I did a heart rate calculator and according to my age it should be between 81 and 126. I did stay on the elliptical for 5 minutes today and on the treadmill for 5 minutes. Lisa ~ thanks for the advice on using the arm movements intermittently...I will try that.

A lot of those formulas are just based on averages. Each of us is different.
That 220-age one they used to use would put my max HR at 168 and then I'm supposedly not supposed to go over 80% of that which is 134.4.
I get to 134 walking briskly and I'm regularly in the 140-150 range cycling relatively casually. Put me on a hill and I'm up to 180 ... which is well over my calculated max.
If the only thing holding you back from doing 10 minutes on the elliptical is your HR ... and your Dr says it is OK!! ... I'd suggest just going for the 10 minutes and seeing how you feel.
But make sure your Dr is OK with it first.

Super fun day today. We drove to the KY Aviation Museum in Lexington to see a World War 2 plane that flew in European battles. I took my nephew and my mom. My daughter stayed home. Decided we are going to take some sort of short trip most Fridays this summer. We had such a great time!!

Tracy- so excited for you and glad they can work around the wedding.
Kim in CA - great job. It never ceases to amaze me how wise the women in this group are and how willing they are to help with so many different situations.
Janetr- so sorry for all your sad news.
My baby puppy is busy, busy, busy. Good news is he sleeps from 9:30 to 5:30. DH gets up at 5:30 so that works lol.
I have been missing Meg too.

My oldest daughter, in Denver, is at an Andrea Bocelli concert as I type. Oh how I'd love to be there with her. He always brings me to tears.

Saturday is a non writing day, so I will be reading the newspaper and washing my hair instead.
It's going to be lovely weather for a change. I've planned to make pork and cider stew, so that's not very summery, but it's not a heatwave yet!
Rebecca - I use my Instant Pot almost every day for something. Today will be the stew. Sometimes it's just a few new potatoes, or a few eggs. I make yoghurt regularly. One big advantage for me is I don't have to watch it. I love the keep warm function. But there is a steep learning curve. One way to learn is to watch videos on YouTube. There is an app also and many great sites devoted to it. When I first got it the learning was a full time job. Initially I got a lot of hints from the original Facebook site. There are now several different sites, keto, slimming diets, etc etc. You can do some amazing things with it. I save the recipes I like by bookmarking them on Google.
We are looking forward to having Max tomorrow. DH has been preparing by printing out some board game squares templates. He intends to invent a board game with him.I have prepared by buying cheesy rolls for lunch. Perhaps we could picnic in the garden.
The light outside is Mediterranean. Clear. Brilliant. Gorgeous. About to take DH up his morning cup of tea. I've been awake since 5 am. Don't really mind, it's so lovely.

@1948Peachy I was thinking the same thing about not using the arms, also you could slow down the speed to lower heart rate. I would guess that the added arm movements are increasing the heart rate.1

@JRsLateInLifeMom that restaurant has a nice spirit.there's an alternative place near me with a chalk board where you can pay forward.when buying a coffee you can decide if you want to buy a coffee or meal for a future person who needs one, and if someone comes later without means he or she can ask for a one of those pre-paid coffees or meals.3

I usually weigh myself daily but not these past few days. I've gone considerably over these past few days.
this time it's more because I'm in a good mood than bad.
This week I
1) finished and sent off the 100 pages
2) finished sending something to the new better lawyer (I had to comment the file so he could see where we were at)
3) found out that we progressed in a major way on a union thing I've been working on for 3 years. I have not been working alone by any means but I was without a doubt the main person working on it.
4) minor, I spoke to another senior thesis director and he said he'd give me his thoughts on my thesis plan and thesis question since my teacher is not helping me at all. he was sympathetic and surprised when I told him that my teacher was inviting most/all the other students under her to speak and publish, and said he would give pay attention to making sure things that he could work on were more public.
5) another thesis director (in charge of bachelor's classes) said she'd give me a class to teach if something in my area came up, that the permanent or on-contract teachers couldn't teach.
6) I knew my candidacy was refused for a broad qualification process but had no information as to why. the note said I don't have adequate teaching experience. (but would indicate that my research and other experience and qualifications are sufficient). I have masses of teaching experience, that is what I do and have done for 30 + years, but not specifically in the very specialised area, so, presumably they didn't consider the notion of transferable skills. (if I am skilled in an area, and I am skilled in teaching another area, it's quite conceivable I can be skilled in teaching in the other area). I'll get more detailed info I about 3 weeks, they say. what it means is that I either need to get a class or two in this area, and/OR be able to better explain my thoughts about my teaching project, both are surmountable goals.3 -

beautiful Machka~ looks so relaxing...
I just have to distance myself from my SIL she just likes to egg me on..i got a letter from probate court that our attorney is trying to get my brother more of a settlement which is great..but she is now arguing with me about why Sean had to pay the retainer... he didn't he sold some of my dads things to pay for it, not like he used Jeans money and he has none of his own..
Really, this is petty stuff, told her I don't want money to come between Sean and I , and she just keeps pushing so I just dropped the subject and will go to work,,6 -

Janet- So sorry to hear of your bad news! SEnding thoughts/prayers of healing, strength, courage and skilled physicians to you! Take what you need!
Rebecca- I don't have an INstant Pot; but I have a Black and Decker brand pressure cooker. lol It looks and works the same as the INstant Pot. I use mine every week to make yogurt. Then I also use it for potatoes and other veg, mainly. (So fast). I don't use it for meat too much. I find that when I am making a meal with meat, most times it takes me less time to put it in the oven or in a pan to cook than it does for the IP to do it's thing. Plus, if it is a full on dinner, I just get everything cooking at the same time on the stove and it's done. BUT...the IP is good for when I need to cook AND do something else. Just put everything in and let it go. Then I can finish cleaning, laundry, etc.
Renee- I am one of those that needs to lose about 80 pounds. I love this group of ladies! They keep me honest with myself and help me see that weight loss is also a exercise of your mind/mindset. Your brain/mindset has an awful lot to do with how successful you are at creating/maintaining a healthy lifestyle!!
I just realized it has been over a year since I have worked out to the point that my muscles were sore. I think I need to push myself harder....
Trentin today. He arrives at 10am, so I am going to try to get out this morning and get my shopping done BEFORE he gets here, so that we can spend the day at a park or hiking somewhere. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)6 -

Morning, afternoon and evening, all,
Just in my happy place this morning, and the house Internet is working, so happier than yesterday at the same time.
Corey didn't want to go out last night for his 50th birthday (he is not fond of ambient noise, hates crowds, and once it gets past 6 p.m., every restaurant is crowded) so we'll go out tonight, but earlier. We were talking last night about aging and what's changed about us. His comment was that the older folks who eat at 4:30 p.m. are the smart ones, as they avoid the noise and the hustle-bustle of the crowds. But then, neither one of us was ever fond of the bar/nightclub/crowded restaurant thing after we got past our early 20s. My exception was a stretch of my 40s, when I lived close to a number of my family members, and we went out to sing a lot. Even then, I was always the designated adult.
But it got me thinking... By every standard of our society, when I turn 60 next year, I will officially move into the category of "old." (No offense meant to those who already are 60-plus--it's not a bad thing, it's just a thing.) My husband may be nine years younger physically, but our maturity and thought levels are at the same space 99% of the time, so he's the perfect partner for me. I know this, because my ex-husband was five years older than I was physically, and already speaking longingly of assisted living facilities when he was in his 40s. Not a good fit for me.
I don't have any conclusion to this... just thinking about what "old" means, and how I fit within that span. I'm certainly not young, and OK with that. Just not sure that I know what "old" means for me. And my stated philosophy for years has always been "labels are for pickle jars, not people," so there's that.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR7 -
Happy Saturday!!!
