WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR SEPTEMBER 2018

Thank you Barbie for bringing us to a new month!
Happy September 1st! Like many others, September does feel a lot like January for me. While January is the beginning of a new year, (new vacation days kick in, planning for the entire year happens at that time); September is when I have the biggest turnover of kids. School aged kids leave for school and I fill those openings with new kids. This year, my new one joined in June and this week two little girls rejoin our group after being gone for the summer (teacher mom). Next fall I will lose four of my kids to school (most likely), which will leave me with four new children.
August was a great month for me. Business was good. I kept busy. I knuckled down and stuck to my meal plan and lost ten pounds (weighed this morning and down that tenth pound!)!
September goals:
1. Walk every day
2. Stick to the meal plan
3. log every bite
4. finish daycare projects
5. finish all training requirements
Mary-HOLY CAR TROUBLES!! Sending prayers and good vibes your way! That is a lot of vehicles in repair and needing repair! One at a time, they will all come together!
Beth- So glad to hear you are home! I think healing happens faster when we are in comfortable surroundings!
NY Karen- Thinking of you and all other teachers as you go back to school and get to know a new batch of kids and parents! Strength to you!
Lisa- I am hoping September brings you a little less time traveling and a little more time to focus on everything while you are home! So much easier to keep balls in the air when you are home, I think! Your nieces sound lovely! So thoughtful! Enjoy your time with them!
Jenny and Cookie - Welcome! Tell us a little about your journey! Come often and join in where you feel moved to do so!
I went to bed last night at about 9pm, didn't set my alarm because I didn't have to be awake at any specific time today. I slept in until 7:30 am! It felt sooooooo good! lol I heard Tim walk down the hallway a couple of times (between 6:30 and 7:30), checking on me to make sure I was alive, I guess. It has been about three weeks since I slept in like that. The past three weekends I have either had to work (up by 5:30) or had to get up to make sure DYS (Colin) was getting to work on time (5am).
I can hear thunder rumbling and it is a bit overcast this morning. Looks like I will be doing all of my indoor chores today. That means: grocery shopping, errands, meal prep, emptying the two entry way closets, cleaning them, removing hardware and spackling holes and turning the larger "family" closet into a daycare nook for boots, coats, backpacks, and turning the smaller closet into the family closet (which means the guys have to pick only a couple of coats to keep in there and a couple of pairs of shoes). I will probably just get the cleaning and spackling done today. If it is raining I will use the rest of the day to finish some required training and get my September/October calendars/newsletter finished and sent out to parents.
lol Just had a 30 minute pause in this post because I got a viber call from Lauren and Joaquin (DD and grandson). He is getting so big and so very busy! Chappie (the wonder dog) is much more interested in Joaquin now that he is more mobile. He is constantly following him and giving him doggie kisses (which Joaquin loves). Lauren and her hubby are spending part of this weekend getting rid of fire ants that have now entered the house! They have treated the yard, the perimeter of the outside of the house and are working on treating the inside perimeter.
Well, time marches on. I better get busy. Thunder still rumbling but no rain yet... ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

dandl1986- Don't be disappointed in a one pound loss! You also lost inches! If you are upping your exercise or strength training your loss may show in inches rather than pounds because muscle weighs more than fat! All good losses! Congrats! That is some hard work, right there!5

Hi Gals,
Ella (my dog) and I are back in gorgeous NW Washington for the winter. My Alaskan summer went quickly and I enjoyed. Came home with a left leg that's giving me pain. Doctor says a strain and will work out in time. I'm doing stretches but it is a "pain in the *kitten*" that at times has me limping along. Hard because I love to walk.
I lost 4 lbs while working in AK and my goal for September is not to gain weight. This will be a challenge because my husband enjoys cooking and I enjoy eating his cooking. :-)
So nice to see so many gals on the site here. I've thought of so many of you when I was out of internet contact this summer.

Thank you Barbie, I truly enjoy this group and have found it to be so helpful to me.
I did not have a very successful August, I lost 2.6 l s, but my goal was 5. The lack of walking due to all the smoke made this my least amount of miles since I started in mid April.
My September goals are to get back to regular walking. The rec centre opens again on Tuesday and I would like to get back to the pool a couple times a week as well.
My 50th is this month and I have lots going on and planned, I’ll keep tracking and counting and hope I’m at least to the mid 170’s in 30 days!
My MIL is being kept in hospital until Tuesday now, Monday she will be transferred to a bigger hospital for more tests.
So far, so good and she is where she needs to be.7 -
Barbie--I agree this is a new month and a new beginning. Thanks for keeping us going and I pray this month is healing for you also.
Blessings, Vicki GI NE4 -
Happy Saturday ladies!
Mary - wow, when it rains it pours. When are you planning on heading south?
Tracey - so much going on with moms and MIL's. That rapid weight loss is very troublesome for sure, considering her health issues.
Kelly - glad you were able to sleep in this morning. Good job on the weight loss....all of your projects you squeeze in when the kids aren't there are impressive. YOU are the energizer bunny! I love the idea of the kids having interaction with seniors and also teaching them gratitude. It reminded me of my mom and grandmother encouraging us to give to others and be kind to others when we were very small. That feeling made a good impression on my heart and I'm grateful they were caring in that way.
My September goals - which I recall were my August goals, are listed below. I actually am down about half a pound and my BMI is currently 23.5 which is perfectly fine with me:- Strength training 2 to 3 times a week.
- Walk an average of 6000 steps per day.
- Intermittent fasting- 16:8 several times a week. (16 hours between night meal and first meal next day)
- Keep carbs in the low/moderate range most days of the week. I discovered a few high-carb and sugar days now and then don't throw me off track. In fact, I often show a slight loss the next day unless I went heavy on the salt. I believe there's a physiological reason for this connected to our ancient ancestors who were able to glut on carbs when they were available, then eat sparsely, then eat fats and proteins for a few days, then maybe carb up again. I read somewhere that the fat-burning responds well to mini feast and famine days.
August was a good month in that I was able to explore a lot of "Skinny on Fat" authors and learn about the benefits of lower carbs (cutting way back on sugar and processed foods) and eating more healthy fats like olive oil, avocadoes, grass fed meats, etc.
Dr. Cate Shanahan's book "Deep Nutrition" made a lot of sense to me and her eating plan already matched mine pretty closely. Which is eating like my grandparents ate and they lived pretty long, healthy lives. Her website is drcate.com if anyone is interested.
Time to pump iron and pick apples and tomatoes. The deck guy is supposed to come today so we might be doing some staining this week as well if he can get it all finished this long weekend.

August 2018 Resolutions:
1. Log every bite and swallow. Done
2. Cardio exercise at least 3 days a week. Work on strength and stamina. Done. This was a combination of yoga, horseback riding and walking.
3. Have fun every day. I’ve found something fun or satisfying every day. It has been fun, too, the vast majority of days. Done
4. Drink at least 3 glasses of water a day. Done.
5. Monitor sleep. Average 7 or more hours of sleep nightly. Done
6. Avoid alcohol. 99% done. I have had a couple of sips of Cabarnet Sauvignon wine mixed into a full glass of sparking water while the kids were visiting.
My weight has held well, and my knee has been mostly pain-free. I count it a good month.
Yesterday I dropped DS, DDIL & DGS off at the Portland Airport for their trip home. I miss them already and look forward to the next time they are able to visit. DDIL had a great time at the conference she attended here and thinks she will want to participate every year. Yay!!! I hope it comes true.
My September resolutions look dramatically like my August resolutions.

Wendy - I just noticed a Facebook post by Tom Ryan, author of "Following Atticus" (he climbed a lot of mountains in New Hampshire with his mini schnauzers).
Evidently he had some really bad health issues several years ago, probably related to his obesity including kidney and heart and other organ failure.
So in the post today, he is announcing he has lost 35 lbs in 7 weeks and is feeling strong and healthy and ready to climb some mountains again. He attributes his weight loss and energy to cutting out processed foods and to the eating plan in Dr. Greger's "How Not to Die" book and cookbook.
I know you're a fan of Greger's books and thought you'd get a kick out of this. It sounds like it has literally saved Ryan's life.

Our Skype session with the grandchildren was as chaotic as usual! They spent most of it making silly faces at us with Bea shouting to be allowed her turn. Lovely to see them though and I like them to see us when we can't visit in person. Our next trip down there is Sept 23rd, which is Edie’s birthday. Of course, we had hoped to be moved by then.
They also want us to babysit the 10th and the 17th of October as the nanny is away. I said "as long as we aren't actually moving then"! !!!! If we haven't moved we might stay the night before so we can take the kids to school etc. It will just be Bea during the day. There is a chance we might be down there by then.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxx7 -

Hello ladies: Got DD to the airport this morning and she is now in Denver. She and her BF fly out this afternoon to Orange County. They are spending the night on the Queen Mary and taking the paranormal tour. I came home and took a nap. Starting my day at 4:30 am is not on my favorites list. Dson came over and got a piece down from our roof for Dish Network. We have gotten rid of them as every time we turned on the TV it said complete signal loss. We bought a new Roku TV with all sorts of apps to watch instead. We may eventually get an antenna to pull in local stations.
Pip - Enjoy your ride!
dandl1986 - Your horse dummie sounds interesting. I have trouble getting on as I have knee replacements and there is small instability in the left knee. Luckily I have a very patient horse, but some sort of dummie for practice and strengthening sounds like a good idea.
Wendy - A unicorn for you.
Everyone take care, Sue in WA

Sue in WA - Love your unicorn. I bet your daughter will have a lot of fun on that paranormal tour.
We have Roku and love it, and have a "leaf" antenna in the window which picks up a few local stations depending on the weather as we are quite a ways from the transmitter. PBS channels come in great and we love watching those when the internet goes out. Also, if you want local news, install the "NewsON" app if you haven't found it yet. Free news and weather from stations all over the Pacific Northwest, not just Seattle.

Lanette, I get annoyed when I watch news and the island is completely blank. I'm like, really? Are we are Mars or something? You could at least have one temperature in there somewhere!

Rebecca, we are kind of like that down here. When we had Dish or DirecTV, the only options were Seattle stations and they rarely mentioned any weather south of Olympia.
I depend on internet either the National Weather Service or Weather Underground when it decides to work, lol, for the weather predictions. The Weather Channel is pretty good and doesn't take forever to load.
How's the vertigo today?

My September goal is to start up with the Wii fit stuff again.
Today the WiiFit program got a tad upity with me:
I was able to be a tad smug tho, I did make progress in those 3000+ days off. LOL
Hope everyone has a great Labor Day weekend!

Evening ladies
I took a long nap and then did some housework ,then in jammies and watching 4 weddings.. hopefully tomorrow is more exciting..lol1 -
Soooo.....Time to prep for vacation!!!! Niece never showed up to work today, so nobody got called for done or estimates, but I got my inventory done! They will have to call the invoices on Tuesday. I figure if anyone wanted their mowers, they would have called. I got the parts orders all put in for Tuesday. The rest is up to them. This was a big step for me to leave things undone. I had to prioritize! Margarita, cooked pork chops for dinner, laundry going, relaxing for a while. Loved listening to the rain earlier. Put a damper on running a few places, but those will wait until tomorrow.
I need to get my active minutes in for today, finish laundry, and clean kitchen. I am so excited for the trip!
Have a great evening!
(((Hugs))) to everyone because they make everyone feel better!
Prayers for those with a need.
Congratulations to all the losses and NSV's!

Happy September! Thank you, Barbie, for getting us started. Hope your month sees you getting better and better.
Sue: I'm trying to figure out the logic of flying from Seattle to Denver to get to California...The paranormal tour on Q Mary sounds cool. Cute goat-i-corn.
Beth: Prayers for your son and you. You are so strong.
KJ: I could sure use you here for some quick painting and home improvement projects. Wish I had the same zeal you and Lisa have for getting hands dirty.
My handyman, Reuben is here getting some finishing touches on the mantel makeover. He has done all he can. Next phase will require me finding a cabinet maker to make a custom door and drawer. I'm loving the results thus far. But, it's going to be nice to have our Saturdays back. So much happening in my area around this time of year, and I want to get back in the swing of day trips and short excursions with DH. I read in the paper today that we could start to see much colder weather beginning the third week of September...oh my!
Intentions for September:
> Meditate and practice Reiki daily
> Yoga once a week in addition to regular cardio
> Do something fun outside of the house 1x per week
> Start on scanning family album #2
> Be lighter
Word for 2018 = Release
Stay well, friends. We can do this.

Hi Gals,
Beth – glad to hear surgery was able to happen.
Heather – this chain thing might convince me to rent if I lived in the UK…. What a nightmare!
Been reading, but not commenting as I seem to not have time for both - I am continuing to log and that will be my Sept goal to log ! I have been amazingly busy, both embroidery and gardening. I have also been trying to find time for my own yard, I got the opportunity to have a neighbor who had a day off – his company is slow right now- demolish my shed for me. So it’s down and cut up, the way it works here is that you can schedule 3 additional garbage pick up days each year, for bigger items – I took first available and that is Sept. 11 – so everything has to be boxed, bagged or bundled and at the edge of the street by 5am on the 11th, and is not supposed to be out until 24 hours before. I’ll be finding boxes and standing up boards and stuff in them. It was an old wooden shed that was really to large for what I needed and in very poor shape. He did the work and it was stuff I really could not do, as I do not own many power tools – a sawsall was what was needed. I started stacking today and will finish this week. Additionally the neighborhood cub scout troop (6-9 year old baby boy scouts) wanted to do a community project for a local senior. I sew their patches on the uniforms so they decided I’d be the one, they are tearing out an old wooden deck on Monday. As of Tuesday I have a ton more yard projects than I did before; as now the demolishing will be done.
The shed location will become a pond, and the deck location will become a flagstone patio. Yes I took before pictures – but it will be a while before you see after pictures!
