Shottzz99: Thanks for your good wishes. My doctor said that I am doing pretty well. My sinus infection was not surprise and she said that over the counter meds are as good as anything she can prescribe at this point. If I develop pneumonia or anything like it, she wants to see me again. :flowerforyou:
Sue in WA: We have a drizzly day today, too. I’m so tired from my travels that I’m happy to sit around in our house with DH, and catch up with this group. Little blessings are wonderful.
I loved my trip to be with DD and the grandkids. Their new home is in a tiny town in the Illinois countryside far from Chicago and other major cities. I’m sure she bought it from the estate of old-time hippies with a back to the land vision. The fireplace is grand. I saw no evidence of a furnace, so they may be cuddling around the fireplace in cold spells. I miss them so much. I am not a fan of the cold (respitraory infection) that I caught and I’m happy to be home.

Pip - hugs to you
Katla - I hope you feel better soon
I am cuddled up in a blanket on this cool evening, flipping channels between The Voice and our election. I’ve found I have more interest in the last few years than I did when I was younger.
I had an early morning this morning I woke up at 520 and could not get back to sleep, I ended up at work at 630 so I had a very productive day.
Hope everyone had a grand day.

Marianne – you reminded me of the cards. I usually do mine the day after Thanksgiving but this year we’ll be out by Jess. So I should probably get them done before Thanksgiving. I also make the pierogi shortly after Thanksgiving and freeze them.
Vicki – feel better fast

Katla sinus infections can be so darned painful and stubborn. Can you stand in a hot shower for 10 minutes every hour? Sometimes that can help break through. Eucalyptus oil helps me too. Was hoping your MD could fix you up quickly but “If I develop pneumonia or anything like it, she wants to see me again. “ SMH :noway: “No evidence of a furnace” in Illinois in winter? They'll have to do more than cuddle I'm thinkin'.
Vicki hope you can take time to let your back heal. Your work schedule always sounds so daunting.
Lenora good to hear from you.
SueKuehn financing new roof very depressing, I hear you. We thought we could refinance our house to cover it, but the lender wouldn't loan a mortgage big enough. We ended up refinancing to lower monthly mortgage payment then took out a “personal” loan at too high an interest for 5 years to cover the rest. Increased our total monthly outgo by $125 for 5 years but then our mortgage payment will be almost $400 less than it was before the new roof. Hope things work out better for you.
Heather sure hope DH's daughter uses this reprieve to save save save! And polish up the resume and network
Was so eager to have fun with the burn barrel today, that I forgot to drop off the recycling on the way home from BB&B. Joe got the fire started right up thanks to a firelog and a little squirt of lighter fluid. The branches and brush I lopped were easy to feed into the barrel. It consumed at about the same pace as I loaded. Joe continued to limb up, then shortened the big branches to manageable size. We'll save some for for firewood. It was fun working together and we got all of the old piles done... but... Joe kept trimming more branches, cutting more brush and adding to the new pile. Had to remind myself that we didn't have to burn it all today, to keep from getting overwhelmed/discouraged. Thankful he's now open to limbing up the trees and cutting down the salal, he was so resistant the first two years, wanted to keep everything “natural”. But Sheesh, Joe, give it and me a rest! Funny how when they're “helping” it makes more work for us...

Barbara - We have a modular home and that is causing part of the problem. We are trying to refinance and get enough for a steel roof. The home is only 12 years old and shingles are good but it was improperly installed. Nails are popping out leaving holes which then leak. Underlayment is not good either. We shall see, but may install cheaper roof and use personal loan if refinance does not work out.
Katla - Hope you recover quickly from the crud you brought home from your visit. When does next contingent arrive?
Pip - Hope Floyd I'd doing okay.
Everyone take care Sue in WA2 -
Good morning, all. Just taking 5 minutes with my morning cuppa to touch base. I have another full day today with Craft at 10.30am, Antiques/Collectibles at 2 pm, and Crochet Group after dinner. Today is dull and overcast, so exercise will be indoors. Just about to do my Physio and then jump in the shower.
Pip: I hope you have had a diagnosis for Floyd, and that he is doing okay (((hugs)))
Miele Failte to any new girls. You will find a wealth of support and advice here. We're an eclectic crowd of prolific posters, but no one expects people to comment on every post. Just jump in when the spirit moves ya!!! 😂

terri love that quote—will hang onto that today, thanks for posting it.
Well we did it, finally bought the new treadmill and it will be delivered this Saturday! Got a bow flex T6- seemed quiet and in our price range including delivery and assembly. DH goes in for knee surgery Friday and will probably be getting in his steps ASAP on it; he is one lousy patient!!
Packed my oatmeal for breakfast, apple snack and red lentil soup for lunch then after work will meet a potential new accountant. This October truly flew by.

Hello everyone.
Barbara - Are you close to a Trader Joes? They may carry chocolate hummus.
Michelle - I usually am up and down a pound or so during maintenance. When I am losing weight it does fluctuate slightly during the week and I do find I have weeks where I weigh the same.
Rori - Sorry to hear about your brother. I had done the rounds with my dear boyfriend who hid it so well that he was already moved in when I found out he had an issue. I was in full support mode the first round (he was hospitalized) and during the second round (hospitalized again) I found out he was faking going to work and drinking during his "work" hours. I moved him in to the guest room and again supported as best as I could. The third time (he disappeared all night) he came home to find almost all of his things packed and ready to go. It was one of the hardest decisions I had to make. It was made out of love which he could not understand. Greg passed away 6 months later. I express this because I finally realized there is a fine line between being supportive and being an enabler. We are all on our own paths and it is up to us to decide which path we are going to take. Are there any Al-Anon meetings you can attend? Addiction not only effects the person it trickles in to everyone's lives around that person. Being around people in similar situations made me realize I was not insane and no matter what I did to help unless Greg was helping himself there was nothing in the world that would change his behavior until he was ready and willing to make the change for himself. If you need help I am here - just private message/friend me and I will be an open ear.
Pip - Sending healing thoughts and prayers for Floyd.
Hugs to all.
SuziQ - Florida - Where is was 92 yesterday!!!!!!! What happened to fall?!3 -
Morning, afternoon and evening all,
Pip - hope the diagnosis for Floyd is positive. It's been a tough enough year for you all.
To all with colds, sinus infections, etc., hope you feel better soon!
On the subject of roofs - Got a guy coming out tomorrow evening to give us a quote on ours--don't plan to get it done immediately, but want to know what we're in for financially. We had to get the flashing around the chimney re-done for the insurance folks a year ago, and when they dug in to get that done, we found out there are already three roof layers (the first one was bright blue shingles!). It means we must have the roof stripped and redone completely, which is about $1,000 more than just a simple re-roof. We also want to go with a metal roof, which is nearly twice the cost of asphalt shingles (of course), and I want the copper-colored roof, which is, of course,15% more than the more normal colors. Champagne taste, beer budget as usual. But... a metal roof would mean that we would never have to replace it in our lifetimes, most likely, as many have a 50-year warranty--asphalt shingles must be replaced every 12-17 years, which would mean three more times before we croak over, if things work as they ought. So... decisions, decisions.
Anyway - woke up to a 60-degree house, as I'd dropped the heat way, way down yesterday, it being a beautiful day. Just heard my husband turn the heat down, so I'll be turning that back up once he leaves for work. Must get it together and go do my resistance work at the gym, and then got four small grants to get accomplished by Nov. 1, which is getting closer by the minute! Finally got a grant calendar made up that gives me a visual of what I'm doing when, where the overlaps are, and where I can fit in research time, etc. It's helping a lot, to be able to visualize my upcoming year. I do love Excel, which probably makes me exceedingly odd.
Later, y'all,

Not odd at all ... it's my favourite of the Office package.
Excel
Powerpoint
Outlook
Access ... this would rate higher if I needed it more now. I've used it extensively, but haven't needed it in several years.
Word ... although I've been starting to come to terms with Word in the last few years.

Machka - always reassuring to have a fellow (and far exceeding my own knowledge) technophile around. I often feel I was born at exactly the right time. Old enough to have lived in a world that could barely conceive of the Internet, so that I have an appreciation for exactly what the Internet has accomplished for my Elephant's Child curiosity bump, and young enough to have been part of its earlier iterations. I was designing websites in 1998 for a health insurance company that was working with Texas A&M university.
I still think it's marvelous, while being completely aware of what sharp edges that dual-edged sword actually has...
OK, the car has warmed enough to actually get in it. Our thermometer says 38 degrees. I'm just enough of a sybarite to love heated seats. The benefits to buying a used car with all the bells and whistles still working!

I wish I had embraced it earlier. I learned to program in high school Basic on Apple computers ... it was how we got anything done on a computer. Pre-wordprocessors etc. And I loved it! But when word processors etc. appeared, for some reason I shied away from computers for a number of years. I still used them a little bit, but not nearly to the extent I should have done. It wasn't till the mid-1990s that my interest was renewed.
It is often a bit of a love-hate relationship.

Lisa the thermostat wars have begun in my home as well, just in reverse, I will always turn it lower. DH actually has the Nest thermostat that he can control on his phone and will often "heat up" the house on his way home from work cause he knows I keep it lower I always know he is on his way home when I start feeling hot!!
NYKAREN4 -
On Thermostats - We have propane for heat (and cooktop and clothes dryer) and I am very stingy with the propane, it is expensive! I have a heated blanket at my recliner during the winter months and a space heater by my desk for when I am working. Hubs like it much cooler than me, so he is happy.
Okie in the TX Hill Country2 -
I'm in charge of the thermostat, though I do always ask DH if he is comfortable, or not.
I am in charge of the TV remote. I decide who watches what TV in which room. I control what music we have in the house. I book the holidays. I make reservations for restaurants etc. I always consult him, so they are joint decisions, but I need to be in control.
I'm so very happy that my DH understands that need. He knows that, as an abused child, my need to be a control freak is central. He is man enough to love me enough to let me do it. If he feels I am taking over and not consulting him, he very soon let's me know it.
With my previous husband I felt he allowed me to ride roughshod over him and I didn't respect him for it. I took it too far. With DH I do very much respect him and know his limits.
