Good luck to everyone racing this weekend!!
@7lenny7 - I will be following/stalking you as you progress!
@MegaMooseEsq - I have also used gummy bears on long runs and in races. I would suggest letting them melt/dissolve in your mouth a bit. That has worked well for me anyway to keep from getting an upset stomach, but then I tend toward stomach issues anyway.2 -
3k easy for final preparation for tomorrow's 5k race. Now 98.5k for October.
I too tried out the running form hints proffered here. String in my head worked; nips and hips worked; but I could only keep that quarter clenched for a couple of strides before it fell out and had to be replaced.
Best of luck to all the racers this weekend!!

Peachtree 15K was unexpectedly awesome.
The temp was on the warm side at 66, but it was cloudy. Didn't think I was really going to 'race' today, just was going to do a normal training run. But felt pretty good at the start and kept it going. About at the halfway point it started pouring rain, and it kept up for the reminder of the race.
My brother was on my shoulder for the entire race, then about 2 feet from the finish I pulled ahead and beat him by 1 second
I ended up getting 1st place in my AG, 17/107 males, 30/245 overall.
So quite pleased, and really unexpected.
Congrats to all those that raced this weekend!23 -

Nice AG place man and great results overall!
@7lenny7 just going to check on ya from time to time today, good luck.
@LaDispute57 will be pulling for you!
@garygse Absolutely *kitten* hilarious! Snickered out loud at that🤣.
Finally joined strava group, feel free to follow me if you so desire. Will work on translating run for Dennis over from Endomondo.
Good luck with tomorrow's race @MegaMooseEsq 🏃♀️💪!3 -
Just signed up for a 5 mile race on Thanksgiving day yay! Who came up with the idea of paying to run, imo they should be paying us! Anyways, super pumped! I’m debating signing up for a 10K the next weekend, but I guess we’ll have to see how I feel about it later.
Upcoming race:
Thanksgiving Day Feaster Five(Andover,MA)9 -
Thanks for the good wishes everybody! The nerves have finally caught up with me but I also really need to get a full day of work in, and also we haven't gotten something we need for the house yet and might need to push back our closing date, and also I think we're going to have to put one of our dogs down next week - he's been in congestive heart failure for months and has hung on a lot longer than we expected, but his breathing is worse and his appetite is waning and I think it's time. Selfishly, I'm worried that my husband won't want to take me to the race tomorrow after all, but I don't want to bring that up until I have to. So yeah, pretty high anxiety right now. I can't wait to be on the road with nothing to worry about other than keeping one foot moving in front of the other. I *kitten* love running.
No trail shoes in my size at the sale this morning, but I did get a pair of heavy-duty leggings for $20 and a pair of Smartwool Marino tights for $25. Neither are strictly proper running gear, but at least I can wear the tights around town if they don't work as a base layer.9 -
@7lenny7 - hope you are looping away well. Good luck!
@LaDispute57 good luck to you today!
@Scott6255 awesome job on the 15k! Congratulations on your 1st in AG finish! Wow! So happy for you.
@MegaMooseEsq good luck with your half tomorrow!
@polskagirl01 thanks for organizing the strava account for Miles for Dennis and approving my follow - I just linked my run.

I had such a nice run this morning. It was raining as I drove over, and there was a short burst while we were stretching, but then it cleared up. The weather was perfect for running after that, nice and cool and I felt great wearing a long-sleeved shirt that I was prepared to take off but never did. The group gave me a gift bag for my first marathon and sang the "happy first marathon" song (to the happy birthday tune). Everyone has been so supportive all season long and I was really touched by it all. I feel so lucky to have a great group of running friends, more than anything that running has brought to me, that is the best.
The run was very nice, lots of chatting and taking it easy. I got a lot of advice for what to do in the upcoming days and before, during, and after the marathon. Hopefully I remember most of it and don't just lose my mind out of nervousness.
I have a deep tissue massage scheduled this afternoon. The woman I see does an excellent job and I can't wait. Then - lots of relaxing.
Here's my goody bag from my friends/teammates:

@Scott6255 Congrats on a great race!

Congrats on signing up for your race!
As for being paid to run, it can be done...and I'm going to be sneaky again with this referral link: http://tinyurl.com/ya9jyqmk
I haven't been using it long, and so far they've paid me $20 (I'm close to getting my next $10). Basically, a little over two months of doing what I do anyway nets me $10...doesn't sound like much but it just paid for a new HRM strap.5 -
10/1-7 Totals: bike 20.4 km, run 15 km
10/8-14 Totals: bike 10.3 km, run 24.9 km

I got to race today! It was a beautiful day in the woods, and I met all of my goals: 1) Don't look at watch. 2) Don't try to go fast. 3) Have fun!!!
As a result I finished farther back than I was used to last season, but once I'm in better shape, I'll get back to competing with myself again. I am glad I was able to just enjoy the run today instead of worrying about who was passing me.
Upcoming races:
October 20: City Trail 5k
November 11: City Trail 5k
December 8: City Trail 5k
January 12: City Trail 5k
February 2-3: Lublin night 10k

One of my new mottos in life:
"Drop everything..."
"... and go for a run!"
I got some stuff at the race today... will post more over in the long distance runners group "bling report" thread14 -
@garygse Hilarious! I will never pick up a quarter so eagerly again. Thanks for the well wishes and sharing all that information. Your threshold zone change was quite interesting. I hope the new ones work great. You are already so fast, those little tweaks might make all the difference for you.
@workaholic_nurse Thank you!
@LaDispute57 and @7Lenny7 Hope you had/are having a great race!
@Scott6255 Woohoo! 1st place in AG is so awesome, especially since you didn't intend to "race." Congratulations!
@katharmonic You are so loved! How sweet of them. Enjoy your massage today.
@polskagirl01 Congratulations on your race! Those were perfect goals. And what a cute T-shirt (thanks for the translation).2 -
Still congested from this cold that's sticking around, but I had a much better run today despite forgetting kleenex. Did C25K Week 5 Day 3 again (20 mins run, 5 mins walk, 5 mins run). I have been a hermit these past few weeks, so I am excited to get out and see First Man at the Imax this afternoon and then out for dinner. I only go to the movies about once a year, so I hope it's a good one and I don't overdo it with the popcorn. Happy running to all!
1.97 miles = 13.53 / 25 miles5 -
I have been checking in on @7lenny7 occasionally and it looks like he is doing well and over 30miles!
@LaDispute57 - hope you are having a good run too!
@scott6255 - Fantastic!! 1st place AG win! Congratulations! Whoot! Whoot!
@katharmonic - what a wonderful idea and great friends to put it all together for you! Hope you enjoyed your massage!
@garygse - I am going to sign up even though I am not running at the moment. It looks pretty cool but makes me wonder how they pay for it - ads? providing info to others for analytics? Anyway I also sent it to my husband, hoping maybe it will incentivize him to get up and move more!
ETA - @polskagirl01 - love the t-shirt! Even better that you had a great race and enjoyed it so much!2 -

Today's notes – This morning's forecast called for a temperature around 48º F (9º C) with 60% chance of rain and 13-17 mph wind. I knew I'd be running slow, pacing 8:30 per mile, so I dressed a smidge warmer than I would have to run solo. Then the rain let up before we started running, and the sun came out. It was quite pleasant, and the very low dew point (I think in the 20s F) meant I didn't suffer from being overdressed.
There were two runners needing the 8:30 pace, for a route that was segregated as 7 miles + 6 miles. The first 7 went just as planned, came in at an average of 8:28 per mile according to Garmin (8:25 per Strava, which strips out non-moving time). As was the case two weeks ago, we took a rest room break between loops that was long enough to make recording two pieces seem appropriate. One of my runners was done at 7, the other continued.
On the second loop, the guy that continued started to drag. So I backed off, until I bottomed out at a 9:30 pace. I can't run any slower than that and hold good form, so we talked and he worked a bit harder. He perked up after waiting at some rather long stop lights, and we got through the run. Garmin had it at 8:53 per mile, Strava at 8:40.
Sigh. I like having people to run with, but I had to tell this guy he really belongs with the 9:00 pace group. Had a long discussion about marathons, not being able to get back energy you spend early, and why negative splits are a good thing for finishing healthy. Told him if he wanted a variable speed run, he would be better off running slow for 15 miles then quicker for 3, than running quicker for 10 miles then slower for 8. Don't know how much he internalized, but at least he should have some sound track to play back to make sense of his own experience.
Chances are I won't hear a report of how his first marathon goes. That's too bad; I'd really like to hear how he does when he gets there.
While I was pacing 8:30 and slower, the 9th race of the 12 race Rochester Runner of the Year Series was held across town. I didn't have to run that one, because my series standing did not depend on anything I did for the remainder of the series, which is scored based on a runner's best 6 results. It took several hours for the results to get posted online, but I had to look. The one guy who could pass my point total for the age group didn't show up, so I clinched my age group for the RROY series. I could have won my age group in today's 5K by just running an ordinary 5K race; but that didn't matter. The only thing that mattered for my series standing was who else showed up, and that worked out in my favor.
I'm also thinking that 13 slow miles today is better than a 5K warmup plus a 5K race today, before tomorrow's 6K cross country race. The competition there will be serious, and I'd like to perform respectably within a tough field.

@biketheworld - I would see if your grandkids and kids would run with you now if the grandkids are old enough, and make the memories with them. One of the best running memories I have, so far, is when my daughter (non-runner) trained w/o telling me and surprised me by registering to run the 1st Half of the SF marathon the first time I ran it. I was so excited to run the GG bridge and it was incredibly special having her there with me. She joined me this last summer again to run the 2nd Half too!
What a wonderful surprise! I LOVE LOVE LOVE that your daughter surprised you! I have run a couple halfs with my daughters - San Antonio, Louisville, Hoover Dam. They were all XC runners in high school. I invited them to come to Sedona with me, but they all have small children (I have 7 grandkids and the oldest is in kindergarten!), plus jobs, and money is tight. Hopefully in a few years they'll be able to come with me again.
I'll have to finish getting caught up later tonight. The wind is howling, sleet, rain, hail. Sounds like a perfect afternoon to bake some banana bread. I don't know whether to laugh or cry for all 82,000 people who have tickets to Garth Brooks at Notre Dame tonight. Sheesh what horrible weather for an outdoor concert!
June goal - 44/44
July goal - 52/52
August goal - 55/57 miles

Another workout with no pain at the end. At least, no pain that felt different. I woke up sore this morning after being pain-free most of the day yesterday. I suspect I taped up a bit too tight yesterday. That's what it felt like as I felt better once I removed the tape. Running didn't hurt, and now afterwards I just have some mild niggling pain that should be gone by my next run day.
I also increased my running distance slightly, adding one more interval. I had negative splits due to terrain. Garmin thought my heartrate was a bit high and that I was dying but I suspect it was due to more caffeine than usual today as my run felt fine.
I do have some weird pain in my healthy foot (center of heel) that seems to be exacerbated somewhat by my PT exercises. I think it's PF as I've had a bit of weight gain and the last time my weight was up around this point I was struggling with PF.

Congrats to all those that raced this weekend!

From time to time y'all mention these other threads... I can not really keep up with just this thread! LOL I do not know how you do it!

@MobyCarp - I feel like I have read that exact run report from you a few times now about runners that go too fast and need to learn to slow down and all that. Your patience to keep repeating the same teaching over and over is remarkable. You sir are a good man for sure.4

That is actually the optimum temperature for running, in general for all runners. I think 55 is the exact target, but I am not sure on that memory, just know it is "50s" Well unless you are @Elise4270, then the optimum temperature is more around 12 or 13 degrees, but eh, can never please everyone.

This is correct fuel and hydration for a marathon, right? I mean, I'm open to advice here from all of you more experienced runners but I think champagne and fancy dark chocolate bars will serve me well. It seems a bit fussy to carry a champagne flute and have to pop a cork, but should make the last few miles fun!

That is actually the optimum temperature for running, in general for all runners. I think 55 is the exact target, but I am not sure on that memory, just know it is "50s" Well unless you are @Elise4270, then the optimum temperature is more around 12 or 13 degrees, but eh, can never please everyone.
It does not get 12-13F here haha!3 -

This is correct fuel and hydration for a marathon, right? I mean, I'm open to advice here from all of you more experienced runners but I think champagne and fancy dark chocolate bars will serve me well. It seems a bit fussy to carry a champagne flute and have to pop a cork, but should make the last few miles fun!
Hmm, you might need a second bottle that one looks a bit small to make it.6 -
