@travelling _lots Thankfully I did not get sprayed. Once I past him I looked back and he did raise his tail, but I guess he wasn't too threatened and I just kept on going.1

I disagree with 0c being fairly cold outside given its literally freezing. Celsius makes a lot of sense when you think about it, 0 is the temperature water freezes and 100 is the temperature it boils (at sea level)
But granted when you compare it to Fahrenheit...
-40 is the best temp - both are the same lol
Also, hard pass on -40. The coldest I’ve personally experienced was around -27F/-32C, and it was brutal.
Lol, -50 even more so! The look you have on your face when you leave the house, whether smile or frown, is the same look you have when you get where you are going
And have to agree that 0C is almost tropic warming in some icy winters!
LOL definitely perspective. I live in the "winter less far north" (southern hemisphere), our lowest temp this winter was I think 2 degrees. Mostly we got to 4 as a low. So yeah 0 feels freezing to me haha0 -
PastorVincent wrote: »@midwesterner85 26.29 miles for a certified marathon is pretty good tangents. I tend to come in around 26.4 for a certified marathon. That's just the race distance; I don't record the jog (or, this year, walk) from the corral to the starting mat.
To be fair, I've only completed 2 certified courses, Buffalo and Boston.
I was thinking the same thing. I have been known to gain over a MILE on a certified course But yea, start the watch when you cross the chip timing line, and stop it when you cross again. That is a marathon, pretty much no matter what your watch says.
I started the watch as I crossed the start mat and just after crossing the finish mat. My watch time ended up 1s longer than the official time because I didn't stop it fast enough.
As to the relatively small tangents, this started in a small town (wide roads) for the first <2 miles and the last 2 miles were in a small town (wide roads) also. The rest was on a rails-to-trails biking/running/walking trail, which means it is about as wide as a railroad track. There would not be much back and forth or zigging / zagging along the majority of the course. I did try to get relatively close to the right tangents in towns, but I know I wasn't perfect. In the last mile, there is a right turn, then several blocks to a left turn. After the right turn, I went to the left too fast and wandered back towards the right side of the street before the left-hand turn. I was going to high-five the cops directing traffic (on right side of that intersection). Since I know I am not winning, I figure I can spend time thanking volunteers and public service employees who help support the race.4 -

Oh right. So we are just scared with the memory for awhile.

The Dunkin Run Arc Race half marathon was this morning. As promised, the weather cooperated and it was in the upper 50s and blessedly NOT HUMID at the start. It felt so good to be a little chilly waiting to start. I had a good talk with my coach this week as I debated whether to really race this one or just use it as a long run (and add on) or something in between. He's not a fan of that in between idea at all, so he encouraged me to figure out the pace I needed to match my previous PR, hold that for the first 6-7 miles, and then see if I felt like I could maintain or even go faster to go for a new PR.
I more or less followed this advice. I aimed for a 10 min average pace, which I figured would put me a bit ahead of my PR, but I might not be able to maintain it the whole time. I was a little faster for the first mile and then hovered around or slightly under the 10 min pace for the rest of the race. I felt ok, but was struggling with my water belt shifting, and my shorts were not quite right somehow, and then I felt my allergies kicking in. Ugh, I wanted to use those excuses to slow down but I was too stubborn about trying to hold that pace. I ended up with an official time of 2:10:41, which was almost a 3 minute PR for me, and an average pace of 9:59. As the race was sponsored by Dunkin Donuts, I celebrated by eating a bunch of their munchkins (donut holes). The medal was really cute - had a donut that you can "dunk" in and out of the coffee. The picture below is on my medal rack, which is FULL and I need a new one!
Really happy with how this turned out, and feeling good about how my strength and running are progressing as I get closer to my marathon. 7 weeks away, so still lots of running to do, including getting up to 20 miles.
Love the medal. Congrats!0 -
6.2 miles on hot muggy trails. Still not feeling well, but got it done. I'm not sure what's wrong but I feel blah and tired and my sugar is out of whack.
It rained after we got done and now it's cooler - hoping the cool weather stays for a while.
Question: I need a new long sleeved running shirt for when the weather changes over. My old one, which was a tech shirt with reflective stripes, isn't made anymore. What shirt do the ladies here prefer when it's too nippy for a racerback/t-shirt but too warm for a jacket? Preferably something that doesn't have a high neckline?6 -

Ran another Xterra trail event today - this one was brutal. A lot of mud. Seriously sucking clay mud and deep pools of wet mud. I did the mid distance which was 13.3km and it took me 1:52. Along with the mud was 400m of elevation. As I said, a tough day at the office. I did ok but managed to slip over 300m from the end, landing in - you guessed it - the mud. People either loved it or hated it. I fall into the latter camp. It was seriously unpleasant off the gravel logging roads. Remind me to only run at Riverhead in the summer!! (There's mud then too, but way less).
By the way, those bushes alongside the track that you could potentially grab onto to stop yourself arsing over are gorse, i.e. really prickly.
Riverhead can kiss my aching, muddy...

7 miles in the rain this morning. The other 5 people who were scheduled to run with me canceled because they didn’t want to get wet. I love running in the rain (as long as it’s not thunderstorming). As long as I have a hat, I prefer running in the rain vs. running with the glowing ball of sky lava overhead. Am I the only crazy one?
September goal miles = 175 / 51 miles-to-date

10/27 = Hill Country Halloween Half Marathon
11/22 = Georgetown Turkey Trot

My husband and I ran the Stadium 5k run yesterday morning. It was part of the series that we are doing, but the cause was really good too. The funds are used to support veterans in the area, so the pre run had a taps ceremony and an introduction of war vets from the area. It was our first time doing the race, but they mentioned that there is a guy that has run with the flag and the names of fallen soldiers on his chest each year.
It was low 50F’s when we left the house. I wore a tank top and was chilled waiting for the start, but was comfortable once the race started. I liked the route a lot, the first mile was roads and the last two miles was a paved trail along the river. The race finished on a track at the old Packers stadium. At the finish line they had vets and soldiers giving congratulations. I had sprinted in and they were a bit close to the finish mat, so I kind of missed them as I was catching my bearings. My husband was able to shake the hands of the war vets though. They gave out dog tags to all the finishers. It was my fastest 5k of the series thus far at 28:08 (28:27 prior) so a little faster.

@katharmonic Fantastic race result, with a very nice PR; congrats!
@midwesterner85 Congrats on your marathon!
@MobyCarp I may have run a tiny bit faster, but I bet a heart rate comparison would tell an entirely different story.
@Orphia Congrats on being alcohol-free for seven months! I found the money I saved with not buying alcohol, and the time saved by not drinking, all crossed over to running-related things.
@ContraryMaryMary Running through that amount of mud isn't my cup of tea, but I take my hat off to those that do it!
@amymoreorless No, you're not the only one.
Normally I don't run on Sundays, but the dew point dropped down to a 'low' 68F overnight, and with a temp of just 70F and no rain in sight, it was simply too good of an opportunity to pass up. So out I went to run a different route that ended up with a similar distance to yesterday. With no soaking rain, and a cool northerly breeze blowing in, there was no rush to finish the run, so I took my time and enjoyed the early morning air.
This break in the weather is supposed to last for at least the first half of the week, but then the heat and humidity is predicted to return just in time for next weekend's Tour Des Fleurs half marathon pacing run. Oh yay.

Haha @ContraryMaryMary ! Oh I'm laughing with you, not at you! Way to tough it out. I love mud, but do not like it on me.
@rheddmobile Timely question regarding winter wear. Youll get a dozen different answers. Oddly I'm a hot natured runner. 50F, I still end up shirtless. I have some long sleeve Nike tech shirts, cold gear? I have one thats really nice, has a hood and the reflective stripes . I rarely wear ir. Its not super cold here.
What temps are you anticipating dressing for?
I put notes in my training journal on what i wore and the temps, how it worked so every winter i dont go through this relearning the comfort levels.5 -
@katharmonic Very impressive HM, congrats on a nice PR!
@BruinsGal_91 Way to go on your 10K!
@midwesterner85 Congrats on your marathon!
@Orphia Super proud of you for being alcohol-free for seven months! I am going through the early stages of sobriety right now with 2 family members.
@ContraryMaryMary That mud isn't my cup of tea either, but I am very glad for you!
@amymoreorless No, I much prefer running in the rain to running in the heat and humidity!
@garygse I would kill to have a 1.15m stride! I think I did that ONE time. My normal stride is about 1.05m, but lately it is under 1.0m. Granted, I am only 5'4", but still...
Thankfully much cooler this morning due to all the rain. Was a slow 13 miles, and felt like I hadn't run in weeks. But was good to get a long run in. Funny thing happened on the trail. Heard a crack above my head, and a branch fell right in front of me, with a squirrel attached. I'm sure it scared the crap out of him just as much as it did me!
It was a good way to end a good week of running.

No run today for about the 4th or 5th day🤨, R knee issues, needed new shoes and date weekend with the wife. Running tomorrow come heck or high water. Signed up for a local 5k, never run it before but I think it uses the same park trails that I run. Guess we'll see. Race is in 2 weeks. Great race reports all, read all 140 posts that I had to catch up on but too many to comment on individually.
Did want to answer @MobyCarp group questions though.
Why did you start running? I started running as a way to quit smoking without gaining weight initially, then loved the challenge of it. That was 5 years ago. I quit for a while, but came back to it because running gives me an excuse to eat more as I lose weight, my current job being fairly sedentary.
Why do I keep running? Well as noted above I love to eat, but also for my health. Dad had heart surgery this year, mom's looking at knee replacement in the next couple of years and struggles with type 2 diabetes. I do not want to be there in 20 years looking back and saying to myself "if only". I keep running also because of meeting new people like y'all who inspire me to go farther, faster and work harder than I think I can.11 -

Short run yesterday morning, then we had a busy day of swim practice meeting, flag football practice, Family Day at my husband’s work, and a birthday party. I’m getting too old for all that!
I’m a bit worried about Florence heading our way. I’ll be glued to the news in the next few days. Stores are already selling out of water and supplies. I keep hoping it goes out to sea or hits further south - sorry anyone who lives south of me!

Race day came and went this morning! I did really well. Finished off my race at 32:39 with a 10:30 pace. WOOHOO!
Didn't realize until the night before 2 of the 3 miles were uphill. But thankfully, only about half a mile in each section, so there was some relief in between hills. The fact I simply was able to keep pace was nothing short of a miracle, but it also showed I had prepared well for the race.
Can't wait to grow more and see where I go next! It was my first race of the year. So, more than anything, just excited.

Great video! Never seen it.
They are beautiful to look at though. Thanks for sharing.
It gave me the hibbie jibbies looking at it when I noticed the foot. That’s too close for comfort.
Can’t believe it he/she managed to tape it. I was holding my breath with one skunk. With those 5 I would have fainted probably. Lol1 -
@runnergrl82 Congratulations! Love the metal!
@Scott6255 5'4"? U kitten me? I figured you were 6'2" and 55yo.
I'm 5' 5" and my running stride length is ~0.90m. shorter stride, mid foot strike, docs orders. @garygse must be 8 feet tall with a stride like that! daddy long legged fella, must look like a white Bolt

@jele30 and @RunnerGrl1982 well done!
I got up this morning for a 5k race pace run, got about 500m and realised I forgot to take my inhaler. I ral another 200m but knew it just wasn't going to happen. So I came home. I'm taking my gear to work and will try a couple of hill runs at lunchtime instead.4 -
September goal: 85 miles

9/4: 4.5 miles
9/5: 4.5 miles
9/6: 5.5 miles
9/9: 7.5 miles
29/85 miles completed
Today's run was a really nice 7.5 miles. The temperature was a nice 70°f. It was still pretty humid but the dew point was only 68° which was a lot nicer than it has been lately. There was also a nice breeze from the north so it was a cooler run. There were several times that it felt misty. It wasn't really rain. There was just so much moisture in the air that I could feel myself running into water droplets. It actually felt pretty good.
I was going to run a route I haven't run in a while, but I saw 3 dogs who were out of their fence so I turned around and adjusted my route and ended up coming up with my route on the fly. It was kind of nice. Since I started running before work I stick to a route that is well lit and I know I have time to run. It was nice to run some different roads for a change.
I ran my fastest 10K time to date so I was pretty excited about that. There are never really any 10k's near here so I haven't had a chance to run an actual 10k race, but I felt pretty good about my PR anyway.
@RunnerGrl1982 Congrats on the 5K. Cool medal!

@RunnerGrl1982 Congrats on a great 5K race!
@Scott6255, @Elise4270, and @PastorVincent Ha, I'm the shortest of my brothers at 5'10"...they're both over 6' and have legs that go all the way up to their armpits; with attributes like that, they'd probably be great as runners, but neither of them run unfortunately.5 -
@bruinsgal_91 congrats on your 10k. Great time - very close to your goal - and I'd certainly enjoy post-race chocolate cake!
@ContraryMaryMary well done on your Xterra trail race. Muddy and prickly and gravelly does not sound at all fun to me. You are tough.
@jele30 great job on your Stadium 5k. Well done getting you best time of the series! Cool shirt and dog tags for a great cause.
@RunnerGrl1982 congrats on your 5k too! Nice pace, especially for most of it being uphill!

Thanks to everyone for your nice words and congratulations on my half.
The stride length discussion got me curious so I looked at my Garmin data. My average stride length for the race was .95 meters, with a low of .91 and high of 1.11 (last .1 miles). My average cadence was 171 with a peak of 190.
I looked back at a speedwork session which included sprints and my stride length remains about the same, but cadence peaked up to 196 and 240 during the sprints section. For a regular base run my stride length was .82 m and cadence 162 (peak 177).
Interesting to think about. Overall my cadence seems to stay in a relatively small range, except for when I try to go all out for sprints. But otherwise my stride length changes more from base running, to race pace, to sprinting. I'm 5'10", so it seems like my stride should maybe be longer than it is. My coach mentioned one time something about looking for me to open up my stride, as an indicator of when I was running better. So that might be something I naturally do more than increase step frequency, and I wonder if I could work on that more consciously.
And with that, I should go out for an easy run because I almost forgot that I haven't yet today.9
