https://strava.com/athletes/milesfor_dennis If the link doesn't work, just search for him. "Miles for" is the first name, "Dennis" is the last name
Once you're connected as followers, tag him on the run you dedicated to him (under "edit activity". That's the "add a friend who didn't log" option.) Once we get the notification, one of the administrators can save it as a Dennis run. When we have everyone's runs logged, someone who is good at the fun mapping tools can come up with some visualizations for us This will work for the marathons people are doing in the future as well.
Administrators: How about @Orphia , @Elise4270 , @_nikkiwolf_ , others??? Basically we're accepting friend requests, then when we get notification that someone sent us a run, add it as Dennis' own with the name of the person in the title. I had to save the picture and manually add it to my own run.
@polskagirl01 Thanks so much for doing this!! Great idea to create a new account!!! @_nikkiwolf_
I've clicked Follow, so please request to follow me back, so I can add/tag Miles for Dennis to my marathon.

I've nearly finished the list of runners.
@marisap2010 You said you ran for Dennis at 11 am. How long for, and is that GMT on 14 Oct 2018?0 -
@orphia - I am pretty sure @7lenny7 was running a timed race (no specific distance) and @LaDispute57 is running a 50mi ultra. Hoping they are both doing well after all the miles!

3k easy for final preparation for tomorrow's 5k race. Now 98.5k for October.
I too tried out the running form hints proffered here. String in my head worked; nips and hips worked; but I could only keep that quarter clenched for a couple of strides before it fell out and had to be replaced.
Best of luck to all the racers this weekend!!
So i suppose I'll have to correct the kids that it's change fallen form runners hind quarters. (I don't know if what they call it is PC, so I'll omit it.) My humor is off. I wrote "shlt" in the log book friday. Cant wait for Monday so i can obliterate it before the boss sees it, if she hadnt already. I dont see it as bad.. but dh says i cant do that... hes probably right.
In December, can we sing "jingle buns"?6 -
Testing to see if I can say "*kitten*".4

The others don't move nearly as fast!1 -

10 miles on the Greenline, plus 3 walking. The running part felt really hard today - for some reason this 10 miles felt harder than the 13.1 last week - averaged 11:20 pace which is usually easy for us, never really out of breath, just very footsore and tired muscles. We got it done though, one more long run between now and our half, hopefully we'll be ready.
It is nice getting to go farther and see new places. We ran behind a church which was having some sort of musical event, and we ran past a restaurant/event venue which was having a wedding - we could see through the big picture windows and see the actual ceremony taking place - and we ran past some people working horses in a round pen. The weather was perfect again.
I continue to be shocked and amazed at my blood sugar after running longer distances. We ran the Greenline until we bumped into a major road and realized we had come out next to our favorite Vietnamese restaurant. So when we got back to our car we just had to drive over there and have a giant bowl of pho. I always ask them to put about half the usual amount of noodles plus extra vegetables, and they always smile and say they will and then the kitchen staff does exactly what they always do. Which is serve the same bowl the same way, no modifications. So usually I leave a giant mess of noodles after eating maybe a quarter of them, as many carbs as I estimate I can handle, and typically I misjudge and wind up with blood glucose levels about 150, which is higher than I like to go. So today I was starving, and I ate the whole bowl. And my glucose afterwards topped out at 102.
By the way, this restaurant has the honor of hosting a uniquely peculiar blues singer. He's a one man band, singing, percussion, guitar, and harmonica, and the first time I heard him I had my back to the stage and I honestly thought four different guys were warming up at the same time. He has the astonishing ability to play like four different people who have never met before and don't agree on what key they're supposed to be in. I love watching new people who have never heard him before as the full realization that this is really happening slowly dawns on their faces. Today a man tipped him, and he said he had been playing there five years. "Wow," said the guy. It was clear he couldn't think of anything else to say.
We had good luck at the REI garage sale this morning. My husband seems to have the same size feet they use for their displays, so he had his pick of dozens of new shoes with nothing wrong with them except no box. He ended up getting some Saucony Peregrines for about sixty bucks. And I got a pair of Salomon crossmax 4's which were a return with the note that the previous owner thought they felt like running in cleats. I agree, they do feel like cleats, so I plan to wear them on overgrown and nasty muddy trails.7 -

Erk, just had a thought. Not sure whether it would work where we have more than one runner in a slot, or overlapping.

Celebrated the fact it's not only Sunday but also 13 years ago today that I gave birth to the most awesome (if often frustratingly stubborn and strong-willed) person I know by getting up at 7am in the dark and doing the 10km Zombie Run Halloween virtual race. This was only the second time I'd run that far in one go (well ok run-walk, I've settled into a routine of run 9 minutes, walk 1 minute, unless I have less than 1km to go when the last walk is due in which case I tell myself to suck it up, bi@tch). Party food and only around 6 and a bit hours sleep meant I was slow and sluggish for the first 7km. It was very cloudy and looked like it was going to rain, but never actually did, meaning I was sweating buckets in my rainproof jacket. Probably should have taken that off, but running with something tied round my waist ignores me and my hands were full of phone and water bottle. (Plus, the jelly babies were in the pocket ;-) Last 3km I remembered it was a race, albeit a virtual one, and stepped on it enough to get my overall pace back to about what my HM target pace will be, shaving 1 minute 16 seconds off the time my first 10km run took me back on September 16th. I'll take it, but think it's gonna hurt tomorrow!
Next Sunday I have a little race (advertised as a 5km but looking at the official map it's 4.8km) that should be fun, then the Sunday after that we go up to 11km and so on.
A couple of times while running I remembered the thread from head and nips and hips tips. Attention span is short so I think the correct posture only lasted a few strides, but it did make me straighten up and become aware of the fact I was slumping. All stuff to work on!

@polskagirl01 good job on your 5K! Great set of goals for the racee, and love your motto!
@7lenny7 and @LaDispute57 hope your races went well! That is ALOT of running!5 -
The Spooktacular 5k went pretty well, except for my watch starting malfunction at the beginning due to operator error. The weather was not as bad as I feared; 37 degrees F with the occasional lake effect snowflake drifting by.
My goal was to be under 32 minutes; posted a personal best of 30:49.
Finished second in my age group and 18th overall.
Didn't see any quarters on the route...15 -

Mornings all. Monday here and a holiday, so no 530am run. Just having breakfast and will go out for 8ks in about an hr. Supposed to be doing 4x2k intervals but I hate speed training, and since I don't care about speed, I'm going for distance instead. And because I'm running in daylight, I going to do the hill which I usually only do on long run days.5

3.52 miles of recovery run this morning. Felt good mid to upper 40s, instead of running from shade to shade was heading from sun to sun. Shorts with long sleeve tech shirt under short sleeve fluorescent shirt. Still working on proper form since it was posted. Also working on getting Endomondo files translated to Strava.6

I'm also noticing that the times seem to be transferring in as whatever they were in the time zone where they were logged - I haven't figured out how to change them yet. Ideas, anyone?
But in other news, flyby is way too addicting. And if you're going to cheat, you should probably not post it to your public Strava account. https://labs.strava.com/flyby/viewer/#1913956986?c=u903vefx&z=D&t=1RTyHJ&a=eqoUckz9FHIG7h1qHPEZaie9GGprEBdq074Zaqh4cWp15T5tcpolaljTIGpl9y5q7bEVauG-P2pucm1rrotQajGComrSkhhqeYcbantYF2odVxpqYKkgatn8LWpy1R5qKu4paodtF2pGLZpqUVIYarNDH2o3wmJqysbWa4uPGGo72HVq-8AVavmyTmpeShdqaUYjalgTh2uEPzNroYInas7UTWqgbiJqpskWag
No, it is not physically possible that a 10:30-minute miler suddenly came up with a 2-minute mile in the last part of his half marathon, only to go back to his normal pace in time to finish. Which reminded me of a vague memory that I kind of think was near that part of the course, when some guys in a pickup truck had gone by, taunting runners by asking if we wanted a ride. Also, I'm the snail. This guy had to cheat in order to beat a snail.10 -

Today's notes – Today I had a real race experience. It was 36º F (2º C) at gun time, and the wind picked up a bit as we ran. But before that, I ran a course preview in milder wind, and and remembered to take pictures of a pretty course. Several course pictures behind the cut:
The sun came out two minutes before the gun, and I was standing there with singlet over running jacket over long sleeve tech shirt because the cloudy conditions during warmup convinced me I needed the jacket. Oh, well. Too late to change. It turned out I was fine, and I did need the light gloves. But I was okay with shorts, and the preview gave me confidence to wear spikes even though the map showed small parts of the course as being on the road. Those parts turned out to have spike-friendly shoulders.
The 3rd race in the Pete Glavin Upstate NY Cross Country series was a competition in several dimensions. It was an individual and team competition as a race, and part of an individual and team competition series. It was also the USATF Niagara Region masters cross country championship; as such, it is part of the USATF Niagara Runner of the Year series. I am not a factor in the USATF Niagara ROY series this year, and I did not expect to be on the age group podium for the race because cross country draws a tough field; but I had hopes of being on a winning team for this race.
For much of the race, I was competing with two other guys. One was a familiar face; Tim runs for my team in USATF national events, but he runs for Syracuse in the PG series. The other was a new face to me from Checkers AC (Buffalo based). I only knew about him because he passed me early, and we were wearing age group back tags. He looked like he might be in a younger age group, but that "60-64" back bib told me he was meaningful competition.
I spent much of the race trying to keep the new guy in sight. Tim passed me and I passed Tim a few times; I observed that Tim is a better technical and downhill runner than I am, but I have the edge in uphill running. I observed that I appear to be stronger than the field in general on the uphill; I adopted a strategy of keeping up as best I could on flat, downhill, and trail then challenging hills to pass people.
Tim flew past me on a short, steep downhill between 2 and 2.5 miles in. I passed him on the next incline, and that was the last time I saw him till the finish line. I gradually caught up to the new guy, and thought to myself that I needed to pass him on the final uphill. And I did; but there was a downhill finish, and he had a much better downhill finishing kick than I did. But trying to match his kick was probably a good thing; New Guy finished 3 seconds ahead of me, but Tim was only 2 seconds behind me. I didn't even know Tim was close until after we got done.
As things turned out, my team captain one the age group. New guy was second, and I was third. Score the chocolates! Thanks to having a guy recently age up to 60, my GVH Supervet team finished 1 point ahead of Syracuse for the win. Score the beer. The important bling was the Pete Glavin stuff, but we also won the USATF Niagara Supervet Team competition; that gave us cheap generic medals suitable for one photo op that we didn't even use.
So, cheap generic medal and the important awards behind the cut:
I don't do alcohol, and have typically avoided recreational beer runs. I see guys wearing shirts that say, "I run for beer," and that's just not me. But today, I can say that I run so my team mates can have beer.

The nerves have finally caught up with me but I also really need to get a full day of work in, and also we haven't gotten something we need for the house yet and might need to push back our closing date, and also I think we're going to have to put one of our dogs down next week - he's been in congestive heart failure for months and has hung on a lot longer than we expected, but his breathing is worse and his appetite is waning and I think it's time. Selfishly, I'm worried that my husband won't want to take me to the race tomorrow after all, but I don't want to bring that up until I have to. So yeah, pretty high anxiety right now. I can't wait to be on the road with nothing to worry about other than keeping one foot moving in front of the other. I *kitten* love running.
No trail shoes in my size at the sale this morning, but I did get a pair of heavy-duty leggings for $20 and a pair of Smartwool Marino tights for $25. Neither are strictly proper running gear, but at least I can wear the tights around town if they don't work as a base layer.
Wow! You have a lot going on other than your race! Good luck and have fun, at least!0 -
@MobyCarp - nice race and congrats on the age group award!
The plan for the weekend was to get my last long run in before my half next weekend. Yesterday, it was soccer and during the game the wind got stronger and stronger. It was forecasted to be 30-40mph winds so not sure what it got to, but I was glad our daughter’s game was changed to be an hour earlier. After getting home from that decided I would do the run after her swim meet on Sunday as it was less wind and the sun would be out. It was 45F and 15 mph based on Garmin, so made the right choice to wait until today. If I would have waited a little longer the wind looked like it would have been less, but I was ready to go and wanted to get it done. The second to last mile was full on wind, but thankfully the rest of it was either cross wind or blocked by trees. Knee twinge at the end, but I think was that was the constant change from the shoulder to road as traffic would go by. Longest run I’ve ever done, so excited about that!

This is correct fuel and hydration for a marathon, right? I mean, I'm open to advice here from all of you more experienced runners but I think champagne and fancy dark chocolate bars will serve me well. It seems a bit fussy to carry a champagne flute and have to pop a cork, but should make the last few miles fun!
If you do not like to run with a hydration belt, this hydration strategy might work well. It will solve you flute and cork problem...

I did some really nice restorative yoga this morning, walked the dog, and then had to work for a while. Running was put off until late afternoon and then it was feeling pretty bitter and cold so I headed to the gym for the treadmill. Babying myself

Hmm, could be a bit tricky. If you finish at 1pm and head out immediately it could work - we’re only 15-20 mins away. However, I’m only up for 6-7km... your call. Text me on 021 676 034 on the day if you like.
@ContraryMaryMary Hey yeah it's sounding pretty tough to fit in. If I remember the earlier you could get to town would be 930? Even only doing 7k that doesn't really give me enough time to have a shower before my meeting. Sigh. And won't likely to be leaving before 2pm. I'll txt you anyway, and can alway see what happens. A huge shame, I would have loved to go for a run with you!1 -
I got home today and am updating my ticker:
Thurs. - 9.84 miles in Oklahoma City. Had to cut short because I slept too much while driving down Wed. night / Thurs. morning and also had a nosebleed that made me stop for a few min.
Fri. - Sat. - 15.5 miles at the TX Hill Country Trail Ragnar (15.5 miles). It was a ton of fun as I normally run alone. The village was very very muddy, trails were not quite as bad. Many walking lanes in the village had mud where feet sink a foot deep on every step and standing still meant it was like a suction cup on my feet when trying to move again. Otherwise, they were relatively short loops of trails (3, 5, and 7.5 miles), so I gave it all I had. Average HR on the 3 and 5 were above my VO2 Max.
I arrived home today and plan to go for a recovery run on the treadmill while watching TWD (in about 1 hr.). But my miles for the week in total will not be as high as planned.

@midwesterner85 OMG! You likely drove right past us (US 35?). If I'd have known, would have waved!1
