Rori....(((HUGS)))) as well. Sending prayers and good thoughts your way for speedy healing for your feet. <3

So glad Mars found his back way home and had a snack while waiting!! B)

Are there any adult day-cares in your area - a place for your DH to spend several hours and be watched and given activities if you need to be way on medical or other appointments? Those are starting up in some of the larger cities out here. It's not surprising memory care facilities have a waiting list. :(

Feel free to vent with us any time. Wishing you peace.

@GodMomKim Your dictionary is correct. Bathers - general bathing attire both male and female
Cossie - ladies one piece bathing suit.

Rori: My heart goes out to you, dear girl. I have lost several friends and relatives. Such a sad end for everyone. 💖

@cityjaneLondon I watched Montalban tonight, Heather. Not usually a fan of subtitled progs, but this one caught my interest.

@kevrit 👍🏻 Good goals! I hope you get that bowel issue sorted. My bathers are still okay, but I reckon I may need a new cossie soon, as they are on the verge of loose.

    ☘️ Terri

Terri, does bathers= bathing suit? And what is a ‘cossie,?

Rita- if you are eating Keto that is possibly why you have bowel issues. If you read up on it that does happen with a lot of people. Your body uses most of your food and you need to drink a lot of water. What was recommended to me is to take Epson salt baths or some type of magnesium supplement. When I did this I never had issues again. And I have to add, you are doing fantastic!

    Mary from Minnesota/Arizona

I can’t take magnesium, side effects make bowel problems worse. I am testing lactose intolerance now, especially since I’ve added heavy cream and a lot of cheeses to my diet.
    Hi all, happy June :):|

@kevrit Where do you swim? First swimsuit in 30 years? Does that mean you haven't swum in 30 years or have had the same swimsuit for 30 years or swum in clothes? What color is the new suit?

I swim at the lake in the park I’m hosting at. The suit is blue. Pics below!

Michele- very interesting about Jeopardy! Is there a time limit for them to play or can they play until they lose? I am very interested in your banana chocolate cake! I made just a banana cake the other day with the recipe from online. It was such a large amount of battery that it almost overflowed my cake pan! I really like it I put cream cheese frosting on it. It was a very dense, moist cake. Would you be willing to share your banana chocolate cake recipe?? I love chocolate! I hope you get to have your pool party with your neighbors! When we are in Arizona we love getting together with the other residents.

Wow--everybody is so busy! Finally settled in for the night and discovered 42 posts today!

Rori-my heart goes out to you. My husband did not have dementia per se, but the last two years of his life, his memory started going. I was concerned what I would do if it continued. It is sad watching someone you love diminish. I think you are wise to start checking out options.

I had a buy day--1 1/2 hour walk. With housework, etc., ended up over 20,000 steps. I have set a goal for myself to do that twice a month. Met that goal in May and am half way there for June!

Gave kitchen and living area a very deep cleaning today--windows, shampooed rugs, etc. Will tackle ironing and bedroom tomorrow.

The guy on Jeopardy is pretty interesting, I don't watch the show regularly, but caught him at SIL house last night (she will not miss the show).

Off to sleep. Positive thoughts to all.

Rori, hugs out to you. Its really a ruthless disease. My father had it, and escaped from his low security care facility, one night. Went down to break into a car dealership place. He got to ride in a cop car back to his care facility, and was promptly changed over to the higher security place. Poor guy. We told him no more breaking out! Things that happened to him years ago were crystal clear, but 5 minutes ago he couldn't recall. He because very racial and would swear at anyone not Caucasian. He also became quite comical, which was like getting to meet a side of your father you never knew was there. Please know we are all here for you, and this will always be your haven to vent.💖

    Hi Gals,

Michele – the crab on the top of the pot is adorable!!!

Rori – so glad that everything turned out ok, but as I was reading your story I was in tears; how difficult this must be. Looking into options is a good idea, residential and day programs; but also maybe a medical alert style bracelet that has your contact info on it? Is he still able to read and comprehend it? If not you could put on it my name is ______ I have dementia please call my wife at______________.

Kim: I don’t have any idea whether CBD oil would help anxiety but I suspect it could be helpful. I can attest that that it is helping my dog with back pain and did so from the fist dose. Good luck with your decision.

Rebecca: Enjoy your visit with Athena Rose. I’m confident you’ll be able to help your son with cooking. :star:

(((Rori))) I am so sorry things are going poorly for your DH & heartbreaking for you. This is a tough situation. I know you’ll make the best possible decisions. :broken_heart: Sending love and big hugs your way.

Pip: I’m glad you had a great trip!!!

Today was a lucky day. DH & I took a walk to the end of the road where there is a dog park. He stayed at the bottom of the hill, and the dog & I went on up. There was a beautiful doe in the park and she hid from us—in a spot where we could easily see her. We tried to keep from scaring her and went back down the trail to the road. It was a magical experience.

:) The neighborhood picnic went well today. I discovered that I am not as bad at making conversation as I always think I am, but I really don't like spending two hours talking about stuff. I'd much rather be walking or working in my yard. Jake reminded me that the reason we went was to be part of the community. That's a good reason. We still had time to work in the yard and watch an episode of "The Great British Baking Show".

:)Pip, glad you had a great trip and took the steps to restore your log in streak for the days you didn't have internet access.

:)Michele,The crab in the pot is adorable. You have a great imagination.

:)Ginny, I'm like your SIL. I never miss "Jeopardy". We record it and watch it when it's convenient (usually at lunch).

:)Charity, Welcome. I hope you'll keep coming back. Working in the yard is a great way to stay active.

    Chocolate Banana Bundt cake

    1-3/4 cup AP flour
    1 cup granulated sugar
    3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    1-1/2 tsp baking powder
    1-1/2 tsp baking soda
    1 tsp salt
    1 cup buttermilk
1-1/2 cup mashed very ripe bananas (about 3 medium)
3/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
    1 egg
    1 egg white
    1/4 cup vegetable oil
    1/4 cup corn syrup
    1T vanilla extract

Heat oven to 350. Coat a 12cup bundt pan with butter flavored nonstick cooking spray. In a medium bowl, whisk together AP flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt. In a large bowl, blend buttermilk, bananas and dark brown sugar. Beat in egg and egg white. Stir in oil, corn syrup and vanilla. Gradually fold in flour mixture until just combined (small lumps are OK).

Pour into prepared pan. Bake 45 minutes or until wooden skewer inserted into cake comes out clean. Let cool in pan on a wire rack for 20 to 25 minutes (I found 30 is even better). Remove from pan to cool completely on wire rack.

    Makes 16 servings

    Per serving:
    240 cal
    4g protein
    48 g carb
    5 g fat (1g sat)
    2g fiber

Jeopardy ... haven't seen it since sometime when I last lived in Canada a decade ago.

Epson salt baths or some type of magnesium supplement ... be careful with these. They don't "aid in digestion", they speed up digestion. I spent a day lying next to the toilet after I misguidedly applied the theory, "If one is good, more must be better" with magnesium supplements.

Iron ... I've always had slightly high iron levels. Before I knew that, I was encouraged to take iron because the frequency of my periods must mean that I was anaemic. But I'd take iron, and feel really horrible. Finally I had my blood checked and sure enough ... slightly high. Whenever my periods decided to stop, I suppose I'm going to have to watch my iron levels.

Rita ... congrats on the bathing suit!

Connie ... well done with the elliptical.

    Sharon ... beautiful garden!

Lisa ... I heard somewhere that people's taste buds taste things differently, and that tasting vegetables as bitter or bad tasting in some way is quite common. Ah, here it is ...

Thanks to everybody who congratulated me on my victory over the elliptical. It feels great and no blood sugar issues tonight when I exercised. I’m still not sure why it happened Friday night.

Rori - Dementia is so difficult and heartbreaking. My uncle passed away in November from cancer, but he had struggled with dementia for years. He begged me to please call my dad one night. My dad’s been deceased for 15 years. So, so difficult. Many cities and hospitals have support groups for families.

We had a celebration of life for my uncle today. It was so tough to get through, but a very beautiful service. The soloist was fantastic. I don’t sing at family funerals unless specifically requested in the deceased’s funeral plans. It’s just easier on the family.

Machka[/b] - I've been keenly following your experiences with the RTW folks and your busy, busy schedule. I was not surprised when you said the RTW provider was in her 20's. I also wonder if they have any providers are in their 40's and have plenty of life and patient experience who can make a more accurate and fitting assessment of your DH's progress and obstacles? Also, is the goal for him to get back to his previous orchard job - or equivalent, perhaps not so physical?

I remember when I managed our 911 Emergency Dispatch Center, I would often get calls from RTW folks, wanting to place people who were hurt on the job and now had physical limitations which prevented them from returning to that job. They thought an emergency dispatch job might be suitable....something where they could "sit down", lol. The RTW folks obviously never been in a highly stressful, fast-paced workplace environment like that. I invited them to come spend time in the center and advised them that out of every 100 applications for the job, perhaps 2 demonstrated the ability to gain the skills and had the personality to work there. And at the end of a year of training, only 1 would remain.

Anyhow, sounds like these RTW folks were much like yours.

Yes, the people you have experience with sound a lot like the ones I've got experience with!! I have a friend who has worked in different emergency dispatch centres, and after hearing some of her stories wouldn't even dream of suggesting that as a recovery position!!

Unfortunately, there don't appear to be any older RTW people with this company. I get the impression that newly graduated OTs etc. get jobs in places like these, and then, after a few years they eventually get themselves into real OT jobs in hospitals, physiotherapy places etc.

Unfortunately my husband can't go back to his previous orchard job (GM of the orchard). The law here allows companies to let an injured person go if they are still injured after 12 months so that the company can hire someone new for the position and get on with their lives/business. And his company did that. That's OK. It's their right to do that. Plus I'm not sure going back to that position would have been good for him anyway.

So now what? The RTW people work for the insurance company and their goal is to get him into a position equal to or greater than (in terms of pay) what he had before ... and to do it as quickly as possible. But because he was GM, a physical and cognitive position, they can't suggest "duties that are merely of a token nature or do not involve useful work or duties that are demeaning in nature". Whatever he ultimately gets into should be somewhat comparable to what he had before. That poses a problem for the RTW org because their "usual" bag of tricks aren't applicable in this case.

Also, we're still not sure he will ever be well enough to work full-time again. For one thing, he fatigues really quickly ... after 2-3 hours of work, he needs a 2-hour nap. We'll have to wait and see. Essentially, he's in a trial phase now to see how he handles easing slowly back into things, and so far it has gone a lot slower than his RTW girl had hoped. Initially she figured he'd be back into full-time work by September, but then he had the seizure which set back his start by a month, and the reality is, his accident resulted in a permanent severe brain injury and progress is slow. That's just how it is. We're just amazed he has made as much progress as he has ... there was a very good chance he could have ended up in permanent care.

Oh, he's helping out on a local golf course with a volunteer group once or twice a week. It sounds like a good group and he seems to enjoy going. :) So it's a start. :)

My director informed me of nothing but when I asked in march what was required for June she said 100 pages. I had never heard that before. So I try to produce. I sent off 4 pages a moment ago, so I have 22 more to produce by June 10 so I get them back from corrector by June 17th to post the whole 71 required further pages needed by the post by June 20.

I'm not sure I understand about "pages".

When I write papers, during the research phase, I can easily rack up a massive number of pages ... and the refining process doesn't go neatly into pages until right near the end when it all seems to fall into place. I don't think I could write 4 pages a day ...

    Hi Gals,

Machka – so I liked the idea of emergency numbers in a list on the fridge that I did it here… So after you wean yourself and DH off the list I guess you should come to CA and get me off it too… What a stupid request!

As for my calendar if I don’t have it I could completely melt down… I made a mammogram appointment and the first one they have is in October no possible way I would remember that without it on the calendar!

    :grin::grin:

Didn't phone books used to have a page of emergency numbers? It seems to me they did and that my mother posted it or something very similar next to the phone when I was growing up. I'd been thinking of putting up a list of emergency numbers for years, but just never got around to it until recently.

Have I mentioned lately how much I hate dementia? Latest saga is a long one in the spoiler below. Thanks in advance for letting me vent. <3
Yesterday was my long awaited Reiki/massage therapy appointment. Reminded DH umpteen times what time I was leaving and what time I could be expected back. He went out for a walk with the cat, and one hour later, still wasn't back. Not entirely unusual as Mars the Leash Loving cat hasn't had his usual amount of time outdoors due to my limited mobility. It was a beautiful day, and I thought he was taking DH on either a long walk, or a long sit under a shady tree. I left a note, a sandwich and a reminder about where I was going.

Came out of my session feeling great. Then noticed 4 voicemails all left while I was in zen mode. Messages from Deputy Sheriff Taylor. HOLY *kitten*! DH somehow got separated from Mars, was disoriented in a distant side of our condominium complex, and was spotted by a neighbor trying to let himself into someone else's unit, all the while swearing "this is my place". Fortunately, he wasn't combative.

Sheriff looked up DH's name and address, and calmly walked him back to our place. Checked with neighbor next door who vouched for DH. They got inside and saw the note, sandwich and his picture on the wall, which further enforced their decision that they had the right home. The voicemails were to let me know they got him home, but the cat was still missing. I raced home, got inside, and there was DH calmly sweeping the floor, completely oblivious to anything that had happened. No recall! Just before I was heading out the door to find Mars, the neighbor who found DH knocked on our door and said "I think your cat is on my deck". Yep, same neighbor that called the Sheriff for DH, also had my bratty cat happily licking down a bowl of milk and plate of chicken. Huge relief, followed by heart to heart with DH. Not an easy conversation, as there are some keywords that will shut him down. But, I did remind him that this week he has been up at weird hours and showing symptoms of burnout. He even forgot my name one evening. Don't know if I made any impression. He still pretty much denies anything is wrong, which seems to be a typical symptom (go figure!). I know the memory care facilities around here have long waiting lists, so this month I'll start fact-finding. I hate, hate, hate dementia.

And, just to close out this little saga, Deputy Sheriff Taylor came to our door to speak to me in person. His version of the accounts left me feeling very sad.

    Rori

I'm so sorry. My heart goes out to you!

While you're waiting for memory care facilities, are there any home care options?

    Thank you Barbie!

Camping trip was fun... and telling. Not sure we'll ever need to camp in a campground again. Thursday was fine, but Friday (before Camp Free Day today) was lots of stinky diesels, shrieking children. Public camping just can't compare with OUR peaceful campground. All it needs is a fire pit ;) One good thing from the trip, Joe is redesigning, remodeling the interior of the van to accommodate a larger bed, a TV and a more comfortable portapotty setup. He'll remove the kitchenette (sink, broken fridge, microwave and cabinets) to accommodate a larger mattress. Any food prep will have to be done outside on camp table. He seems quite happy and excited about this project which makes me glad. He needed a new project.

Just skimmin', and only through pg 1 of June.

Julie finishing your Phd will give you a tremendous sense of satisfaction, something "they" can never take away from you. Never give up!
Suebdew Oh! What a little love! Well done!
Tracey love your good attitude about the job. Be proud to know you could make such a good impression even without years of experience. The right fit will come for you when the time is right.
    Rita Con VERY gratulations. Inspiring!
