Hitting your 50s means you’re now the youngest in your age-group. At least that’s how I saw it. Especially when I started placing.
If I had been 50 at my race Saturday, I would have come in with a 2nd AG finish instead of first. There was a bad-*kitten* 51 year old who smoked everyone.5 -

Most of you know I am a published author, well someone read one of my books and in it was a part talking about the hero running through the woods. This woman actually wrote me an email complaining and tell me how unrealistic it was for anyone to run in the woods. She was like "have you ever even tried it? It is impossible!"
So hats off to all our trail runners in this thread. You are doing the impossible!
I just call it Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday.

2 miles before work. 52 degrees felt a little cold in a tank top. Up to 12.25 for the month Now that my weight lifting challenge is over I am switching focus to 4 days of running, 2 lifting and 1 rest.5

@MobyCarp -Thanks for the great recap and pictures. Looks brutal! Big props to all of the runners this year. Almost makes me feel like I cheated last year!
@RunsOnEspresso - Yes, it is very challenging to run in the easy zone when you start the 80/20 plan. but stick with it, you will see your speed increase in no time. It takes some patience, but it was worth it to me.
@kgirlhart -Hope you had a great b-day!5 -

Yesterday's run was a repeat of last Tuesday. Assigned run was 3X 2miles @ 8:20 pace, but I don't feel like I get any real value from that (this plan was set up by a member of my running group) so last week I decided to do 6 miles at a comfortably hard pace, aiming to keep my heart rate below lactate threshold. This week I have been nursing a cold and questioned whether I should attempt the speed workout or not. My resting HR was up 15 beats yesterday morning from the previous day. I took some Tylenol and Dayquil and decided that I would swap my runs around if I felt I needed to and just do the 6 easy miles scheduled for today.
When I got to the bike path, I was thinking that I really wanted to get this run done. I would attempt the increased pace, knowing that I could do the assigned run pretty easily if that was what it came down to. After my one mile warm up, I picked up the pace to around an 8 minute mile. My HR was not increasing as much as I had expected, so I sped up a bit more. Once I got going, I was actually feeling pretty good. When all was said and done, I finished my 6 miles at a 7:45 pace, about 5 seconds faster per mile average than last week. To be fair, it was a lot colder yesterday than last week, but given my expectations for this run, it left me feeling pretty positive.7 -
@lporter229 I love when what feels like a crappy run turns into a really nice one. Males the whole rest of the day better.
@RunsOnEspresso What challenge did you do? I simply must get serious about more strength work.1 -
@lporter229 It seemed easier this morning but I think that was because I was still half asleep. LOL
@fitoverfortymom It was a challenge from the company I bought a few strength training programs from. She runs it once a year in January. I am now trying to decide if I do one of her 12 week programs over a longer period of time or switch to something else for marathon training. I only want to do two days and her plans are 4-5 days of lifting.1 -
4/1 - 4/8 ADK vacation, no running!
4/9 5miles
4/10 7miles
4/11 5miles
4/12 5.6miles
4/13 10miles
4/14 5miles
4/15 rest
4/16 6.5miles
4/17 5miles
4/18 8.89miles
Training plan said to run 7 miles, plus 8 strides. I knew that would take me close to 9 miles so I headed out to First Landing State park to run the trails. It was beautiful and I felt great. I did the "hard" section first where there is a lot more up and down and through sandy/beachy sections. The last 3.5 miles were through the flatter, wider section where I knew my sprints would be easier.
I think I'll head back there Friday morning to do my 11 miles run. I've forgotten how much faster the time goes running through trails
I did misjudge how low to duck under a fallen tree branch and hit my shoulder on it - I have a big purple bruise already. I can't seem to get out of that park without tripping or hurting myself!

Indeed. Given how long she took, she won't be an official finisher; but I bet she gets a medal anyway. She deserves it.
When I saw the weather, I thought it would be interesting to see how it would affect the stats for finishers. It drove the percentage down a little. 2016, sunshine and 60s, 96% finished. 2017, sunshine and 60s, 97% finished. 2018, wind and rain in our faces all day long, only 95.5% finished.
People who make it to the start line at Boston are a tough breed, even among runners. They get there, and only physical inability to continue will keep them from finishing the race.2 -

Thanks @Stoshew71 and @fitoverfortymom!
What an awesome story @bruins_gal91! My husband was telling me about it, but I hadn't read it yet.0 -
Did an easy-ish 2.5 miles this afternoon. I struggled a little bit in the heat (85 today and 65 yesterday!), so the pace was slower than I planned. Tomorrow I’ll do a longer set of walk/jog intervals, and then my first 5k is Saturday morning! I can’t believe it’s almost here.
April goal: 40 miles
Today: 2.5
Total: 23.59 -
Another slow and easy run for me today, and finally I'm starting to feel normal again. However, I know I'm overdue for some rest, so I'll probably give Friday's long run a pass in lieu of something much shorter (or even skip the run entirely) so that I can get some solid rest over the weekend.

Official Marathon PR: 4:11:28
Next Races (more as I find them):
05/06/18 - Pittsburgh Marathon - aiming for sub four hours.
05/12/18 - Glacier Ridge 50k Trail Ultra (I must hate myself)
2020 - Disney World Dopey! (if can raise funds)
Bah. Was planning 10 or so miles but at mile seven I must have stepped wrong cause I felt my knee twist a little. I ran a few more step but it started hurting a little, and I need to do one last long run this weekend, so I decided to stop and hopefully it will get better quickly. Did not bother me to walk on until I got to the stairs. And it is a tiny pain, would have run through it if was not for the timing.
Hopefully will get 10 miles in tomorrow, rest Friday, and long run Saturday - but we will see.5 -
RR is up on the blog. Still not going to post the link.... someone else can if they want to.... Its not that I don't want to share it, I just get annoyed when I get warnings for sharing.4

Thanks! I’m excited/nervous in equal parts. My only goal is to run the whole thing.

For anyone interested in @MNLittleFinn's epic effort, you can find the race report here.10

Braved my first post op run. I ran 15, 1 minute intervals (2.08 miles total). It was..... hard. I couldn't remember how to run and breath, my form was sloppy. I do think I did good on avoiding heal striking like instructed. Hip is grumpy.
I'm starving now...
19.67 miles.16 -
@Elise4270 Yay, that's simply awesome!1
