I am in the beginning stages of becoming a runner (you know that fun stage where you run for 30 seconds then walk for 30 more but I will slowly and surly work my way up...have no choice because I already signed up for the St Judes Half in December So lets begin:
July 11: Alternating 30 seconds of walk/run for 12 minutes (fitbit) deleted my log so I don't know the exact distance
Welcome! Some of us may post numbers that look intimidating; just remember we all came from humble beginning. When I set out to become a runner, I was compelled to slow to a walk after 60 seconds. Might have been wiser to do 30 second intervals, but I wasn't that smart.
Keep it up, and you can run a 5K. Then a 10K. Then a half marathon. Then you can decide whether you even want to go the marathon distance. But for now, focus on exactly what you're focused on: Gradual, steady improvement.9 -

It was an odd morning. I started out as usual and traffic was heavy. Then I see an ambulance drive past, no lights or siren which is weird since I was in a residential area. Not really a place you see ambulances unless answering a call. So I watched and the ambulance, the car in front and behind it continued into the dead end, turned around and parked. No one got out.
Then I am running down a main street. There's a lot of traffic today, more than most mornings. It was loud and I couldn't hear my podcast. I wear only my left ear bud so my right ear is to the street and no bud to hear traffic. I was hearing something over the traffic that I was trying to figure out if it was screaming or music. Then I hear tires squeal and look over to the apartment complex across the street. A white car is trying to make a fast turn around and someone is at the back end hitting it and screaming. The white car squeals out of the parking lot and steps on it. I picked up the pace because I wanted to be no where near the person screaming and hitting cars.
I changed my route to stick to the road because I was like this is too weird. I'm glad I did because as I was running past the front of a new home construction they were banging on windows. Not sure what exactly they were doing but the noise startled me. I looked over and they had lights and cranes and I could see workers so it wasn't like people in there stealing or trashing. Had I ran through the back way I normally go I would have been right by the house and probably screamed because of how on edge I was at that point.
Needless to say my heart rate was super high despite how much I tried to slow down. I wasn't as fast or far as I'd have liked but it was such a weird morning that I'm chalking it up to that.
Wow... what an exciting morning! The only thing I encountered today was large loose dog that helped me find my runner's high.6 -

I got a 5" with birds, the long pocket jogger and the long roga. The 5" and joggers said compression but they didn't feel very compression-y when I tried them on. If not they will be for short runs.
I have spent a ridiculous amount of money this summer trying to find shorts that work. I am in despair. I have these Champion capris I love--they have a nice deep pocket on both sides and are compression-y without feeling tight at all anywhere. I want them to be shorts, but they are not shorts. My next step is to buy some more and *make* them shorts, but I am not a talented seamstress so I fear the results...the short equivalent of trimming my own bangs.
I want compression bermudas, lol, with lots of pockets. Don't the running fashion gods know that there are chubby women in their 40s who *also* like to run in the summertime?
Anyway. I took my chubby behind out for a 3-miler in this stupid skirt thingy with shorts underneath this morning. I will say that it's a cute skirt with pockets, just prone to thigh-rub, which is the worst.

@5BeautifulDays Old Navy has some that I like. I think they are 8". My favorites are Nike Dri Fit but I can't find them anywhere now. I'd never be able to sew a pair. I can do buttons and not that well.. Lol
Pockets are even harder to find! The oiselle ones have pockets. Haven't tested them out yet.1 -
@katiebug3268 - Welcome. I have ran the half marathon for St Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend 4 times. This year I am running the 10K - mainly because there are some bucket list races I want to do in my home state that I can't do while training for a half marathon.
I am concerned that you are a new to running and are attempting a half six months out - but people have done it before. St Jude half course is a little hilly but very manageable. I also know plenty of people that walk the half.
I think @katiebug3268 can do it! I started running in 2011... on April 25 of that year I squeezed out my very first mile in a cotton t-shirt, gray Russell sweats and Reebok cross-trainers. I got educated in a hurry about running clothes and especially shoes. Chafed nipples and blistered feet are harsh teachers. I ran my first half five months later totally clueless and without a training program. @katiebug3268 appears to be on a quicker learning curve...lol4 -
Under a heat advisory again - planned to get up early and run the neighborhood before dawn but didn't manage it. Ran anyway, slowly, in the heat and humidity along the river.
Trying to get some longer runs in, did 5 miles, half on asphalt and half on trails. Did not see any snakes but did almost step on a striped lizard. My legs were tired from lifting yesterday but I feel like my conditioning is getting better in the heat - I was breathing easy the whole way.
The police were out in their golf cart making sure no one got heat stroke again today, and my husband took advantage of their cooler since his water bottle had gotten hot. They had ice cold Powerade as well as water! Pretty keen. And necessary, since I drank a 10 ounce bottle (of water, can't do sugar) while running, a 32 oz bottle afterwards, and when I weighed myself at home I had lost three pounds since when I woke up this morning! That's down three pounds with breakfast and a big orange in my stomach. On a related note, my husband had chaffed nipples for the first time, presumably due to all the salty sweat.

Morning all!
Woo hoo rest day! I needed it. I did a total body strength workout last night thats kicked my *kitten* (and arms, shoulders, chest etc) so I'll go for a walk at lunch with plenty of stretches, and some yoga tonight before bed.
I'm just glad that 2 weeks in I'm enjoying it, not dreading it. I'm glad for a rest day but also am looking forward to getting out tomorrow morning!
I've entered a competition that will give me new shoes, running gear and some training as well as an entry to a half marathon in September. I REALLY want to be chosen (they pick 3) and I find out tomorrow morning. but it means I'll be doing the half in Sept, not November. 😂😒😓😱
@5BeautifulDays I'm too afraid to get shorts, I fear thigh chafe... I wouldn't call myself chubby anymore but still have plenty of meat on my bones so to speak. Are shorts worth it in summer? It's winter here atm so am glad for my knee length capris!4 -

Skirt Sports makes a skirt with compression shorts built in that actually don't ride up. I've tried other brands but Skirt Sports are the only ones that stay down over my thighs.
Gypsy Runner makes great compression capris and longer shorts with deep pockets. She has all kinds of funky prints.
1 -
I like the shorts sold by Gypsy Runner. She only ships in the United States.1
-
@5BeautifulDays I nab my running shorts from Academy sports and outdoors. Their store brand(can't remember the name off the top of my head) comes in 5 and 7in. The 5in have a single zipper pocket, the 7in have 2 regularly cut side pockets. they are dri fit but not compression.
@katiebug3268 You can do it! As many others have stated, just getting out there is the first step, and we have all had to take it.0 -

I wear shorts 90% of my runs. I have chicken legs and they still rub. I swear its a gait, female, or hip strength thing. So i use body glide. ETA (I'm 5'5" 122) I wear Oiselle shorts.
Its so hot, I'm hoping to find some running "panties" lol! Jk! I have some super loose long distance shorts (BOA) that are like running naked. They are awesome!1 -

I was nervous switching from capris to shorts for the same reason so I started with longer fitted/compression shorts. Right now I'm running in these, which I have in 3", 5", and 7" styles. The 3" sometimes give me a little chafing problems and the 7" are a little too long when it's hot, but the 5" are just about right. My plan is to replace them with similar higher quality shorts at some point, but for now they work great.
ETA: For reference, I'm 5'2", 160-ish lbs.0 -
I am so over this day. Too many whiny clients, fickle judges and stupid phone calls. Does running out of fvcks count toward my monthly miles?13

I looked at Oiselle, but I'm still a little too big for their biggest size. By next summer.rheddmobile wrote: »Skirt Sports makes a skirt with compression shorts built in that actually don't ride up. I've tried other brands but Skirt Sports are the only ones that stay down over my thighs.

I just went to Gypsy Runner and bought a pair! Thanks for the hint! I love that it has two pockets.workaholic_nurse wrote: »@5BeautifulDays I nab my running shorts from Academy sports and outdoors. Compression only, for me--I must control the jiggle! That said, I've never shopped at Academy sports, but I can see they could be a great resource for my 13 year old cheerleader. That girl burns through active wear like you wouldn't believe.
ETA: I hadn't thought about gait being part of the issue with shorts, @Elise4270 , but that makes sense.
@MegaMooseEsq I'll have to try those when I get a little smaller. I'm 5'5"and currently weigh about 1.6 Elise4270s

@MegaMooseEsq interesting. Come summer I will have to try shorts, Ill get a couple of different types and see what happens. ATM capris are great mostly. Sadly I'm between sizes and my current ones are a bit loose in the crotch so I get a little rub right in the inner crease - I will have to use Vaseline on my long runs. anything under about 8-9k I'm ok. But the next size down are too tight across the waist band.
I also get the jiggles, so prefer something firmer, thought I find on my longer runs I have to have the waist band across my hips and just under my tummy because otherwise its too firm and I feel nauseated and cant breathe properly. I'm now just used to my tummy jiggling. its annoying!! oh and I'm 5'3" and i think 150lb.
oh random question - I have not yet used Vaseline. tips? Should I get body glide instead or is Vaseline ok? its just for my inside groin where I get a bit of chafe...0 -

Oh yes! I have one of these as well! ETA I have the Skirt Sports not Gypsy Runner.1 -

I just ordered the smaller Wunjo X2/Race vest as I wanted something light and economical and this fits the bill.
If anyone else is interested, WUNJOWOMAN18 is a working 18% discount code I found. Helps offsets the $10 in shipping cost since my order was less than $100 (free shipping if you hit that target).
received shipment yesterday, so one week shipping from Norway - not to bad. Looking forward to testing soon once my knee is recovered. Super light and based on quick fitting, like how it feels.
Cool. My X5 came last week and I ran in it twice. I am not ready to give a full review, but I can say it did not kill me and that is my very first line a product must cross.
Do not remember if I posted a picture, so here:
Thanks for the photo - I like how you swoop the water line over. Last night when trying it on, I noticed it was super long and was debating how to minimize length or minimize bounce - so this looks to be a good way to position it.0 -
I hadn't realized until I started looking into the various options people have been posting how rare the 5" inseam length is - I might have to stick with the cheap Chinese brand until I save up enough for the Oiselles - those pocket jogger shorts look pretty nice, but $60 for shorts is a no-go right now.3

Seriously, one of the best things about losing weight was being able to wear shorts!! After a lifetime of being told they were unflattering and battling the inner thigh ride up I still won’t wear them for anything other than running, but for running I love my Lululemon’s with the built in knickers - it’s a bit weird at first because you almost feel naked. But lovely and cool.2

For your husband...
1) Make sure he is wearing technical running clothes AND NEVER EVER COTTON. Under Armour Heat Gear, Nike Dry Fit, and so on. There are several good brands out there. They make a big difference.
2) Go to your local running or sporting goods store and ask for a product called BODY GLIDE. It looks like stick deodorant comes in a blue container. Have him liberally apply that to his nipples. You can use vaseline too, but it stains clothing and etc. I use Body Glide ANY place that might rub.
3) Have him consider a compression top. IME, the compression tops do not move around and since they do not move, they do not rub. I wear compression shorts for the same reason. Keeps things from moving around.
Have him do at least 1&2 before he really regrets it. Bloody nipples are not uncommon but are definitely not pleasant.5 -

I got the idea from @JessicaMcB posts of her pictures wearing hers. I have seen others tuck it behind the straps heading straight down too. I am undecided which way is best yet.0 -
So much to read and not enough time to respond!!
I am glad to know I am not the only one who doesn't stay upright all the time!
I am also slow, but if I m improving, I am good with it!
I want to wear shorts, but struggle to find ones that work as well. After having lost 110 pounds there's loose skin to hold in place, ya know? Mostly, I wear leggings. Always compression because of the skin. I will look at some you all have mentioned.3 -

Mine came with a longer hose than needed and a note to cut it to desired length.0 -
I also have two pair (and a 3rd on the way) of these https://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=1031044&pcid=1031032&vid=1&pid=203111002 They are 8" and only $18 right now. I actually really like Old Navy's activewear. It's cheap and works well!
I wear the 3" at home when I lift weights. I wore them once when running and all I could think was "my butt is hanging out... this is so obscene. I am probably scaring children"3 -
No run tonight. We’ve had several clients lately who have self-injured (3 today, plus quite a few the last few weeks), so I worked 2 hours over to try to get everyone in crisis units or observation cells. I also had 2 staff who had a screaming match today. It is bad when I have to help THERAPISTS to work on their conflict resolution skills.
Being mentally worn out physically wears me out sometimes. I don’t know if anyone else experiences that. I’m so happy to be away at a continuing education conference tomorrow!10 -

I'm a big fan of body glide. I used Vaseline once and didnt notice any protection. Its pricey, so beware that if you try it, it may be one of those items you cant live without.
I got a double pack cheaper on Amazon. Good thing too. Dh used the one i had in rotation on his bits. that ones his. I've heard chapstick works too. But havent tried it. One body glide stick last me a year or two, as long as i dont leave it in the hot car over the summer.

They come in 5" inseam and petite?! Be still my heart!
ETA: They only have the petites in size medium but I'm seriously considering buying them for later, and I never do that.2 -
It's easy to freak out at this stage. Slowly, as your miles builds, so will your confidence that you can do it. For me, the mental game is a huge part of running a marathon. If I go into it focused on knowing it's going to be 26.2 miles and I will be out there for several hours, I find that helps. You can do it!
As for the shorts discussion, I prefer compression shorts. My favorite pair is actually a shorter one, not sure if they are 3 or 5" inseam but they do have pockets. They were Lucy brand but I can't find them for sale anywhere now. I recently bought one of those 2-in-1 shorts with compression under a looser short but I don't like them because the compression short is so thin material it rides up (maybe just the one I bought).
Of the looser kind I have that I like is Oiselle Long Roga shorts. They don't ride up on me and seem to be long enough to prevent rubbing. They also have a side pocket that zips. I found some on clearance and have since bought a second pair because I like them so much.
I use body glide some, but more so for chafing around the bra band.

Tonight was marathon training group speedwork. We started with a 15 minute warm-up run and then the workout was an inverted ladder, with intervals of 4-3-2-1-1-2-3-4-5 minutes hard, with 2 minutes recovery between for the first four and 1 minute recovery between for the last 4. Followed by sprints and then a 10 minute cool-down. I felt tired but did okay for the most part. Had a side stitch towards the end that worked out fairly quickly but was painful for a while. I haven't had one of those in a while.2
