Some more great race reports coming in, great work folks!
Happy birthday @garygse!
Another thing to factor in for years of improvement or peak age, is how your goals change. For 2 years I steady improved my 5k time. Then my main focus turned to ultra distances and I worked on endurance more than speed and haven't had a 5k PR since.
I still race a couple of 5ks per year and still hope to get a PR from time to time but as long as I progress to greater and greater distances, I'm not down on myself for not improving short distance paces.8 -
0.4 miles today. On crutches. Visiting with neighbors killed my pace. No matter. It was great to be outside and moving. It wasn't running but I'm counting it as such.

You guys. I ran a marathon today. I still can't believe it, but I certainly FELT it. On the good side - it was a perfect running weather day, after yesterday was miserably cold, rainy and windy we were so lucky to have a good cool and dry day. On the bad side, I was not at all impressed with the logistics of this race. We took a shuttle bus to the start from close to where we were staying (which was why we picked staying there). When we arrived, the line was huge. There were a lot of buses but they loaded them one at a time, very inefficiently. And then people started just showing up and getting on a bus, when there were hundreds of people waiting in line. It was so frustrating, and finally we cut in on a bus line ourselves in fear of never making it. We got to the start about 20 minutes late and were not last by a long shot. So it was not a great start, and I couldn't line up with a pacer or in an appropriate time grouping as it was already moving.
The race was so crowded that it was hard to navigate and to get a pace going. It remained pretty packed, and hardly thinned out the whole time. So many people were walking or walk/running, it was really hard. I felt pretty good through the first half and had to keep reminding myself to not push the pace too much. I saw my friend/one of our coaches on the blue mile, mile 12 where they honor the fallen, and gave her a hug. But didn't manage to see many of the others I knew in the race or spectating, it was just too crowded. About 15 miles in, my legs were tired and I wanted to be done. At 20 miles I really wanted to be done. I gathered a bit of energy from thinking of how now I was running farther than I ever had before, but it was rough. My legs and feet really hurt. And the last bits were through some places with no crowd support so that was tough. About mile 23 I knew I could finish but it was tough to embrace the suck on that. Finally the finish was in sight - but it was uphill right at the end which was a cruel thing to do. I made it across and then had to hobble along with everyone for quite a while to get through the finish area and out to the bag check and meet-up areas. The walk to get my bag was so long and I was freezing. Fortunately they gave us these paper jackets which were very helpful. Once I got my bag and took off my shoes I found I had the hugest blood blister on the side of my foot - no wonder that hurt - so I made my way to the medical tent and they pronounced it "impressive" and drained and bandaged it.
Overall, I'm really happy with how it went. My goals were to a) to finish b) finish under 5 hours and c) finish between 4:30 and 4:45 as a reach goal. I was close, and ended up with 4:47, which was a 10:57 average pace. Mile 6 was my fastest (some downhills) and mile 20 was my slowest. I think I did what I could do. I completed a marathon!
My legs are sore, I'm exhausted, but I'm happy. And I never want to do that again

Congratulations @katharmonic!2

Yesterday: 6.0 mile run, then 2.09 mile run.
Today: 3.75 miles treadmill. Very slow.
I feel so detrained so quickly. I got to get it back before my marathon in only 3 weeks.

Yeah, this. I can not imagine a race where I am taking my bottoms off after I start, but I do add/remove tops as needed.
I do see runners using special bib belts, but to me, that is just one more thing to remember/keep track of and I already fail with my current list!
Guys check this out
@katharmonic CONGRATS!!! What an awesome achievement.2 -

Felt awesome, no ankle pain during or after (so far, who knows about tomorrow). Kept a good pace too. I only even had that 'tight' awareness of my ankle once when there was a bit of an elevation change. When I first started running again that feeling was constant. Maybe I'm finally healing?
Next short run I increase to 9 intervals, and will do 12 for next weekend long run unless coach or ankle say otherwise.
It was 0C tonight. Wore a long-sleeved cheap not-quite tech shirt, blue fleece jacket, and UA baselayer 3.0 since prior to tonight they still had the tags on. I don't like these baselayer tights as I feel the rise is too low. Meh. Temperature was good throughout the run though. Stomach a bit cold where the tights slipped down but the shirt was long in front so it wasn't too bad.
I ran along Halloween Alley again. I'll have to go for a walk there tomorrow or even Tuesday and get some good pictures. The street is about 1km long and I'd say 85% of the homes are decorated excessively for Halloween.

@katharmonic That's amazing, you're amazing! Not only did you just do something the vast majority of people will never bother to try let alone successfully achieve, you managed to pick up something 'impressive' along the way!
Very well done, now get some rest ;-)

@katharmonic woo hoo well done, so brilliant!3

Made the hundred mile club with a couple days to spare thanks to awesome fall weather!
Just noting 20% of my annual total was last month.
Wanna thank this group for being a great place to nurture my inner running bug. Lol

Yeh, yeh... if I had a dollar for how many times I've heard that in this group!
Seriously though, Big time Kudos!
Pretty awesome watching you work this year to get here.
Very cool!5 -
@katharmonic you are my hero! You did amazing! I felt every grueling step with you. I can so see myself feeling all that in a few months. My hat is off to you! Great, great job!!4

I appear to have reached the point where even the prospect of not running makes me grumpy. We have been given warning of 'orange' weather alerts for heavy rain and strong wind tomorrow and I'm already cussing at the thought of having to stick to the treadmill. Having said that, if I have no choice I may take the chance to experiment within easy reach of a bathroom and see what my stomach thinks of gels. Have a multi-pack that's been in the cupboard for ages that I bought on offer to try out but never dared. I'm only due to do 7km tomorrow though, so it would definitely be a case of testing my stomach rather than for real fuelling purposes..... thoughts?5

rheddmobile wrote: »I need advice! What's the best approach to bib placement when planning to remove layers? Also, has anyone tried race dots, bib boards, or similar, and what did you think?
I don't want to put holes in my waterproof jacket, and it looks likely that the predicted temp during my race will climb from the high 30s to the mid 50s. I don't run fast enough to stay warm at 37, but I'll probably be toasty at 55 after a half. I love my new jacket which has vents and was planning to wear it closed, then open over a shirt, but a bib will keep me from zipping/unzipping the front vents or wearing the jacket open.
I have a bib-belt that you can attach the bib to, but have also attached a bib to the strap of a small "bum-bag" I sometimes wear.3 -

Maybe it was the great weather (61F, light wind). Maybe it was the super slow warm-up mile. Maybe it was the old bluetooth headphones I pulled out that I haven't used in over a year. Maybe it was the fact I didn't hurt. Probably it was the inspiration gleaned from @katharmonic's first marathon race report. But this 5 mile run this morning felt really good. The more I relaxed and just ran the better I felt, and the faster I got. I had little desire to get out and run this morning. But as soon as I stepped outside and felt that cool air, my mood changed and I by the end of the run, I didn't want to stop.
Running is so weird.18 -
First half marathon in the books!!

@katharmonic Congratulations and well done!!!! Talk about overcoming some obstacles and persevering!
Just another mundane 7k today in the cold, wind, and rain. Thank goodness for tomorrow's scheduled rest day. If I then do my scheduled 7k on Wednesday, that will give me 165k (or 102.3 miles) for the month. Honestly didn't think I had it in me.
I've been following the improvement posts with great interest. After having taken 23 years of rest, picked up running again at age 65. Started timing in June 2018; first test 5k was 35:35. Last 5k race on 10/21 was 30:49. Still think there is room for improvement; just how much improvement is a mystery that, as @MobyCarp pointed out, will only appear in the rear-view mirror.5 -

You ran your first marathon in a big, logistically challenging venue (Marine Corps?). Congratulations!
And you never want to do that again . . . a normal reaction. I swore all the way from the 24 mile aid station to the finish line that Boston 2017 was going to be my last marathon. Two marathons later, I feel a bit differently.
After the hurt goes away, and you think about things you might do better with the experience of your first marathon to draw on, I'd recommend picking a smaller race with less challenging logistics. Wineglass was really good with being able to park near the finish/bus pickup, and it wasn't so big that the crowds were a problem. Also, they started the half 30 minutes before the full, so there was no issue with being blocked by packs of slow half participants. And I believe Wineglass would be within driving distance for you; you'd need one, maybe two nights in a hotel.4 -
@shanaber
I've met Gene D (full name *kittened* out by MFP) at a USATF event. I'm talented; he's a machine. He says he started running at age 58, and has had a PR at one distance or another every year since then. Yes, it can be done; no, most people won't be able to do it.
I am not the kind of guy who would run a sub-3 hour Boston then turn around and 13 days later run a 38 minute 10K at the USATF Masters 10K Championship. Gene D did that at age 70; I didn't push the 10K because I wanted to stay uninjured more than I wanted to put my team on the podium.
While I believe it would be physically possible for me to develop to the point of running a sub-3 hour marathon, I'm not going to try to do that. Doing what is needed to accomplish that would carry a higher risk of injury than I am willing to accept. I'm content with sub-3:30 marathons, and I might break 3:15 some time if my conditioning, the course, and the weather all line up perfectly.7 -
Completed C25K W5D1 this morning. As I have the day off, I waited until it was almost light out before we left. We also went a different route because I a) was concerned traffic would be higher on our usual 'busy' roads and b) thought we might need a little longer route. Both were true. I missed the first cue to run so walked almost twice as long for the warmup and had to figure out how to 'rewind' the app. In the middle of the first AND second interval, there was a fenced dog that wound up mine (one can be reactive to other barkers) so that was fun. I thought I'd missed the first walking cue and was just about to check when it said to start walking. The last one was perfect timing as well. I could have kept going in the middle though, so I'm actually looking forward to next Monday's schedule which has a longer middle interval.
I was going to figure out how to put the next few C25K workouts into Runkeeper and use that for cues, but I just realized there are only 3 more runs with intervals!7 -
@katharmonic - congratulations! Laughed at your "I never want to do that again...!"
I don't know what's going on in Florida but the weather has been amazing the past few days! Finally got a bike ride in on Saturday and I should be home most of November so will get more rides in! But at least my running is improving since I couldn't cycle as much!
And now I am debating internally... will I do the RunWorldRunStreak from Thanksgiving to Christmas again!? I think I've done it for 3 years. Yeah, probably so. Unless it gets too hot in December, then it's just no fun!
