WOMEN AGES 50 + FOR DECEMBER 2019

Resolutions – I generally do not make New Year’s resolutions. I make goals throughout the year. Someone mentioned a 20 for 20 list which I thought was a great idea. I am still working on my list and seeing it is December 28th must certainly get that wrapped up. Viv, I do find making a goal and breaking it down in to smaller pieces helps me get it completed. I just read a quick article that also states not to make goals “general”. So instead of writing down I will get rid of the clutter around my home make the goal more specific by writing I will go through the kitchen junk drawer and get rid of all of the things I have not used in the past 6 months.
SuziQ - SFL
I'm with you ... goals rather than resolutions.
And regarding being specific, just the other evening I wrote down all the things I wanted to do with my cycling club along with who to contact for more advice and the date by which certain things might be "due".
Prior to doing that, I just had a "Cycling Club" entry on my calendar which I kind of dabble aimlessly at with no feeling like I'd actually accomplished anything. Immediately after become a whole lot more specific, I finished one thing and got a enough done on a second that national president requested that topic of discussion appear on the next agenda!!
What a difference actually writing down what I needed to do made!

Did a 40Minute Full Body Workout DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do a 10MS Carb Burner.
Terrible as this may be…Jess and Colby said last night that they’re going to go to Asheville today and they don’t expect to be home for dinner. That means that I can eat fairly decently today. Isn’t that terrible to feel that way?
M – would the URL be flickr.com/cameraroll? The reason I’m not sending the dd to Maria is because it’s in a frame with glass, and we all know how careful the post office is.
As far as weight, the scale says that I’ve put on weight but my clothes still fit fairly decently. Go figure!
Karen VA – yes, my pot has a yogurt function. But what I read on the internet was that if I scalded the milk in the IP, it usually takes about 20-30 minutes. Now I know it didn’t take that long on the stovetop (at least I don’t think it did). Next time, I’ll try it in the IP and see if that takes a long time to bring it up to temp then to cool it down. I just remembered when I made yogurt in Denise’s IP I scalded the milk on the stovetop (that’s what the directions in the cookbook said to do)
Viv UK – remember that chocolate can be frozen! Good luck to your sister
Terri – Maria told me (this is the second time) that she’d come here for Christmas and I think it was her who convinced Denise that she shouldn’t. I was hoping that she’d help Denise with her anxiety. I’m just wondering if it would help any to make her feel bad about not coming. Of course, I bet she won’t feel bad. The other thing is that I’d have that dd and am not sure what I’d do with it if I didn’t give it to her. Maybe I should just give it to her out of niceness – to say that I made this for her.
I usually don’t make resolutions, either. For me, they usually get broken.
Poor Olivia!!!

Karen - Poor little Olivia! Pneumonia's so scary in the little ones... I've had it twice now, and it's no fun for big'uns, either...3
-
On the train, and I was asleep for about 4 hr and 45 mintues, caught a quick cat nap around 4:45 and we left and watched the sunrise down in old saybrook.. have had breakfast or early lunch and now maybe another nap..3

Michele-no,it’s not bad to feel that way.I Wish my hubby would be on board with healthier eating,I eat what I prepare for meals, just not nearly as much as he does.Plus,he Loves sweets at bedtime. When he was in a hunt club they would be late some nights and I was kinda glad. Then I could have a small salad or something really healthy.
Karen-prayers going out for Olivia. My gs had pneumonia 2years ago and for a while after he got over it he would catch almost everything that came around. But he hasn’t be sick since they’ve been here.Prayers, hugs, love ❤️,and gratitude for y’all.

Oh little Olivia! ... praying she gets well soon!
Funeral today for my dear friend's father. He had a larger than life presence. There's a Cherokee Proverb that I think is appropriate for the way he lived ... but is a good reminder for all of us.
"When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice."

I don't make New Year's Resolutions but I frequently decide to make a change in my life. My 20 for 2020 list includes five items that are clutter cleaning, two that are paperwork related, and two that are knitting related.
Jake and I sleep in separate rooms because we are both restless in different ways and at different times of the night.
The best book I've read about habit change is "Better Than Before" by Gretchen Rubin. New Year's Resolutions are really new habits and new habits are not easy to acquire.
Michele, I think you might get a lot more peace if you accepted the fact that your daughter and her MIL have a relationship that you can't understand or change no matter what you do.
Line dance class was small but lots of fun yesterday. Today i my day of rest.

Hubs and I have been sleeping in separate bedrooms for many years. It works for us. Our sleep styles are so different. He likes a twin bed and takes the master bedroom. He gets up at nite to use bathroom and needs the space in the master closet for his work clothes. I take one of the other bedrooms and prefer a full size bed. I love having a space that is my own at the end of the day. At hotels we always get 2 beds. Sleeping together at relatives homes is torture and we cannot wait to get home and have restful sleep in our own beds!

done today: gym, buy computer, helmet, meditate 10 min.
not yet: buy toothpaste, work on legal file and filing, clean 15 min. I'm in bed. and it's 4pm.
I feel so tired. I've been doing 15-20 min every second day or so on the stationary bike at gym at 139 HR (hight target rate for me). it feels good at first and then I am ready to sleep.. though I did -again-wake up at around 3 am.
I called a hometown friend across the ocean today and found out he and his now-misses are eloping today. they have been engaged for about a year and were unsure of how to get married (she wanted big, he wanted little). She's going for major operation in 2 days, so they decided to get married just before. I was happy to hear it. Funny that I called them today. We haven't spoken for 2 months. They are getting married just about 5 or 6 family members present. I'm glad for them.6 -
(((Olivia)))
Allie ~ Enjoy your trip.
Michele ~ We eat dinner around 6 PM every night.
Amber ~ Enjoy your daughter's visit.
I too put on about 3 lbs over the last three weeks. Need to get back on a regular more normal eating pattern for me. Crackers after dinner are my downfall (along with my wine drinking).
Just cleaned the carpet in the office/bedroom for the first time in almost 2 yrs. Boy, did it need it. It had been so long, it took me a while to figure out how to work the Hoover rug cleaner.

One thing I have to remember in 2020 is to start my Apple Watch when I'm doing work around the house etc. The thing I'm trying to figure out with my Apple Watch is why I don't get credit for all the calories burned during my workout? The only calories which seem to show up in diary are the "active" calories. For example, yesterday I burned 609 "total" calories on the elliptical but only 463 of those calories counted as "active" and showed up in my diary2

Heather: You are the best grandma that I know. Your grandchildren are so lucky to have you in their lives!!!
Rebecca: Your photo of the Spark in Astoria is charming and makes me want to visit Astoria--when the weather is better. You’re ahead of me in putting Christmas decorations away. I like to do that on New Year’s Day after the Grand Floral Parade
Karen in VA: Good of you to sing Happy Retirement Day to your ex.
Rebecca: I’m sorry that your younger son is not communicating. Can you contact his command to find out whether he’s okay?
Allie: Enjoy your adventure to NYC. My visit there was with a group of eigth-grade students on a school adventure. Our kids were great and everyone we encountered in NYC was kind & helpful. I came home from that trip with great memories. We also visited Washington DC and Monticello on that trip.
Michelle: We send our kids presents and don’t expect to get any other than photos of them and their children. We have more than enough “stuff.” My idea of best Christmas gifts to receive from them are phone calls in addition to the photos. :flowerforyou: My daughter is very close to her MIL who lives closer than me by a couple of thousand miles and is ready to help as needed. I am grateful for the help she gives my daughter and the kids.
Heather: I’m up a bit, too. I’ve taken steps to improve and am part way back to goal, but there is still serious work to be done to get there. I quit alcohol altogether. I feel better and the weight is dropping s-l-o-w-l-y. :ohwell:
Viv: I started my “New Year’s Resolution” shortly after Halloween. No alcohol. The extra pounds are slowly easing away and I feel more alert and better all around. My bad knee isn’t quite as grumpy. It will be happier when I’ve dropped a few more pounds. :ohwell:
SuziQ: I love my yoga classes. The teachers do an excellent job. One teacher holds morning classes MWF and the other teaches an evening class. Most of our morning class members are 50+ and retired. There is a mix of men and women. The evening students are taking yoga after work. :flowerforyou: DH is now taking chair yoga. He loves it and gets more good from his chair yoga classes than he did from physical therapy.
Karen: Sending good wishes for a speedy recovery for Olivia.
Beth near Buffalo: I love the Cherokee Proverb, "When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice."
I need to call the vet’s office asap. I thought I had enough pain meds to last my dog until Monday but that isn’t the case. He is out. I hope they’ll fill the prescription today or he will be in pain.

Karen in VA Olivia, pneumonia, oh no! Poor sweet baby!
Lisa twice? Had it once and that was more than enough for me. Good came from it, though, I’ve been smoke free for 20+ yrs.
Starting to feel a little better, but still not up to snuff. Time to shower and dress for my first away-from-home excursion since Monday, Joe’s taking the dogs and me to the beach.
Lighter, lovelies!

Allie - Enjoy! I had my 65th birthday in NYC and it was fabulous!
Karen - Oh no! Sending get well vibes to Olivia.
I am feeling so much better. My morning exercises put me in a better mood and I've had a short nap on the sofa. I then decided to go out to the local supermarket and enjoyed my chat with the serving guy about crisp versus soft biscuits. I have made a great British traditional meal for tonight - curried left over turkey. Yummo! There's spinach and peas in there as well. I did it in my IP.
Tonight there is a Norwegian/American thriller series starting on the BBC. I will be able to see if I can understand any Norwegian! I have been studying it now for quite a while on Duolingo. I am currently on a 38 day streak. We are going to Norway in April on our cruise.
Michele - I scald mine in the IP on the BOIL setting on yoghurt. For me the not having to watch it is worth the extra minutes. However, I understand that if you are using Fairlife milk you do not have to boil it at all, just use the 8.30 setting from cold. I up mine to 10.30 as I like it fairly tart. There is masses of info on line, forums, communities, websites, videos on YouTube. I learnt a lot when I first started from a Facebook group. It is definitely a learning curve, but worth it. There is also an app.

Allie: Enjoy NYC! I am wallowing in memories of living there and walking around during the holidays feeling like I was in a movie. The 911 Museum, IMHO is a must see.
KarenVA: Healing energies to Olivia
Michele: I make yougurt with whole Fairlife a couple times per month. No preheating or scalding necessary with Fairlife. Just dump in IP with a couple heaping tablespoons of plain yougurt. I set mine for 9 hours. The amount of whey varies, and I don't yet have any understanding for why. Either way, I use the turkey baster to suck out alot of the whey and then put the rest of the yougurt in a large mesh strainer for about 90 minutes. This yields about 42 oz of firm Greek yougurt and the whey goes into my blender to fortify next smoothie. As for Maria, I would take the high road. Maybe send her a personal holiday card and express desire to take her out for a nice lunch in place of a traditional gift this year.
DH was up until 2:30 repeatedly wiping down the kitchen sink and counters. They were so dry, and clean they actually squeaked. Of course, I was also wide awake trying to be very serene and praying he'd wind down and come to bed. It was rough night for me. He no sooner got under the covers, when the cat got up and asked for his window to be opened. Grrrrr. Fortunately, the upstairs neighbors were quiet, so we all got to sleep in till 9AM, instead of our usual 7:00.
Snowing here, and it's fine by me. Only task for the day is to make Skinnytaste zucchini soup. I've been thinking hard about my word for 2020, and also just finished listening to "Atomic Habits", which is helping me reframe my thinking about how to approach what changes to make.
Count me as another with a higher number on the scale. We got this friends. Stay well.

I called in the dog’s pain med refill and the Vet's receptionist said I could get them for less $$$ at Costco. I followed up and Costco doesn’t seem to sell them at all, but Walmart does. There is a Walmart store in our town and it would be more convenient and less expensive to buy them there. I’ll pick up his pain meds from the vet later today and get a RX to take to Walmart.

I have yet to get a satisfactory answer on that. I use mine 7 days a week. count your total, not active.0 -
Katla, we had so much fun taking that picture with the pretty old home behind it. I was laughing with husband, " but why-y-y can't I go up to their door and state our car matches your house. I think we need to live here"!
I have had a lot of stress with the idea of putting in an official health and welfare check on him, which is the next step. The ombudsmen would put it in, and he would be officially talked to. Lee stated its embarrassing for both the command that has to do this piddly task, and the sailor that has to sit and endure it. But at this point, how worse could it be? Maybe him calling us finally, being mad at us, he would understand that what he was feeling emotionally is kinda what I feel every day. I will contact the ombudsmen after the first of the year, if we don't hear from him then.👍
Today the 10 lb turkey is bathing delightfully in the sink, until I pay him dry, massage oil into his pale body and throw him in the sauna....erm I mean OVEN later today! Having leftover potatoes and carrots from our roast meal last Wednesday, and dressing. Making some turkey gravy and having cranberry jelly though. I shall have 2 oz of turkey, 2 slices of jelly, and some veggies. I shall pass on the potatoes and dressing! I shall persevere!
Last night we ate dinner early at 4:30 pm. Lee picked out a frozen pizza. So we each had half. I put on diced tomatoes and sliced up some black olives. It was so good! I haven't eaten a big meal like that for some time and I paid the price in the middle of last night. We then went to the theater on base and watched "Knives Out" a detective movie, funny, quite good! It is only $5 per person, so that's nice. Before the movie started they played our National Anthem. It had been awhile since I had done that. In Japan was the last time. We are never on base when "Colors" is played. Cars stop, if you are walking you stop and face a flag. It is morning, and afternoon. I used to be so annoyed with some of the Filipino wives in Japan because they would never stop in the commissary parking lot. I would look, point to the flag, with my hand saying STOP. Geez!
So in the middle of the night I felt the need, the pressure to birth my pizza baby. But like false contractions I just laid in bed, rocking and breathing. My belly was so tight and full! UUgh! It finally subsided.
I weighed this morning and I am up 1.4 lbs. DAmn, that pizza baby!
Our band of faithful followers, we seem to all be struggling this time of year. So what do we do? We miser-ate together until the season passes? It is a tough thing! I need to stick with my plan man!

Well it has been a blast so far. We did a bit of walking it will be a 14,000-15'000 step day. We went to the memorial reflecting pools didnt go to the museum .. that takes a good 4 + hrs to go through.
Went through Chinatown ,Little Italy . Our room looks over the Brooklyn bridge . And we are across the hall from concierge lounge and happy hour is 5-7 so we will be imbibing there..3 -
IP yogurt makers. Why are you pouring off the whey? That's where a ton of protein lives. I always stir the whey back into dairy products when it rises to the top. Just curious.0

barbie - I guess I just wish that Maria thought of someone else and want to help her son to accept another family who does things differently than she does.
katla - when you speak to your children, do you also get to talk to their partners (wife/husband)?
SuziQ - I poured off the whey to make Green yogurt

Most programs do not sync very well, i.e. elliptical reading versus watch. Sometimes your wrist isn't moving when using machines because you're holding on to rails or watch isn't quite touching your skin. I would research online to see if it's something in the settings. Good luck!1 -

But doesn't that mean that you should be accepting that they do things differently than you do instead of trying to force them to do what you want them to do? I see where you are coming from, you want your daughter to want to come to your house and spend time with you. It appears that that isn't going to happen right now so you have to decide whether to go to her to try to maintain a relationship or to let it go and not spend time with them. Only you know what you can live with and how much effort you are willing to put into keeping the door open. I hope you can find a happy medium and find peace. It seems like a really sad situation.
