Becca: Congratulations on being home with your DH!!!!! :bigsmile: I'm thrilled for you that surgery went well. Sorry about your sister. I've always felt sorry for myself because I'm an only, but your situation is showing me that some siblings may not be worth the trouble and being an only isn't the worst thing in the world. (((HUGS))) BTW, DH's sister is both a friend & a jewel.
Lisa: You have a good point about expectations being a source of disappointment.
DH had a productive Dr. appointment today and we ended our day with a pleasant time sitting in the sun on our driveway. YAY!!! I curently have no plans for tomorrow. I'll do my best to have some fun.

Becca, I am so glad to hear that you and Lee are home safely. Lisa is right about expectations. Just enjoy the affection of the people that you can count on and don't expect anything from those who aren't there for you.

@deedunbar1, welcome, I too limit sugar and carbs. The easiest way to increase electrolytes is to drink pickle juice or add salt to your food. I am 65 and have dropped 61 lbs, still working on the last 9. I have only recently begun to be consistent with exercise. You can do this.

The easiest way is to salt your food. The main electrolyte is salt. If you want to add a bit more potassium (another electrolyte) into the mix, then use "half salt" ... it goes by different names, but it is a lower sodium salt which replaces a lot of the salt with potassium.
A couple other electrolytes are calcium and magnesium ... you can get supplements for those.
In fact, you can buy complete electrolyte supplements. I go through several electrolyte pills on a long bicycle ride.
If you're exercising, you can also afford to eat salted almonds (a great source of electrolytes) and dried apricots (another great source of electrolytes, except salt). The combination of those two would certainly increase your electrolytes. And as someone else mentioned ... pickle juice.

Hi, I'm new to the group; I've been reading thru the posts, and this sounds like a great group to be in! I'm Moira, nickname Moy, and I live in a suburb north of Seattle. Just turned 65, retired four years ago, long-time divorced, two grown sons (one of whom still lives with me while he completes his college.) I had gastric bypass surgery five years ago, and I'm down 160+ pounds, but I need to lose another 70 pounds before getting body tuck surgery - because all this loose skin ain't gonna disappear on its own. I volunteer as a trip coordinator / driver at my nearby senior center, and love doing so. And I'm saving to purchase land for a Tiny House that I want to get built as my retirement home. (I sold the big house and downsized to a 1200 sq ft condo when I retired, but I want to go smaller.)
We had a seniors trip today, with eleven of us in the van visiting three different bakeries / cafes. I did great (i.e., controlled my buying) up until the last bakery. OMG, what a spread! So I brought home a whole box of different goodies, gah! My son amd I looked them over, and agreed that we'd eat some today, then he would run the rest over to my Mother-Out-Law tomorrow while I take seniors up north to look for snow geese, trumpeter swans, and bald eagles at a nature reserve in the Skagit Valley.
I love all the activity on this thread! Oh, I'm a tracker, I've found it's the best way for me to keep on track with my lifelong health jouney; I track all food and liquids, and exercise too. (I'm an engineering project manager, see my nerd badge?) But it keeps me accountable. And I walk.

Moy welcome to our group, we have several ladies from the Pacific Northwest. I have a sister in the Seattle area that is begging me to come visit. I'm getting closer to convincing my husband to fire up the motor home and head that direction. I'm thinking we could have quite a tea party with our Phat Chat friends in the area
I too had gastric bypass at the age of 63. I lost #125. I'm 68 now and had inched up and inched up to about 25-30 pounds of regain. I decided the first of the year that this was the END of it. I went back to the basics, got out my notebook of information from my surgeon's team, re-read all the diet instructions, nutrition information, etc. and "renewed" my commitment to live a healthy and happy life style. I've lost 21.5 lbs since Jan. 2 and working out regularly, noticing much improvement in the my body shape and more importantly improvement in how I feel in general and my level of energy.
You have found a terrific group of ladies for support and encouragement.

Went to Rummikub tonight. Had 2 small pieces of cheese, some of these chocolate bites (7 of them were only 170 calories) and a small brownie. Only water to drink. Thought I did fairly well. Wish more people would bring veggies. One lady really liked the cheese spinach tarts I brought. Also had some of the cheese spinach tarts that I made

Deedunbar – welcome! Vince drinks the G2 gatorade, it doesn’t have as many calories. No matter what, many many times my carbs are up too. Remember that there are carbs in fruits and veges, too.
Cathy – which brand of pickle juice do you drink? I’ve had it, good for cramps, but in order to swallow it, I need to have a grape or something. I understand that there’s another kind of pickle juice that doesn’t have that same taste. Hope that’s what you have.

So here it is 12:19 am ,and I have had maybe an hour and a half of sleep,I'm exhausted ,but I am up with Faith overnight and have Alfie with me,I also have my furry nephew Buddy ,so this is his house...and Alfie wants to explore,I was smart enough to bring a baby gate so as he won't get out of the bedroom..but oh I can't wait to be back at my own place..6

I'm new here and enjoying reading this thread. My name is Cynthia and I'm from North Idaho. My long term goal is to lose 15 lbs by the middle of August for my son's wedding. I don't normally subscribe to losing weight for a particular event, but it's some motivation I've needed after a disastrous Christmas season of bingeing (mostly because my mother stayed with us for three weeks:) ) and gaining 15 lbs. I'm down 70 lbs over a period of about 10 years. Sugar is my achilles heel, but I've also found that I'm not willing or able to give it up completely like some do.
My goal for the rest of March is to fill out the food diary. I've lost almost nothing the past few weeks eating what has normally been the amount I needed to lose weight at a good pace. That's why I turned to Myfitnesspal. We'll see what happens.9 -

Mama took me to Disneyland in April of 1958, shortly after it opened. It was a very big deal. We stayed in the Disneyland hotel and I even got out of school for a week, but not out of homework and mama was a tough taskmistress. The rides I remember best were the twirling teacups, Tom Sawyer's island, the jungle river boats and walking through Sleeping Beauty's Castle. I was interested in Tomorrowland but don't remember any rides associated with it. Mostly I remember the room (we slept on studio couches, the first I'd seen) and the swimming pool (with picture window to the subterranean bar). Honestly, it was the only vacation NOT going back to Saint Louis and Kansas City (in August!) to visit relatives I remember... until Mama and I took the Train to New York City when I was seventeen. We had a blast!
Caroline, planning is key for me too. Going to OA meeting is a success you can be proud of. So is checking in here. Brava! Adding my activities is my attempt at giving myself some accountability ;}

Hi Sisters, I worked in the office most the day, made vegan pizza for dinner, then took Jock and Major down to the beach for a sunset walk. We had the beach to ourselves. Heaven!

Today I started with a struggle with the spread sheet that my young accountant friend had built for me. (She is not our accountant). I think I have it all figured out and can now input in Google sheets. Once I have that done I will save to a stick and send it to Vancouver along with T4s, etc.
Popped in at my sister's to borrow a couple of things. She seems to be of the opinion that Greysyn has never been involved in anything. He played soccer for 4 years, basketball until his knee couldn't take it, long boarding for about 4 seasons, guitar lessons, etc. I filled her in and she says well, some of that must have been before we moved here. Oh, and golf and martial arts. Yes, you have only been here for 3 years and he is 15 so a lot was before you moved here. She says well, I never heard about it. Hmmmm.....because you didn't ever want to hear about anything that wasn't about you or your daughter? I love her but I don't know if I would hang out if we weren't sisters.
I went shopping for a new shirt with Larry this afternoon. Mark's had nothing neither did Lammlees(western store) and then he was done. He gets frustrated because of the hump from the scoliosis which has also made him become pigeon chested. It is really bad now. Today he was wishing he could wear Tshirts. He won't because he feels the more structured shirts hide more. It really affected his mood. We came home and chose a shirt from the closet that we both liked. Almost a smile.
It was our anniversary today. 36 years. It doesn't even seem possible. As some of you know this has been a very challenging year but we are doing our best to work on things. Larry had saved a gift card from his 65th birthday party so we celebrated at the Keg. We wouldn't have gone there otherwise. A $50.00 gift card didn't quite cut it but at least we only had to put out a few $$$. The dessert was on the Keg so that was great.....well, not for my waist line. Who can turn down a free dessert? We shared.

Also I should confess that I did not resist the Billy Miner Pie. Maybe I already did.
Tomorrow is beauty day. I wish all the appointments weren't all on one day but due to illness and snow days it has worked out that way.

Busy Wednesday ...
Work ... trying to catch up on several things.
Harmony Day Celebration ... I did go to lunch and nibbled at a bit of this and a bit of that, but not much of anything.
Homework ... then I quickly finished off the homework project for my group at uni.
Walk ... 3 km to uni.
Tutorial ... at uni, requiring participation by all 30-40 students in the tutorial, and handed in the homework assignment. Then chatted with my instructor about the first big assignment.
Walk ... 1.7 km to catch bus.
Bus home.
Walk ... 2.8 km to the beach and back with my husband.
Dinner.
And now ... cycling-related projects and possibly also a bit of homework.
I'm ready for bed and it is only 8:30 pm!!
It's been cool and blustery out there since Sunday ...

But I get what you're saying about snow for Easter. Back when I was growing up in Minnesota I was disappointed when the daffodils weren't blooming at Eastertime. Fat chance of that in northern Norway. If they come up before June we count ourselves lucky.
I don't ski much. I did ski for a while but a few years back I lost my balance on a slope while trying to avoid a birch. Doing the splits on skis in deep snow isn't good for your ligaments. :noway: I pulled something and was sidelined with a wobbly knee joint for a good half year. So I tend to restrict my exercising to situations where I feel I'm in full control. Like running on icy roads.

It is snowing. The grands have no school today. Nice that they are old enough to stay home alone. They literally can see the shop from their house, so that is even better. My daughter texted me that she was safely at work
This means I have to drive the truck I don't like with the snow plow on it-yuck. The positive- we have a truck with a snow plow.
Karen in Virginia- I have 3 Hellebore plants. I love them. I need to look and see if I have any blooms. It has been busy around here.
Michele in NC- I love the long hair animals as well, though it tends to be everywhere. When I take Sara to the groomers it is only for bath, nails, and furminator. She doesn't get cut. Pyrenees have a really thick undercoat for winter to keep warm, and a really thin summer coat to protect their skin in the summer. No cutting for her. She isn't cheap though!
Heather UK- I am with you on funeral arrangements! Just have a party with good music, alcohol, and funny stories! I aim for the 10,000 steps because that is what I need to hit my calorie burn most days. I agree that exercise comes in all forms. I had friends tell me that walking in place while working was cheating, really?!? Anything to get my heart rate up works for me. I have been know to dance in public , walk while brushing teeth, do squats while brushing teeth, counter pushups while cooking dinner, etc. I have even done punches and twists in public bathrooms!
Rye- Happy Birthday! I hope kitty is feeling better today. Sara has been having bladder issues. I give her cranberry pills. They seem to help.
Laura- I understand your comment about balance being so fragile. Life is a roller coaster ride. Some days all you can do is hang on and choose whether to laugh or cry. As for fasts, it isn't something I intentionally do. My blood sugar doesn't care for it. I know several folks that do though.
Katla- I hope the DR was able to help DH.
Wendy- I have a friend that is on a strict plant based diet due to a fatty liver. Her DH is also a meat eater. The good thing for her is he will eat anything she cooks. I wish I had more time to cook like she does. Glad it is helping you too. The hike sounds wonderful.
Moy- Welcome! I love the thought of a Tiny house. Our home isn't big, about the size of yours, but we really only use one bedroom/bath, the kitchen, and the man cave. Over half our house is just there. I enjoyed working with seniors at the Alzheimer day center a few years (wow, 20 years) ago. The sad part was poor management put it out of business. Now you have me thinking about the day my mother was on her first senior trip I was like why is my mom out with seniors, then realized she was 65. I laughed for days at myself. Of course that was 10 years ago, and now I am closer to that than not;) I have to track. If I don't I get sloppy. MFP and Fitbit are my favorites. Though I also use my calendar in my bathroom.
If I don't mark meds down I can't remember if I took them! It is a visual that works for me.
I too love to travel, but DH doesn't. He grew up here and we live next door to his mom where they have lived since 1978. Even before loss of sight, he only liked places he already knew. Slowly but surely, I have him going some new places! Even out of the country!
Becca and Barbie- so happy DHs are on the mend and home!
CharlieAnn- I believe in CICO and everything in moderation. You are doing well. Try keeping water in the car as well as easy handle snacks that you prelog- almonds, pistachios, cherry tomatoes, veggie sticks, apple slices, etc. Riding is hard.

Kylia - if walking/jogging in place is cheating, then I cheat every day and I’m closing in on an 80 pound loss. I try to get my walk done first thing in the morning, so that I get it in. I do 5 1/2 miles in front of my TV in my living room. It normally takes me between 56 and 66 minutes.

Of course, walking in place in the living room isn't exercise like going to the gym but nobody pretends that it is. Any movement is better than sitting on the couch. I walk in place, walk the dogs, walk from one end of the house to the other to put things away, do squats and pushups with an extra few moments of time. All of this has contributed my losing weight and keeping it off.
Allie, When I can't sleep, I use the time to read. Then it feels like time well spent, a bonus opportunity to do something I don't have time for during the day. It quiets my mind from thinking about life's challenges and often puts me back to sleep.

The only time I count steps is in October during an annual step challenge at work.
And during those 4 weeks, I've been known to do a lot of pacing in the house!! I also become very inefficient for a month ... pick up one thing, carry to wherever it belong, go back and pick up one thing, carry it to where it belongs. Any other time of year and I pick up a whole pile of things and take them all at once.

CharlieAnn31, congratulations on your 4th day. I’m on my 3rd so right there with you. I have so much respect for hospice nurses. Years ago I was a hospice volunteer and loved it. I hope to someday do it again.
Deedumbar1, welcome to the group. I’m sure this group will have more advice on carbs than I could give you so I will leave it up to the other gals. When I started, I’d take some time and walk through the grocery store reading label. Found some foods that I had never eaten before that I liked. Don’t stress out if you aren’t perfect (no one is) right away. It takes time to find you grove. This is a journey not a sprint. Small steps and deep breaths and you’ll get there.
Becca, Just remember that sometimes what we are asking for from others is something they just can’t give. Take what you get and let the rest go.
Kylia, your DH is too funny. I have two pill boxes. One for morning and one for evening.

Cynthia, welcome. I think a event goal is very motivating. You can do this. I have been making sugar free jello which curbs my sugar cravings. I sometimes will put fat free cool whip on it. sounds like you have made a plan for yourself and filling out the food diary is my must do.
Barbara, green bean pie is really a meat (hamburger) pie with green beans, tomato soup. It is definitely not healthy but here is the recipe in case you want to try it. It is yummy.
Pie Shell:
>2cups flour (sifted)
>¾ cup Crisco
>1 tsp onion salt
>¼ cup cold water
Sift flour before measuring
Cut Crisco into flour
Mix onion salt and water
Sprinkle water on four, one tab at a time
Toss lightly with fork
Work dough into a firm ball
Divide in half and roll out on a floured board or between wax paper
Put one half in bottom of 9” pie pan
Hamburger Pie Filling:
>½ cup chopped onion
>1 can French style green beans (drained)
>1lb hamburger
>1 tab sugar
>1 tsp salt
>Dash of oregano
>¼ tsp pepper
>1 can tomato sour
Brown hamburger and onions
Stir in remaining ingredients and put into pie shell
Place on top shell. Cut slits in top of shell
Bake at 400 for 25 min

I was so tired when I got home yesterday. Bone tired my mom use to call it. My foot really hurt, the dog kept getting under my feet while I was cooking and by back was aching. Felt all of my 63 years yesterday and it brought me to tears. I’m ok today, I think I was just over tired.
I have a2 year checkup appointment with my knee surgeon. I’m going to ask him about my foot. I really think I need a second opinion. I can’t imagine being like this for a year. I get my new orthotics today and hoping that helps.

Today is the painting class. Since I am not on a regular schedule I do have to stop and think what day is it?4 -
Of course, walking in place in the living room isn't exercise like going to the gym but nobody pretends that it is. Any movement is better than sitting on the couch. I walk in place, walk the dogs, walk from one end of the house to the other to put things away, do squats and pushups with an extra few moments of time. All of this has contributed my losing weight and keeping it off.
Allie, When I can't sleep, I use the time to read. Then it feels like time well spent, a bonus opportunity to do something I don't have time for during the day. It quiets my mind from thinking about life's challenges and often puts me back to sleep.

Oh Barbie I would have but very hard to concentrate on readying when you have a barky yappy dog barking constantly... I am blotto and guess who is sleeping on the bed did feed my DFIL and get the dogs out, have to hop in the shower and then stop at the Post Office for a overnight envelope.4
