October 2018 Monthly Running Challenge

Another thing to factor in for years of improvement or peak age, is how your goals change. For 2 years I steady improved my 5k time. Then my main focus turned to ultra distances and I worked on endurance more than speed and haven't had a 5k PR since.
This year I'm running less, maybe 4 days per week. Because last winter I was busy learning to ski, I started to do indoor climbing once per week, and I finally managed to follow through on my good intentions and do strength training at least 3 times per week. Yesterday I ran a 5k virtual race, and it took me 28:42 to finish. But I don't think it means that I am too old to improve as a runner - I'm pretty sure if I dedicate more time and effort to running again, the 5k time will get better again.
@garygse Happy birthday
@Orphia Thank you for the great post about the memorial runs for Dennis
@mbaker566 Great 5k, congratulations!!
@Elise4270 You've already got experience in starting the challenge thread now. I have full confidence that you can open a great thread for November too
@rheddmobile I guess it depends on how strict the race is about having the bib visible at all times. In one race I started in a shirt with the bib pinned to it, put my rain jacket on on top when it started raining, and just opened the jacket to show the bib after crossing the finish line. Of course, then you can't find official photos of yourself by bib number, but it's not like I'm going to buy them anyway.
Or if the race is long enough: in both marathons I did so far I was wearing my own hydration pack. I fixed the bib to the straps on my chest. That means I would have had to unclip one side if I had wanted to take of the pack, but that would not cause a lot of trouble.
@katharmonic AWESOME, congratulations!! Enjoy some well-earned rest now. .... maybe use that rest time to look at marathon races for 2019?
@Teerai You've made a huge progress this month, great job!

Crazy busy weekend-son’s football game, birthday parties, work parties, Fall festivals, Church picnics... I need a weekend for my weekend!!
I woke up with a terrible headache this morning, which I’m attributing to the crappy eating and lack of staying hydrated from the weekend.
I felt better after some coffee and water. I finished my intervals though a bit slow. At least I finished

You guys. I ran a marathon today. I still can't believe it, but I certainly FELT it. On the good side - it was a perfect running weather day, after yesterday was miserably cold, rainy and windy we were so lucky to have a good cool and dry day. On the bad side, I was not at all impressed with the logistics of this race. We took a shuttle bus to the start from close to where we were staying (which was why we picked staying there). When we arrived, the line was huge. There were a lot of buses but they loaded them one at a time, very inefficiently. And then people started just showing up and getting on a bus, when there were hundreds of people waiting in line. It was so frustrating, and finally we cut in on a bus line ourselves in fear of never making it. We got to the start about 20 minutes late and were not last by a long shot. So it was not a great start, and I couldn't line up with a pacer or in an appropriate time grouping as it was already moving.
The race was so crowded that it was hard to navigate and to get a pace going. It remained pretty packed, and hardly thinned out the whole time. So many people were walking or walk/running, it was really hard. I felt pretty good through the first half and had to keep reminding myself to not push the pace too much. I saw my friend/one of our coaches on the blue mile, mile 12 where they honor the fallen, and gave her a hug. But didn't manage to see many of the others I knew in the race or spectating, it was just too crowded. About 15 miles in, my legs were tired and I wanted to be done. At 20 miles I really wanted to be done. I gathered a bit of energy from thinking of how now I was running farther than I ever had before, but it was rough. My legs and feet really hurt. And the last bits were through some places with no crowd support so that was tough. About mile 23 I knew I could finish but it was tough to embrace the suck on that. Finally the finish was in sight - but it was uphill right at the end which was a cruel thing to do. I made it across and then had to hobble along with everyone for quite a while to get through the finish area and out to the bag check and meet-up areas. The walk to get my bag was so long and I was freezing. Fortunately they gave us these paper jackets which were very helpful. Once I got my bag and took off my shoes I found I had the hugest blood blister on the side of my foot - no wonder that hurt - so I made my way to the medical tent and they pronounced it "impressive" and drained and bandaged it.
Overall, I'm really happy with how it went. My goals were to a) to finish b) finish under 5 hours and c) finish between 4:30 and 4:45 as a reach goal. I was close, and ended up with 4:47, which was a 10:57 average pace. Mile 6 was my fastest (some downhills) and mile 20 was my slowest. I think I did what I could do. I completed a marathon!
My legs are sore, I'm exhausted, but I'm happy. And I never want to do that again
@katharmonic Bravo, marathon runner!!!
Fantastic race report, and terrific time for your first!! I'm slightly jealous!
That kerfuffle with the buses would have been stressful. I'd be thinking "My bladder is filling every minute we stand here!!!"3 -
Morning all. I got out this morning despite the fact its blowing an absolute gale! The headwind coming back was awful. I felt like I was standing still. Still I beat the storm, just as I was coming to my back door I heard thunder in the distance. 10 minutes later it went pitch black and the heavens opened up.
Today was a gentle tempo, trying to keep to around 6 min/km. I'm not very good at that lol.9 -

Those are ugly shoes. I wouldn't trust them not to break during a run1 -

@katharmonic way to go!!! Great report! So which one are you signing up for next ?
@eleanorhawkins I'd save the gels for a long run of 90 minutes or more. During a long run when you deplete your glycogen, your blood supply to your stomach is decreased so it can provide more oxygen to muscles. That's the point where it's worthwhile to test fueling for long runs. When I train for a marathon I'd start testing fueling during my 4 or 5 longest runs. If you really want to find out what you can handle, you'd not only see what you can tolerate, but how much. I can ingest about 250 calories per hour with no issues. When I get back to long runs again, I want to test 300 cals/hour. With less blood to take the nutrients from your food, it tends to sit in your gut and that's when you can get upset stomach, and that will tell you just how much you can handle. Of course, different race day conditions such as higher heat will change it all, since your blood likes to be next to your skin when you're hot to help cool off the body. TLDR: Don't bother with gels with a 7k unless you're just curious what they taste like and want to test the logistics of eating one during a run.

@7lenny7 thanks, that was pretty much what I was assuming, it was more a case of it would be handy to be the other side of the wall from the bathroom as I fear my stomach won't approve :-/ I'm REALLY hoping I don't have to spend more than 90 minutes running on my treadmill. Apart from the fact it automatically switches off at 100 minutes, that must be so horrifically tedious......
I will most probably stick to my tried and trusted jelly babies. Can't remember what the expiry date is on the gels, we're doing a hiking holiday at Easter which will have us walking 5-6 hours a day, maybe they'll come in handy then (slower speed and plenty of bushes in case of emergencies lol)

@katharmonic Respect! I'm still debating whether to bite the bullet and train for a marathon. I've got five halfs under my belt and have always said that's as far as I'm willing to go, but there's a little nagging voice in my head trying to persuade me to go for the full 26.2.15

I ran 3.4 miles today at lunch. I spent a lot of yesterday evening checking the weather and debating about whether I should run today or not. Monday's are usually rest days, but Wednesday is supposed to be rainy/stormy. I will run if it is just rain, but not if there are thunderstorms. The forecast is saying thunderstorms in the morning. And since Wednesday is the last day of the month I will be busy at work and won't have time to run at lunch if it is bad in the morning and better at lunch. But I also like to have a rest after my long run and since I ran 8 miles yesterday I decided to not run and so I slept a little later and just did yoga this morning. But I was feeling so grumpy about my decision, plus some other stuff that was stressing me out that I decided I needed to run. So I ran at lunch and I'm glad I did. It was a little warm at 77F, but there was a bit of a breeze and it was really pretty out so it wasn't too bad. Plus now I am only 5 miles short of my monthly goal and I should be able to get that in the morning and I can at least stop stressing about whether it will rain or not on Wednesday.

4 miles on trails, trying to shift from being an evening runner to a morning runner for the last couple of runs before my early morning race. Ugh, I am not a morning person! But it was beautiful. We watched the dew burning off the fields as we drove out to the lake.
Thanks everyone who commented on race bib arrangement! I think if I have to wear layers I'm going to use my Nathan pouch belt as a bib belt. I'm holding out hope that it won't rain and I can just run in long sleeves. The forecast right now is sunny but cold, couched between two days of rain, and I know from experience our weather is bad at predicting when it's going to rain within a 48 hr time frame.
If I had it to do over I would definitely have given myself more time to prepare for a half. This was a spontaneous last minute decision, and while I think I'm going to get away with upping my mileage too fast, my husband is having hip pain which seems like a piriformis thing. Going from a 6 mile long run to 10 miles is pretty hard on old joints. He says he's good to keep going and is just sore, not actually injured. Hopefully he's right.7 -

And @BruinsGal_91, after my success on Sunday, for the first time ever, I’m wondering if I should do a full...

@katharmonic congratulations. I was so wrapped up in my own event I forgot to give you kudos for yours. It sounded particularly gruelling. Well done for finishing. And all the best for your next one...7

@katharmonic WOOOHOOOOO lady! GREAT JOB !
@rheddmobile You've got this!
3.21 of recovery run today. Hips felt super tight at the beginning but loosened up as I went. Last run of the month on Wednesday...

DO IT! 51 weeks is PLENTY of time. Start the 1/2 marathon training now, and run one (even if it is just on your own) and you will be ready to start the full with time to spare.5 -
You guys are all so wonderful and terrible. Thank you all so much for the comments - even the ones encouraging me to run more. I still love you.
I'm sorry I didn't mention in my race recap that it was the Marine Corps Marathon! Like you all should remember. Anyway, I wanted to share a few pics.
This collage is me before (pink long sleeve) and after the race. With a photo of the foot draining (not graphic) and my nice medical tent physician.
Then the actual blood blister if anyone likes to see that kind of thing WARNING - MIGHT BE GROSS
Here's the bling. The shirt was the single ugliest shirt I've ever seen. It's a mock turtleneck and it has actual photos of faces all over it. LOL. It was quite a topic of conversation (it's actually quite comfortable though and might be nice as a winter layer). We joked that they made the shirt so ugly to encourage sales of their official Brooks MCM apparel. It worked on me. The medal I also did not really love. It's big and heavy, but it looks cheap because it's painted solid red and it seems like fine detail was lost. The front part opens to reveal a removable gold coin that is held in with a magnet. That's kind of cool but I wish the outside was metallic rather than this plastic-looking red. We also got a throw-away paper jacket thing after the finish. Someday that might come in handy.
My legs are angry with me. Six hours in the car today did not help. I took a nice soak a while ago and I will head to bed after a big glass of wine and some ibuprofen.
Thanks again, all for your congratulations and support.

@katharmonic Congrats on your first marathon! You say you never want to do that again...now I'm not a gambling man, but I have a wager I would like to make, lol.
@Orphia Great write-up for Dennis!
Thanks for the birthday wishes, I had a great day that involved too much pizza, cheesecake, and cupcakes!

I thought I'd just check my schedule for next year to see when I have events... Seems I've entered more than a few already! Two half marathons already entered, one definitely to enter (as soon as entries open) and another on the radar... Something happened to my 'two halfs a year' thing. And then there's the Xterra Series that I don't have 2019 dates for yet.
I blame you.
All of you!

I increased my distance yesterday from 8 run/walk intervals to 10 run/walk intervals. No pain and minimal sensation during or immediately after. Mild stiffness this morning that I didn't notice by lunch.
This week I'm increasing the short run intervals to 9x and long run to 12x, after which I'm going to move away from intervals with the help of my running coach. At least, that's the plan for November!
I think I'm just about healed up and at the point where I'm more concerned with rebuilding my aerobic base.
Which means it's time to sign up for a race... right?15 -
2 miles treadmill tonight.

And @BruinsGal_91, after my success on Sunday, for the first time ever, I’m wondering if I should do a full...
Runners are such enablers - not just this lot on MFP either, they’re all equally mad!!!
Oops I worded that wrong. Definitely doing the Auckland half, contemplating doing the full. That's the almost made up my mind bit bahaha
I ran my first marathon just shy of having run for a year. If you're dedicated to it and don't push it too hard (train smart) , you can do it6 -

@katharmonic Congrats on your first marathon! You say you never want to do that again...now I'm not a gambling man, but I have a wager I would like to make, lol.
@Orphia Great write-up for Dennis!
Thanks for the birthday wishes, I had a great day that involved too much pizza, cheesecake, and cupcakes!
Today's run was an easy-paced recovery run with some tempo sections to try and compensate for all the pizza, cheesecake, and cupcakes.

No run today. Spent the time formatting my next book to release. Still waiting on the artwork once I have that I can release this one and put it behind me. Waiting on creative types to get things done is an exercise in extreme patience. One I am really struggling with right now...
Tomorrow weather looks good for a run and if things go well I should have a solid 2 hours to get a decent run in.5 -

I sent the MFP Community staff a report to ask how to make MFP HQ aware of our Run for Dennis.
I got this reply from a Community staff member:
"Just wanted to let you know that Staff has seen the report about the tribute relay you posted. We have gone ahead and forwarded it along. Also for the sake of privacy I did edit out Dennis's last name but left everything else as it was.
"It makes the community team very happy to see users coming together to support and motivate each other. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Have a great week! "
Isn't that lovely?!20 -

I've got five halfs under my belt and have always said that's as far as I'm willing to go, but there's a little nagging voice in my head trying to persuade me to go for the full 26.2.

DO IT! 51 weeks is PLENTY of time. Start the 1/2 marathon training now, and run one (even if it is just on your own) and you will be ready to start the full with time to spare.
LOL I think you forgot who you replied to. My first half is I. 2.5weeks, been training for 3 months now, so definitely ready to kick into it, and going to do another half in March, then July, so October for my first marathon fits well...
You guys are all definitely enablers. Of the best kind bahaha.
