@martaindale Oh! Rock climbing sounds like fun! Except for the whole “being up high” thing. I am terrified of heights.
I'm terrified of heights too, and it really slows me down when running trails! A friend says she's all but cured her acrophobia after getting into rock climbing. Now y'all got me itchy.

Re: running in the dark:
for me it depends on where I go running. I have a cheap copy of the Nox vest for being seen, but it conflicts with my chest lamp, so I cannot use it on runs where I need a light to see something myself.
On those runs, usually I thake my chest lamp (which also has a blinking red light on the battery pack on my back), but if I switch it on or not depends on where along my route I am.
Yesterday, I ran through a little forest. Here's a comparision without/with chest light:
The little bright spot on the distance is a road; I was taking the picture running towards it so that it wouldn't be completely black and you'd think my camera was broken ^^
Not using a light would be beyond stupid, because then it's just pitch black and I wouldn't see a thing.
There is another path which is out in the open across some fields. Early enough in the evening, the sky shine from neighbouring villages provides enough light that I can make out the path if my eyes adjust to the dark. Then I sometimes run without lights, cause it's fun When I see a light from another runner/dog walker/cyclist in the distance, I switch on my light to avoid giving them a heart attack, but often I have the path to myself.
Places that I might have to share with cars are another story. Two roads I ran along last night:
In the left one I had my lights on - the light in that alley is not terribly good, and there are no sidewalks. On the right picture I didn't use my light, since there's lots of street light and lit shop windows, and I'm separated from the road by a wall of parked cars.
I guess I could leave the lights on all the time, but I don't really like the way the light cone bounces around when I'm running, so I only switch it on when necessary.

@shanaber RE: Flipbelt crops
I like them! I was worried they were going to fall down with water and my phone stuck in the waistband. They stayed up like a champ. Nothing fell out. Plus, it was more comfortable than my Nathan hydration belt. The water bottles don’t hold that much water but that won’t be a huge issue until the summer heat hits. If I wasn’t broke from race entry fees and Christmas, I would buy another pair.
December goal miles = 150 / 91 miles to date
Upcoming Races:
1/26/19 = Miami Tropical 5K
1/27/19 = Miami Marathon

4/6/19 = Wanderlust half
5/4/19 = Wisconsin Marathon (mittens challenge part 1)

Thanks @amymoreorless! I will try a pair. I have several pairs of the Lucy capris with the thigh pockets that I love but when the sold out to NorthFace they apparently discontinued all of them even though they were supposedly keeping some of the styles. So now I am looking for alternatives. I do like Oiselle but they are so expensive and rarely have sales.
I saw this in RW and had to post it... this 70 yo runner not only broke his AG Marathon record that had stood for 14 years he also just as amazingly, two weeks prior, ran a 50k on a Saturday and the CIM the next day!

My son is a rock climber. He is home from college for the Christmas break. We climb together whenever he is home. It is a full body workout and I find muscles that I forgot existed each time we go. I was so sore the day after! I never think about going alone, maybe I will do it a few times and surprise him with my improvement for next time he is home.
On the subject of cross training, I love lifting and cross training! I do a cardio kickboxing class twice a week, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at least once a week and work with a trainer on Mondays and Fridays. I find it much harder to stick to my running plan than I do sticking to a workout regimine.4 -

I went for a run! Woo hoo! I did 5k! Even better. Pretty much a tempo run of 5:40min/km so that's brilliant! Given I haven't run in a week, it wasn't as bad as I expected. And I feel good. All the minor niggles and annoyances have gone. I figure I'll do 4k tomorrow then 6 the day after. Sort of building a base again.
In other news, I won an academic excellence award this year! (feeling smart) and got a $150 voucher to spend at the mall (equivalent of around $80-100usd) and i have no idea what to spend it on! The mall is 4hrs drive away, and I will be there after Christmas. They have a proper running store but my shoes tend to be twice that haha. Socks?
Why is my first thought running gear?? You guys have corrupted me!18 -

I'm back from my hunting trip, only 12 pages behind! I'll try to catch up over the next few days.
I was good, for the most part. I limited my walking to 5500 to 7500 steps the first 3 days and never walked a field, but I did walk the last two fields on the fourth day (about 2 miles total) and ended up with over 11,000 steps that day. My foot felt like it was getting better every day, so I'm optimistic about recovery.
Kody had a wonderful time. He was in heaven! He is so happy out there hunting. It does wear him out though. My brother tracks his steps and based on his count, and guessing that Kody is running three times the distance, that's 22 miles a day for 4 days for Kody!
A couple Kody photos. One on the last day in the field, and one after the hunt, curled up in the back seat, ready to go home.
For the squeamish, there are no dead animals in the photos.
29 more days until my next run!

December goal: 60 miles
12/1: 5.11 miles
12/4: 6.25 miles
12/5: 3.11 miles
12/9: 9.02 miles
12/11: 3.12 miles
12/12: 3.12 miles
12/13: 5.11 miles
12/16: 4.61 miles
12/18: 3.13 miles
12/19: 3.16 miles
45.74/60 miles completed
Today's run was really nice. The weather was just perfect for a run. I got 3.16 miles in. I wasn't as fast as yesterday, but still a pretty nice pace for me and I had negative splits. When I got home I saw 2 pesky loose dogs. Unfortunately they were my pesky dogs. At least I knew they wouldn't bite me.
I forgot to post my ticker yesterday, but I did update it so here it is.
2018 races:
5/19/18: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - 2:43:59.7. - 2nd place AG
10/6/18: Old Rip 5K Run - PR 29:43.5, 2nd place AG
11/10/18: Wags & Whiskers 5K - 30.05 official time - 1st place female/3rd overall7 -

Does it have to be used before a certain date? If not could you hang onto it and use it towards shoes when you do need new ones? (Assuming you can't put the extra up to do that now and have the shoes waiting for when they're needed....)
I don't know what prices are like there but that's quite a lot of socks unless you use really special ones lol
Otherwise *kitten* running stuff and use it to pamper yourself with if they have anywhere there that you can? Massage? Facial? Nails? Hair?
You earned that thing, make sure you do something you really want to with it.
(Which ok if socks are your thing and they are going to make you really happy, go ahead!)

IN GENERAL - Avoid ice and ibuprofen as much as you can. They hinder the body's natural healing process.
I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV though it could be a fun role someday if somehow I ever end up on TV.
In general, I agree with this. Inflammation is part of your body's healing process. There is science that suggests that taking NSAIDs for the first 2 or 3 days after an acute injury may actually help heal the injury. After that, leave them on the shelf. Note that general soreness from running is not considered acute. An acute injury would be a muscle strain, sudden bout of tendonitis, or an ankle sprain.
I very rarely take ibuprofen for running injuries and didn't take any at all during my foot recovery. Let the body do it's thing!

amymoreorless wrote: »That was the weirdest 1/2 I have ever run. A running friend and I drove out to a resort in the middle of nowhere. The race started after dark and everyone had to wear a headlamp. They had us run over a golf course and through some hiking trails...in the pitch black 😂. It was interesting anyway. Trail running in the dark with a headlamp is certainly challenging.
That sounds like my kind of race! For night trail running on trails I'm not familiar with, or for technical trails I know, I like to carry a flashlight in my hand as well as use a headlamp. A headlamp lights up what you're looking at, but it takes away the depth perception you normally get from a light source further away from your eyes. That's where the handheld light comes in handy. It casts more shadows when shining on the rocks ahead and make it easier to interpret the terrain.

If you look only at the number of birds we brought home, it was our worst year ever. Only 35 out of a possible 60. If you look at what a great time we had...me and my two boys, my brother and his boy, Kody, and all the great family and friends out there whom we stay with, hunt with and socialize with, as well as the warmest December hunt ever (which made it harder to get birds), then it was a huge success. It was a grand time and the highlight of my year.8 -
