WOMEN AGES 50 + FOR JANUARY 2019

Penny: I’m sure I’d be filled with delight during the arctic summer, but I’m not sure how well I’d do in December. Christmas lights are a huge help with the addition of Vitamin D3 here at the 45th parallel. I take the D3 year around and don’t change the dose just because of the day length. It is only January 8 and I’m already noticing the increased light and feeling good about it.
Felicia: It sounds like you’re having a great trip. Enjoy every minute.
I have a city meeting to attend this evening and I’m looking forward to it.

Hi everyone, it appears that MFP is experiencing difficulties with the food. I can track if it's in my list, but if I search for a food I cannot add that to my diary. Hope it's fixed soon.
Ollie is doing great. I think he thinks he just went for a playdate.4 -

Bonnie, are you using your phone to log? I'm not having trouble logging on my PC - but it was acting up a few weeks ago. Glad Ollie is doing great. Love his ears by the way.

@lhscapil, I was able to log everything on my phone, but not my laptop.
His ears are funny. I want to call him Bunny. LOL!!1 -
Hi gals. I've read all the posts but can't stay up long enough to comment on everyone! I'm going to bed as soon as DH calls; I didn't sleep well last night and I'm practically drooling here.
Welcome to the newbies; you will enjoy being here!
Katiebug: OMG I about choked I laughed so hard at the cat/egg picture. That was hilarious!

@BonnieHosk85 Since you are on your laptop but have no problem on your phone, your laptop may not be connected to the internet. The app doesn’t have access to search for foods. You may briefly see a bar at the top saying something about local.

Margaret There are at least a bajillion youtube recordings at various frequencies. First of all, I am completely ignorant of whatever research there may be on which frequencies might be healing or sleep-inducing or calming. Second, from reading some of the comments, apparently some of the frequencies on youtube are "bogus". People have tested them with frequency monitors.
How did you figure out what to listen to?

Hi all!
I'm going to spend the day preparing for my dinner party. Yes, I know I don't have to go to a lot of trouble, but I've been promising them (younger son and my daughter in law) a proper dinner since we've been here. We always see them in a rush, or with the grandkids, so this will be a 'grown up' occasion.
Going to do the works, candles, flowers, three courses plus cheese.
The dessert is mainly done - the brownies. Going to add chocolate sauce and think about vanilla ice cream.
The venison in red wine main course is done. Going to have spinach on the side and a potato and celeriac gratin. I'm going to do them in small, brightly coloured, ceramic pots.
The starter is locally smoked mackerel, plus a (bought) salmon and roe sushi. Served with lightly home pickled carrot and zucchini, watercress and horseradish sauce.
Cheese is Camembert and strong local cheddar.
Should be good. All wine, sparkling, rosé and red, will be AF, because my son is a recovering alcoholic.
Last night's visit from my friends went well. I could see that DH was uncomfortable as they were very 'loud' , but he did his best. I would prefer just to see her, but it was fine. I was good on calories as I had got a 5k run in as well as my exercise session.
Will just do the exercises session today. Small portions are in order tonight.

I haven't been trying to lose weight in an orderly way for over a year but am back trying in here again.
I had to laugh when I saw that I've only lost 3 lbs. since the last time I logged in here. There have been gains and losses; attempts and binges. And my weight is about the same.
I have 25 lbs. to lose and am aiming for doing it over the next seven or eight months. My metabolism has always been very, VERY slow. And now that I'm 66 and have some joint issues, I don't do a lot to get it revved up.
I'm a yoga and meditation teacher with my own small studio. I'm planning to close it up for a year and take an extended vacation with my DH when he retires soon. We hope to be in India (where we've been before) for six months and then China, Alaska, the NW US, Toronto and Nova Scotia for the following six months.
You guys seem like a pretty big group. Kind of hard to keep track of everybody. I hope to catch on to what's going on with you, though.

This goes back to "the one thing". Don't get overwhelmed by the whole list ... just do one thing.
I'm back to doing that again. I've spent the last couple days filling my calendar and updating my "To Do" list. I'm not 100% sure, but I think I've got just about everything on there now.
It's been complicated booking things ... like a puzzle. I had to book this appointment before that appointment which needed to come shortly before another appointment, all of which needed to occur by this date ... except for this and that ... and don't forget that the second appointment needs several preparation steps so I can't book it the day after ...
I do, however, have a nagging suspicion that I've forgotten something.

I just thought of one thing I did forget to add to the list ...
Take Down Christmas Decorations!! I might be able to pencil that in for the weekend of Jan 19/20 ... or maybe Feb 2/3.

Morning, afternoon and evening, all,
Just checking in here while my iced tea is brewing, and then have some things I need to get done before I shower and go into town. Couple meetings today with local United Way. One day in my home office tomorrow, then back over to Little Rock for more meetings/trainings Friday. But home that evening. Then Fayetteville for the Cookie-Palooza on Saturday, if I have any energy left over whatsoever (kicks off Girl Scout cookie season - cookie booths begin March 1!). Next week is all-staff retreat, two days (Tues/Weds) at a rural retreat, with every moment packed with activities, none of which I have to arrange whatsoever, and all jeans and t-shirt wearing fun, so will just go with the flow. Don't even have to drive myself! There are a bunch going from the local office, so I'll meet them there and then trek off into the never-never (Arkansas version).
I like this bunch of ladies - and am comfortable at the home office in ways I never was in my last council. I feel accepted, understood, valued and even prized for my what I bring to the table, and it's a lovely feeling. After next week, the running around Arkansas should (hopefully) settle down, and I'll be able to concentrate a tad bit better. Still, I've accomplished a few things.
So glad y'all are here - glad you new ones are here, too!! No need to be overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of posts. I touch lightly on most, respond where I feel I have something to contribute, and love feeling surrounded by like-minded women.
Which reminds me, lost two pounds of what I had gained back while I was on this trip, so at least I feel I'm headed in the right direction! AND... drum roll, should be getting a call in a few days from a local orthopedist. The consult made it back through the VA system, and this time it's for the right knee, which is the correct knee. Last time, they put it through for the left knee, which is not the right knee, or even the correct knee. Fingers crossed the appointments will come fairly fast and I can get this done, and be running again (like a turtle runs through peanut butter, but still...) by summer!
Love y'all!

Aliza The only expectations here are to stay away from religion & politics, and treat each other with respect. Keeping up with each and every one of us is not expected...no stress!
Welcome!
Oh...and since you are soon to be a world traveler, you should know that there are women from all over the world here! Maybe you'll be able to meet up!

I've been to the posh supermarket, gave our Christmas biscuits to a homeless guy and bought lots of yummy things. My pickle is stinking out the kitchen!! I also bought microgreens instead of watercress. Fun!
This is the table. Quite pleased with it. The runner and the napkins have silver sparkles and stars.
I'm enjoying myself because I don't feel anxious about the company.

How did you figure out what to listen to?

I agree you need to be careful about claims of health listening to something on the internet. I just like the soothing sounds that some of these web sites offer. Listening to them help me to relax and that is the most important thing.
I believe whatever helps to get you into a relaxed state is what helps to heal you.
Lanette our weather last week was usually warm so more people were out walking three of the fatalities also happened after dark. I have noticed not all pedestrians wear light colors that are easier to see at night. I have also had pedestrians just walk right into the street without looking.
I used to sing a song in Kindergarten the lyrics are:
Stop look and listen before you cross the street
Use your eyes, uses your ears
Then use your feet.
I believe better education for both drivers and pedestrians needs to be addressed along with accessing the safety of the crosswalk. The one I described covered four lanes of traffic, with no island, and no signal and it was also on a hill so those going south were going downhill and tend to go faster than the 40 mph speed limit at that crosswalk. It is a wonder that this is the first fatal accident at that site since they put it in 30 years ago. They put it there because there is a group of apartment building across from a park and a bus stop. People from the apartments were crossing to get to the bus stop and park and they were trying to make it safer for them to do so. Hopefully if they keep the crosswalk, they will install a light that the pedestrians can use when they need to cross.

Heather, I just listened to a podcast about alcohol free beverages and cocktails. They talked about all the reasons that people would choose alcohol free. Here is the link:

For those of you who like to watch docu-series on health like the Broken Brain and Real Skinny on Fat, I just discovered Dr. Mercola is also hosting a nine day free one also starting January 15th. Here's the link -- https://www.livelongerfeelbetter.com/.
I have a hunch he'll have some of the same presenters as the Real Skinny on Fat series. I signed up for it, so we'll see how it goes.

I thought it was interesting to hear about all the kinds of people who choose alcohol free cocktails---not just alcoholics and people with religious reasons, and to hear about all the interesting drinks.1 -
Bonnie: I do all my logging on my phone because it is with me and I can log as I go rather than remember later. My memory can distort or lose information. :ohwell:
M in Oz: I’m sure the Christmas decorations will not evaporate while you’re doing things that are more essential than undecorating. You’ve had a very long todo list for a long time.
Heather: Your dining room table is gorgeous! I love the color scheme. :flowerforyou:
Margaret: I’ve seen buttons for pedestrians to push in order to get the light to change. There are many such places in downtown Portland, OR. I have always felt safer because of them.
Pip: I had a colonoscopy several years ago. The procedure itself was not unpleasant, but the prep was awful. The facility where I had it done was about 45 miles from our house. It was a very nasty ride! We got a hotel room near there when it was DH’s turn. We have shifted to an annual test that is done in the privacy of the bathroom at home.
I walked the dog to the groomer this morning and enjoyed the walk. He was less anxious than if I’d driven him in the car and it is close enough to be an easy walk. Rain would have changed that decision, but it is a dry morning so far.
