Going to a 3 hour "joint" class this morning. Guess I'll learn all about what is going on when I have surgery next week.

So great to get back to our normal routine! I love our everyday life. Mind you, if DH hadn't been with me I doubt I'd have got to the gym machines this morning. He sets me such a good example.
He is very happy to have me back!
Haven't done my writing, but got through the whole of my exercises, including some push ups, but cut that by half as I wrenched my arm a bit when I fell over. Otherwise, all done.
Won't be able to do it tomorrow as all three kids are coming over for the day.
Then on Thursday DH has another four days of cricket!!!! Poor chap. The journey is awful, with heavy traffic. His friend stays at the hotel at the ground, but DH doesn't fancy that. Too expensive. I wouldn't mind having a night over there and catching up with my friends and family. We used to go out for a meal with his friend and his wife when they were staying there. Oh well.
Swing dance tonight. We are going to learn the Shim Sham - an individual dance that you do in a group. Always to the same music. Looking forward to it and hope my knee holds up.

Heather I think every time you decide to cancel a trip (cruise, etc) you should instead indulge in a MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE stay at your husband's cricket match to catch up with family & friends. By my count, you have cancelled 2 or 3 trips since I have been on this thread...1

I’m on my second cup of coffee and had a sandwich for breakfast. DH’s colonoscopy will begin in about 2.5 hours. It will be good to get this step done and I hope he gets some help with his digestive miseries as a result of this.

Michelle in NC, not sure why I didn’t think of the short term goals , that may certainly lessen some of my anxiety with losing weight.

Katla - my Dad was a smoker too, he had quit for three years before he was diagnosed with lung cancer. When he was diagnosed he started smoking again but tried to hide it from all of us. He would smoke on his wood shop with all of the sawdust, when we were home visiting my daughter and I caught him. The air was blue from the smoke and we could see the smoke coming up from under his table saw where he was holding it in his hand. We told him we knew and weren’t judging but he should flick it before those hot ashes went into the sawdust. He laughed then, he still tried to hide it but we didn’t say anything.
Rebecca - I’m sorry your son suffers from anxiety, both of my girls struggle with this and I find it so hard as their mother to help them. You just want to take all of their pain away.
Heather - I love the story of your friends. Hope all your Grands start feeling better soon and you and hubby avoid it. I agree with Karen about the trip cancellations. You should be able to go to a hotel for a couple nights for the cricket matches.
Michele - I love Donald.
Lisa - I bet you were relieved to have the writing back in your head!

Karen - I was super excited to read this! Had just gotten home from the thrift stores with armloads of Cornwell's books, lol. So knowing about Dr. Fierro will add a new dimension to the characters. I'll bet being a student of hers was fasincating. Have you ever watched any of the Silent Witness series from the UK? When of their forensic pathologists left the series, instead of killing him off, the story was that he came to the US to teach.
So I believe in Serendipity. Still watching Silent Witness, then picked up a couple of Patricia Cornwell books just for something to read last week - not really knowing what they were about except looked like some kind of crime mysteries, then here we are with you having "inside knowledge", lol.
New ladies - Lisa in OH, MariMcKeon, and others - please keep coming back and filling us in on your stories. You are doing so well! This is the place to be!!
Had lunch with a good friend last week, she has gained around 40 lbs in the past 10 years, she's in her early 70's. Has major bad back problems, and as a result is in pain a lot and can't walk far or exercise much, goes to comfort foods too much. I can certainly relate to it with my physical stuff this past year. And am grateful my gain is only 5 lbs which I need to turn around.
She has decided to go on Nutrisystem - it would not be my choice but I know she's in a hurry to lose weight in hopes it will help her ability to exercise more and I can't fault her for that. I gave her a copy of the SWSY (Strong
Women Stay Young) book last year, she was interested, but I will not harp on her about it. It will be there when and if she's ready to get serious to even do light arm weights.
Speaking of SWSY, I was thrilled to be able to now do bicep curls and upward rows with 8# weights on EACH arm. Still limited on the Overhead press - can't reach upward well with the left arm. Also have decided 8# will be my limit on arms, with 5# the limit on overhead press. I will add another set or more reps - my exuberance last summer to keep upping arm weights (10#, struggling) might have contributed to my frozen shoulder. 10# on ankle weights are doing fine.
New ladies interested in SWSY - there are books, websites, and videos available. Strength training as we get older is so important. And it ups the metabolism.
Carol - thinking of you at your "joint" class. If you were here in WA I'd think of it as very relaxing with a bag of Cheetos, lol. Hard to believe your surgery is coming up next week already! You'll be better than new!!
Katla - your DH's procedure should be over pretty soon. Will the doc come out and tell you anything or make you folks wait for a typed report?
DH is out weed eating in the rain. Weatherman says sunshine this afternoon and DH needs to mow here soon or we'll have to get a baler in, lol.

Ladies, before I forget. Had lunch with another friend yesterday who told me about a book she's reading which she likes, called "Women Rowing North" by Mary Pipher. I'm on the list for it now at our local library.
The cover says it's about "Navigating Life's Currents and Flourishing as We Age".
Sounds good. Have any of you read it?

Quick post, official wi day today, down 2 (yes, that's TWO!!) pounds from last week! Apparently when I don't chew my way thru the kitchen every night I can lose weight! Doubly exciting as this puts me in a lower decade, I have finally broken thru that barrier so that definitely adds incentive. Had planned on going to the gym this morning, but stayed up way too late last night, slept in and decided to get outside in my garden bed today instead. Today is supposed to be the only day with decent weather this week, so best get to it while I have the chance.
A lot of you sound very busy (Machka, I know you are ALWAYS busy!), hope all goes well with travels and medical procedures and everything else that life throws at you!

Yes, I am a worrywart. Hip surgeon said my mother is doing well. The pain she is feeling is due to muscle weakness. He referred her to an out patient physical therapy facility. He thinks she will benefit more than having a PT come to the house. Thanks to all who offered kind words and assurances!3 -

Laura, it's hard not to worry! The PT is so important. I think being in a therapy clinic will really make the importance of exercises hit home for her, and seeing other patients there during their recovery.

Dancing the Shim Sham was a very interesting experience. I really enjoyed it, even though I often got lost, but DH despaired of ever being able to do it. It goes to the tune of "It Ain't What You Do, But the Way That You Do It". Extremely good exercise, both for the brain and the body. At the end I videoed the woman teaching it, so that I would have a record of her feet! ! Must practice. They play the Shim Sham at every Swing Dance.
I almost forgot that we have French Circle tomorrow. Hope we aren't too tired after the kids have gone home!

Well been a stressful day and I still have almost 2 hours until I can go home. Working extra to cover for co-worker who has son in ICU.
My Uncle called me this morning to tell me my Aunt passed away. She fell last Monday evening and broke her hip and was in the hospital. She was at PT and had a seizure and passed away. I am shocked as she has been in good health. I really expected my Uncle to go first, but I know he will not last long without her.

The Joint Class lasted 3 hours today and I am overwhelmed with the information! But, I know I needed it as I had no idea what all would happen.

📙Accountability post for Monday, April 8th
✖️1. Carbs 50g max with no more than 25g per meal. (111g)
✖️2. Fiber 25g. (20g)
✔️3. Track in MFP. Complete the entry daily.
✖️4. Exercise - log 30 Fitbit minutes (16 Active minutes).
✖️5. No eating after 9pm. To prevent late night snacking & get a good 12 hour overnight fast.
✖️6. In bed by midnight.
• Overall Feeling: Energy wise I feel good. Disappointed in my little cookies and ice cream binge last night. But, honestly - it could’ve been so much worse. I showed a loss on the scale this morning. We’ll see if it shows in the next few days. And... i remind myself... this is not a “success only” journey. Shake it off. Plan better.
• Exercise: Got 16 minutes - while folding and putting away laundry. I stretched it to 15 by intentionally doing side-steps with arm movements between some folding. Got busy and forgot to do more.
• Eating deadline. I set this at 9pm because of my late sleep schedule. I’ll move it up when i get sleep adjusted.
• Bedtime-Sleep Hygiene. I do all the wrong things. My biggest issue is my habit of sleeping with my iPad or Kindle. I like laying in bed watching a show until i feel sleepy. I’ve done this for YEARS. I switch over to the night shift feature turning off the blue light. When I feel drowsy - i close the case and only listen with an earbud. I usually listen to Forensic Files because the narrator’s voice is calming. I take Melatonin - but not as scheduled as I should. So... starting tonight I’m back to the routine: Night meds and melatonin at 10pm. Warm bath. Ease into bed by midnight. See how the iPad thing goes.
• Bright Spots today: I took some time to have a long candlelit lavender scented Epsom Salt bath. I did some deep breathing. I listened to a podcast - Gretchen Rubin.
• Today I’m grateful for: a loving supportive husband, the love and support of my 6 siblings, the general good health of my loving parents (both age 92), the grand privilege of caring for my mother in our home - she is such a delight - and for our beautiful, loving and smart daughter and her husband and our 2 grands doing so well in life. We’re very proud of them. I feel truly blessed. ❤️

Allie & Lanette: DH had his colonoscopy today and it was a breeze. The prep was the uncomfortable part. Good news all around. There was no sign of cancer or other worrisome disease. The doctor spoke to us right after the colonoscopy. DH’s innards are healthy. He still has to be gluten free and stick to a fodmap diet. We are relieved. I hope you get good news, too, Allie.
Carol in GA: I’m making a guess, but I’m betting that “joint class” will be about healing from your upcoming surgery. I hope that all goes well. :flowerforyou:
Lisa in OH: Celery is a wonderful snack because it is healthy, has good fiber, AND burns more calories to digest than it contains. WIN! :bigsmile:
Tracey in Edmonton: I’m sorry about your dad & cancer. Mine didn’t ever get cancer, but he had severe heart disease and nicotine was very hard on his heart. In my opinion, he smoked himself to death. So did my mom, but her health problems were her lungs rather than her heart. I’m fairly sure she did have cancer at the end, but it was lung damage from smoking that killed her. I’ve mentioned that I hate smoking more than a few times. It is the habit I hate, not the person who is addicted.
We are happily at home. Our critter sitter did a great job caring for our dog and we’ll call her again if we need to leave him home while we are gone.

Carol in Ga-hope joint class went well. Been through them twice for my hips. Most important thing is to have things set up at home ahead of time.
Laura in LA-good news on mom's hip. It was what I suspected (having had two hip replacements). Our muscles get messed up from walking with a messed up hip before surgery. During surgery, they are not very gentle with the replacement and pull that leg in all sorts of directions.

I have had a busy and productive day. Close to 30 minutes on treadmill before work. Got 30 minute walk in on my lunch hour. Currently have over 12,000 steps. Have to get trash cans to the curb and get to church council meeting.
Will try to eat most of my exercise calories. Down 5lbs since starting back so I am feeling pretty motivated. Put on a pair of pants today that were much tighter a couple of weeks ago, now getting loose. Amazing what a difference even a few pounds can make.

Rori I’ll have to remember the gum trick. I keep gum in the utility drawer in the kitchen for that reason. Actually used it as a strategy for countering the after meal smoking trigger when i quit smoking in 2013. Snacking between meals doesn’t seem to be a problem for me. It’s the late night or middle of the night urge for something. I’m following a low carb way of eating. Making it a lifestyle change. Not sure why i felt the urge last night. I suspect i was frustrated with trying to sleep. I’ll make myself some low carb ice cream and cookies and freeze them in individual servings,
