Aspartame is broken down as protein I do believe, thus, one calorie. I will drink 4-5 a day. LOL0

Coke Zero is the king of the colas, but Diet Wild Cherry Pepsi is the king of the cherry colas. I also tried the Zesty Blood Orange and the Twisted Cherry new Diet Cokes, but they were disappointing.1

Coke Zero Cherry Coke Zero Vanilla Coke Zero
The Cherry and the Vanilla versions are like trying to find a unicorn though in my area.
In a pinch, Pepsi Zero is a reasonable substitute for Coke Zero, though not quite as good.1 -

yup this all the way ... Coke zero was my go to cola of choice until Pepsi released the ginger one2 -
Coke Zero has been discontinued in Australia (you can still get it until stocks run out) and replace with "Coke No Sugar" which tastes a bit different -- in my opinion it tastes better but people are whinging online2

Coke Zero came out because Diet Coke/Coke Light doesn't taste like Coca-Cola. And people who like the sensation of chewing on sugary aluminum foil complained to Corporate.
Yeah, I'm a Pepsi/Mt Dew/Diet Coke drinker. Coca Cola is nasty.2 -
I really don't like the taste of Coke Zero (or Coke). I love the taste of Diet Coke but less and less places here are stocking it now.
Oh well I just have to drink beer I guess. I'm pretty sure that's zero calories too. 1 -

Aspartame breaks down as Methanol, Methanol then breaks into Formaldehyde. This happens with a ton of other stuff, including natural foods, such as bananas or tomatoes.
I would, however, be more worried about the correlation between "Zero Calorie" sodas and weight gain. That's the hidden trick.17 -
why would anyone be worried about this correlation, when correlation does not equal causation????8

if someone is gaining weight its from too many calories not the diet or zero calorie sodas.I drink a lot of it at times and have no issues with weight gain. you dont gain weight from water(except water weight) so why would you gain weight on zero calorie sodas?5 -

That's the difficult part of the argument. A linear discussion of Calories in vs Calories out is never accurate. if it were, there would not be plateaus.
The weight gain is not related to the calories in Diet Soda, mainly because there aren't any or very few.
There is however, a strong correlation:
In 2016, The Journal JAMA Pediatrics found that pregnant women who consumed Diet Sodas during pregnancy were 2 times more likely to have babies who were overweight or obese by their first birthdays.
In 2015, the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that people who drank diet soda gained almost triple the abdominal fat over nine years as those who didn’t drink diet soda. People who didn’t drink diet soda gained about 0.8 in., Ocasional diet soda drinkers gained 1.8in. and daily drinkers gained in average 3.2 inches.
The Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio collected height, weight, waist circumference and diet soda intake data every 3.6 years from 474 people aged 65-74. The waists of those who drank diet soft drinks grew 70 percent more than those who did not drink it
Non-caloric artificial sweeteners were found and verified by peer review to affect the production of Leptin by altering the gut bacteria in mice. This study was published in the International Journal of Science.
Leptin is the hormone that regulates appetite.
In Journal article: “A Role for Sweet Taste: Calorie Predictive Relations in Energy Regulation by Rats,” Susan E. Swithers, PhD and Terry L. Davidson, PhD, Purdue University; Behavioral Neuroscience, Vol. 122, No. 1. Presented at the American Diabetes Association meeting in San Diego, the relationship between aspartame and fasting glucose and insulin levels found that mice fed the aspartame diet had higher blood glucose levels than the control group. This suggests that artificial sweeteners can indeed raise blood sugar levels, stimulate insulin secretion, alter the pH in the gut (killing beneficial bacteria), and cause the brain to think your body is hungry.
Now, the mice studies don't necessarily reflect humans, especially because the amounts given to the rats are very high in comparison to normal human consumption.
There is, however; a strong body of evidence that suggest the same effect in humans, especially humans who are prone to or already overweight.
So again, while diet sodas can be a good escape from sugar based sodas, in the long term, they seem to have a very adverse effect.25 -
@tlpina82 I would respectfully disagree that the studies you reference show a "strong correlation" or that "they seem to have a very adverse effect". Because the thing with correlation is that you don't know which way the correlation goes. Does diet soda cause weight gain or do overweight people switch to diet soda? Is it possible overweight people switch to diet soda because it seems like an easy way to save calories, but then never change anything else so they just keep gaining weight? Is it possible people who drink diet soda feel like they now have some wiggle room since they saved some calories and so subconsciously eat a little more?
Also, if artificial sweeteners raise blood sugar levels and therefore stimulate insulin production, why have the thousands and thousands of diabetics who routinely test their blood glucose levels multiple times a day not reported the fact that the diet soda the ADA suggests they drink is actually causing blood sugar to rise?
The problem with the studies done on humans is that it is literally impossible to control all the other variables than the one you are testing. There are some people who have been drinking diet soda since they were children, others who switch to it for any number of reasons at different points in their lives. Often, people switch to artificial sweeteners thinking that's all they need to do. Other times people switch to diet soda while making full lifestyle changes. What other psychological, diet, and exercise changes did those pregnant women and elderly people make? Is it possible those other factors, which perhaps are correlated with choosing diet soda, actually caused the negative weight result? No way to tell.
The fact is, there is no biological or chemical reason currently known as to how or why artificial sweeteners could actually cause weight gain, and there are myriad confounding uncontrolled variables that make population studies like the ones you cited useless. And there are tons of people here who are carefully tracking their calories, drinking diet soda and putting artificial sweetener in their tea and coffee, and losing weight exactly as expected.
Everyone loves a good bogey man, so the idea that artificial sweeteners are some kind of a problem will most likely continue. They are some of, if not the, most studied food additives in history, in wide use for decades, with no definitive proof of any actual negatives.23 -

There's a correlation between smoking and cancer, but not all people that smoke develop the condition. Would you rather not know about it?
We can't pick and choose. There's a ton of data that shows the long term adverse effects of drinking diet soda.
I'm not saying "don't drink it", just saying "Hey, people who drink it daily, seem to have this particular adverse effect".19 -

There's a proven causative relationship between smoking and cancer. It increases your risk.

Coke/Coke zero/Diet coke all taste the same to me. I don't think I could even tell the difference between Pepsi and Coke if you held a gun to my head.
Apart from Diet coke with Mango, because that stuff is vile.0
Whenever I go to places that have cherry and vanilla flavorings to put in your soda I put in a little bit of both to coke zero and it's amazing!
