April 2018 Monthly Running Challenge

I'm terribly behind on this thread - I know, I was warned! I aim to do better in May!
Mileage wise, I fell short by about 3 kilometers. However, I accomplished my goal of running five kilometers continuously for the first time in my entire life! I'm so happy. Today's 3 km run was slow, easy, and FUN. I had no real agenda for the first time ever and that was nice.

@MobyCarp congrats on the James Joyce Ramble. One of my work colleagues ran it and won her age-group in the Open 10k (she's very fast).
Earlier this month I was toying with entering, and then forgot all about it. I live fairly close to Dedham and have been to a couple of meetings at the Endicott Estate, so I know the area quite well. As it happens, it was a good job I didn't enter because I managed to twang a muscle in my calf at my parkrun on Saturday and was limping a little the next day. Nothing major and it feels much better today, but still a wee bit sore. I was planning on a long run tonight, but I'm going to take it easy for a few days I think. I've got my half marathon coming up on May 19th and I don't want to do anything stupid to jeopardize it.
I was hoping to try for a new PB in my half, but I'm now thinking maybe I'll just relax and enjoy the scenery instead.

@MobyCarp - You're amazing! For real.
@ElfRunnerQt - That is some huge mileage without a race goal to push you. Good for you! I agree with @Scott6255 that races are fun, but if what you're doing is working for you...go with it!
@kristinegift - I love relay runs!

Final run of the month was the usual Monday night with my running club.
I didn’t hit my goal for the month but that’s ok. This is the very first month I’ve ever run consistently so I’m really happy with that. My goal going forward is to gradually up my distance ready for my 7k race in July.

To run or not run? I've been having pain behind my knee that radiates down my leg. It kind of makes my foot feel like it's asleep. I'm running a 5k this Thursday, so I don't want to injure it by running more early this week. I haven't actually run since last Wednesday, so I don't think that it's from running. What do you all think?0
-
@zerlinna87 if it were me, I wouldn't run today with that kind of pain. Hopefully it will subside by Thursday. Not running since last Wednesday won't hurt you very much for your 5K. Can you do some cross training that doesn't hurt your knee?2
-
@MobyCarp great pictures, and smart move on not trying to pr that race.0

I finished off the month with a nice 5.6 km on the treadmill, which really helped with muscle tightness/soreness in my calves. Very refreshing workout! I have now a grand total of 146.9 for the month, 46.9 over goal. Thinking for the month of May I will stick with the 100 km goal again because of my schedule and raise it to 150 in June.
Great job hitting your goals, everyone!4 -

That sounds a lot like the first stages of my Baker's cyst. Yours could be something completely different, but on the chance that it might be the same thing, if I were you I would get it looked at soon. I'm out for at least two months and would have been okay if I had gotten it seen to.2 -
Made goal on Saturday (first time this year I think!) and wrapped up the month today with a short run. My legs were still sore from last week even with the 'rest' day yesterday. I did run around a bit on the beach with Hobbes the Vizsla and friends but felt fine there. Today my right hamstring was not happy and the further I went the more it and other parts (ankle, toes, calf) started bothering me. I am sure I was overcompensating and my form suffered. I was wearing an older pair of NB v730's that I haven't worn for a while and I think they may have also been part of the problem. They don't have many miles on them but I think I must have stopped wearing them because they caused me issues.
@AlphaHowls - way to go with your first marathon! Congratulations!!
@ddmom0811 - Congratulations to your daughter on her Big Sur finish! It is a heck of a tough course and she should be very proud!
@midwesterner85 - Happy Birthday!
@kristinegift - that relay sounds like so much fun! Great job!!
@girlinahat - your pictures are great! Love the outfits Also what a awesome job on climbing up a mountain on your run! Such a great adventure!
@polskagirl01 - hope your throat feels better soon!
@7lenny7 - love where you get to run!
@MobyCarp - the James Joyce Ramble sounds so fun! I am glad you had a good race and didn't push it!
To anyone who raced this weekend that I missed - Congratulations!!

So, even with my shins and other things acting out this past month. I managed 157.01 of my 200 miles. I managed to run a timed marathon and no injury....just really sore.
The Marathon was wall to wall people and runners everywhere! Quite honestly, I did not enjoy the constant having to adjust and get around others (particularly people who just stop in front of you or run while playing with cell phones). It eased up once the 1/2 marathon separated from the marathon and I had more space then. It was still a great experience, but one I really do not have a need to repeat. I will continue with my local 1/2 marathons. I did tell the SO that if he ever gets his act together with diet/exercise and wants to run one, I would do it with him.
Not a great detailed race report, but some highlights.
*There were a few times I had to think "left, right, left, right" and it made me smile and think of you all.
*There was a good bit of "don't stop" going on in my head as I was very tense by mile 17 and had to keep trying to get my shoulders to relax. Many runners would walk run and I did not want to walk, I wanted to keep my pace and say I ran the whole way. I did have one potty break midway.
*In process of losing another toenail as I could feel the pain/blister starting about mile 20 or so. It was a lot of blur in my brain as I had to concentrate a good bit to keep from getting tangled with other runners.
*I trained with GU, but realized I really needed more, so took a chance and took the banana, oranges and lemon/lime gatorade that was offered along the way. I did not try the SIS. I do not like lemon/lime gatorade, but it got me through.
*I got to see two Elvis impersonators running and I did beat a banana in the marathon. I have now seen a banana sprint... The costume looked hot and I do not know if the banana made it all the way.
*I have never been so sore (DOMS) in my life. The day after was mostly my muscles protesting what I had done. I still am very tired. It surprised me because I have done the distance, but the stress and volume of people really changed the experience.
So much "thank you" to all of you! I have learned so much being a part of this group! Thank you for all the insight, experience, and cheer!11 -
Addendum to today's notes: Saw someone on another thread say their marathon "in September" was Wineglass. I had thought Wineglass was in October; went and looked, and this year it's September 30. And the price goes up tomorrow.
From runners' chatter, I knew hotels could be an issue. Found one about 5 miles from the finish line, looked at the parking and transportation info, booked the hotel, and registered for the marathon. For a variety of reasons, September 30 (Wineglass) is a better date for me to run a second marathon this year than September 23 (Rochester) would be. And Wineglass is reported to be beautiful, reasonably easy marathon course. I like the Rochester course, but it's geographically more challenging that Boston. Since the idea is to see whether Boston + New York would be too much in the same year, a flatter marathon than Rochester would be appropriate for the fall. (Yes, I know Wineglass is net downhill; but it's gentle.)
Rest days are dangerous. That's when it's really, really tempting to sign up for more races.7 -
Pretty good month for me. Ran 11 days. Also swam and cycled. Hoping for more in May.2

That was actually one of the things that came up when I googled my symptoms. What are they doing for treatment?0 -

Finished off the month with a 3.3km walk. Would have gone longer but got sidetracked most of the day with plumbing problems at my parents house... Unfortunately it's still not fixed and might take a lot of work to fix it. This brings me to 40km right on goal for the first time. See ya in May!4
-
I think I ended with like 13 miles of running this month. HAH. Next month I get serious again.
Last 7 days: 101, 083 steps and 279 flights of stairs. I couldn't tell you how many trails but the longest was the Narrows. We tried to stick to the shorter (2ish miles or less) to see more of each park.5 -
Finished the month with a pretty fast (for me anyway - 7:53/mi.) 5 mile run. Was especially hard in the heat and 20mph wind.
Ended April with 111 miles.
Good job everybody. Most people I have seen over achieved their mileage, and the ones that fell short, still made great progress. Everyone should be proud.4 -

It might have been something I posted about Wineglass. My in-laws have been begging me for a couple of years to run it (they are from Corning), so that plus net downhill was encouraging for my first full!1 -

If I had family in Corning I could stay with, I'd probably have run it before now. Everyone I know who had done it speaks well of the course, and one of my buddies turned in a BQ at Wineglass in the first marathon he ran. And again in the second marathon he ran, because it rolled around again before his first Boston.1 -

Finished up the month, and got back to business after a lot of rest last week, with group speedwork tonight. The workout was short intervals. 60-90-30 seconds with 90 sec recovery in between. Repeat x 3 plus 4 sprints.
Met my goal of 90 miles for the month. I will have to do some calculating and set my May goal
@AlphaHowls congrats on surviving your marathon! Great job. Take care of those sore muscles.
@MobyCarp congrats on the James Joyce ramble. I ran the Wineglass Half last year and it was a nice event. I am tempted to sign up again but not sure if it's good timing or not 4 weeks out from my first marathon. And I'm already about to sign up for another race that has a price increase tomorrow too. Curse those price increases!
Congrats to the rest of the racers if I missed anyone. Sounds like a great weekend all around!
See you in the May thread.

Big Hairy Audacious Goal: Sub 4 hours in Pittsburgh 2018!
Official Marathon PR: 4:11:28
Next Races (more as I find them):
05/06/18 - Pittsburgh Marathon - aiming for sub four hours.
05/12/18 - Glacier Ridge 50k Trail Ultra (I must hate myself)
2020 - Disney World Dopey! (if can raise funds)
Guys tapering is hard. I was thinking I would just lap around the park real easy... and umm, 8 miles later I forced myself to stop and walk home. heh.10 -
I didn’t make my goal, but had a really nice run tonight. The trail by my daughter’s soccer practice fields were clear of snow and dry. It was so nice to be out on the trails. Passed by a pond and never heard so many bull frogs, it was pretty cool.
