got out early... and am home.. going down around 5:15 to feed DFIL and then comehome .. feel wiped out.. dont know why.. hospice social worker. meeting me at 7:45 tomorrow morning at nursing home..
Iris (Toms SIL) and I have born the brunt of doing all of the care for DFIL and I spoke with Tom this morning.. and he is getting hot under the collar as Iris and I talked about cremation...now we are trying to do what is economically possible with the money allotted .. and if something should happen to him before his brother can get up here , cremation is the easier way.. but Tom was griping that from what he knew everything was picked out and paid.. well I told him some of it was paid not all of it.. and so I texted him and made a suggestion..
since Iris and I have been doing the planning, Tom and his Brother (Doug) who dont really get along, will have to actually talk to each other and figure out what they want.. this is there father.. this is the last time they have any say about anything , they are the older ones and they have to make the decision.. Iris and I are stepping back.. and it is up to the 2 of them to figure out.. nobody wanted to take any responsibility when there mom died.. and we have at least a little bit of time to plan.. so they better sh-t or get off the pot!!6 -
Carol - glad BNL is able to be communicative. Did you ever find his will and/or financial/medical power of attorney? Maybe you mentioned and I skipped over it. You and your DH are so kind and supportive in helping him. Hoping all the legal stuff is done - good to get the bank's input to make sure no one comes out of the woodwork and questions the financial things/bill paying you are helping with.
Hope your knee is progressing well!
I found out my 2nd in line for executor/power of attorney is moving! So need to visit our attorney and get her replaced. DH is in the same predicament so we'll stop in together one of these days.
Mega-mom - looking good! Go ahead and change your handle to "Mini-mom"
I think I've missed a couple days of posts.. Busy couple days, spring is here.

Mega mom, fantastic transformation.

It was a beautiful day in Mesa Verde National Park today: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesa_Verde_National_Park
I was well on the way to generating over 12k steps, then, I slipped. Both ankles twisted. Left foot took the worse of it, so still was able to drive. Couldn't find a Kaiser Permanente health care facility in the town of Cortez where we are staying, so went to Walgreens and stocked up on epsom salt, two compressing wraps, and arnica gel. Have been icing and elevating in hopes that it will feel better for the 7 hour drive tomorrow. Poor DH. He really wants to be of help, but just can't do much to take care of me. And, he canNOT drive anymore. Will get xrays once we're back in our hood. For now, hope this is the last of the 'slips' any of us has for awhile.

KJ - Pizza should be as close to the Neapolitan original as possible. Although I actually prefer white pizza with no tomato.
Tracey - I am on Amazon under Heather Eyles. Look under Books. Most of them are my old kids books, but I self published anovel I wrote in the 80s and a memoir, so they are also on Kindle. Please read the blurbs carefully - adult content! You can get to my author page by pressing my name. I am now working on the second volume of my memoir, about my teenage years.
Katla - I also want to buy a few herbs plus some fruit bushes. Must get DH organised to take me.
I applied today to take part in a tv programme that we watch every afternoon called The Repair Shop. They take old, loved family items and repair them. There is always an emotional story attached. I have submitted my china doll Elizabeth for their help. They have thousands of applications, so I'm not holding out much hope, but I thought I would try. She was my mother's doll and she gave her to me when I was around 5 years old. I adored her as she was life sized. As she had lost her fingers my mother got new plastic arms put on her at the Doll's Hospital. They didn't fit and they wore away the arm holes. Disaster.
I attach a photo of my mother with the doll. Sorry it's blurry, but you can see the idea. Also a pic of her as she us now, all mutilated. I hope they can fix her if we are chosen. Her current state makes me very sad.
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxx
Heather, I know this is sick and wrong, but I took one look at that disturbing photo of the baby doll and started laughing hysterically.
Karen in Virginia
p.s. Rori Oh my gosh, just what you needed while away from home. I am so sorry.6 -
Rori ~ So sorry about your twisted ankles. Hope you make it home OK.
My knee is doing as well as can be expected. Leg is still black and blue and I have my moments of pain...trying to do the stretching and follow advice of PT pro. Everyone I encounter cannot believe that I just had the surgery a week ago. Still miss my wine!
Carol in Ga4 -
Rori ... so sorry you slipped!
Karen VA ... you are a sick, sick person ... ... Ok, I laughed too!
Heather ... at what point did someone think those arms would work on that doll? I was recently in the home of a doll-repairer. Is that a word? Her entire basement was dedicated to it. Quite an art actually.

Pip: Congratulations on your upcoming cruise. I hope you enjoy every moment. :flowerforyou:
Auntiebk: I love the Dogleesi shirt.
Heather: I came home from the nursery with two Golden Lemon Thyme plants and a pot of chives. I feel great about the purchases. I’ve already got them tucked into their “forever” pots.
Megamom: You are transforming yourself. WTG!!!
Rvfamilyfour: We have an RV Rita and another Lisa. Would you like the nickname RV Lisa? Welcome to a grat group!
Michele: I’m happy for you because you’re free from the Newcomer board meetings.
(((Allie))) You are an angel for your DFIL and absolutely right to make Tom & Iris step up and take some responsibility. :flowerforyou:
(((Rori))) Feel better soon!
Karen: Poor baby doll.
Heather: I hope you are able to find the right arms for your doll. Good luck with your search. It would be wonderful if you are able to restore her.
DH has fallen in love with chives. I’m doing what I can on the growing side, but it will take some time before they’re ready for harvest. I wonder whether any of you can recommend freeze dried chives at a reasonable price. The local grocery store has a big container of lower quality dried chives or a small and pricey container of really great dried chives. DH wants to be cheap about it. :ohwell:

KJ (Kelly), I used to do the same thing with the Costco holiday fruitcake. It weighs 3 pounds, and I would allow myself an ounce a day commencing with Christmas Day. I would slice and freeze each quarter separately and put wax paper between each slice. I think since my surgery I’ll forego that indulgence. My calories could be better spent on slices of med. rare prime rib!
Michele in NC, our Bariatric team tells us “It isn’t brain surgery!” That’s what I love about my practice. The first time you go in you get a LARGE 3-ring binder chock-full if information about every step of the procedures, pre-and post-surgery guidelines, supplement guidelines, and hospital information before and after surgery. I saw a dietician a week later who helped me tweak my calorie, fat, carb and protein needs to lose weight pre-surgery. I saw an ARNP that same day who answered a lot of my other questions and documented my health concerns, and set up an appointment with a psychiatrist for a 1-hour evaluation session. In addition, we have twice-monthly group sessions open to all levels, from pre-surgery to 10-12 years post op. The groups are facilitated by a psychologist and a dietician or ARNP, and are very fun and helpful. There’s one weekday evening one and one weekend one every month. Our team is the highest rated in the whole Northwest. I think it’s sad that many others don’t get the kind of help I’m getting to succeed.
At the same time, this group is crucial to my success also. I don’t get time with many older women. We as a group think differently, I believe, than most other demographics. We have the experience that hindsight and years of surviving in societies that often didn’t do the best they could for us. I call it “mother wit”, and it has nothing to do with whether you’ve born or parented a child. It has to do with how we feel about the good of the world in general. We may differ on what that is, but we seem to be aware of it more than most others.
Barbara AHMOD, I love the shirt. It describes you to a T!”
Rebecca, drink much water is the solution, if you’ll pardon the pun!
Lisa signing as rvfamily!, welcome! Let us know where you are, approximately, so we can separate you from the other Lisas.
Oh, Allie! im afraid you’re in a rather thankless spot. I’m so glad you’ve helped that man feel loved and cared about in the final chapter of his story.
I’m on my way to my 12-step meeting which is another huge help in my life. I hope to go out for pho afterward! It’s a great option for me, since I leave out the noodles!
May Day is near, and I love all the things I see blooming as I drive. My huge ornamental dark plum in front of my house is done blooming, but the lilacs will be our any day, and then about June 1st my climbing pink Lady Banksia rose, which almost envelopes my plum, will bloom. Heavenly fragrant nights ahead!

Hi Gals,
I’ve been so busy; but catching up and checking in with you.
Heather great train pictures. I love old trains.
Karen – great photos
Pip – great photos – you look like you are having fun.
Rori – I have only been in a helicopter a couple of times but LOVED it.
Tracey – in response to your question about US health care costs, so my insurance is from Covered California (part of “Obama care”) and gives me ok coverage after $6,000 per year deducible. So I do the things that are required to be free, Mammogram, pap smear, TB testing, and colonscopy - have signed a DNR even though there is nothing currently wrong with me. There are some free or sliding scale clinics that I would use if I needed to, but the closest one is over an hour each way drive and I am in a big city. Before Obama care the closest place to get a mammogram on a sliding scale had a 6 month wait.
Yvonne – you nailed it exactly!
“Happy National Zucchini Bread Day!....
Tracey - Our system is really simple: If we don't have the money for medical bills here and we don't qualify for some kind of public assistance, we defer care until we die. Even if we do qualify for public assistance, if we don't have the money to pay for the part they won't cover, we die."
-Yvonne in TX”
Rori – Take care!!! What a total drag!
Speaking of falls, while of course it is right to be careful, one of the exercises that Heather introduced me to and a variation from a yoga instructor is to work on balance, so balance on one leg and then without putting your foot down pretend write the alphabet with the raised leg. I still can’t get past J, but when I started I couldn’t get past c…

Rori - I'm so sorry to hear of your fall. You have a lot on your shoulders, especially since dh can't drive
Allie - you are so right to have Tom step up because you know that if he doesn't, no matter what, you'll have made the wrong decision and that you do not need

pip "back enter ... so I won't lose my posting streak" How the heck can you do that?
megamom that is quite a transformation. Bet you feel great!
Rori OWwww! Even with your sore ankles, please be sure to stop every hour or two and walk around. You really don't want to add blood clots to the equation, trust me!

Read all the posts but too pooped to respond. 3 lovely gorgeous spring days in the garden, line dancing tonight, and I can barely keep eyes open.

Kate UK - Yes, I did see the episode with the doll. What a story!!!! I don't think my story is quite emotional enough, but I did my best on the very long application form. I love that photo of my mum with Elizabeth, around 1930 I guess. My relationship with my mum was not always the easiest, but to see her as a happy child is very bonding. It was very trusting of her to give her to me when I was about 5 years old as she has a china head. Of course I adored her. I'm sure she thought she was doing the best when she got the arms replaced, but, even when I was 9, I could see it was not the right thing. The armholes wore away gradually, so they became even worse. It really makes me sad.
I have looked for a good Doll's Hospital around here and might give one a call if this punt doesn6work out. They have thousands of applications. I adore the programme and have it on record if we are out. Oh the skill! !!!!
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx
Beadowl - Thanks for that suggestion on the previous page! Will check it out.1 -
Kim from N California just tried to balance on one leg pretending to write the alphabet with the raised leg, it's not that easy! I got to G with my left leg before having to put my foot down. I was better on my right leg, but it got tired before I lost my balance deffo need to practice. I'm always falling over, but luckily haven't really hurt myself, so need to concentrate on my balance.
Rori sorry to hear about your fall, hope you can drive.
Heather the doll looked like something out of a horror film, I hope you manage to get her fixed.
Viv UK1 -
Meant to say Megamom great transformation, you can see the difference and as Michele suggested you should now call yourself minimom
I'm still plugging away trying to lose the lbs, think I must be doing something right though because I have lost 2lbs but not sure how. Maybe it's because I am logging my food (but often go over calories ) or it has been working in the garage moving boxes about, or combination of both. Whatever, I'll take it!
Viv UK1 -
Heather Didn't mean to be so insensitive about the doll...the sight of her was just so unexpected it set me off. I have way too many baby dolls from my childhood and I love every one of them. WIll be so hard to know what to do as I downsize. Anyway, sorry if I seemed like a clod.2
-
Karen - I was not upset by your comment. I took that photo for the programme researchers, so, in a way, it was meant to shock. I have been meaning to do something about her for decades. I still have a few other dolls and my teddy, but Elizabeth and another doll, Shirley, are the most precious to me. I remember Elizabeth with her old, badly damaged arms, and would love it if someone could find replacements. I will see if The Repair Shop gets back to me first as they don't charge for their expert help. I suspect they won't choose me though. If nothing else it prompted me to get Elizabeth out of the box where I put her for the move, wrapped in a duvet, and to dig through my box of old photos to find the one of my mother. There are some amazing photos in that box going back to my great grandparents, so I must do something with them. It's a huge project though. However I really enjoyed the memories the photos evoked. You can do so much these days with photo books and a good phone app.
I wonder whether anyone in my family will be interested in their heritage. I have a feeling that Edie might be the one as she is a people person. So many stories of which I am the last who remembers.
I can only put so much of other people's stories in my memoirs. I will do my best with my mum and dad, but there are so many others. I feel all need a voice.
So, no, you weren't a clod at all.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx3 -
Good morning all! Happy Friday! Is everyone doing the Friday dance?
Rori- Ugh! So sorry about your ankles! Hope the icing and elevating has helped and your drive home is safe and somewhat comfortable for you! Sending Love
Mega mom- Wow! Great job! You look fantastic and I bet you feel it, too! Definitely be proud of yourself; that takes work!
Heather- You have spoken of Elizabeth before and it seems I have seen a photo of her (or perhaps I just imagined her from your descriptions?). So...it was with a sympathetic "Oh, poor dolly!" but then a little chuckle at this little doll that was obviously well loved that I looked at the photos. I hope you can find someone to repair her.
Speaking of dolls- Heather's doll photos reminded me of my mother and her doll adventures. My mother was a tomboy. She didn't play with dolls; or rather she didn't play well with dolls. When my mother was a child, she would sneak into her older sister Shirley's room and take a doll. She would then operate on it, remove the squeaker (the box that said "mama" when the doll was moved a certain way), sew up the incision and have a funeral for and bury the doll in the yard. For a long time my aunt didn't know what was happening to her dollies, until she caught Dr. Mom performing the "squeak-ectomy" on dolly number six. The fun was over. The doctor got a spanking. lol
I was interrupted by the laundry needing folding. A hug to the rest of you as I have to get on with my day. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)5 -

Managed to stand on left leg and complete alphabet with right, had to go out so didn't try the other leg. I use an electric toothbrush which vibrates in 30 sec intervals so that you clean teeth for full 2 mins, so I stand one leg for minute then the other, works well as if you get a bit wobbly you can grab basin. I've really improved my balance over last 2 years as I had a bad fall and lost a lot of confidence.
KELLY I used to operate on my dolls too and my daughter hated dolls but turned into a great Mum
Raining again today, missing last weekends sunshine but the garden needed it so must be positive
Kate UK2 -
Kim and others - I was taught to do the alphabet exercise by a hospital physio. Now I have modified it by standing on one leg, bouncing up and down, and using my 2kg weights in both hands to do side arm raises at the same time. Kills two birds ..... I'm doing about 15 on my weak left leg.
Rori - Get well soon. Why do these things always happen when things are going well. Grrrrrrrrrr!
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx3
