastor when he was hospitalized with terminal complications from a kidney transplant (he had many other health issues & surgeries from a lifelong battle with debilitating Crohn’s disease). His wife was not a dog person and had a lot on her plate both before and after Pastor’s death, so he wanted to be sure his beloved dogs would be well cared for. She’s my little shadow around the house, and my exercise partner – not only for walks, but she loves to be held, so I cuddle her while I do some of my exercises and get the benefit of those extra 9 furry pounds.
Lanette - living in rural south-central PA, everyone is friendly and waves even to strangers as they go by on the country roads. One of my former jobs had me traveling to downtown Washington DC, and as I strode down the busy sidewalk to the office building of my client, I had my head up and smiled at everyone I passed. An elderly gentleman stopped me one day and said, “You’re not from around here, are you?” I gave him a quizzical look and he said, “I can tell, because you smile. Most people around here won’t even look at you.” He was from a small town and really missed the personal contact. (And this was well before the days of smartphones – but city folks just kept their heads down and their eyes averted.) He & I had a nice chat before we went on our way. I know that many times a smile or a kind word has made a tremendous difference in my life, so I do try to pass it along.
Pat in Ohio - hope your DH’s health problems get straightened out. It’s a shock to be healthy all your life and then suddenly something goes wrong. I know all too well.
Lisa – congratulations! And hope you had a wonderful time with your man.
Kristen – very wise advice.
Heather – I always love reading about your meals. Always sounds SO delicious and inspires me to not get stuck in an eating rut. I love all kinds of food but tend to cook the same things, and you have inspired me to keep adding new foods or new ways of preparing foods.

We just saw a bobcat!! It was the size of a standard poodle and very stocky and looked just like a picture! The road we are taking is a back road and it has a bunch of dips and almost feels like we are on a roller coaster ride very fun!!

“Lady in the Van” was an interestingly strange movie! I liked it (call me strange!) .

Donna from Winnepeg: Welcome to a great group of supportive women! :flowerforyou:
RunningMaven: Good luck with your lifestyle change. You've found a good place for support and encouragement. The key to success is CICO--an acronym for Calories In/Calories Out. One nice reality is that if we go over our calorie goal, we can do some exercises and earn those calories.
This is starting out as a very rainy day. I'm supposed to join a riding group I belong to for a work party to put up signage for a horse friendly beach along the river. This is not appealing weather but I think I'll drive down there and pitch in if anyone else shows up. I'm not made of sugar and will be unlikely to dissolve in a little bit of rain. I also happen to have good rain boots and rainwear. I checked the weather forecast & it shows rain until about 11, and cloudy after that. This might work out just fine. Keeping my fingers crossed.

pat yesterday I was walking to my car in a shopping center where an elderly gentleman was blasting happy Italian folk music out of his van, kind of cheesy wedding type music that just puts a smile on your face. Well I had to stop and smile at him and he said he could drive around all day just watching people smile when they hear the music!! How sweet!!
We’re supposed to get 7” of snow tonite but are flying out before it hits—lovely neighbor child is gonna look after our sidewalk while we’re gone.
Next post from me will have pix I promise.

Hello ladies:- it's been a lovely springlike day here today. Very welcomed after the cold and damp weather of late. I'm off to a
quiz tonight with my friend. It's a Valentine's quiz, all about love!!! Being twice divorced I don't think I'm much of an authority on that subject! Of course, there's lots of types of love and I dearly love my daughters, my grandchildren and my dear old Dad. The local butcher is providing a hog roast with all the side salads etc.. Should be a good night and I'm looking forward to it. My friend and I are quite good on movies, music and famous people so, hopefully, we won't come last!
Welcome to all the new ladies, I've not been on this group for long, although I was lurking for well over a year.
All the best

I know the street of Lady in a Van very well. I lived not too far from there for 40 years. One of my friends, who is a famous writer, lived in that street. It was chock a block with writers!

Either with positive actions, (something you've been denied of when visitors from hell descended on you), or a good cry. Glad you stood your ground with DH. Your arena is a physical representation of freedom. Freedom you haven't had access to. Take it back girlie, and ride!

I was musing over what that arena represents to me, because it surely is a symbol to me. For one, having an arena was something "rich" people have. I grew up poor and didn't have as much as the other kids had, but I always had a horse, so I FELT rich in the way it really mattered. I never thought I would have an arena but then I decided that if I started taking steps towards creating one, maybe God would answer my prayer. So I started at the top of my hill and began digging. Filling up the wheelbarrow and dumping the dirt at the bottom of the hill. People used to mock me. They called it my "potato patch." I am an introvert and shy, so people tend to underestimate me. They don't know that my favourite quote is by Winston Churchill: Never, never, never give up! My other motto is: Do what you can, don't worry about what you can't. I couldn't afford a machine to move the hill, but I could use a shovel and wheelbarrow. So I did. For years. And now I have an arena. I named it and made a sign for it. It is called Dreams Come True arena. I let anyone who wanted to, come and ride horses in it.
It was like a magnet, attracting the neighbourhood kids. I started the Dreams Come True Club and the kids would come after school to ride there on my lovely wild horses that I rescued from slaughter. It was a free club so that poor kids who could not afford a horse would have an opportunity to ride.
My DH slaughtered that dream and I had to close the club and re-home most of the horses. We split up for awhile but now we are back together.
The arena represents my dream. The bee business is his dream. His dreams have always been prioritized over mine. I am a non-confrontational person and I avoid arguments as much as I can. I had a violent, angry father and I learned early on to shut up. So it is a bit of a victory to stand up for myself and draw a line, in the arena sand. It is not a total victory because he has put two huge railroad containers in one corner of the arena and I can't move them out, but I am doing what I can and moving anything smaller out. I am continuing my work on it today. Wendy

Mary, I grew up near Sacramento (Citrus Heights and Carmichael) and I went to Sacramento State University for my first year of higher education before I got offered a free trip to New Zealand, where I didn't know it but my new life awaited me. Why are you headed there? And so cool to see a bobcat! I am fascinated by desert areas and think that I might retire to a place like Arizona one day.
Michelle- Roxy Dillon's book is called Bio-Young. It is my anti-aging bible.
I went to a birthday party for one of my riding students yesterday afternoon. It was a barbecue at the beach. I took my little dachshund Honey with me. We went for a long barefoot walk on the sand. I do love living by the beach. Maybe I can alternate between beach, desert and mountains. LOL I love change and get bored easily. I ate far too much. Today I am starting a fast. I need to get back to my Happy Place. It is a looong way away right now. Wearing fat pants. Wendy

Wendy - ((( GREAT BIG HUGS))) ... Your situation brings back memories. I've had several occasions when I had my fill and let DH have it so loudly I'm surprised it didn't register on the Richter scale. Last time, DH said "pipe down, the neighbors will hear" and I said in that case, I'm ready to TURN UP THE VOLUME!!! Suddenly he was willing to sit down and talk about the situation and actually give an inch.
Why is it they get so wrapped up in themselves the only way to get their attention sometimes is to do that?? There was a time when I considered trading him in for a different model, but soon realized the different model still was wired similarly. So, I think old husbands are kind of like that 'classic car' that sits in the garage and is driven sometimes. Leaks oil, often isn't dependable, but still there are great memories and you know where most of the wear is and what might break next, lol. The devil I know.
Your visitors reminds me of a couple of my DH's friends who weren't really friends at all, and I drew a line in the sand and told him they were NEVER to darken our doorstep again. They were involved in something totally against my values plus I discovered they were trying to put a friend of mine out of business. I ended up testifying against them at a hearing - they probably thought I was on their side. WRONG!! I "had the goods" on them and they disappeared from our lives.
I found it always pays to be the sober one when around questionable people who are under the influence. If you can stand being around them, sometimes they spill good info, lol. Maybe that's why I like mystery and thriller shows so much!
So you keep digging and hauling. Just be careful in case your DH comes up missing, the local constable might wonder what's under that fresh dirt!
Later - sounds like you are living in the perfect environment, so close to the beach and the water's cleansing powers. You are in that place and his life for a reason and I admire you searching inward to find happiness when necessary.
Janetr - "lost my excuses, found my results" is stellar! Thank you, I've copied that to my desktop.
Netflix is acting weird but I'm going to see if they have "The Lady in the Van". Sounds good. Had lunch with a couple of GF's yesterday who saw and loved "The Shape of Water" and said they would see that movie again!
The term "functional fitness" came up - love it. I think that's my strength routine is all about. Being and staying in good enough shape to live a good life. Can't ask for much more than that.
Ladies, have a good afternoon.

Allie Mary and Lenora have your best interest at heart. Tom does not. Your future is at stake and this divorce and your brother is distracting you from working on the class you need for your job. Focus on what you need to build your future. When you deal with either one of them just tell them that you are working towards building a better future. Then say Goodbye. to them and leave it at that. Less is more.

So last night was fun. Nooo, husband wasn't being bawdy, but I did have a long conversation with eldest son, (on Messenger). I told him to add his two brothers in the group chat of husband and I. So now its all 5 of us! Middle son chimed in last night, and I smiled while sipping my tea. They have always gotten along well. My middle son caters to his toy obsession. Plus I think most young men, when given an opportunity to chat about toys, and computer games, without being embarrassed, will jump in with both feet. And last night they did. 60 comments worth of fun, no adult issues. Then my middle son had to go to bed because he had to work today. They told each other how much they missed each other and loved each other. Awe, I know...sweet.
Ooh eldest son sent me a rental home listing. Take a look! Nice eh??

It will be gone, by the time we officially start looking after husbands surgery, but its one I'll keep track of.
