That is EXACTLY why I am doing some many dreadmill runs now. I am trying to up my pace, but if I just go run 10 miles, it will be a good 2 mins over where I am trying to get. The fact I can do 8min miles with a steady 4% grade for 10 miles on the dreadmill means I am a lot faster than the 9:30-10:30 I run when outside solo.
I have noticed that the more time I spend running at a faster pace on the dreadmill, the faster I run outside. So probably be bumping my dreadmill pace again soon now that I can do 10 miles and not feel spent at the end of it. Pretty sure I could do 13.1 on the dreadmill at 4% grade and 8 mins now - if I could get over how much time I am spending standing in place
I also have noticed that when I drop the dreadmill from my work out, my outside pace slowly slips away. So probably going to keep it in my routine for as long as I have access to the fancy pants ones at work.2 -
@PastorVincent - I'm glad you solved the footpod vs. dreadmill mystery. I don't know that I would trust either one. The footpod has all the issues you identified. There is an economic incentive for dreadmill manufacturers to make users think they ran faster and further so I would expect any dreadmill measurement error to be biased in that direction.
A piece of anecdata for you: I've worn a Garmin 620 or 630 on indoor track workouts without GPS signal. It tracks cadence from an accelerometer in the watch, no footpod; a footpod should be more accurate. It does autocalibrate from my running with GPS. I've found that it under-records the known track distance at an easy pace, but over-records the known track distance when I'm running hard. A buddy who has a 610, with footpod, sees the same thing but with less error because the footpod is inherently more accurate than the watch-mounted accelerometer.
In any case, the error from footpod or wrist mounted watch wasn't big enough to worry about on the scale of how many training miles I ran. I didn't care much about the Garmin-reported pace for those workouts, as the important thing was typically timed intervals of known track distance.
I used to use the watch without a pod but found it was inconsistently different. I think that is because if I grab a drink from my water bottle, or adjust settings on the dreadmill, or wave at someone, or etc the watch though I stopped because my arm was not swinging. The foot pod and the dreadmill have been very consistently different, to the point I could pretty much guess what the other said based on knowing only one.
I trust the dreadmill numbers but that is in part because it does not matter at my level. They will be close enough especially since in nice weather I do most of my runs outside. If a few runs are a little short/slow it will all come out in the wash. Plus, like I mentioned above, it is having a positive impact on my running. If all the numbers are run, and I am still improving, then I really do not care about the numbers I do think the fancy pants dreadmills at work are pretty accurate though. Mine at home, I am not sure about. I plan to measure and check it soon.0 -

Discouraging run today. It was hot and it was windy. I got home and I was at 3.9 but I just didn't have that extra .1 mile in me.

Spent all day yesterday driving for work, 800km = 8hrs of windshield time for 1 hr of total work at 3 different locations. By the time I got home I was tired, grumpy - it was dark and a howling North wind so no run.
Today 10-15cm of snow and another 10-15 coming. Canadian Spring, in like a Lamb out like a Lion.
Hit the pool tonight for Adult swim club so at least I got a little work in.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice on running form. Today I concentrated on squeezing my butt cheeks, thrusting my hips forward and relaxing my shoulders. Never really felt my shoulders were tensed up but in race pictures I’ve noticed that my hands are practically in my face so I tried to focus on dropping them down. I did my long run today since we’re supposed to be getting snow and/or rain in the morning.

Basically during spring thaw heavy trucks are banned from the gravel/dirt road system to keep them from getting torn up (because they will get churned to mud).
A lot (but not all) of our work comes in from those remote sites so things get pretty slow.0 -

Today's notes: 45 minutes easy road this morning. Got in just under 5.2 according to my Garmin, so 5.1 I'll call it. Tomorrow is sure to be interesting, with 6-9 inches (15-23cm) of snow falling on the race course between 1300 today and 0700 tomorrow. Glad it's a somewhat shorter race.

Another 10 miles of beautiful, hilly, moonlit trails for Kody & I last night. It was a tough slog. The temps reached mid 40's F during the day and were still above freezing when I started. There was a crust on the top of the snow which gave way to slush with every. single. step. It was like running in wet, mushy sand. There was just no solid push-off for my stride. My 10 miles felt more like 14. I didn't mind though. Extra effort = extra results.
The moon was amazingly bright. Even though it was just a waxing crescent, there was still so much moonlight that I could see distinct shadows, so again, I had no use for my headlamp. Have I mentioned I LOVE running trails in the dark? With the snowpack there are no roots and rocks to be concerned about either
I did have to slow it down for the last 2 or 3 miles. Kody was draggin' *kitten*. I think he had a hard time in the crusty/slushy snow, so we eased into the finish.
And with that run, I have my first 100+ since last April!! My IT band issue isn't gone, but it's clearly getting better!

Not really anything too grand. I am not fast, I am just enjoying myself, there really is no race in me. I am not into being any faster. The only improvement I desire is to go farther. I have been injured, but not by running. It is just age and life. I do not look into my times so much, only how much further can I go. My job is sedentary and my escape is to run so I can process the junk in my head. My cross training so to speak is yard work on my off days...lots of yard work. Before I run, I stretch. I am trying to work through my hip flexor being too tight, but so far it has not stopped me. Chiropractor wishes I would not run so much, I just tell him to fix it when I am down.
TLDR: do not run fast, you could fall and get hurt...

@lporter229 Although I haven't been at it as long as you (just over a year now), I feel the same way. My age group makes me more competitive, so that drive in me just takes over during a race. I haven't done a lot of races, but I feel it inside me the second I get in the chute.
Trail running gives me the best of everything, really. I have to physically work harder to get my *kitten* up those hills, but I still get brain time to sort out my "stuff." I worry far less about pace on the trail because there's no consistency with terrain. Plus, the scenery sure is better! I've never done a trail race, but will in April. It will be interesting to see how much of my competitive nature comes out that day.5 -

@MNLittleFinn between Wild Duluth and now the forecast for ENDSURE, you seem to be a magnet for tough race weather. That makes me concerned about Zumbro! Stay safe up there this weekend!

@fitoverfortymom I dont' know about that pack in particular but Osprey is a very good brand, and with REI, you can always take it back if it doesn't work out for you. As far as trail racing, I find that while I'm all about the finish during a road race, when I'm in a trail race, it's about more a group effort. If someone nearby falls, you stop and make sure they're ok. If you find yourself running the same pace as someone else, you strike up a conversation. At the end of the race, it's not, "how did you place", but "how did your race go for you?". It's definitely more of a community effort and everyone is pulling for everyone else.
@girlinahat that guy is awesome! When I see something like that I get inspired, and I feel guilty for bitching about trivial matters.

@garygse well done helping that girl. How old was she? In my mid I'm thinking a young teenager but can't imagine she'd be released with no adult to take care of her.
@lporter229 I find myself skipping trail runs sometimes because the closest trail is 10 to 15 minutes away if I drive. I think to myself that if I start the run from my driveway, that's 2 or 3 more miles I could run in the time it takes to drive to a trail. I need to quit thinking that and do more midweek trail runs (which I'm currently doing as my 50M race looms large). It's good to figure out what it is about running which brings you the most joy. And there no reason it can't be more than one aspect, even if those aspects appear conflicting. My absolute favorite run in a long, slow trail run all by myself in the middle of the forest. That's when I feel closest to God and closest to myself. By I also love a good race...pushing myself, passing others, finishing well and getting new PRs. As you say, there is certainly an adrenaline rush there. For me it's about balance. Trail running will always be my primary running love, but I'll continue to run paved races for the thrill of competition.

@7lenny7 yeah, I'm hoping that Zumbro doesn't follow the pattern I've had. Looking at probably a 7-8 hour race, if all goes well..... big assumption there..... LONG range forecast has a high of 55 with periods of rain on the Friday and an overnight low of 33.... Saturday is supposed to be sunny and high of 51... of course, it's all voodoo for the next 2 weeks.0

@7lenny7 I adore REI and I'm just deciding now between the 6 or 1.5. Gonna try them on tonight and make my choice! That's exactly what I'm looking for in being on trail--it's a stronger sense of being part of something bigger than ourselves and finding my people.1

@fitoverfortymom and @7lenny7 - Good to know that I am not the only one that gets caught up in the adrenaline rush of races, even if I don't really want to. As you both said, it's probably about finding a balance. @fitoverfortymom - I can't wait to hear all about your trail race and @7lenny7 -I always love hearing about your trail runs, especially the night runs with Kody. I wish Stella was a more patient runner. Maybe she needs to be introduce to a little zen trail running too!1

@Teresa502 To add to @sarathes - to save the roads from damage the Transportation department will impose a maximum load weight restriction on transportation trucks. 50 to 75% depending on the road. So if your truck could haul 200,000 lbs/kgs during normal conditions you would be restricted to 100,000.
If a load must get through companies will then add extra wheels to the truck/trailer combination to spread the weight out over more tires. An example image below where they have 3 extra load carrying axles at the front on a removal-able pony and a tri-axle trailer with a 2 axle jeep trailer added onto the back end. With 5 extra axles and so many extra tires they are real nasty to drive, need lots of room to turn because of the length and extra pivot point.

Nothing overly exciting to report about last evening's run. Typical route, nice weather, easy pace. Overall an enjoyable but uneventful run. I did wear my new Asic's Nimbus shoes. They felt a little tight in the toe box and my feet were kind of tingly for most of my run. Maybe I will try a different lacing pattern next time. I hope they work out. I really don't want another pair of shoes I don't like. I have this problem with returning things that I need to get over. If you saw my closet full of shoes you would understand.
Lats night in the middle of the night I woke up to go to the bathroom. I must have been still half asleep because when I stepped out of bed, somehow I landed with my toes curled under and I toppled over onto my butt. Today my foot is very sore as a result. I hope it doesn't give me issues on my 10 mile run tonight.
We are supposed to get a heavy snow storm starting tomorrow morning. Just in time for our 8AM group run. At least I will have company to share in the misery. Two months ago I may have been excited by this news, but the daffodils are now up and I am over it.3 -

The only reason I ever check the forecast the weekend before a race is that I can usually feel pretty confident that WON'T be the actual weather on race day.1 -

My story is kind of ironic actually because what you wrote above used to be me. For years and years I ran just to run and because I enjoyed it. I did not care about speed and I rarely ever ran in organized races. Somewhere along the way I ran a few races and then a friend of mine convinced me to run a marathon with her. After all of that training, I naturally got faster and the next time I ran a race I realized that, by virtue of getting older and being a long time runner, I was actually competitive in my age group.
Well, let me tell you, that adrenaline rush of giving it all you've got and finishing at the top of the pack is kind of addictive. So much so that I find it hard to not run all out in races, even if that is not what I had planned. But the truth is, I know that this is not what is best for me and that it actually hurts me as a runner. My goal is to be able to run, not win races or anything, just run, as long as I am able to walk. In order to do this, I know that I need to adapt that philosophy that I once had, your philosophy. I just need to run for the joy of running.
I am looking forward to doing more trail running because I know that trail running embodies everything I love about running, the serenity and peace it brings, along with the sense of community rather than competition. I really wish that running trails was as convenient as running on the roads, because that is what is holding me back. My commitment to myself this summer is not to let that hold me back. I just need to make it happen then same way I make a run happen when it doesn't fit neatly into my schedule.
Sorry for the rambles here. If you haven't noticed, I have been going through a bit of soul searching lately...
Hah! This could be me. I started running in my late 30s. Wasn't particularly fast, but enjoyed it. Enjoyed it enough to keep doing it and even enter a few races. By then I was in my 40s and the 40-49 age-group is very competitive so I was never in danger of placing. Then I started training for a handful of half marathons and found I was getting faster. Next thing I knew, I was in my 50s and suddenly started placing in my races. It's a great feeling, but I'm also concerned I'm getting away from that whole running for the fun of it thing. I'm hoping the parkrun which has been set up near my home is going to help me get back to that.4 -

I do for fun, I actually really don't care about weather for races, I'll go out there and finish it no matter what. It's all voodoo really, too many factors for real accuracy, even in short time frames. Considering the number of time's the forecast has been wrong even within a 24 hour period, I don't believe anything unless I observe it.
On a side note, one meta-analysis I looked at, actually gives accuweather a high accuracy rating, and they are the ones who publish out more than 2 weeks.... it's all computer simulations anyway, based on historical data and current conditions.0 -
