I am in shock. My dearest friend just called to tell me her husband died Friday. He was expected home at 6pm and when he hadn't arrived or responded to calls or texts she became quite concerned. Hospitals, police, highway patrol nothing. At 10 pm the county coroner arrived at her house with the sad news that he'd collapsed in a store, was rushed to local hospital but died of a heart attack. A friend stayed with her the first night and another friend has come to stay as long as needed. She is understandably devastated, doesn't know how she's going to manage without him. She's most concerned about their dogs, too big and energetic for her to walk and exercise as he did. Went on Rover.com to order a dog walk for her.
Time to make will, medical power of attorney and BBOD. Even if I can't get Joe on board, I can do them for me.
Feel that cry coming on...

Machka - what a beautiful park to walk through.
Ginger - those are some great ways of getting extra steps and such in! Thanks for sharing. I saw you write 2014 and then say 5 years ago, it stopped me for a minute. I can’t believe how fast time is going.
Barbara - how awful for your friend, it sure stops you in your tracks and puts the important things in perspective when something like that happens.
Lisa - that quilt should auction off really well!
Okie - I so agree about the luggage and travelling alone!
Johicks - this group and the other one are my two mainstays. I credit both of them for keeping me in the right direction for the last year, even when I go off course a bit, they bring me back.
Had a much better day yesterday and a busy week ahead of me. Lots of little things to get done and out of the way interspersed with some meetups and appointments.
Not too much to say today,

Just joined the 50’s club and finding out how much harder it is to lose weight. I’m also fighting depression and I’m sure it has to do with never meeting any of my goals.
I am giving myself a new start in being healthy.
April goals:
Excercise (run or Zumba) 3 times per week
Lift light weights
Make a daily list of duties/chores and complete them.
Cut out fast food and sweet treats.
Detox my body (from sweets and caffeine) this month.
I like to snack and I typically overdo it.
Does anyone have any effective healthy snacking tips. This is my downfall.
My current weight is 266. My heaviest ever. Gives me low self esteem. I used to be a runner so this feels horrible to me right now.
Starting today I am hoping to lose 8-10 pounds by the end of April.
Stay encouraged everyone!

Heather: I am so impressed by the group photo with your lifelong friends. All of you look wonderful.
Ginger in TX: I’m so sorry for your knee pain. I have experience with knee pain, too. Mine was caused by over-use during a horseback riding lesson. Losing 70 pounds was a huge help for my bad knee. It seldom bothers me now unless I’ve eaten something too salty or just plain overused it. :flowerforyou:
Pip: I love your dogs.
Laura & Barbie: I agree completely with Barbie’s comment. It is fantasy to think one can make one’s mother do anything she doesn’t want to do. Mine was a lifelong smoker. She would sneak cigarettes even when she was in an assisted care facility that forbade them. She couldn’t/wouldn’t quit. My dad was the same way.
Machka: Your fall foliage is starting to be beautiful.
Barbara: I am so sorry for the unexpected loss of your friend’s DH.
Johicks: Welcome!!! :flowerforyou:
Lisa 50 OH: Plain raw celery is great snack food. It takes more calories to digest than it contains. If you put stuff on it such as cream cheese or peanutbutter, the calories jump right up there.
This is prep day for DH’s colonoscopy. The critter sitter will be here today to take care of our dog. We’ll be going in to the hotel across the street from the hospital later today for DH to do his prep.

(((((Barbara))))))💖 I'm so sorry about your friends husband passing.
Was able to text a couple of minutes with Navy son last night.💖
Was able to chat with middle son, and he's trying his hardest to be level headed with all this change in his life. New baby coming, financial stress of all that. So he's back on Zoloft, its an antidepressant medication. He gets anxiety attacks. Poor kid, but he has a therapist, and so he's on the right track. Its scary as a mom to hear though. I know I have a great relationship with my husband, and we talk a lot. I am hoping he is able to open up how he feels with his wife. Its hard to let things out of your control happen as they may. Its that moment when he had no control, that gives him anxiety. As a child he never did well with change. It took him a bit longer to smile and realize it was ok, if we went visiting family or out camping. He let financial woes affect him at a young age. We would go out to dinner, and he would not eat. I would try to tell him that it was ok, we had planned for this, but he would just say he wasn't hungry. His way of controlling his environment.
Today is a quiet day. Gym then home. 💖
Hugs to each of yous!
💖Rebecca

I gotta brag. I'm 56. On December 9th I weighed 311....today 278....I have a long way to go but 33 pounds is a start! I have serious mobility issues from an accident 5 years ago (I need a cane) and while I have had a gym membership for years, I rarely used it. In the past few weeks I have been going regularly and even have hired a trainer who understands working with the disabled and takes no excuses! In March my dog died and I had thyroid cancer (fine now). But, I have stayed on track. Current goal is 200 by January 31 which I think is do-able but I wonder if it is reasonable. End of bragging!

Lisa 50 OH....if you figure out the snack thing, let me know....snacks are my major downfall. I have made some luck by always keeping sugar free jello in thee fridge (Royal jello has less calories than Jello brand - 1/2C= 5 calories v 1/2 C = 10 calories).5
-
MariMcKeon, I hope you will come back often and share your success. You are a great example that mobility issues don't have to keep a person from being active and losing weight.
Ginger, Your sharing about how you stay active with normal chores reminded me of an article I read a few years ago that talked about how inefficiency can help with weight loss. It's efficient to carry all your folded laundry to the bedroom in one trip, but doesn't burn many calories or count many steps, but the inefficient practice of folding and carrrying laundry to put it away one piece at a time is very active.
Jake has bbq chicken cooking the in the slow cooker and now he's napping. This is my time to take care of a bunch of computer and bookkeeping chores. I've completed a lot and can now treat myself to an hour of TV and the exercise bike.

Beautiful weekend. 70 degrees weather. Sounds like it will last today and tomorrow and then snow on Wednesday and rest of week cold. Wish it would get Spring already. I went to my niece's baby shower Saturday and it was a lot of fun, my sister was there and we were civil. Then yesterday after church and house cleaning we went motorcycle riding and I drove our trike. I am getting better just the shifting confuses me when I first start out, but getting better.
Janetr--Beautiful family picture. They grow up so fast.
Dana--Thanks for sharing the pictures. What a pretty place and you and DH looks really good.
Barbie--Beautiful flowers. Your hard work is paying off.
Heather--Glad your trip was fun and you got lots of steps in. Love the picture.
Barbara--So sorry to hear of your friends DH.
Well time to get some work done and hopfully when I get home get laundry folded and put away.
Tomorrow is weigh in day.

KJ and others - thank you for your comments on the photo of 'the girls'. These are my old friends from our secondary school (age 11 - 18) I actually knew my friend's sister from junior school, and she was there at her party. I used to sit behind her in class. I passed the 11+ (a selection exam) a year early so jumped into the Grammar School a year early.
I really got best friends with the girls from about 15, when we started doing Drama classes together and produced performances for competitions. We were also in the school play and the Debating Society. We went to Paris together when I was 16. A lot of water under the bridge since then with many life changes and traumas, but we have stayed in touch through all that and picked up with twice yearly meetings since the children grew up.
My friend at the back, who gave the party has had severe mental illness, with suicide attempts and prolonged hospital stays. Her daughter will not talk to her. My difficult friend who is sitting alone has been passively abused by her crook of a tax dodging husband for years. The friend at the front lost one husband in a car crash, left a drunken husband, and is pretty amazing. Life throws so much at all of us, but we survive. I'm so glad I went, because it meant so much to my friend. She said she will never give another party, but she really needed to give this one. All her friends and family came. We are blessed.
I am so glad to be home. Phew! Long journey.
Got back to hear that Bea had got Edie's vomiting bug and my son was panicking. Could we pick up Max and Edie from after school club? Had to dash off and leave our already poured champagne! The kids were delighted to see us and we had rude jokes all the way back to their house. I was pleased to help out my desperate son who had left the vomit covered car seat outside the house!!! That's what grandparents are for.
The good news is we won't be looking after her tomorrow! Just got the three of them on Wednesday, if Max hasn't caught it by then!
We really could do with a rest. DH has driven an hour and a half each way to cricket four days running! Tomorrow will be a welcome, 'normal' day. Hooray!

@MariMcKeon - nothing wrong with a little bragging-you are doing great. Glad you have found trainer who can help. I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 1996 and had thyroid removed. Get the occasional recurrence.
No idea if goal is reasonable-probably depends on activity level, etc.-but set your goal and try-that's the only way you will know.1 -
Lanette I read several of Cornwell's books. Not all of them, by any means. I like her early books best. The inspiration for the Scarpetta heroine came from the Chief Medical Examiner (Marcella Fierro) who I mentioned in my prior post, but Scarpetta's physical description definitely matches Cornwell. Dr. Fierro is a round, short, dark Italian woman...
...one of the most accomplished and amazing women/role models I have ever met. Again, I doubt that she would even remember me now. She had so many students who rotated through the medical examiner's office. She left an indelible imprint on me, though. I learned so much from her. As an addendum, Patricia Cornwell donated a LOT of money for state-of-the-art forensic technology in Virginia.

Hi Ladies - took some time away from the computer this weekend to celebrate the 14th anniversary of my daughter's adoption and becoming a family. We had a great time, culminating in a trip to the ballet.
Met with a trainer Thursday who was really awesome and helpful in setting up a strength training program. He was super-encouraging and told me it was time to shop for smaller workout pants because mine kept sliding down. Yay me!!! I'm down about 33 pounds now. I weigh in on Thursdays so more later this week.
MariMcKeon - awesome job in the weight loss category. It's a tough battle for anybody, but even tougher with mobility issues. You are to be commended.
Lisa, 50, OH - I used to live in Columbus. I miss it so much!! Sweets and snacks are a downfall for me too. Easter candy is everywhere right now. I can hardly wait for April 21 when it will be gone from the shelves!! Snacking is all about picking stuff that's healthy and using proper portion sizes. I had to count my stuff and put it in individual bags. Fresh veggies are good - celery sticks and carrot sticks. There is a puffed corn/rice snack called Pirate's Booty that I think is pretty good. It is low fat, low carb and organic. I buy the 1/2 ounce lunch box-sized bags; otherwise, I would sit and eat it like a bag of chips. I know I'm paying extra, but it is what works for me right now. Sugar-free pudding is pretty good, The YQ yogurt is a decent and filling snack.

Heather: What a treasure to have reunions with longtime friends. Glad it went well.
Ginger: You are really rocking it with total daily calorie burn. I exercise for 50 minutes daily on cardio machines and struggle to hit 2200 calories on my Fitbit. As far as not eating at night, I always have sugarless gum handy. It goes into my mouth at the end of every meal, and the strong minty flavor is a signal to my brain that I'm done with solid food for now.
Barbara: Adding my sympathies to all the others who cannot fathom the pain and loss your friend is experiencing. Please let her know our thoughts are with her.
Lisa: Hope you will post photos of the quilt. Sounds like a perfect auction item. Hope it fetches a mint.
If I could, I would bottle today's weather. It will be nice and warm for next couple of days, then we are supposed to get another blizzard. :c That is spring in the Rockies
Okay, time to get my evening pedaling started. Y'all take care. We can do this. I believe in you.

Barbara So sorry to hear about your friends husband’s passing. How tragic. I can’t imagine how that would be.
Pip I just love your dogs!
Rebecca I’m so glad you found a house so close and so nice and big! Plenty of room for Legos, right?
I had a nice lose today! 2.4 lbs! Yeah me! I ate mashed potatoes a couple of days in a row, but had salads and veggies too.
I measured my waist but was the same.

(((Barbara))) Thinking of your friend with the sudden loss of her husband. How wonderful of you to arrange for dog walkers. Wonderful, thoughtful gift for your friend. Makes me think of how our lives can change in a moment. Prayers for you and your friend.

Did 1 segment of 10MS Pilates then took the extremepump class. The plan for tomorrow is to do the Biggest Loser Cardio Max DVD
Laura in LA – welcome! And welcome to anyone else new that I may have missed
M – what a lovely park you walk thru
Regarding fitting in exercise – so many times Vince will laugh at me because I will do something like take one item of clothing out of the dryer and put it away then go back and do the same thing for another piece. He just can’t (or won’t) understand why I do one piece at a time, isn’t it more efficient to do them at once (in his words)?
Barbara – I’m so sorry about your friend. How old was her husband? There was something recently in the paper about a heart disease someone can have and there are no symptoms but they have a heart attack and die. Like the husband of the ex-President of Newcomers. No one expected him to drop dead of a heart attack. He didn’t smoke, wasn’t overweight, had no history of heart disease, yet the paramedics couldn’t bring him back (they were right there when it happened). How wonderful of you to get that dog walking service! It’ll mean so much more than flowers that will die. Or even a plant.
Lisa – that quilt sounds lovely. Love the colors. I definitely would like to see a pic of it so be sure to post one. I’m sure Rori would like to see it, too.
Lisa from OH – Why not make your goals short-term, something like “for the next hour I’ll…….”, then you can’t fail and before you know it 1 hour will turn into 2 which will turn into 3 and so on. As far as snacking, I try to keep things in the house that are good for me – lots of fruit and veges. You have to understand, my husband loves his junk food. I do try to keep things for him that I don’t like (like Doritos)
Mari – you SHOULD brag, and this is the perfect place. I’m so happy for you. Despite everything, you go girl, staying on track. I’m very impressed.
After exercise, counted the collection for the church then had to make the deposit, then bowling (boy, do I s***), then ceramics where I picked up my Donald Duck, then mahjongg.

Hi there,
Forgot to tell you that just opposite me on the train was a woman in a wheelchair, who was steadily working on her laptop and talking on the phone (quietly) for the whole journey. I quickly realised who it was. Tanni Grey Thompson. She is is a famous athlete and has won nearly everything in paralympics (marathons) She is now a Dame and must have been going down to London for a House of Lords vote. I was so impressed by her work rate that it shamed me into doing some writing. She is a great example of not letting disability stop you from exercising. She has spina bifida.

Morning, afternoon and evening, my friends...
Up early, as I'm leaving in just in about 90 minutes. First a meeting in Searcy, Arkansas, at 8:30 a.m. (about a 3-hour drive), and then Little Rock by 11:30 (about an hour drive from Searcy) for a lunch meeting, another meeting there about 1:30, then home after that one. Six to seven hours of driving, four hours of meeting. Long day. But then ten days before my next driving day. April will be like this every year, as six of the 12 United Ways want presentations in April. That's the nature of the beast. Should only be one or at most two next month.
Got my not-so-narrow behind to the park yesterday to walk, three circuits around their walking track, first true deliberate walking exercise since the knee replacement two months ago. Made it about 2/3 of a mile. When I get that to a mile, I'll walk to the park and back, as well, about a quarter mile each way, but uneven terrain. I'll get there, just need to be patient with myself still. Not my strong suit. Rainy days, I'll use the rower, but I need the weight-bearing exercise to really strengthen this knee.
And woke up writing in my head, so that's coming back stronger, too. Will be a good day.
Y'all are in my thoughts more than you know.
Love y'all!

My Word for 2019 is CHOICE with a different word chosen for each month.
My word for April is CONSOLIDATE
This month I am choosing to take stock of how much I have achieved so far. At almost 73, I feel that my emphasis should be on health and fitness. I upped my calories slightly, and am concentrating on reducing my empty calories.Week 1 update on goals:
Still trending downward, keeping it real.
April Daily Goals Just for today...- Log food/stay under goal 8/8
- 9000 steps a day 8/8
- 60+ minutes intentional exercise daily 8/8
- Weigh less at the end than now - 1 lb
Off to my Craft Group meeting. Then Art History after lunch, and Crochet Group after dinner. I am off for a long weekend with my crochet friends on Friday.
💖 Have a great day 💖

Inspiring posts! I feel like a slug with my exercise lately but remember that part of that is my overcrowded mind swirling with workload thoughts. I can and will do something active today, even if it is walking around the corridors of the building for one little thing, (like the laundry exercise mentioned) Like Rori's chewing gum trick to trigger no eating at night. Just gotta work in a trigger to get going again. The trees are starting to bud and I'm starting to sneeze and wheeze, uhoh, no excuses! get movin'. One thing I did last night when I was thinking about eating ice cream (it's in the house because we've got company coming this weekend) I kept thinking, hey there's rocky road in the freezer, you know, you could just have a little, it's no big deal....so then a bigger stronger voice said, get up and drink a glass of water it is 10 p.m. you need water, not rocky road....the bigger voice won!
