Today's run was with the local running group, along with the threat of rain in the air. With a dew point of 73F, it was going to be a humid one, and then the heavens opened up right as we were setting off. One way or another, we were all going to end up completely soaked through by the time we were done.

Question for the group
Anyone know why we get iliac crest bone area pain?
It’s not the top, it’s behind and back of it.
How to get rid off it?
I’ve been to two physiotherapists they both manipulate the last one says stretch it out. I’m stretching like crazy and mean ones that should target the leg and hip and gluteus. Yet I’m not bad walking but it hurts and sit then get up it’s like someone is ripping my left hip off my body.
I’ve been reading that portion behind the iliac crest bone is where it hurts it burns and times I can’t even walk. There are nerve and arteries but this is not just painful it’s demoralizing.
Any suggestions?0 -
I'm going to be smart and not run today since my ankle is still bothering me (not as bad as yesterday though). After today my next scheduled run is Tuesday which would be 5 days of no running. Hopefully that's enough to nip whatever this is in the bud.4

@travelling_lots I just went through this and was off for a few weeks. I'd never had such pain and I couldn't stand up straight or roll over in bed. Walking was very hard and I couldn't take a full step. I thought it was my glutes, but my physio said I had sacroiliac joint dysfunction. He did some manipulation around the front hip flexors that hurt like hell. The pain radiated all through my belly. And he gave me exercises that helped quite a bit and a pack of two massage balls to use for pressure points on the front and back. Most were cable exercises. He also did laser treatment on the lower back/glutes. My experience with laser at physiotherapy has been that it is a miracle. He said the cause in my case was the impact from running and hiking one weekend, but the primary cause is shortening and weakening of the psoas muscles from sitting too much at work. Stretching makes sense, but he suggested it also may need strengthening. Hope you heal quickly!
@sarahthes Smart to rest. Hope it's nothing serious!3 -

MTD: 7.76 miles / 25 miles
Had one of my walk portions interrupted by a driver asking for directions. Then, I got all mixed up and felt like I had to start my next 5-min run right away without a rest. I felt amazed that I had run for almost ten minutes without a rest, but Garmin disagreed and told me I took the whole rest interval lol. I can't believe it took me most of my rest to give directions. Oh well, week 4 day 1 complete. I was worried about it, but it's done.11 -

Thank you, I've been at it like this for almost 3 years. And everyone was more concerned to deal with my back injury than my hip that was the last thing on the list. But it's debilitating, totally crippling. I m not happy you went through it because it's very painful, but thankful you can relate with symptoms. And share what they've suggested to you.
So, far they said my joints are perfect. MRI came back good too.
Yes, they're now doing manipulations and the last one on Thur wow! I'm black and blue all my left side. But they gave only exercise squats with a band around my knees. As if I'm sitting on a chair only.
Out of desperation I've been designing my own exercises. But scared to over do it, I've been on the edge of my bed since it's supper high using my body weight and rotating my leg hanging off the bed in a directions a few times to loosen and strengthen I'm so sore and exhausted of doing that these past few days it's not funny. But it's feeling better.
Your suggestion of cables I think is an excellent idea, I will start doing that with tubing to work gradually up.
I'm stretching like you have no idea. I do yoga 2-3 times a day everyday. Flexibility is amazing. The confusing part is I'm already completely as pretzel in many directions and can hold it and yet I still feel needs more stretching and there is no further room to go, the floor is in the way.
Reason the physio went heavy duty with manipulations and I've been taking it easy resting the back, but still exercising and just today I feel I can rotate my hips fully in all directions which blows my mind with how is this possible.
But your right I have a sedentary job, and sitting over 42 min does me in. And I'm crawling even out of the car seat.
Thank you!

The Dunkin Run Arc Race half marathon was this morning. As promised, the weather cooperated and it was in the upper 50s and blessedly NOT HUMID at the start. It felt so good to be a little chilly waiting to start. I had a good talk with my coach this week as I debated whether to really race this one or just use it as a long run (and add on) or something in between. He's not a fan of that in between idea at all, so he encouraged me to figure out the pace I needed to match my previous PR, hold that for the first 6-7 miles, and then see if I felt like I could maintain or even go faster to go for a new PR.
I more or less followed this advice. I aimed for a 10 min average pace, which I figured would put me a bit ahead of my PR, but I might not be able to maintain it the whole time. I was a little faster for the first mile and then hovered around or slightly under the 10 min pace for the rest of the race. I felt ok, but was struggling with my water belt shifting, and my shorts were not quite right somehow, and then I felt my allergies kicking in. Ugh, I wanted to use those excuses to slow down but I was too stubborn about trying to hold that pace. I ended up with an official time of 2:10:41, which was almost a 3 minute PR for me, and an average pace of 9:59. As the race was sponsored by Dunkin Donuts, I celebrated by eating a bunch of their munchkins (donut holes). The medal was really cute - had a donut that you can "dunk" in and out of the coffee. The picture below is on my medal rack, which is FULL and I need a new one!
Really happy with how this turned out, and feeling good about how my strength and running are progressing as I get closer to my marathon. 7 weeks away, so still lots of running to do, including getting up to 20 miles.23 -
Well done @katharmonic!1
-
@katharmonic - total medal envy here.
I ran the Louisa May Alcott Orchard House 10k this morning. It was around 70 deg F and quite humid, but nowhere near as hot or humid as the 8k I ran on Labor Day. I was hoping to come in under an hour, but didn't quite manage it and finished in 1:00:55 (I went out waaaay too fast and suffered a bit at the end). Last year, that time would have got me 2nd place in my age-group. This year there were some seriously speedy women and I managed 7th place (out of ten). But it was a fun race and the post-race chocolate cake was seriously good.16 -
Was gearing up to go out last night for a run and got called into work. So no Friday Evening run.
Got home at 1:30am. So at 7:10 this morning when the alarm went off I hit the OFF Button and rolled over. Did get out by 9 - tried to run but just wasn't working. Whole body was just wiped out. Dropped down to a walk and knocked off 6.5 km 70 minutes. So about 1 km in it started to drizzle and then the wind picked up. It was a tad chilly. Counting it in my monthly log since I still managed to worked up a sweat. There was only one other group out and I got into the coffee shop about 3 slurps ahead of them. Moved over to the small table beside the gas fireplace.
From Environment Canada: Detailed Forecast Today Rain with risk of a thunderstorm. Amount 10 to 20 mm. Wind north 20 km/h gusting to 40. High 13. UV index 1 or low. Temp Low 6 High 13. Current 9.
Next Week : Tue, 11 Sep Periods of rain. High 8. Cloudy with 60 percent chance of rain showers or flurries Low minus 4.

@travelling_lots - wow - talk about a close call! Have you ever seen this video? The music is annoying - but it reminds me of your experience!

@katharmonic - that is a fantastic medal! Congrats on such a great race.
It was blessedly cool this morning - 67ish? Low humidity. What a difference it made in my run. This is the 3rd week I did 8 miles and my pace was 3 1/2 minutes faster per mile! I attribute that completely to the better weather.

26.29 miles this morning for a marathon. I'm counting Garmin since it is probably closer to right when you count moving along the course. It is a BQ course, but I know I didn't follow the straightest lines possible (who does?).
Blood sugar was fairly good because I started a bit high and there were a lot of water stops where I could get Gatorade (sugar) or food (sugar). I kept it somewhat high the entire race for fear of dropping low. Weather was nice and cool, and there was no rain (it's rained most of the last week, so this was a bit of a concern).
I got last in my age group - I'm slow, so not surprised. However, I did way better than I anticipated. My official time was 4:44:57, which is a PR for me. I'm very happy with that and I know there is also a lot of room to improve.

@garygse It took me a couple minutes to get your point; I've always seen my average stride expressed in meters. FWIW, 1.15 m is about 45.3 inches. (BTW, you ran faster than I did today.)
@midwesterner85 26.29 miles for a certified marathon is pretty good tangents. I tend to come in around 26.4 for a certified marathon. That's just the race distance; I don't record the jog (or, this year, walk) from the corral to the starting mat.
To be fair, I've only completed 2 certified courses, Buffalo and Boston.6 -
September Running Totals (miles)
9/1 – rest day
9/2 – 15.80 warmup + Oak Tree Half
9/3 – rest day
9/4 – 7.23 warmup + XC workout
9/5 – 6.02 group run
9/6 – 6.05 warmup + XC workout
9/7 – rest day
9/8 – 14.23 paced run + solo run
September running total to date – 49.33
Nominal September mileage goal: 165 miles
Real Goals: Run Oak Tree well, winning my age group and finishing healthy. Build base/train toward Wineglass, running PG XC #1 so as not to be injured, and running the USATF Masters XC Championship so as not to be injured. Run Wineglass easy, finishing healthy for a good recovery in October.
Today's notes – It felt like autumn this morning: 63º F (17º C), 14-15 mph wind, overcast. Yeah, in March that will feel hot; today it felt chilly standing around and wonderful running. Dew point was up around 58, so it wasn't as dry as real autumn weather; but neither was it the humidity suckfest that I've had all of July and August and half of this week.
Held up the sign to pace 8:00, and got no takers. The 8:30 pacer got one, so I ran with them for 8 miles. He did a good job, brought us in at an average 8:29 pace. That was 8:30 even by his watch, which should be official because I relied on him to set the pace. What happens when you run slow in good weather? 8.05 miles in 1:08:16, 10 seconds in HR zone 2, and 25:50 in HR zone zero.
The pacee was only running 8, and the 8:30 pacer was tapering, so I ran 6 solo. Brought that in at an average 7:59 pace, right around where I was supposed to be pacing in the first place.
Nice, easy moderately long run for the day before a short race. Life is good.

I was thinking the same thing. I have been known to gain over a MILE on a certified course But yea, start the watch when you cross the chip timing line, and stop it when you cross again. That is a marathon, pretty much no matter what your watch says.6 -

I disagree with 0c being fairly cold outside given its literally freezing. Celsius makes a lot of sense when you think about it, 0 is the temperature water freezes and 100 is the temperature it boils (at sea level)
But granted when you compare it to Fahrenheit...
-40 is the best temp - both are the same lol2 -

I think that's all relative to what you're used to. Our winters regularly drift between 0 F and 0 C, and I'd only call one of those "really cold" - the other counts as "warm" come January or February! My family in CA, on the other hand, would agree that 0 C is much more than just "fairly cold".4 -
Great job @katharmonic! Love the medal!
Great job to @midweserner85 also! Great PRs.
@travelling_lots That was a close call with the skunk. I was freaked out when I "ran into" one last week and he was at least 5 yards away from me.4 -

Also, hard pass on -40. The coldest I’ve personally experienced was around -27F/-32C, and it was brutal.2 -

Lol, -50 even more so! The look you have on your face when you leave the house, whether smile or frown, is the same look you have when you get where you are going
And have to agree that 0C is almost tropic warming in some icy winters!5 -

@kgirlhart Did you get sprayed? I tell you very stressful situations and I think we’re not in matting season yet. Or did we pass it ?
I think I’m going start carrying my head light just because they nocturnal and the dont like it ,hopefully they’ll stay far away
@kgirlhart Did you finish ok with you skunk friend? You didn’t get sprayed right ?
@midweserner85 sounded like a good race. Hope you had fun.
