Braved my first post op run. I ran 15, 1 minute intervals (2.08 miles total). It was..... hard. I couldn't remember how to run and breath, my form was sloppy. I do think I did good on avoiding heal striking like instructed. Hip is grumpy.
I'm starving now...

5 recovery miles! I decided I wanted to make them actually easy and so I tried to keep my HR in zone 3 (below 154 HR) for the entire run. I managed to keep it at zone 3 for 89% of the run, and dipped into zone 4 for only 4% of the run, so I am calling it a success! It was definitely hard to stay in that zone for so long (and my cadence was definitely under my 170 target, boooo) but when I got done, I'd taxed myself so little that it barely felt like I'd run at all. It was really nice!

@MNLittleFinn Epic race report.
@Elise4270 Yay! You ran!
As for me, been fighting cramps and grumpiness the past couple of days, and took a rest day yesterday. Currently dressed in running gear waiting for my kids to fall asleep (because my kids like me to sit with them when they go to bed) and then I will force myself to go out for an easy 4 miles. Then I will come home and work for an hour or two because I have 2 different set-in-stone deadlines on Friday and my in-laws coming to visit at the same time.4 -
0418-2.4k Total-34.1k Goal-80k
Dashed into the gym 20 minutes before closing time and hit the dreadmill. Air quality lately has been *kitten*, so I've been cycling a lot (yes I know that makes no sense... my reasoning is that I have to walk 30 minutes to and from the subway anyway, and my bike commute is only 35 minutes, thus only 5 extra minutes of exposure and a cardio workout to boot, thus win) in addition to lifting, hoping that when it clears up I've still got some semblance of running fitness left.
@Elise4270 Congrats! Sounds like a pretty solid start for great things to come.
@MNLittleFinn Truly inspiring RR.
Wondering if anyone here has experience with Ultra Trail Mount Fuji? The shorter version, Shizuoka to Yamanashi, is about 80k and sounds like a nice stepping stone from the 50k to 100k distance, and it has a reputation of being "runable". Have my sights on it as a mid-term goal, any insight on this?3 -
@noblsheep No insights on that race but hearing about it I think I now want to do some sort of race on a volcano.0

Apparently the 3 year old got a hit of caffeine at some point today. My husband wound up putting him to bed so I could run before it was pitch black out. Run felt nice and easy but fast paced so I was a bit disappointed to see it was one of my slower runs recently despite feeling so effortless. Guessing it's a side effect of the blood donation.

Tuesday was cross-training day, and I counted a 3k bike ride to the store and a 4k hike/walk with my son, but mostly tried to take it easy as Monday's long run has left me feeling really trashed. Yesterday was a rest day, and for some reason my TMJ started acting up for the first time in years. Ugggh. Today I decided to just do a short run to see if it might help relax the tension in my jaw/neck/head, so my little buddy went with me on his bike. He just rode along beside me at an easy pace (instead of making siren noises and blasting ahead of me) and it was very nice. We went about 4-something kilometers, and it was just enough to give me a little energy boost.
Goal for the rest of this week: run just enough that I can get the number of hours of recovery needed (as calculated by my watch) down to around 24 hours. Even if the estimate is way off, I've clearly been cumulating some "recovery debt" lately. The watch counter maxes out at 120 hours, but if your workout the next day requires more than 24 hours of recovery, you don't get anywhere. Anyone else pay attention to those estimates?5 -
4 miles this morning. Set out for 5 but I had bathroom issues and had to head back home. grrrr. This hasn't happened in a couple years and all of sudden two times this week.
@elise4270 - yay!!! Can’t wait to see how you progress!
@sarahthes - When I used to give blood I could barely run for almost a week. But my iron was always on the borderline of giving. I decided I had to stop giving because it just made me too exhausted.
@BruinsGal_91 - what a story. Made me cry again. Boston is just a real tear jerker for me this year!

I didn't manage to get out on Wednesday because it was my mums birthday, so went to see her instead. Made up for it by getting in to the office early and getting a nice 9 miles before work.
I so wish I lived closer to my work, because when your normal commute is 3 hours to the office, it really doesn't leave enough time for a decent run.5 -

I wish you lived closer to work too. Yikes! Horrible drive time.1 -
Been AWOL due to Work/Life. Had this dropped to my FB by a well meaning friend.
Some of you may have already seen it but I think it's appropriate to pass onto my MFP Running Friends considering the recent hard race events by so many, whether on road or trail.
To mention a few @MobyCarp for Boston Cold-wet
@7lenny7 and @MNLittleFinn for Zumbro mudder
@JessicaMcB for Snowmagedden races
@sarahthes for her first HM in less than ideal conditions ( one lady said never again to me, she's already signed up for another one - her husband hasn't told her yet )

@MNLittleFinn It's official. If anyone tells you how tough Boston 2018 was, you *have* to tell them about Zumbro. There. is. no. comparison.6

@HonuNui @sarahthes Volcanoes are my happy place. Haleakala is magical to me. And I would live at Volcanoes National Park if I could. I really wanted to hike to the lava flow the last two times we were on Hawaii but the hubs said no. There is something so beautiful about them and how powerful they are.

I stuck around my neighborhood last night trying to get it done before the pending thunderstorms arrived. Stella and I did a little 1.7 mile run then I went back out for 5. Got a bit wet, but the heavy stuff the weather folks had been expecting never did happen. With all of the nasty race conditions folks have had to endure lately, I am expecting the worst on race day. I have had my share of practice in gross conditions these last few months, but I don't think you can ever be too prepared, so I was kind of hoping to get caught in a downpour. Kind of.
Tonight I have 10 miles scheduled then tomorrow we head to Charleston for the weekend. I am looking to do two ten mile runs while we are there on Saturday and Sunday. I am just hoping I can find time to fit them in since we will be on a schedule for a music festival. I know tomorrow I will be skipping my cross training due to travel. Marathon is just under 3 weeks away, so I guess anything I miss from here on out just adds to my rest and recovery.5 -
I'm trying to play catch-up on this thread but find it hard to make headway. I'm up to page 48! I think I'm going to break up my RR into three parts or I'll never get started on it.
@garygse fantastic race, man! An 11 minute improvement of an 11 minute improvement is phenomenal!! And doing that after coming back from your injury is amazing! I'm super stoked for your! You certainly did reach high that day.
@PastorVincent sorry to hear about your long run, but getting 21 miles before walking sounds pretty good. You'll get it sorted it out before race day, I'm sure. Have ever weighed yourself before and after a long run to get a sense of how much water you loose per hour? It will vary with temperature, to be sure, but if you do that at various temps you can figure out how much water you've lost.
@HonuNui you can bet Kody & I hung out when I got back. I couldn't take him for a run Saturday but he got to play in the snow while I ran the snow blower to clear out the driveway...still in my running tights and shoes. Damn that hurt!
@mobycarp I haven't read your RR yet, but I did see the photos you posted and looked like a miserable day weather-wise, but damn man you did great (I peaked ahead to the end). I look forward to reading the whole thing as I get caught up.
@fitoverfortymom I love, love, loved your RR!!! An AG first place on your first trail race?!?!? Your a natural. I trust we'll see more trail race reports in your future? Wonderful performance. So much of trail running is mindset and attitude and you clearly have that in your favor. You are definitely no imposter!
@jine1989 you're doing great! Running when you don't feel you want to shows great self discipline. When the weather gets warmer and more humid, I find that I often need to slow down to keep my level of effort where I want it. Quite often, going slower means you can go longer, which will help you out in the long run.
@NikolaosKey Congrats on signing up for the 46k! You are going to have so much fun with that! As I told @fitoverfortymom above, so much of trail running and ultra trail running is attitude, and that will be your strength in the race.
@kevaasen you've had a great training cycle, looking forward to hearing about your marathon.
@Duck_Puddle & @Orphia one of my friends volunteering at Zumbro was wearing a stocking cap which said "SISU". I won't say it's a common word here but you hear it. There's even a CrossFit franchise here called Sisu.
@cburke8909 you probably mentioned it already, but where are you vacationing?2 -
For anyone interested in @MNLittleFinn's epic effort, you can find the race report here.
Epic indeed. Over the years there have been some truly amazing accomplishments from some truly amazing runners in this group, but I think this one inspires me the most. Thanks @MNLittleFinn for being such an inspiration to us all.0 -

I grew up able to see Mt Baker from any local high point. Just before we got married my husband and I went on a road trip to Mount St Helens and Crater Lake and close enough to see Mt Shasta off in the distance. It was wonderful...
@juliet3455 I am seriously considering switching my Edmonton Marathon 10K to the Half. And I have longer term Goals that I have only mentioned to a few people involving Fall 2019 and 42.2... plus my new goal to run a half marathon in every province & territory... Gah.
Got greeted by a goose when we got to work today so my husband made the below meme.

If I inspire people, that's cool. I tend to think of myself like Forrest Gump.... I just felt like running.... Glad people are enjoying my RR. I write them to help me sort out my own thoughts, but figure sharing might entertain or help others, so it's an added bonus that way.2 -
Sunday was a sore day, mostly in my right quad, but I felt surprisingly pretty good. I was tempted to go for a run in the beautiful snow but then decided that would be stupid. Kody & I played in the snow instead. My son was supposed to be confirmed Sunday but my wife was in KC and her flight to Minneaplis was canceled due to weather. Sunday they were going to fly her from KC > Atlanta > Milwaukee > Mpls but after she got to Atlanta she found out the flight to Milwaukee was canceled. She would have been better off staying in KC where she could have stayed with friends. She finally made it home Monday night. We're going to have to reschedule Confirmation for another day.
Monday was one last recovery day. Finally got out running again Tuesday. Did a quick 6 miles with Kody. I felt pretty rough for a mile, particularly my right quad, but in time everything started feeling good and I was able to pick up the pace and even managed a couple of sub 9:00 miles. For you OCD folks, you'll be happy to hear that when I arrived at my driveway with 5.96 on my Garmin, I continued past my house and ended up with 6.00 exactly.
I'm heading out again tonight for 10.

My IT band is no bueno at the moment. Contemplating a doctor visit and/or just calling my PT. My PT hasn't seen me since I was 100+ lbs overweight, so that will be interesting. I think I need some rubbing. Also, this is the constant reminder that I'm not a spring chicken and I need to not neglect strength training. Hubby and I are looking into a private gym/family personal trainer to get us started more seriously on strength goals. Pretty excited about that.
In non-running news, I'm moving to a new job at the same company when I get back from Mexico (so like three weeks from now) and hubby got a raise at his job, too. Both mean more money for running shoes and entry fees!
Weather is supposed to be crap Friday/Saturday, but depending on the IT band, I'll put some easy miles in tomorrow and maybe a long run on Saturday (10 miles?). I'm not so sure about this recovery stuff, so I'm just kind of trying to listen to my body, especially since I don't know what I'm running toward next.
