Hi all.
Exhausted. Good exhausted.
House was a lot more tired than I remember and our huge fridge and freezer do not fit. Small problems. I still love it. Some of our nice bits of furniture will have to go. Never mind.
Got to read Bea a story.

DH was hero today. Our neighbor's sitter got locked out in the rain without her phone. He tried the credit card trick because it was not dead bolted, and it worked! She had the baby, but the 18 month old was inside by the door upset. She tried to call the mom, but she was in school. When I tried to call the dad they said he worked there, but they has no contact info for him.
Lesson learned have all contact info and not just on a phone. I learned how useless those locks in the door knob are. DH was in the house in less than 2 minutes. In this case we all felt great when the door opened. The alternative was a locks smith with the resulting bill.

Heather - love the pix of the kids playing and your DH in the thick of it, lol. What fun you have brought into his life! I bet once you get moved into the house you'll find a lot of pleasant surprises too. You are right, furnishings are small problems.
Barbara AHMOD - well durn it, I can't read. My brain keep seeing your 60 gm protein as 60 gm carbs! LOL. Keep attacking those sugar carbs!! I would love to use honey but it's so thick that anything I pour out is automatically 1 tablespoon, lol. I use pure maple syrup - it's thinner and easier to measure, plus it was a gift from my sis in Indiana and she is familiar with the Amish family that cooks it down and bottles it. Nothing imitation. When I run out maybe I'll have to dip a toothpick in the honey.
OK I need advice on composite decking. The guy who was going to redo our deck with pressure treated cedar 2 x 4's (actually replace most of them which are rotted) is suggesting we go with composite like Trex. He said his neighbor can get a good deal on them. Been looking online... some brands are cheaply made and deteriorate and/or fade in a few years of hot sun. And I'm hearing they can get quite hot in the summer - hot for our feet and the dogs as well. The deck is on the south side of the house which bakes all summer in reflected heat from our light yellow house too. Our back door is at least 3' off the ground so we need the deck and a series of steps to get to land, lol.
Experience? Recommendations? Brands to watch out for? TIA!
Got the doggies home from the groomer. Our older dog is in GREAT shape thanks to the exercise she's now getting playing with the Rosie. Rosie got a thumbs up for losing a little weight. She was doing well on her morning walks and now refuses to go on them. Not sure what has changed her mind, she didn't have anything scary happen. I have a hunch she'd rather stay in the yard and look for rabbit doo to eat.
Have a good Thursday!

I personally have preferred wood. Friends of mine that have the composite I found burned my feet and they had a south facing deck. I for one wouldn't have it myself, although my husband wants it for our next deck.... this may be a battle

Thanks Carol - I see our local Home Depot sells Trex so will stop in. This information you shared was great - no pop-ups. I can't stand Home Depot's busy website - takes forever to load and we are on a high speed network.

Allie-- That is a great gift. I have a bear made out of my mom's pj's and I get comfort from having that. The bear has a bow around the neck with picture of mom and a poem.
NYKaren--we put mothballs around the outside of our house a couple times a year and they keep ant, spiders, everything out of the house. First couple days can smell them, but not after that.
Janetr--I really like that quote and I am going to work on just being the best me I can be each day. Thanks, I needed that more then you know.
Margaret--Good for DH the hero.
Short day today so get home and enjoy some alone time, before DH and DBIL get home.

Gals - I've just started to watch Episode 2 of "The Real Skinny on Fat" - looks very similar to Broken Brain type docuseries. From the intro blurbs I've read, it appears it's all about eating lots of healthy fats and some info about intermittent fasting. The one I'm watching right now is Montel Williams who has MS and treating it with diet.
If you are interested... check out www.therealskinnyonfat - dot - com. I missed the first episode, hoping they'll do a complete replay soon.

Lanette ~ I tried the 16/8 intermittent fasting for a week. Didn't lose any weight and felt sick with hunger during the fasting time. I have switched to doing two no carb meals a day (maybe 5 or 6 carbs during this time) and one evening meal that includes a starches. The 4 pounds I gained over my normal weight seem to have come off and I am not real hungry like before.

Hi ladies: Busy, busy around here. Got the son married last Saturday and my nephew is supposed to get married tomorrow. Have had son's puppy here along with mine. Woof! Two labradoodle puppies are way too energetic. Even with time in the dog run 3 times a day they still wear me out. My mom is here for the weddings and we have other company too. My sister, mother of tomorrow's groom, fell yesterday and is in the hospital with a broken femur. She is supposed to have surgery this morning. Don't know if she will make the wedding tomorrow or not. As quick as they like to get people out the door any more she could conceivably be there. We are eating fresh blueberries off of our own bushes. Yum! We dug these bushes out of the weeds 3 years ago and have babied them and this year we finally got a bumper crop. I have even frozen some. Also made some oat bran blueberry muffins.
Karen - Belated happy birthday.
Katla - Glad you are enjoying the RV.
Rye - How many weeks since you broke your toe? Are you keeping it taped? I was told 3 weeks when I broke mine.
Everyone take care, Sue in WA7 -
Sue in WA Blueberries. YumYum!
Lanette We once replaced a small landing/steps from our kitchen to the outdoors with Trex. We never regretted it. It's so sturdy and uniform. I think they mix sawdust and recycled plastic to make it, so I'm sure Trex gets hotter than wood, but ours was on the north side of the house.

Vicki, you are so welcome my dear. It's funny how some thing another person posts just speaks to us at that particular moment. I'm glad it was good timing.
I'm praying for you and your family. Having gone through my grandson being in and out of drug rehab for many years, your situation is close to my heart. We are all kind of holding out breath at this point. We hope he has finally come through on the other side, but then we have thought that before. Much love

My drain is out, and I'm finally taking my after surgery meds! I was able to get oxytocin pain medicine yesterday, at the Naval Clinic, but they don't do calcium pills. The surgeon's office was suppose to call us yesterday, and tell us the specific name and dosage of it, if an over the counter medicine. So I have been taking Lee's calcium pills, and Tums. I was feeling numbness today with my fingers and lips, so I went to do labs. But the doctors office, when we went there for the drain removal, had no info from the doctor on dosage etc. Husband was NOT happy! Of course, the moment we got home from the drain removal appt, the surgeon's office had called. The medicine is called Oscal D 500 mg pills, so I take 2 pills, FOUR times a day. That offending parathyroid was really taking a lot of calcium! The surgeon stated I would slowly take less and less over the next months.
Long day and I'm exhausted! I'm not taking oxytocin pain meds unless I really need it. I will have to take stool softener as well. Taking Advil PM gives me the same relief.
Hugs everyone!

Lanette,
Here is the summary of the first episode of “The Skinny on Fat”.
The Big Fat Lie
We’re going to begin with the sordid history of the low fat diet as Dr. Cate Shanahan traces the obesity and health crisis down to its root: Ancel Keys, a physiologist whose misleading statements set off the low-fat lie and set the stage for generations of bad health advice.
Dr. Shanahan explains how sugar and polyunsaturated fats wreak havoc on our bodies, and her deep understanding of biochemistry makes her the perfect person to explain the chemical reactions that run our bodies and the difference food can make for your health.
“Food is more than calories,” she explains.
“It’s chemical information that changes
you at a cellular level.”
Septic Shock and spontaneous combustion…despite what you’ve heard, that’s the truth about what “healthy” trans-free oils are producing. Does this sound like something you want in your body? Once you see this episode, you’ll join me in answering a resounding “no.”
Meet Dr. Jennifer Hays-Grudo, principal investigator for the Women’s Health Initiative. Jennifer was active in the early days of the heart-health movement, when the food pyramid first became popular.
She’ll show concrete proof that studies failed to show ANY relationship between a low-fat diet and reduced rates of cancer, and how the “French Paradox” (the fact that French people enjoy wine, cheese, and other “unhealthy” foods yet stay slim and healthy) is really not a paradox at all…the Mediterranean diet is just a healthier way to eat!
In an exciting interview, Dr. Dominic D’Agostino shares about his work healing seizure disorders with ketones. Not only does the ketogenic diet help alleviate oxygen toxicity seizures, but ketone salts are showing great promise - these powdered mixtures can be combined with water and taken daily, with excellent results. You don’t want to miss this one, because ketone salts are easily available and could make a difference in your life…whether you suffer from seizures or not.
As if that weren’t enough - there’s Dr. Joe Maroon. Dr. Maroon is the team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers and author of “Square One: A Simple Guide to a Balanced Life.”
He’ll share some fascinating information about how the food you ingest has a profound effect on your body - especially for those of you who have neurodegenerative diseases and chronic illness.
Dr. Maroon describes the kreb cycle, the relationship between insulin and fat, and the havoc insulin resistance can wreak on your brain...YES - your BRAIN!
His explanation of ketones will finally make sense of how the ketogenic diet works, and you’ll come away from this interview astounded by your body.
Then, I’m going to share my very personal story about how I took control of my own health and began a life-long journey to help others do the same.
In this first episode, you’ll hear how my childhood struggle with eczema and, later, a fight to rid my body of heavy metal toxicity launched my passionate career - and gave me critical insight into the power a healthy, natural diet has to heal body and mind.

The houses on both sides of us went on the market two weeks ago. As of yesterday, there are offers pending on both of them so we'll have new neighbors soon.
Jake and I tackled a project that we've been avoiding for a long time---getting rid of some trouble "stuff" in the garage that can't be dropped in the garbage can. We went to Goodwill where they accept TVs and electronics to be recycled and got rid of an old TV and computer, then we went to the moderate risk waste facility and brought two boxes of chemical stuff that we've wanted to get rid of for ages. It was hard because we were going places we've never gone before and were uncertain that we were taking the right stuff to the right place. What a relief to have that stuff out of our house. The next step is to dry up the old latex paint so we can put the cans in the garbage. Clearing clutter is filled with all sorts of emotional roadblocks.
Jake's treatments for the blood cancer are weekly along with a doctor's appointment on another day. He has only a few side effects and is feeling a bit more tired than usual but seems to be weathering this well. The doctor feels that nine to twelve weeks of this should knock the stuff out. We are hopeful too.
I picked up the too heavy dog and she shifted and I pulled some muscles in my lower back so I am dragging a bit. Still walking and dancing but avoiding weed pulling and sudden movement. I've got the ice pack on now. Also my daily step count has suffered on the days when Jake has an early appointment and then I sit in the waiting room. Still getting over 10,000 steps a day but not up to my usual goal of 15,000 to 17,000.

Did Karen Voit’s Sleek Essential DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do a 20/40/60 workout on the treadmill. This is where you run for 20 seconds, walk fast for 40 and then recover for 60
Karen – I have the butterfly gold pattern (which is discontinued and has been for a long time). I’m not even sure what the pattern is called that I got Jess, I think it’s Blue Lily. Looks like there’s a set for 7. I really like Corelleware. The dishes are light and you can stack so many more than you can with the stoneware or ceramic dishes. Plus, they almost never break (in 40 years, I think two pieces of my set have broken)
Pip – what are you doing to that poor dog??????? Lol
My daughter turned me onto this Tone It Up protein supplement. I didn’t realize how much I like the vanilla flavored! The one thing with their protein supplements is that it doesn’t have any added sugars (even artificial sugars) so I add some cinnamon to it, which works well. It would probably do well in a smoothie since it really doesn’t have an overpowering taste
Prepared the chicken and pork chops in marinade so Vince can grill them tomorrow.
We’re supposed to go to dinner at a friend’s house tonight and then to go see the play “nunsense”. I know that she’s having a pork tenderloin and I gave her some corn on the cob and am bringing cantaloupe so I have most of dinner already logged. Update: I’m not real crazy about pork tenderloin, but I will eat it. It was good. She made some gespacho which was good (I had some, not Vince). She had avacado and artichoke for the salad, which I had.
Went to Lowes Hardware today since Vince replaced this blind that we had. We needed a new one, the old one couldn’t be fixed. Stopped at the UPS store to give them some shipping peanuts (rather than putting them in the trash, they can just use them), then went to ACMoore who STILL doesn’t have the yarn I need for Colby’s scarf for Christmas, then to Kohl’s to see if they have blackout curtains for the back bedroom. They have a lot and I have a 30% coupon plus I can get an add’l $10 off a $50 purchase, which it probably will be. Now to decide on color. Stopped at the mall to get some shower gel for free for Jess. They have another coupon for later, so I may give one to Jess for Christmas and one to Denise
The lady at Bath & Body Works put this roll-on moisturizer for me to sample. I like the convenience, but it seems to stay “tacky” for quite a while
Margaret – don’t you just love it when a lock opens easily for you. On the other hand – it’s scary to think that a burglar could get in so easily
I like to get my honey from this guy right down the road. I can see his bee hives in his backyard. He had a sign out the other day that he FINALLY had honey, but today the sign was gone. Guess he only had a small amount of honey.
Lanette – we have composite wood on our deck. Never had a problem with it getting too hot. One thing is that mold and mildew grow on it. However, I’ve found that that “Wet and Forget” stuff works to remove it. I looked at all the boards, and, unfortunately, I can’t find the name. The deck was here when we bought the house. The next time we open the storage room I’ll look to see. I know there are some boards in there. Our deck is in the sun most of the day. The deck wood is a maroon color. The Real Skinny on Fat – I just wish it wasn’t a webcast. I wish I could download it onto my tablet and read (or listen to it) it when I’m able.
Just got back from “Nunsense”. I honestly didn’t think there would be that much singing. Well, it IS a musical. But one lady from Newcomers is in it. This is the first time she’s performed since her stroke. I know at first she was apprehensive, but she did well. You would never have known that she had a stroke
Sue in WA – I’m so sorry for your sister. I wish she could make the wedding. I know I’d be real hurting if I couldn’t make one of my children’s weddings
Barbie – feel better fast

Karen in VA: Belated Happy Birthday!
Janetr: Ditto what others said about how great you look.
Barbie: Hope your back heals quickly, and that Jake beats thoroughly beats the cancer. ((hugs))
We just got back from a 3 night/4 day road trip through central Colorado visiting national parks and other beautiful places. My DB served as our driver and was in perfect bliss in this role. He has adjusted well to DH's slower pace and cognitive impairment, for which I am truly grateful. DH genuinely enjoyed himself, especially seeing everything with more clarity post cataract surgery. My brother is plagued with obesity, stomach issues, anxiety and requires a nightly sleep medication which causes vivid dreams. I was the 'mom', making sure everyone was comfortable, fed and rested. It's been years since I spent quality time with my younger brother, and so will not take any of this time together for granted. This is the same brother who almost passed 18 months ago due to his stomach bleeding and other effects of alcoholism. He is going to stay with us till Wednesday morning, and I am showering him with Reiki every minute we're together. Just have to help him get strong and healthy again.
I have been blessed to see some awe inspiring scenic views in my day, but if you ever get to the western slope of Colorado definitely visit your Colorado National Monument. Jaw-dropping vistas. My travel partners were intimidated by the heights, so we didn't take any of the trail hikes. Photos below give you a sense of the park. Also visited the Museum of the Ute in Montrose. Incredible Native American beadwork on display.

Hello ladies, and good morning,
I've decided to make a new start this week and found this discussion when I was looking through the forums for some extra motivation. My exercise is good, since I've found a friendly and supportive gym and go three to four times a week for HIIT. My food habits are not so great. We've just had a big, disruptive reorganisation at work and I've been stress eating quite a lot, so I've probably put on 10 kilos since January. I've been overweight most of my life, and my doctor tells me I need to lose 20 kilos to get to a healthy weight range. I want to get most of the way there by the end of the year if I can.
I'm looking at starting invisalign treatment to straighten my teeth in the autumn, has anyone here tried that? I suspect it might help with my weight a lot, as no snacks between meals!
It's really helped writing this down. Today is day 2, the goal is 1500 calories, wish me luck!

JanetR - you look marvelous!
Rori - you do, too! Retirement suits you.
Rebecca - hope you're feeling great this morning and recovering well.
Emma - welcome, we have a number of ladies from the UK on this thread - we're glad you're here.
Welcome to everyone who's new!
Closing day today, final walkthrough at 8 a.m. this morning. Everything's funded, it SHOULD be a matter of simply signing the papers and getting the keys at 4 p.m.!
Yesterday, I drove an hour up-country to talk to the VA surgeon. He showed me the X-rays, and my right knee is literally bone hitting bone now. The left one is not quite that bad, but will be fixed after I heal completely from getting the right knee replaced. He wants me to be at a BMI of 35 or less. Per their scale, I'm at 35.3 right now. So all the hard work since January was not in vain! Literally a pound and a half away. Oddly enough, I did not know what the requirement was - it was just serendipity.
But, due to needing to take some significant time off work, and how insane my travel schedule is, I've decided to delay the process a bit and get it done in December, our winter slowdown. Basically, he told me that every pound I lose between now and then will speed my recovery--and the better shape I'm in, the more quickly I'll recover, as well. So - I have a goal (did anyway), and renewed determination to get there...
Love y'all,
Lisa in Arkansas8
