Proud of myself for going out running today. I've missed a few days because of the heat. My legs have been aching and tired. Even my walking was difficult. Today I just got up and went. Shuffled along very slowly to start with, but got into my stride and finished the 5k.
Lots of people in the calm sea and a boat moored off shore to let the passengers do canoeing out there.
I don't really understand why, but I find running easier on my hips, back and knees than walking. Looking at those dancing videos of myself I think it must be my sticking out bottom. I cannot run fast to save my life, but somehow the forward tilt of my jog, and landing more on the front part of my foot, is easier on my hips. I did enjoy it.
This evening's dinner was Tandoori Chicken Kebabs. My son had advised me to use beetroot powder to colour the kebabs, (they have been looking rather pallid) so I ordered it from Amazon. It worked fine with almost no taste. I love tandoori. It's one of those things I can eat even when I don't fancy much else.
Hoping to watch a Wallander DVD this evening. I hope I can understand some of it! I've been doing Swedish on Duolingo now for two years! I still can't speak it very well, but I understand a bit. DH really liked the Swedish series as well, much better casting than the British one. We've seen three different Wallanders!

Thank you so much for the birthday wishes. I was feeling down because all of our family came last year for my hubby 80th. My kids in CO were texting that they wished they could’ve come. One sent pictures of them camping on the Ranport Range in CO. So about 2 pm DH said get dressed up I have something planned for you. So we left home and he said it is a scavenger hunt. First stop was Florist where I was given a corsage and a banner to wear that said, “80 years loved”. Then to the bank for cash. Next stop was a shop on our square where I was presented with. Silver necklace with 8 silver rings, one for each decade. Next we went to my favorite restaurant where we were escorted to a side room. SURPRISE. All of my family and over 40 of my friends were there. It was decorated so beautifully and open bar with lots of food. I will try to post the video of when I arrived. Then 7 of the CO family came back to my house to stay for two days. Needlesstosay, had I known, the house would’ve been neater. I did wonder why DH was vacuuming the living room that morning. Now I have two birthday cakes in my freezer.
Beth- Happy Birthday to you. Enjoy your special day.
KJ and Rori - thank you for your sweet comments. I am so happy I got to meet you both.
We are at my son’s ranch and everyone went to run errands and I stayed home with my puppy. He is doing so good after the crowd left the house he looked all over for them. Lol
Have a great day. By the way, my golf girls are taking me to lunch Monday to celebrate my birthday. I will be afraid to get on the scales.

Sue: What a wonderful birthday surprise! I am so happy for you!

Sue- What a fun surprise! I like to arrange surprises like that for big milestone moments for my DH; I can only hope that by the time I hit 80, he will have a clue and arrange one for me. I love surprises! Who knows, maybe if I plan a skydiving trip he will come along and push me out of the plane!2

Happy day after the 4th. Our neighbors had a party lastnight and shot off fireworks until after 2. My poor furbaby was so scared. We drove to Kansas city yesterday (5hours one way) to visit my nephew and family were visiting from California and my niece. It was a really good visit, then a mile from home we hit a deer. First time that has ever happened to me. DH and I are fine, my poor little car isn't. So today during his lunchtime DH will go visit our insurance company and see what we do next. I think with all the fireworks it was confused. After we got home I heard on the scanner that another car hit a horse. So we were lucky.
Heather--Very nice picture of DS and DDIL. Glad you were able to help so they could have a night out to celebrate.
Sue--I am so sorry for your Loss. Sending hugs and prayers
Allie--I agree getting out of there was a good idea. Not going to end well for anyone.
Sue--What a great surprise for your birthday. Sounds like lots of fun.
Well ladies I have decided to give blood after work today. The Red Cross is having a blood drive here today. I have not ever done it before. So see how that goes. Enjoy your weekend. I have Saturday and Sunday off.

Sue in TX - I'm so glad you enjoyed your birthday surprise. I would just about kill my DH if he did anything like that to me. I am such a control freak! I would have made all my birthday arrangements months in advance and woe betide anybody who tried to interfere! I always do all the bookings and organising and, on the rare occasion when DH has organised something, it's never quite worked out the way I would do it. He is not a good planner. I hate surprises in general, apart from small presents.
I admire people who can 'go with the flow' , but my motto is 'be prepared, be very prepared'. For my 70th I booked the cruise over a year in advance to avoid having to do all the work of organising my own birthday celebration. I didn't trust anyone else to do it for me.
Well done you for being such a good sport. You are obviously very much loved. And so you should be.

Official weigh in today: down another 1/2 lb. just call me a turtle, but this is the way I like to lose weight. For dinner last night, I had a hamburger (on a real bun), corn on the cob, a nice green salad with homemade dressing, and chia seed pudding with blueberries and almonds. And I still had a loss on the scale. I am living a life with my eating under control but the plan is not controlling me.
One thing that I have discovered about weight loss is that there is no one size fits all “diet.” I’m happy that Keto works for some of you. I tried it and did not care for it. Same for intermittent fasting - just not me. I’ve set my macros for 50% carbs, 30% fat, and 20% protein. Most days I hit it pretty close, but don’t sweat it if I don’t. CICO works for me, but I end up hungry and dissatisfied if I make too many unhealthy, high calorie choices. I do better with getting my sweets from fruit and my carbs from complex, hearty sources like Ezekiel bread, brown or black rice, and quinoa. Disclaimer for those just joining the thread - I am not at goal weight. I’ve been at this for years! There are plenty of plans that will result in faster results. I’ve been there, done some of them and yo-yoed myself up to 250 lbs. my journey has not been linear, but I am 50 lbs lighter than I was when I started and I feel pretty healthy right now. My plan is to continue with my current way of eating and to be happy with where my body settles in.9 -
So I’m 54 and started menopause about 1 year ago ... I have sugar cravings all the time which is my downfall. I also boredom eat. Can’t seem to motivate myself to exercise, and work an extremely exhausting job right now in a deli in a busy convenience/gas station in the Bakker Oilfield in North Dakota. I work 9 hours a day on my feet generally without a break only because we are always short staffed. (Why do people not want to work now a days). I hardly eat anything at work 5am -2:30 pm so when I get home I’m starving and just grab whatever is “convenient” which is generally not diet worthy. Then I’m exhausted and end up taking a 2 hour nap. I think part of being tired is the menopause. I have severe depression but I can’t blame that because I take medication for it. My husband doesn’t help because he buys junk food even though he doesn’t really eat it so who eats it but me. My granddaughter who is 11 stays with me in the summer so she has snacks but who eats them ... this girl. She likes to eat healthy, tries to get me to go to the track which is directly across the street from my home, but I’m always to tired or lazy. I could really use some support with losing eight lifestyle.8

Dr.Katie: I meant to ask you: What do you put in your daily smoothies? Count me among the turtles, too. As long as I keep trending down on the scale, I will continue doing what I'm doing which generates an average of half a pound lost per month., sometimes in spite of myself. Since breaking both ankles and a toe 10 weeks ago, exercise burn has been minimal, so CICO has been crucial. I also place alot of value on how clothes fit, and will take small jeans over a number on the scale, which can be sooo arbitrary. I weigh daily in the morning and log it on a calendar in my bathroom. I love going back to see what the weight was 3-4 years ago on this day.
I got my ankles and feet x-rayed today, and although the fractures look pretty good, the soft tissue around the avulsion fracture on my left foot is still tender to the touch. So, look I'll spend another 4 weeks in stiff shoe, with modified therapeutic exercises. (heavy sigh)

I'm so pleased that 4 July isn't a big thing in U.K. We do have large official fireworks displays at Hallowe'en/Guy Fawkes Day, and at New Year, but individuals have to get a costly licence to buy fireworks, so mostly confined to one evening for each event. I love the big displays, but do feel for people with pets. But it's better than it was before the licensing began as the fireworks would go on for several weeks beforehand.
Loving all the gossip, and photos, etc, but no time for individual comments after reading all the missed posts.
Condolences to those mourning significant others. 💕💖💕
I am having to get to grips with looking after DYDs dogs. She had to return to Germany for a funeral, as her DGMiL passed away when they were over visiting last week. The old dear, (in her 90's) had terminal stomach cancer. They couldn't find kennels for the dogs at short notice, so we stepped into the breach. It's been a little fraught, as she only got one of the dogs about 8 weeks ago, and we haven't really got to know him yet. He's very nervous, especially of men, as he was badly treated by his first owner. He has latched on to me, so I'm his foster mummy while he's with us. The other dog knows us well, and loves DH, so we have one each to look after.
Weight trend continues to be slowly downwards.
65 lbs discarded (not lost, ain't looking to get them back. Lol!). 7 lbs more to go!
Keep on keeping on.

Did a spinning workout today. The plan for tomorrow is to do a More Than Mat Pilates DVD.
Welcome everyone new! Come back often
Debbie VA – I’m so sorry about your brother
Margaret – so glad your son is home, and I’m sure you’re glad too
Was looking at the lawn (weeds). They really need to be cut. I’m sure Vince is waiting so that he can do it.
Suebdew – sounds like a lovely birthday
Rori – so sorry you have to stay in those shoes, but it’ll be worth it in the end
Friends of mine are coming here tomorrow. I seriously haven’t seen them in almost 50 years. We went to elementary and then high school together. I made a lasagna since the weather sounds “iffy” and a key lime pie.

DrKatiebug - Ditto from me Keto gave me headaches but working for 2of my cousins. Not sure what my diet is called just eating healthier making lower calorie y higher daily vitamin changes. I eat same time as I always have.Brunch,Dinner,y a bed time light food. If it matches intermittent it’s not on purpose or might not even be close to it lol. Actually watching calorie intake first time in my life. Breastfed 3weeks 🤱 whammy my weight went up not down lol. Excersice got cleared for it finally so walking y light stuff. (2yrs 3months to heal enough for a medical go light).Got what works for me which is a little of it all lol. Cut down on carbs but still eating them.
Kewtlady- menopause with a 2yr old (2nd time around with menopause was post menopause when I got pregnant 🤰 so restart button) yes tiredness is the worst part of it. Like when your in your period you get so tired you just want to go to bed 24/7!
Try preparing food on a free moment freezing it for the week heat that premade goodness all week long or when you get off work! Don’t eat the snacks If they pile up he’ll get the Hint stop 🛑 buying them. Your not lazy being on your feet all day at a job theirs nothing left mentally after all the chaos perfectly normal. I used to take slow walk with my daughter on my days off only we went around 1-2xs in a park that was a long drive but beautiful scenery let her talk away. Found it relaxing that way. Joined a gym back then to use the pool y hot tub after hard work days to unwind. Now just walking around the house in the air conditioner to cut out heat exhaustion y hot flashes 🥵. Write every shopping week a list of low calorie snacks from baked chips to 50cal ice creams y veggies 🌽 keep handing it to him don’t eat the junk food let it pile up he’ll finally realize he’s spending money on stuff no one wants (man slow on the uptake thing I have all male cousins mainly they take awhile to catch on to our hints we really do think differently). Having a multi preprinted list you keep handing him he’ll finally come back with something on the list to test the waters lol.

I've never planned anything a year in advance!! I've never been in a position where I knew what would happen that far out.
I've had an idea or two of what I might do, but I don't book anything until maybe a month or two in advance. And in the last year or so, it's been less than that!
A year ago, I posted this on my Facebook ... and it was exactly like that. One day at a time. Sometimes one hour at a time. Now I can usually plan a week ... maybe even two. But not much more than that.
Sue in TX ... I love it! I'm so glad your husband and family planned all that for you.

@Vickil57 way to go, donating blood!! I get to teach blood banking theory and technique in fall semester. Blood products are in critical short supply over the summer. Only 5% of all eligible donors ever donate. I totally understand for anybody who cannot donate, but kudos to all of you who do.
Heat index was over 100 today. They said it was our 10th straight day over 90; the worst it has been since 2012. I drove my car to the repair shop to get new brakes and walked home. It’s only 1.5 miles, but it might as well have been 5 miles. After supper and after the sun started setting, I mowed my mom’s yard. The shower when I got home felt so good!!
Does anybody know how to add “mowing grass with a push mower” to MFP?? Amazingly it is not listed as exercise! I counted it as a long walk based on my pedometer.
Connie in KY0 -
Rori, the smoothies vary depending on what I have on hand, but here is a rough recipe.
1 cup of liquid, usually coconut milk, but maybe almond milk or water
Greens: 2 cups. My favorite is organic power greens but could use spinach or other baby greens.
Fruit: 1 cup fresh or frozen - usually berries, but could be peach, mango, apple
Protein: 1 scoop of plant based protein powder, either vanilla or chocolate or 1/2 cup plain, full fat Greek yogurt
Fiber: 1 tbsp chia or flax seed (I prefer chia)
Sweetener: 1/2 banana - could use honey or maple syrup or stevia or leave this out entirely if there is sweetener in the protein powder. I usually alternate between banana and avocado to get a creamy texture without the double calories.
If I have it, I’ll add 1/2 an avocado for some healthy fat and a really creamy texture. It’s 120 calories, though!
Ice cubes, more or less depending on whether fruit is frozen
If I’m going totally green, I like avocado, cucumber, lemon and apple together with the greens, with a water base.
Another good combination is chocolate, banana, and nut butter (either the real thing or powdered). Don’t forget the greens.
Some days it is more elaborate than others. They can get pretty high calorie, but I’ve never topped 500 calories for one and it packs a ton of nutrition. It keeps me satisfied from one meal to the next, but like anything else it may not work for everyone.
I’ve been trying to use up some stuff I have on hand that I won’t buy again, so some days it is nothing but an Advocare meal replacement shake, a handful of greens, a handful of berries and some ice cubes. Those are made with whey protein, though, so I try to limit them to two or three times a week. I still have about a dozen I need to use up.3 -
For the new people, welcome!
My eating plan is also CICO with an emphasis on protein, veg, fruit and complex carbs. You could call it the Mediterranean diet. (Not too many carbs, healthy oils, fruit and veg) I do have an occasional treat (good ice cream, dark chocolate etc) if it fits into my calories. I generally avoid cakes, cookies, chips and most of my food is made from scratch. I know I drink too much alcohol for optimum health, but it's all logged.
I lost 57 pounds doing it this way over 18 months and then have stayed at, or near, maintenance for five and a half years. BMI 24. I would like to lose a few pounds more since my recent inadvertent video viewing.
As Barbie says, 'The best diet is the one you can stick to'. Whatever works for you. But, and it's a big but, it has to be a lifestyle, not a sprint, if you want to keep the weight off permanently. The sad truth is that 95% of 'diets' fail, in that the weight is regained when the person can no longer bear with the restrictions they have imposed on themselves.
Enjoy your food and your way of eating.
My revelation was the amount I can eat if I increase my CO. I gradually, over the years, increased my CO, until I now regularly do around 800 - 950 calories a day intentional exercise. I eat 1800 a day, more or less, which gives me plenty of wriggle room and lots to enjoy without feeling guilty. I can even have one candy as a last treat. If I go over that I have calories in hand.
I crept up four pounds and I'm slowly losing that again. But I never feel deprived.
I do sometimes feel that the amount of exercise I do is crazy for a woman of nearly 70, but it's definitely worth it. It has changed my life in many ways and given me the confidence to do many things I was scared of before, like publish my books.
I agree with Barbie on another point, 'Strategy is stronger than willpower'. Smart people plan to avoid irresistible temptation.
My challenge for today is to avoid visiting the fridge while DH is at cricket! I also have to find a solution to having my normal dinner time and place disrupted by going to Max's dance exhibition. I think some hard boiled eggs are in the answer.

This brought tears to my eyes. For my entire life I was bullied, teased, made fun of because of my weight. My sister one year older than me , called me "Fat Man" my entire adolescent/teen years. When I got engaged at 21 and the wedding was six months away, one of my sisters said to me "you need to get on a diet now you don't want to be the fattest one in your wedding". I felt I was never good enough. So I ate my way through the pain. Six years ago I weighed 283 pounds. So yes, sometimes it's still hard for me to believe its me in the mirror. But I'm going to enjoy every minute of it. Thank you so much my friend

Morning all! Up at 2:30am! So hot and humid and with Tim laying so close it was too much for me. I could have just moved to another room and probably gotten back to sleep, but Tim woke and needed some help, then he remembered that he left the windows down on our jeep, so I ran out into the hot and humid-ness to close the windows. lol Too much activity, so I am awake. No Trentin today, so I might sneak a nap in later.
Connie in KY- I claim my lawn mowing time on here with my push mower. It is under "mowing lawn, general". Like most of mfp's calorie counts; the calorie count for this is probably high. BUT...I do mow 3/4 of my yard up and down a hill, so maybe the count is more accurate for me. I found this on the Livestrong website, though:
If your lawn mowing job takes a half hour and you use a manual mower, that translates to 114 burned calories for a 125-lb. person, 138 burned calories for a 150-lb. person and 156 calories for a 175-lb. person. Using a power mower for a half-hour translates to 102 burned calories for a 125-lb. person, 123 burned calories for a 150-lb. person and 141 calories for a 175-lb. person.
I have a manual mower (no power). It takes me three hours to mow the front, sides, and back yards. Tim wants me to make Colin do it; but I am loathe to give it up, because other than my daily walks it is my number one calorie burner. I weigh 230lbs. So I am thinking maybe I burn about 400-500 calories/hour (factoring in the extra weight and the fact that I am mowing 3/4 of my lawn up a hill.
Machka- Focus on the day. The meme sounds a bit more dramatic, to me anyway, than the reality of it. This is how I have gotten through most of my days. It may sound sad (I don't mean for it to sound that way), but I just do better if I make my "list for the day" and just focus on getting it done. IF I plan or make long term lists, life just feels too overwhelming.
I am a week away from having my grandson in my arms! It is finally so close! Not having Trentin this weekend is working out well, as I have a list of things that needs to get done before they get here. I wish all stores were open this early, I would have my shopping done before the sun comes up! Anyway, here is Joaquin, having a morning swim with mama earlier this week! I am glad he likes the water! Seeing as how, visits to grandma are going to involve lots of water and sand.
Well, even though I have already finished a cup of coffee, I feel like I could go back to sleep; so off I go to try. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

It describes, very accurately, how things were for me from March 22, 2018 to .... probably sometime in August 2018. The first several months of my husband's injury.
Sometime in August, I could start thinking about tomorrow ... now, I can usually plan a week, maybe two.
My parents would like us to come to Canada for a visit ... I'd love to be able to say, "We'll be there in November, during a break from uni." But I doubt that will work and I have absolutely no idea when we might be able to visit Canada again.
I'm hoping I can finish my degree. I'm getting close, so it would be nice! But I'm not sure if that's going to be possible.
There are so many things I'm just not sure about.
But I've got my long list of things I need to get done or would like to get done, and each day I work at it a little.

Machka and KJ and Heather: I'm still adjusting my time perspective to living in what is meant to be our best and final home. I do fine, and in fact, do better if I have a six-month list of work deadlines... but as far as lists for home... I've moved for the last 42 years of my life! I don't even know how to think a year ahead in terms of home projects. And my husband and I have pretty well decided that outside projects are a no-go for the summer. It's too much to ask him to work out in this heat all week long, then work outside in the heat all weekend. The home renovations can start again in the fall.
SueBDew- Well done on your hubby for the terrific surprise!
Kewtlady - I struggle when my environment is full of snacks, as well, and being able to control that environment really helps--getting my husband to understand that snacks had to be ones I don't like much if at all was the first step. Convenience, unfortunately, is not our friend when it comes to keeping calories under control.
I tried melatonin last night again, first time in a while. It definitely helped me go to sleep. The staying asleep part, I don't know about that--I was able to go back to sleep at 2 a.m. and 3 a.m., but gave up at 4 a.m. And I felt quite fuzzy when I woke... I write the alphabet with my toes before I get out of bed every morning, stretches all the tendons, strengthens my ankles, keeps things fluid... and I kept forgetting which letter came next! That's a little disturbing. Might try it one more night, we'll see how I feel throughout the day.
Another hot and steamy day on the way... won't be able to mow until the sun's up far enough to dry things out, as we had a short cloudburst come through last night that soaked everything down. One of our eventual aims is to have everything in the acre around the house planted out to the point that there is no grass to mow (speaking of long-term goals for home)... but can't see it happening any time soon. So... we mow.
Love y'all,

I was supposed to go to the dentist this morning and then to meditation this afternoon. I called a colleague to ask for a little info, and he said he was going to "stop". in talking I understood, in no uncertain terms, he's talking about suicide. we are not close but sometimes confide in and other in certain professional things. he is planning, he says, to sell his furniture and give the money to his son. he's an adjunct teacher and is unable to make ends meet. he was waiting to see if he got a full time job this coming year. he didn't. he says he doesn't have it in him to not make enough to live on another year. I tried to encourage him to find other solutions. I had to call the dentist to cancel, since I was running very very late, and found the dentist thought he had already cancelled on his side, for technical reasons. I called back the friend but got no answer. I'll try again later. I don't want to be invasive.
his furniture is in the country.
I called another colleague(who doesn't know him and without revealing who he is) to ask her thoughts. her uncle had committed suicide the previous year. she thought that encouraging him to get accompanying would be the thing to do, to see a psychiatrist (covered by health care here) or, if he finally is determined to be accompanied in his choice and tell those who are close to him. (he has an adult son). in Switzerland assisted suicide is now legal.
there are a lot of job things going around this time of year/ many people disappointed since they didn't get the very competitive jobs, nor get a promotion, after long years. sometimes it's based on inside antagonism. some people make sure that other people don't have an opportunity, so they can help other friends or as a way to get back at someone else.
it was most striking amongst very senior people in one school. one very senior guy is not very nice, and so eventually other senior people didn't vote for him and he was not on the board, despite his fame, so he got back at them by making sure they couldn't get promoted.
I'm far from that level, but things like that can happen on any level.
I find the world is becoming a tough place economically. when I was a teen, a young labourer could expect to be able to buy a house within a few years. now that seems impossible for many. to make ends meet, pay for food, shelter, transport, and basic necessities to live and work is no longer within reach for many.
