I had the same problem. A vegan place around me, that I loved eating at (although I am not vegan or vegetarian, i just was looking for healthier optioned foods and trying somethig new) has recorded their food as being 800+ calories. Most vegan establishments will not post calories because they want people to focus on living healthier lifestyles and eating healthy foods (which i later realized it was about hiding the hidden calories, overkilling curtain high caloric items to have the meals taste better) and have it not be about calorie counting, but when you load a salad up with beans and oil...for the sake of calorie counting.. it can be a bomb to the system like any other establishment. Even just adding one too many avocados can be an overkill. Sodium tends to be another overkill in vegetarian items, especially if it contains soy bean.
One good thing to come out of this experience is I got to try some new dishes and have tailored them for home (minus the tons of calories!).1 -

Wasn't planning on running today, but couldn't resist trying something new with footwear. I've been running for years in vibram 5 finger shoes, but saw a YT video about arch support helping with knee alignment. So in the hopes of not doing anything to jeopardize my post-surgery knee, I donned a pair of Nikes. It felt very weird at first. My toes were cramped and the heel part of the shoe was like dead weight. But the extra cushion was nice.
Curious to know everyone's running shoe preference. Any shoe you swear by (or against)?6 -

Running shoes are a very personal choice. My favorite are Brooks. I highly recommend going to a running store and being professionally evaluated rather than purchase based on someone elses preferences. A professional fitting will involve evaluation your personal pronation, gait, and take into consideration any other relevant factors such as a history of knee surgery.5 -

There was a study recently which found that more padding equals more impact, not less, since foot strike is harder due to a lack of feeling the ground. Also, shoes which feel cushy are not necessarily correlated to a lower risk of injury - in fact it seems to be the opposite.
I have one knee with no ACL (torn decades ago, never repaired, too late now) and run in a knee brace using stability shoes. I have tried various things and find the Brooks Adrenaline 18 is great on my knee. However, the new Brooks Adrenaline 19 has had the medial post removed and is no good for me.
With your issues I would definitely see a shoe pro and ask for help. Then test and go with what works. REI has a one year no questions asked return policy, good for road testing.5 -

@somethingsoright , as @debrakgoogins said, running shoes are a very personal choice. Every body is different and will react to the same shoe model differently. The best thing you could do is go to your local running store, if there's one in your area, and work with them to find the right shoe.
There's a lot of hype in the running industry, about all products. There are a lot of theories as to the best type of shoe...minimalist, heavily padded, zero drop, etc, but the best article/study I've seen shows that if you pick the shoes you feel most comfortable running in, you'll be fine.

Sounds like your hip flexors. I do a self-massage on them before I go to sleep. Helps tremendously personally.

Couldn't do a multi-quote and didn't want a bunch of posts littering this thread, so here goes with the running shoe response.
I will check into getting a gait analysis. So far I've checked out some websites of nearby running shops (closest is an hour away). Some don't even list a gait analysis service on their sites.
Also wondering if a sports podiatrist would do the same thing. Saw one (in another state) who offered a podiatric biomechanical assessment.2 -

Me too. I feel my best after the 25 minute mark. Then around the 80 minute mark I start feeling tired. Hoping as I increase my distances over time, the 80 minute mark becomes 90. But I also don’t fuel during my runs which I probably need to start researching once I get past the 2 hour mark.

Four easy miles with my fiancée today, as we are staying with his family and I would get lost in the area without him. It’s nice we are both the same pace at the moment, although I shouldn’t say that as it’s only because he’s rehabbing from injury, so it won’t be long before he goes back to leaving me behind.

The streak ended yesterday!
This is my 3rd or 4th year - can't remember which - and I didn't have Strava that long. But it was the best year yet!
I have the weather to thank for that. It was unusually cold - except the last 4 days. Now we are back in the 80s.
By the way, the streak next year is the shortest possible - 35 days - from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day. This year was the longest it could possibly be: 41 days. So if you are wanting to join the fun, next year would be the year to do it!

The site could be a joke, but the race is not. Clearly there is some joking going on with the race and course descriptions.
I know some of these guys and they did this last year as an informal race. Whether there truly will be a formal registration this year, I have no idea, but they will be doing this again, that's for sure.
@PastorVincent it's certainly not for everyone but I guarantee everyone who's there, be it as a runner, volunteer, or spectator, will have a great time.3 -
Alas, I have not yet run any miles in 2019. However, I did (1) clean my house from top to bottom for the very first time since moving in a month ago, and (2) finish day one of Fitness Blender’s FB Sweat program (@amymoreorless *high five*, great minds, etc). And hey, the video was pretty fun, although I’m not a huge fan of using FB for actual weight lifting (not focused enough, too much time flailing around changing weights). I think I’ve changed my January goals three times already so I’m reluctant to post anything too definitive, but let’s say for now that I’m going to plan on a FB video 6 days a week and will fit runs in when the weather/spirit calls.
On that note, yesterday’s high was 10 degrees and it’s still real icy out, but today is inching up toward 20 and we're projected for sunny and above freezing through the weekend, so I have high hopes for some unseasonably nice running days. Normally I dislike when the temperature goes above freezing during the winter as it leads to the dreaded freeze-melt-refreeze cycle, but we’ve had so much ice the last few days that any melt should be an improvement. There’s no rain forecast either (IT SHOULDN’T RAIN IN WINTER ANYHOW!) so hopefully we’ll be in the clear. Fingers crossed - anyone who moved to Minnesota expecting predictable weather patterns was not well informed.

Nominal January mileage goal: 200 miles
Real Goals: Train well toward Boston. Work the January races into the training plan smoothly. Remain uninjured, even if it means cutting back on planned mileage or races.
Today's notes – After yesterday's hard race, today I needed to run easy. 6 miles was reasonable for the training plan, so I set out on a known 6.3 mile route with not very many hills. Advantage of being retired, I could run in the heat of the day at 33° F (0.5° C). There wasn't much wind, the roads were clear of snow and ice, and the Christmas drivers are back parked in their garages, so it was quite pleasant.
There was absolutely no traffic in the curvy residential street section in the middle of the route, so I practiced running tangents. Hopefully practicing them will keep them better in mind on race day. Ran by feel, periodically looking at my watch and seeing that I'm running about MP instead of easy. Need to slow down. Didn't do it. So much for being able to regulate pace.
The watch ticked over 6 miles, and I felt really good; so I gave it a fast finish. Accelerated to threshold level of effort, then interval level of effort, and gave it rep level of effort for the last 100m or so. This was a really nice, relaxing run with a shot of adrenaline at the end.
Oh, and the pace. Target for easy is 7:45 to 8:15 per mile. I've targeted 7:30 per mile for MP the last 2 training cycles. Mile splits came in at 7:47, 7:30, 7:31, 7:35, and 7:34. The fast tag end came in at a 6:14 pace, which is close enough to my interval pace. Consistent, yes. Controlled, not as well as it should be. Now @PastorVincent will become disillusioned; I'm not unlike the rest of the runners.
But at least I feel good physically.

Joining a little late here, but my healthy January was somewhat scuppered by a proposal from my now fiance (eek!) yesterday. So... Good from tomorrow.
I've had a long time off running, so am going to aim for a very modest 25 miles as a starter. I'm new to the challenge/group, so hi everyone!
My 2019 goals are:
1. Lose 2 stone (especially important now a wedding dress is on the horizon)
2. Run a half marathon in less than 2 hours
3. Be able to do proper chin ups and press ups (taking this one slowly as I broke my wrist in October)

I can already see it is going to be VERY difficult to keep up with everyone here, not only in running mileage, but also messages. WOW! I know the first messages said there would be a lot, but OMG! It wasn’t so bad when I was on vacation over the holidays, and was able to check the board several times a day. But now that I am back to work, more than likely I will only be able to check it in the evening, and I will be lucky if I can get through all the messages.
Anyway, I started my January Running challenge yesterday. Next run is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

I think I committed to running 30 miles this month, or maybe it was 40. I will have to go find my original post, but no matter I will probably try to surpass whatever I committed too because I know it was conservative to begin with.
@katharmonic, I see you mentioned a spreadsheet for tracking your statistics. What do you track. I have a spreadsheet as well and I track time, distance, and average pace. I am just curious if there is something else I should consider tracking.
