I am not feeling so strong. I am going back to the beginning of this thread and re read as much as I can to remind myself why I want to stay dry. I appreciate ALL the contributions and reflections that are on these pages. They are so honest and heartbreaking as well as funny and insightful.8

Hello everyone! I am new to MFP and was excited to see this AF community. My hubby and I have had our ups and downs staying AF over the years.
While I have been ready to make this change for some time now and can take or leave alcohol, that isnt the case from my hubs. Each year he'd do a 90 day cleanse with me but there was always an end point and he would quickly get back to happy hour each evening. Now he has to adopt an AF lifestyle due to some health issues. In order for him to manage them, staying AF is a must. He knows it's time, after how sick it made him, and he's been doing so great. However, we are coming up on the 90 day mark and while he seems strong, I am worried for him as the 90 day mark in the past signified the end of a cleanse. We are also taking our first AF long weekend next month and I hope he will be able to relax and have some fun. Our past vacations were always centered around alcohol.
Any tips on how to help a loved one during the first year AF?
Thank you!

Welcome @jlunt7827 ! There are so many wonderful resources on line. The sober school. Craig Beck videos on you tube. The alcohol experiment. There are also many books on the subject. My personal favorite is Alcohol Explained by William Porter. I read it like a bible. It helps reinforce why I do not want to drink. I'd also suggest going back to the beginning of this thread and reading. There are tons of great tips from the members here.4

Sorry I've been away. I was struck Wed. night with severe vertigo. I have never had it. Tuesday night, I had my first bout and I thought "WTH was that?" The room was spinning out of control. I went to work the next day but that night, I had such vertigo that awoke me at 4 a.m. and I barely crawled to the bathroom. I never knew this type of horror illness existed. I couldn't lift my head up for 16 hours without getting sick or dizzy. Day 3 today I am finally better. I have medicine and went to Chiro for Epely maneuver to help. Such a terrible experience.
That's where I am today. In bed, just recovering from harrowing experience.4 -
@jlunt7827 Welcome! Our little board is full of people who want to be AF or at least will do their best to reach that goal. One day at a time is a brilliant philosophy. So you can tell your husband don't think of it as a year. That's too daunting. Think of it as "just for today, I will be AF...." It's wonderful you are supportive. I remember when I told my husband I thought I was an alcoholic, he was empathetic and then ordered himself a glass of wine. Would have been nice for him to join me in solidarity. So, it's very thoughtful of you to join him on this health challenge. xo4

Sorry about the vertigo @RubyRed427 sounds awful! Hope you're feeling better ❤️3

@RubyRed427, poor you! I cannot imagine being dizzy for such a prolonged period. I'm so glad you're better today. Probably just feeling normal will be a huge thing to celebrate after that! Hugs, and hope you have a wonderful weekend.3

@donimfp @whitpauly thanks for your kind words! I am much better and am taking this opportunity to truly relax. Love you !2

Sorry...This is a CRAZY ordeal. This happened to my husband a few months ago. It was so bad he called me home from work. (Hed never call me home from work)!
Rest and feel better. ❤3 -

Congratulations. 7 months today for me. Its life changing isnt it? I definitely wouldn't have lost the weight if I didn't stop with the beers. Im down like 29 pounds. Hard to believe.11 -
@RubyRed427 @JenT304 Thank you for the welcome and your tips. I will check them all out. I am so glad I found this group. @RubyRed427 I hope you are feeling better.6

I have been AF for 32 days now. I was drinking a LOT of whiskey for years. It's a daily struggle, believe me, and this discussion group is just what I was looking for. Thank you!12

@striderkev Bravo! Keep it going!3

just had my 6 month follow up blood test and didn't have one bad number on the whole report. In fact, the numbers were much much better than I ever thought they would be! I went from very dangerous levels at my heaviest last April to near perfect now. Obviously losing 74 lbs and exercising 6 days a week was key, but I don't think I would have had near the success without quitting alcohol when I started this journey. The results on this test prove to me it was one of the best health decisions of my life.9

That's great news @nighthawk584!4

Hey good for you! That'll help you sleep better at night. Nothing worse than worry about health.4 -

Now you know you can really do this. Keep at it

I've been on meds for 5 years that mean no alcohol. After first month or so you don't really miss it only at gatherings when others are drinking but then you can claim credit for being driver!5

Hello All: I've been out of commission on here for the past week because my laptop had to go to the laptop doctor. I've only had this for one year & spent a bit of $$ so that I would have a quality product...ANYHOO, the hard drive needed to be replaced, so I guess I got the lemon on the production line. The one year warranty expired Sept 2 and voila...
I tried to put the app on my tablet & phone but no go...the techno-tard reared her ugly head and prevented me from being able to set it up..but I am now back and it's nice to see all the comments and new faces...WELCOME5 -
I, basically have been alcohol free for thirty years...I was diagnosed with bipolar thirty years ago, and these meds don't mix well with alcohol...Once in a great while(on New Year's Eve, at a wine and cheese social), I will have ONE GLASS...This is in caps because I NEVER have more than one glass! ahhahaha Also, I NEVER EVER drive, even with only one glass...Good luck on your sobriety...This is a good goal...7

Good morning friends! I finally feel better- vertigo is minor just when I turn over in bed or recline too fast. It is livable like that. No alcohol for awhile and sleeping better. This weekend, my daughter is coming home from college to visit. I am so excited. Hope you have a great weekend!!6

@whitpauly I am happy you are doing well! You are a strong cookie!!5

Congrats to those who have long sobriety times. Wow! I am impressed and a little jealous; but we will all get there slowly but surely.5

Bravo! I bet your body is healing and your brain is rejuvenating. I feel sorry for our bodies and brains when we drink; it's imbibing poison on purpose.4 -
Hello all! I don't normally participate in groups or message boards, but I could really use some encouragement.
I'm on Day 2 of sobriety. After trying countless times for the past 2 years to moderate my drinking, I've finally accepted the fact that I'm unable to. It's affected my life negatively in so many ways I've finally decided enough is enough.
I live in a very rural community and don't have any close friends I can rely on to help me deal with this, so I thought I'd try creating my own small community online instead. I look forward to chatting with you all here and hope I can be as encouraging for you all as you can be for me!11 -

Welcome ! We have all tried to moderate many many times. You're not alone. We would love to see your posts and chat. One thing that helped me is to treat this like a college course. Research facts and tips. Find online videos on youtube to view...
Here are some that pop into my head:
Annie Grace - The alcohol experiment - you can sign up for her free 30 day program and there is a chat/boards to post on so you have support
The Sober School
Videos: Stop Drinking Expert Craig Beck
Books: Alcohol Lied to me; Drinking: A Love Story4 -
@BeccaC220, welcome! Yeah, I just don’t get those strange creatures who can moderate! I’ve been on this thread since RubyRed first created its first iteration in January of 2018. It’s a great group. I’ve been probably 50% AF during this time. Not my ideal but so much better than without this group. We stumble but pick ourselves up and support each other and move toward healthy happy living every day. I don’t think we can expect more from ourselves.6
