WOMEN AGES 50 + FOR FEBRUARY 2018

Felicia - I, too, often get discouraged when I see a 20 or 30 something exercising. That's about all you see leading the DVD's. But then I keep reminding myself that they aren't my age, and hopefully they'll be as active as I am.
KJ - one time I dropped my curling iron on my skin on my chest. Fortunately, I wasn't wearing a short that would melt. The doc this time asked what that was on my chest. When I told her how i got it, she just laughed.
Marsha - I'm in Newton. Welcome!
Joyce - I'm sure that Lisa's daughter knows that if her hubby came back with PTSD and it was a real problem, Lisa would change her plans.
Wendy - I think you did an awesome job getting your hubby's chit out. Many times Vince doesn't do something until I put it right in front of him. A good cry helps so much. Good for you exercising your feeling out rather than stress eating
sunkist - sounds like you found a great medium for your exercise. When you're working you core, don't forget the opposing muscles which are the lower back. You also need to work the opposing muscle group
Went out by the pool, came in and started getting dinner ready. Went to the ceramics place here to see if they had my shell ready to take home but not yet so I'll get it early Tuesday. Went to the bank for Vince, then Publix for vegetables for me, then WalMart, back here to microwave the veges and have dinner, divided the veges into individual packs, got things ready for what I'll take with me tomorrow, now here. Will do a little x-stitch, color my roots, take a shower and get to bed. Not sure what time we'll be leaving tomorrow.

I don’t talk much here but I’m with u in spirit. Got a question for me just ask.
I’m the resident boot strapper on-er. I’ll give you a swift kick if u need it to get u back in gear
Hello Boot Strapper On-er! haha that's funny. I'm new and I am glad to meet you. Love the picture of the golden. My late husband and I raised them for years, such a great breed, loving and sweet.
In the past, I've hit the diet ground running, lose fast and furious then burn out (last attempt resulted in losing 30 lbs in 5 months and gaining it back in three). My prayer is that I use wisdom and look at the long term 'lifetime' kind of eating changes rather than how I've always done and failed. It is surely good to be back on the wagon, though. I'm glad I met you. If I ever ask you to kick, make it quick please.

Yes, I am obsessed with watching Olympic figure skating. I just finished watching all 30 men do their short programs. I rode my exercise bike the whole time so I was not idle. Because I watch recordings on my DVR, I have to be careful to avoid news broadcasts or people who might report the results to me before I've seen my recordings.
We have to go to a meeting in Seattle all day tomorrow and can't leave the dogs home alone so we boarded them. I miss them and so does Bernie (the cat). I thought that at least I'd be able to watch figure skating without being interrupted by dogs wanting to go out. Instead, poor lonely Bernie wanted me to hold him on my lap while I rode the bike.
Wendy, good for you for speaking up. Between the unwanted guests and all the stuff in your horse yard, your husband has taken much too much advantage of you and needed to have that explained to him.
I found MFP and this thread at age 62 after decades of failure at weight loss. Thanks to logging food and exercise and making use of what you all told me, I lost the weight I wanted to lose and have kept it off. I made it my hobby and my number one priority.

Barbie where are you finding all the short programs are you going on the Internet and life streaming them or art to have them on TV
Katla, my daughter who is the iPad kind of expert she helped me have one of those Duh moments. There is a microphone on the keyboard on my iPad. When you're wanting to put a comma or a period or anything like that in your comment you do have to stop you're speaking and put that in but all I have to do is talk and it's put on here so down my poor little fingers don't have to hurt so much when I type.
I don't know what's going on but for some reason my blood pressure is good right now and that's different for me I don't feel dizzy with it but I'm going to rejoice with it and save it I guess my blood pressure medicine is finally on the correct program of medicines though just the right amount of medicines and milligram but it's working and we wanted to complain .
That's it for the rest of the night I'll see you tomorrow. Joyce Indiana2 -
Becca, I am an Aries, like Lisa. April 5th. I can be fiery. And impulsive. LOL A bit ram-headed. My DH is also an Aries. Two rams butting heads. LOL But I don't hold grudges or sulk. I blow and then it's over and forgotten.
Lisa, I've mentioned before that my brother is in the Army and married to an Army wife and they have had foreign nannies for years. In between nannies, my mother goes to watch the kids AND the other grandma also takes a turn looking after the littles...so maybe it's your son in laws mom's turn. I told all my daughters that I was through looking after little kids and that if they had children, it was up to them to look after them. "Don't expect me to babysit because I have a life!" That's what I said, but dern it, I do love my two grandies and I don't mind the occasional babysitting night...but even a weekend would do me in. LOL. You and your DH have been saints, Lisa, so don't feel guilty even though DD is packing a sad... Wendy3 -
Alison: You have not let us down. We want to be sure you do not get cheated in your divorce proceedings. You are often too nice, especially to Tom Cat. :flowerforyou:

to all the Newbies. Come often and join in the chat. This thing works!! Please sign your post with what you want to be called. It makes it easier for us to respond to you. Also a location is great, be it specific or general. We are happy to have you join us.
Yesterday I was at the Moose selling tickets. On my way home I went to Walmart and got a Kettlebell. Now to make it do it’s magic, Janet will have to kick it in gear.
Sending love, good thoughts and sunshine to all of you.
I Love you

I told all my children the same thing. I raised my kids I do NOT want to raise my grandchildren. They all care for their own children or have made arrangements to have them cared for if both parents are working. I will babysit and watch for Dr.'s appointments and the such. They usually pay a babysitter if they are going out on a date although I've filled in if they can't find someone for an important date, like anniversary.... I have watched a couple of the families for a few days and wow, it really does take it out of you (I kept four for a week while their parents went on a trip that my son was given by his employer as a work reward!) but for the most part they all take share sitting with each other (they all live near each other and me). The one thing I have relented on the past two years is that I keep the two children that go to public school on their school holidays (not summer break). It is just too hard to find someone to keep the kids and they are at the age that they aren't quite old enough to be left alone but don't need a real babysitter. It has worked out well as I pretty much put them to work. lol Plus I pick them up at their house around 9:30 and return them home around 4:00 so I don't get them at 6 am when their folks head off to work and they get back in time to get their chores done before mom or dad return from work. I will probably do that next year but after that they will be old enough to be on their own.
I love my grandkids but I want to be grandma, not a substitute mom.

Wendy...I like your fire. I have horses too. Hayburners. A lifelong dream and I don’t do anything with them. Good for you for advocating so passionately for your needs. You only have one life and you just took a huge step toward living it6

Ok ladies. I never post here. Been on MFP a long time. Last January I hit the gym and tracked on MFP. Lost 37 lbs in 5 months. It was tough, slow going. Then summer came. Kids were home from school. I did just enough at the gym to stay fit, but stopped tracking. Gained 4 lbs. haven’t gotten those 4 off since last June. I go to the gym 4-5 days a week. Was doing crazy cardio with no success. Was hopping all around, directionless on the weights for months since Sept. Hired a personal trainer who got me on a good lifting program. I’m getting stronger. I have direction. But she cut my cardio way back.
She gave me a good diet plan but life has been hectic and emotionally trying.
This is where I need some ladies over 50. My trainer, she’s a nice kid. But she hasn’t helped me with the support, and that’s why I hired her. It’s not for lack of trying, but she doesn’t live my struggles. She doesn’t know my marriage is in the crapper because I don’t want it to be small town gossip. Doesn’t know a sick kid home from school for 4 days can suck food prep time dry. There is a disconnect. Right now I need support in this moment and I’m hoping this is the place for it.
When I was successful before I was going to the gym nightly. Leaving the family at home. I was on my phone constantly entering my food. Eventually the guilt took over. I felt guilty for not contributing to my family. I can’t do that sort of thing forever.
I’m ready to quit. 4-5 gym days a week since last June and not one bloody pound lost. I tell her this and she says “don’t focus on the scale”. I want to throw the phone. I’m glad my body is taking shape but dammit I need the scale to move. I need it now. Kids are out of school in June. How do I do this while still being present for my family??? Seems I have to choose.12 -

Joyce, we pay for a lot of extra cable channels and one of them is an NBC sports network. We spend a lot of money each month for cable TV and two DVRs because TV is the center of our entertainment.
iamimagine, I don't have children but I have a husband who gets lonely when I'm gone too much so I have dumbbells and ankle weights and a recumbent exercise bike so I can exercise at home.

pip "boot strapper", don't ask me to explain it, but when I read that I somehow couldn't help thinking of that picture of you and Kirby in LV
iamimagine - welcome. Oh, how we all can relate! You'll get lots of support and some ideas, too. We've all BTDT and are continuing.
Michele who is getting ready for the race tomorrow3 -
Allie, what Katie and Terry said! Please don't feel that you are letting us down! I'm sure that everyone on here understands that you just want it to be over with. We just don't want you to get taken advantage of. HUGS for you!!!1

iamimagine, it's true, we do all share your frustration, but I do have to ask... have you taken measurements lately? A lb of fat takes up more space than a lb of muscle, so it's quite possible that all of your work is building and toning muscle instead of making you lose weight.
It's going to be back to the gym for me on Monday, really need to get my butt back in gear, gotta turn some of this flab into muscle! And need to lose some weight! So glad that my back is feeling better, was able to walk up stairs today!!! lol
Have a good one, ladies!

iamimagine wrote: »she says “don’t focus on the scale”
She's right. I don't focus on the scale. I weigh once a month is all. BUT I measure. Every two weeks I take tons of measurements.- neck
- right bicept
- left bicept
- chest (above boobs)
- bust
- bra strap line
- thinnest part of waist
- around the middle at my belly button
- around my "pooch" which is 4 finger widths below my belly button
- hips
- right thigh
- left thigh
- right calf
- left calf
And I see those measurements move. I may not see the scale move but the measurements do. Albeit slowly, but they DO move. And the clothing gets looser.
I lost 55 pounds, regained 5, which I haven't lost. Want to drop another 10 pounds. I've been working on this 10 pounds for a year now but haven't seen that scale budge. BUT I have dropped inches. I'm in better shape. I ran my marathon and will do another one this year. I feel better. I make better choices.
It is tough with kids, my daughter really struggles as she got tired of fixing two meals but she is slowly training her kids to eat the foods she eats. They now eat vegetables they'd never tried before. They are learning to love healthy fats instead of junk food. She stopped catering to their choices and put her foot down and said, kids, it's healthy or starve. Found out they'd rather eat healthy. lol
Try something different on the days you don't have your trainer sessions (I totally get the "kid" comment, my trainer is a kid and he gets the muscle building but doesn't get the women of my age thing) ... DailyBurn is a good source for a daily workout. They have a live workout each day (you can do it later as they tape it) or you can do a program at an intensity level you desire and a focus you want, like cardio, or strength, or even yoga. Find a walking partner. My sister-in-law does all her exercise with the Wii Fit. She jogs in place in her livingroom. I have a rowing machine that I use on days I don't get out to run. Different set of muscles for sure. Today my "running" was pushing and shoving a roto-tiller through the new garden. Definitely going to be sore tonight!
I try to do cardio at least three times a week and strength training two times a week but if I don't get it in I don't beat myself up about it. It's a day by day process and if I find myself overwhelmed, feeling like a failure I've learned it's often because I'm trying to do too much. I'm not allowing for real life to happen and obsessing about just my weight. Varying my schedule, my exercise and just making simple good choices with food make all the difference in the world.
Figure out what works for you and don't give up because you CAN do this and you will.

I only workout at home. I suggest that if you love strength training get a Kettlebell and do Pavel Tsatsouline workout. He was the Olympic trainer for weight lifters and used the Kettlebell to improve lift amounts. Alone it can be just as effective as weight lifting as long as you do progressive overload just like with weight lifting. The longest workout is 25 minutes a day which is 25 one minute interval sets with only 15 seconds of work per set. It doesn't even seem like you are working out but you will have a rock hard body and no fat if you stay committed for a year. If you want further information let me know. Also I love the Keto/or low carb eating you burn your fat instead of carbs. I also do intermittent fasting 19:5 with a 5 hour eating window. Look up Complete Guide to Fasting by Dr Fong. I eat in the evening. Best fat burning time is morning on an empty stomach. Read Become a Fat Burning Machine by Mike Burland.

Hi y’all!
Thanks for the condolences on my mother’s death. I am moving on and focusing on “My Family”.
I’m still can’t get over her passing, but it will be easier over time. Since she was cremated I only saw her for about 50 minutes and she was not prepared as for a funeral. She just had a hospital gown and a sheet over her. I wish I had a brush handy so I could of brushed her hair at least.
Re: Granny hairs. I pluck those suckers out everyday!! As soon as I see them poking their little tops out, Bam! Gone!!
I had a wonderful Valentine’s Day. DH and I walked downtown Hot Springs for a while and got some Mexican dinner. He got me a dozen roses and chocolates.
Hide those chocolates!!
Lisa: coming to Arkansas again? Hopefully when you come you have better weather this time. We love it here in Hot Springs. The weather is more mild than in the northern part of the state.
Have a wonderful evening!!

iamimagine - I'm 68 so haven't had kids at home for years and I'm retired, so I don't really have the time problem. But I don't like spending half my day on line recording food. I discovered a long time ago that if I take time to log in my entire days food the previous night for the following day or first thing in the morning, not only does it help save time, I feel that it helps me stay on track and know exactly where I'm at with calories, protein and carb intake. It also helps save time in food prep, etc. I know what I'm going to cook and eat and don't have to think about it the rest of the day. Of course there are times that plans change and I have to pop on and make the changes.
It works well for me, but then I'm a "planner" by nature6 -
Woke up with a stuffy head this morning! ARGHHHHH! Still managed to get in some low-impact aerobics and walked (chased Oynx around). Onyx is our 1 year old labrabull. She is soooo sweet and intuitive. She kept climbing in my lap today...only problem is she weighs about 50 lbs! We sat and watched squirrel videos together on my laptop. Hilarious!
I have laughed so hard over the granny hair posts! Just what I needed! And I feel your angst! I found my first "black" chin hair about 2 years ago.
Joyce: I saw your post and just wanted you to know that I tried Lyrica years ago for migraines and it really messed with my objectivity. I had a really hard time trying to focus and knew I needed to stop it when I made a left turn at a red light. It was by God's grace another car didn't come through the intersection at that time. My Dr. wanted me to try it again for my fibromyalgia symptoms but I refused. I really hope you will be able to take it without any side effects. I wish you the best!

Mary that is great advice for Iamimagine. You are living proof that the kettlebell and low carb diet /intermittent fasting are a one- two knock out punch to fat. I am going to "trend" in that direction as often as possible, when I am able to get on top of the sugar addiction and stress/emotional eating fall outs.
Iamimagine, have you had your hormones tested? Our age bracket is dropping estrogen and progesterone levels and that is part of the problem with the weight. People are afraid of hormones for fear of breast cancer, but there is a HUGE difference between chemically made and natural hormones. I read a great book by Roxy Dillon, (check out her website,) that explains in detail what we can do with diet, herbs, food, essential oils, supplements to keep our youth hormones pumping, which aids in keeping our weight down too. Roxy is a bio-chemist and studies cells and how they are created. She is also a herbalist, nutrionalist and anti-aging guru. Love her to bits!
Wendy2 -
Wendy - thanks. I will check out your guru as well. Dr Fong has research that supports intermittent fasting as a way to get our bodies to start to produce/increase our HGH levels which he has conducted studies on the affects of people with Alzheimer's and how it can reverse the symptoms along with a Keto diet. Very interesting.
Mary2 -
Marcelyn - I have been busy but have been reading the threads. I still see you're active on the Keto site. I have been eating at maintenance for the summer and even with the chocolate donuts and Coke I have stayed at Goal weight and loss inches. But, my DH and I are planning on a 3 Week Keto challenge so he can drop another 10 lbs of belly fat. I see you have been doing fantastic! You're right about measuring yourself versus the scale especially if weight training or exercising.

Thank you Barbie for creating this page. I am about to embark on a journey. On Feb. 28 I am having revision surgery from The Sleeve to RNY so my goal this month is to stay on track with my pre-op diet. I am excited but a little concerned about the pain and higher risk of complications. I'd love to hear from anyone who has gone through the revision surgery.
My second goal is to begin walking the hallways of my huge apartment block. I'm recovering from a fall when I tripped on the stairs a few weeks ago but thankfully I am healing thanks to my chiropractor and GP.
I live in Manitoba, Canada so it's cold and icy to walk outside in February. It's best for me to walk indoors for now.
I am open to making new friends on the site.

I have been exercising like a demon since 1st January and have only lost two and a half pounds. But I have lost half an inch each off my hips and waist. My muscles all feel firm. Just a bit of squishy tummy to beat.
You can do all the exercise you need in the space of a yoga mat in your house. I'm lucky enough to have my own machines in a spare bedroom, but you don't NEED them.
DJ - I'm not fighting through the pain to run, I'm not having any pain. I'm not running very far as yet, 28 mins today, plus the warm up and cool down walking, but I really thought I wouldn't be able to run further than the post box. It was my brother and his wife, who are both overweight and have bad knees, who told me that, strangely, they didn't have any pain while running. That encouraged me to at least start the c25k app, on the grounds that, if it didn't work, I hadn't lost anything. My hips still hurt on a hike, I still have to baby my knee, but the running, so far, has gone fine and I absolutely love it. I still do daily knee, foot and ankle exercises and they have made an enormous difference.
"People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing". - Dale Carnegie.
"Success comes in a can, not a cannot."
And in eating - as Barbie says - The best diet is the one you can stick too. I lost 57 lbs eating a delicious lowish carb "Mediterranean " diet, that nourishes my soul as well as my body. It includes the occasional alcoholic drink and other indulgences. Only start a diet that you can stick to for the rest of your life, whatever that means to you. Enjoyment is key. If you aren't happy, find out why. No diet or exercise programme will work if we have to comfort eat because our life is c÷×+.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx8
