Hi! I’m new to this community. I’m 47 and had surgical menopause last April. I’m pretty discouraged right now because I’ve gained about 20-25lbs since surgery even though I’m a pretty clean eater. I would love having some friends to stay motivated with as I’m setting up new goals. Focusing on exercise every day for minimum 30 minutes and watching calorie intake. Today is Day 1 of the serious start ( I’ve had some trial starts lol). ☺️13

After the extremepump class, went to the Salvation Army. Found an exercise top that I liked, just not sure that it fits but for $3 I’ll manage. Then went to Aldi to get Vince milk
Becca: Thought you might find this interesting: Oregon Food Bank Voluntarily Recalls Pumpkin Seeds Because Of Possible Contamination By Listeria Species. I can send you more info if you are interested.
Went to ceramics tonight. The mushroom is coming along pretty nicely and quickly, I think I’ll take the other mushroom Wednesday and start to clear glaze the inside. Then went to mahjongg. Now home.
CharlieAnn – you did great at the dinner. I love spaghetti squash.
KJ – I’d love to travel but I know that I don’t want to travel by myself and Vince doesn’t care to go. For one thing, he really doesn’t want to spend the $$. Plus, he did all his traveling when he worked. I didn’t get to go but stayed home with the kids. Now he no longer cares to travel and I’d like to.
Yvonne – Vince likes strange music. Hawkwind is a favorite. He likes the Berlin school of music – Klaus Shultz. Things like that. Electronic music some
Janetr – fantastic picture
Lenora – so happy that your wrist is healing.
Rori – so glad you’re loving retirement. You sound so happy
Barbie – I know you’re happy that the pets are at home
Bubbi – welcome

Welcome, you've found a terrific group for support and encouragement. Please give a name to call you and your location so we can remember you when you next post.
Hang in there, it sounds as if you have a positive plan to move forward with.

Last call before they go to the Salvation Army:
I have Kathy Smith's Life Weights to Lose weight DVD and YogaShakti with Shiva Rea DVD. I only ask for the cost of the postage for either one of these (or both). The postage is usually less than $4.
I also have Stephanie Vitorino Body Target, Untimate Weight Training Cardio Workout with Terry Simpson and Cario Metabolic Interval with Gay Gasper. These I would just give someone.
If you are interested, please PM me.

Thanks Janetr OKC. I’m Tracey MI. I’m excited about being in this group!8 -
Hi Gals,
Thanks for the support!
Hugs to all, I am not taking time to respond to all…
Penny and others, actually you can make wonderful flavored vodka with any fruit or even peels, I made great Lemon vodka with peels once.
Kylia – Just the idea that your blind DH can even attempt to fix the brakes on your car is mind blowing; I am beyond impressed!!! I did the brakes on a car once with a mechanic friend and it took two days and I owed him 10 home cooked meals he was so frustrated with me….
Disneyland- Living in CA with grandparents in close-ish proximity to Disneyland made it an every summer family vacation, but that was back in the day when it was much smaller and my folks and us 3 kids would go for the day. I have been back as an adult, and had a trip planned for about 9/20 (right after 9/11 and debated if we should go or not, went and it was great, the park was “empty” by Disneyland standards and everyone had great attitudes.. I actually think it was one of the best trips ever to the happiest place on earth.
Janetr – BEAUTIFUL – definitely a Christmas card!
Working on my check list of family things – I’m trying to do some funeral/burial pre-planning and the cemetery guy( “Family Service Consultant” what a title! ) who doesn’t know me or the history, says would you like to have the plot have room for you to be interned with your brother? Just about gagged on the air! Poor guy didn’t know what was wrong… I just said no… but I must admit it made me think, I don’t know what I really want. When I was younger and what is currently in my will is that I want to be cremated, ashes packed in fireworks and shot off a party boat in international waters as it is illegal on land. But as I age and go to funerals with my mom for her friends I realize that it’s possible that my friends would not be able to go on the party boat for my celebration… so I don’t know what I want to do, I will say that doing something at the same time as we do something for my brother could be a HUGE savings, set up for 1 is about $6000, for 2 is $8000… I can’t face the idea that I’d have to be next to him forever, is that silly? It’s just ashes my spirit would be somewhere else.
Smiles

Kim, it is definitely not silly to not want to spend eternity next to the person who abused you. I know, I know, it's not really you there, but the principle is there and if it would make you uncomfortable while you are alive, you should not arrange it that way. Let him make his own arrangements.
Hi all, I'm way behind to respond to individuals although Kim's was the last post I read so it was still fresh in my mind!
This week hasn't been horrible, but not great either. Today I was pretty much on target, did go over calories, but only by 7, I think it was, so I'm okay with that. Had an early shower and so brushed and flossed early too, really need to get to bed earlier tonite, which means I need to make this quick!
Welcome to the newbies! One lady talked about not being able to do much exercise to start with, the good news is, you don't have to!! All you need to do is go for a walk. It can be to the end of the driveway, if that's all you can do to start, then just do that. But keep doing that. Just incorporate little things into your day, they will add up to make a big difference!
Congrats to those with victories!
So glad to hear of those whose lives are getting back to normal after surgeries (theirs and their loved ones!) and injuries. Hugs to those who are still struggling. Hang in there, we can do this together!

Hi everyone,
I am Stacy (Louisiana) and have mad it a whole week now.
My exercising is starting to get easier. I struggle with a food addiction.
I welcome any advice on this journey to lose 100 pounds and become more active.
I work nights so my schedule is hard on me, but I am determined to make it work.12 -
Hi Stacy Determination was also my key to losing my weight through a lot of bumps and difficulties. Put my stubbornness ( one of my key weaknesses in life) to work FOR me, I did.
There are many different keys for different folks, and if determination isn’t getting the job done, planning, micro-actions and other fantastic strategies can be great too. Coming here, reading these lovely ladies struggles, successes, and encouraging words was another secret to my success!
As for becoming more active, I agree with the sentiment it is important to find activities that you like! It has taken me a year to find a few I enjoy - and I keep trying new exercise and activities all the time. I certainly recommend weights - I love the Strong Women Stay Young program recommendation for weights, and there is a large Kettlebell contingent on this thread - as well as cardio and activity. For me, keeping music on around the house helps me move and unexpectedly added a couple thousand extra steps to my days!
A week is a great beginning, so congratulate yourself and try for another good week this week!

Never been to a Disney Park, LOVE rides, so would love to go.
Weigh myself every day. Bluetooth scale logs it to my phone health app.
Growing up in Chicago in the 1970’s I could walk to three movie theaters so I saw a lot of movies. But we did not have a color television until I was a junior in college in the mid 1980’s. My sedentary ways come to me through my love of reading, not TV watching.
So sorry to hear about the snake pet passing, Allie. I have always wanted to meet a snake. I very much like reptiles. Gosh, your weather is abominable this year!
Kylia, i love your sign off, please do ‘keep kicking’.
Barbie & Becca I’m so pleased your DH’s are on the mend.
Katla, I have never had my own boat, but being out on the water is one of my most special treats. I envy your time with your boat and commiserate at its loss. I’m glad you have replaced it with a fun pastime for you - tho in my mind riding a horse is quite a different type of experience!

Sick kitty still sick. Third ailment in a row. Worried.
We have taken on a project that has a high chance of being a colossal failure, and potentially expensive. But success would be life changing for me (I mean that literally- truly a life changer). I’m afraid if jinxing it, so I’m not going to say more but if I refer to it again I’ll just call it project BB42.
Took a several day ‘vacation’ from work over my bday and I continued to hula hoop most days but I really didn’t get any other exercise in. Got horribly sore doing ‘nothing’ tho so swam extra long today to loosen up all the muscles. Seemed to help.
Doing well on the Hula Hoop Challenge I set for myself in March. I watch the show Laugh-in on amazon Prime while hooping. I was only three when the show started, and the humor is very 60’s focused but I love it.
Ok, gonna try to get some more sleep - have an extra shift at work tomorrow if boss’s baby actually came last night and not just another false alarm.
Rye in TX still struggling with hot flash induced insomnia.7 -
Good morning, all, afternoon and evening,
For those new ones searching for advice, you'll find it here. I personally don't add people as friends within the MFP app, and I'm not the only one, so please don't be offended if not everyone responds to a friend request. We tend to center our communications around this thread, and our amazing and stalwart Barbie begins a new one for us each month, so we all start out fresh and clean again as each month goes by. Bookmark it at the gray star at the top of the page, and it will be easy to find us again. I use my browser bookmark function to make it even easier, but I tend to access the thread on my computer. Whatever works for you. We're glad you're here!
I think the biggest thing I've learned through this thread is the same thing that Rye in TX mentioned, and that's the importance of finding an activity you like. The same thing goes for your eating regimen. I've seen people here who have success with OA, WW, keto, Dukan, eating clean, paying attention to macros, My Fitness Pal CICO (calories in < calories out), and even that includes debates on whether or not to eat your exercise calories back. In the end, it boils down to "find out what works for you, and what you will stick with."
The successes I see here are micro-actions: Logging your calories, if that's your path. Adding in activity you like in small increments. Park your car at the far end of the parking lot from the store to add steps. Small things that are within your abilities will add up to big things as you add ten more steps each day, one more block, one more mile. Do better than you did yesterday. Don't put yourself in competition with anyone (and especially not your younger self!).
Try to remember to sign your posts with the name you'd like to be called, and a location (so we can get to know who you are if there's another one with your same name). You don't have to respond to everyone, I'm certainly not capable of it, but some keep notes as they read in a separate window and then put it all back into their reply as they get to the end. We're a chatty bunch, don't get overwhelmed. The only rules are not to discuss politics or religion--we have every version of both in the group--and the rest becomes clear as you go along.

Hello everyone
I am soon to be 50 and would LOVE to lose about 7 or 8 lbs before my birthday in April. I need nighttime accountability!! I am great in the day but come nighttime I want to eat the house and all. haha. I exercise regularly and don't really eat tons of junk - so I do have that on my side.10 -
I have always wanted to meet a snake. I very much like reptiles.
Rye in TX still struggling with hot flash induced insomnia.
We've got quite a few of them around here, but all/most are poisonous so we keep our distance. You just simply don't walk into long grass in Australia.
But before I came to Australia, I had the chance to hold a snake, and that was a bit of a surprise ... like holding one big, heavy muscle.
And my hot flashes have made a return appearance the last couple days. Just mild ones and I wondered what on earth was going on the first day ... and then I remembered. Oh yeah ... hot flashes. Back into the lightest clothing I can get away with.
I tried on a top today that I was thinking might work for winter ... nice and smooth on the outside and lightly fleeced on the inside. I think I could have worn it because it seemed to be smooth enough. Ever since the measles my skin has been really sensitive so that I can't wear anything remotely rough or textured (half my wardrobe), and hot flashes make it worse. But as soon as I put it on, I was hot, and I thought "nope" ... I just can't buy something that makes me feel hot 2 seconds after I put it on.
I'm sorry you're still going through all that.

Good Morning,
Mother nature is trying to rain/ice on our day today. So far all is calm and just in preparation stages.
Caroline- Life is ever changing. This group of women is non-judgemental and supportive. Stick with us. We have those going through divorce, health issues, family issues, and weight issues. We are here for you. One day at a time and one step at a time. I am not an exerciser though probably should be. I do try to get my steps in each day. I am amazed at the exercises these ladies accomplish. I am currently working on stretching. Remember to start where YOU are. Exercising may just mean just walking to the end of the driveway and back, it could mean running a marathon. There are so many variations. Just standing up and sitting down during commercials. Little steps add up. I don't know your starting point, so these are just suggestions. Just do one thing more than you did yesterday. One thing. You can do this! YOU deserve to be happy! Stick with us and feel free to share your struggles. ((HUGS))
Caroline's post just spoke to me. I had to answer before I finished reading. Now to finish catching up.

Very bad day. Cat is bleeding all over house, looks like UTI on top of other problems. Husband very busy at work. I don’t drive and have to work double shift b/c boss wife has baby last night. And got practically no sleep last night. Very worried. How to get him to vet? Wish I had a baby stroller - he is too heavy to carry in cat carrier for 2 miles so can’t walk there.12

WOW! Talk about support! I think I even forgot to like a few posts as I was reading. I love this group of ladies!!!!
We really are on the same page. Lisa in NC said it so well. We are all different and yet our goals are the same. We all want to be happy and healthy.
Kim in NC- I love the idea of fireworks and ashes! I don't want to be buried anywhere. My family knows my wishes which is the most important thing. Pre-planning does help the loved ones left. I agree with the other ladies, I see no need to be buried near your brother. ((hugs)) during this difficult time.
My favorite part of going to FL, when my husband's family owned property there, was going out on the boat and fishing. That was a new experience for me as I had to learn to drive a boat since husband could no longer see. I do miss being on the water. It was calming.
Tracy MI- Changes in hormones will definitely take time to get use to. You sound like you have a solid plan. Welcome!
Welcome to all! Stay safe wherever you are. Mother Nature needs hormones! I really don't remember such confused seasons when I was a kid......
Happy Spring! In spite of the rain/ice/snow ! Outside activities are coming soon! I just know it!
My fur baby keeping me company as I respond. I really need to get her to the groomer!
Smiles to all!

I second this!
When I had cats (3 of them ... and I miss them all), one was diagnosed as diabetic during the same week that my ex-husband and I split up. Splitting up also meant that I no longer had access to a motor vehicle. So, I used a taxi to get my dear Sabre to the vet the first couple times, and then found a pet taxi service. A couple years later, the pet taxi service did not seem to be around anymore, so I returned to using a taxi to get my kitties to the vet.

Allie we had two in a row here about three weeks ago. Those snows were bad enough but, FOUR. AWFUL!!!!!!! You run out of places to put the snow. Be careful at the intersections too. I know how bad they can get with the piles of snows.
Yesterday, I saw another bad accident along a road I drive frequently. It was at an intersection where a van flipped over. This is the fourth bad accident I have seen and I do not drive that much. I only have 7700 on my new car. I had a close call on this road too because I was pulling over to avoid a mail truck. There was someone in that lane I wanted to pull into. Fortunately no foul. IN my case because I was not speeding I had time to maneuver out of the situation. Be safe my friends. The accidents I have seen were not weather related. I believe speed and inattentiveness were the causes in these accidents. One was health related.

Just in case anyone is curious, for a little while, I have opened my diary (food diary). I will likely close it again in a week or two. But someone else asked about it, so I thought I'd open it for now.
I eat pretty much the same thing each day during the week, and then it varies on the weekend. If I do a really long bicycle ride on the weekend, I might not enter anything ... I can't be bothered tracking what I eat on those rides. But on other weekends, I'll log it all.
M in Oz5 -
Last night was a happy night with the pets home. This is how our life should be.
13 -
Rye - (((HUGS)))) - this might be a longshot, but is there anyone at the Vet's office that could come get you and kitty? Or that might know someone who could-like Heather said, a taxi? May be worth a call and explain it, they might have an idea.
Traci in MI - Welcome! Sounds like you are off to a good start!
Maureli - I hear ya on the nighttime eating. If you can figure out a way to stop eating 3 hours before bedtime and have a total of 12 hours between your evening meal and the first meal next day (intermittent fasting or IF) that might help. I don't do that as often as I should but I have found it really does help with weight loss and my reflux.
Rori - cute blue dress! LOL!
Stacy - Rye has great advice - I am a fan of Strong Women Stay Young. I read the book twice before I even started. Here's a good website about strength training where you can download the book if you (or any of you ) are interested in learning more about it: http://growingstronger.nutrition.tufts.edu/. I love it because I can do it at home (I am not a fan of the gym other than to walk on the treadmill when the weather is icky) with dumbbells I got at Walmart and ankle weights I got at Big 5. The benefits are tremendous, really. Also a lot of gals love their kettlebells! And for sure, walking is wonderful.
Another idea here - have you thought about changing your profile photo to your smiling face or something you love or just makes you happy? I think you'll find most of us started to "click" with weight loss and getting healthy when we started to focus on joy and gratitude. The journey got easier, at least it did for me. Perhaps you are already doing that. ((HUGS))). Stick with us - at times we post our "before and after" photos and stories.
NYKaren - I wanted to mention how exciting about looking at/thinking about your next home. By a lake I think you said? I don't think it's too soon to start thinking in that direction, time goes by fast! Glad you had a good time with DD.
Allie - goodness, drive safely! Sorry about the snake - sounds like he had a very long life!
Barbie - glad the kids are home! I found Animal, Vegetable, Miracle at the library and was able to download it. Can't wait to read it! Love your sentiment about a "happy night with the pets home and this is how your life should be."
I often hear Carly Simon singing in my head "These are the good old days". My life isn't perfect and there's plenty for me to fret about, but I have so much to be thankful for. So thinking about that tune keeps me focused on now.
Kylie - thank you for sharing your DH's story. He is remarkable - how fabulous that nature built us with the ability to make our other senses stronger when one doesn't work well anymore. LOVE your furbaby! Oh, I haven't been to Disneyland or Disneyworld. Maybe some day....
Where's Becca?
I'm with Machka when it comes to logging.... sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I think it's good because when I run out of ideas on what to eat, I go back and see what I ate when I was doing well to refresh my memory.
I step on the scale once or twice a month. I mainly depend on how my clothes (jeans) fit to gauge how I'm doing. All of my life I let that scale determine if I was going to be happy or sad, really. I look back at photos of when I was in good shape when I was younger and doing WW faithfully. Half a pound over my goal would send me into months-long eating binges and weight gain. So I got divorced from that thing, lol. I turned my thinking around to where I didn't care if I weighed 500 pounds if I could fit into size 12 or 14 jeans! It was quite freeing. That's what works for me.
It was so warm here yesterday evening that DH didn't build a fire in the woodstove last night so it's about 60 in here right now - which is actually fine except my fingers get cold.
Those of you driving in the snow - be super careful! Margaret, thank you for sharing your scary story! Yikes!
OK better wrap this up. Have a wonderful day gals!
Lanette
SW WA State8 -
Hi ladies,
Rori, I’m thrilled that you are enjoying your retirement and the scale is moving the right way. Did you say “unfortunately” all the snow is gone? Want some of mine?
Caroline, good for you taking the step to try OA. I did the meetings years ago and it did give me insight into my eating. I’m sure you can get through Day 3. Stop by anytime even is you don’t have any “happy things”. That’s what we are hear for.
Barbie, glad to hear your babies are home. Now everything is back to what it was.
Tracey, welcome. I had a lot and I mean A LOT of trial starts. Take it one day at a time and set up your goals. You can do it.
Michele, when I was on my own I started taking day trips. It was like mini vacations. Then my day trips turned into over night trips. Don’t let Vince hold you back.
Kim, I know what you mean about being next to your brother. I want to be cremated and do not want to be next to my sister. I don’t even know what she wants. We don’t talk. Do what you want to do and forget about the savings.
Stacyllott6006, welcome to the group. One week is great. This is a journey not a sprint. Which is good because I hate to exercise. Lol You can do this. We all struggle with food. I think of food is my drug of choice. It’s powerful and can have devastating effects. This group is a compassionate, safe and encouraging place. Remember to be kind to yourself. No one is perfect and there is not perfect way to do this journey. Find what works for you.
((Rye)), sorry your kitty is still sick. I would be worried toCan you take a taxi to the vet?. Check with the vet, they may have an idea for you. I always take my birthday off. Great job with the hula hoop.
Maureli, welcome. Nighttime is where is struggle too. As soon as I walk through the door after work, I want to reach for something. Last night to replace my after work food I immediately changed and did my kettlebell exercises. Seemed to work good. You can also have things you can eat, prepared ahead of time so you can just reach for them. Some of us also brush our teeth when eating for the day is over and that seems to help too.
Machka, have you tried a light silk camisole for under your clothes.
Karen, Allie & anyone else having weather issues. I’ve been bracing for the next storm too. Stay safe.
Looking outside you wouldn’t think this was the first day of Spring. DH b-day tomorrow and he is taking the day off. He will be 58. I’m going to make him a green bean pie. Not a healthy meal but one he enjoys. The woman in our café here as work is going to bake it for me as my oven doesn’t work. We will get anew one as soon as the snow melts and they can deliver one.
Did kettlebells when I got home last night. I think the first time I did them and I was so sore and my legs weak afterwards, I must had done something wrong. Yesterday was easier and I’m not very sore today. Also used a lighter weight which might have helped.
Going out to lunch with a co-worker today. Trying to plan ahead in my mind what I’ll have. That way I’ll go with a plan. Going on-line to see the menu and pick something out before I go. Then I won’t need to even look at the menu. This is day 2 for me getting back on track and I don’t want to screw it up.
Well better get back to work.
Hugs, Terry in VT awaiting the storm9 -
Barbi, love you are home with your pets. Can just imagine the good vibes in your house.
Thinking of Becca and Lee and hope we hear good news today. Had a cool chilly walk with Ella this morning but looks like it will be a sunny day. Spring is in the air. I love it.
Betsy in NW Washington8 -
Dana I love giraffes. Their black tongues are so weird and interesting.
Sharon Love the poppy.
Heather You are having great luck with Freecycle! That is awesome.
Lisa Happy Travels!
Barbara Their loss. You are a wordsmith.
Kylia No wonder you go to your husband rather than him coming to you when he needs something. Now it makes sense. You certainly have your hands full. Your husband, like so many other women here, is really lucky to have you to take care of him.
Terry It is so discouraging how easy it is to gain 10lbs. It's a lot easier than losing 10lbs. Waaaaahhhh!!!~No Fair! LOL!
Janetr Your daughter's photo is definitely a Christmas card.
Kelly Yay! for 3lbs lost!
Yvonne Wow that flooring underneath looks great. You are a handy woman. Was it hard to get that marble up?
And I like Barbara Kingsolver books very much.
Allie Sorry about your snake. My grandkids have Monty the Python and he is a very sweet snake. I never thought I would say that about a snake, but this little guy is lovely.
Rori Hopefully this link won't be removed by admin before you can listen to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLPj6gHTFKI
Barbie Yay! for the pets coming home!
Kim (((Hugs))) Just the other day I was looking at "green urns" for ashes. Biodegradable. So interesting.
Rye Poor kitty cat. xo Good luck with the mystery project.
Disneyland I have been. It is very small, less than 1 square mile. I went as a child, and it seemed huge. When I took my son there, it seemed very small.
Today is cold rain supposedly turning to snow. And I work tonight, darn it. Last night didn't get out of work until almost midnight. Ugh. Not looking forward to the roads coming home. Fortunately I live only 5 miles from work.
