Another thing for new people to running...
This is Jan so is a good month for these tips.
Today it was cold. It was windy. I was tired. I have Raynaud's. The gym was busy because it is Jan. I had a structured work out to do instead of my normal run and not care. My current audiobook would run out less than 1/2 way into it. Did I mention it was cold and windy? Cause it was. Also, I was tired. I really was not feeling it.
I ran over 2000 miles last year and typically run at least 1 marathon and 2 ultras a year plus other random thingies and I STILL have days where I am like "running sucks, gonna go eat ice cream instead."
Well, I ran, and it was fine. You saw that post earlier. The point I want to share is that WE ALL HAVE THOSE DAYS. Do not beat yourself up over them. If you can, run anyways, if not let it go and try again the next day. I promise people do not normally get arrested for missing a run.
Also ice cream is good but you probably know that already.14 -
My goals for 2020 are to stay injury free and healthy. I am also possibly going to try again for my first half marathon.
January goal is to run 50 miles.
2/2 - Scheduled for 2 miles today but GPS said 2.47 miles.
2/4 - First 4 miler in over 2 years. Only 5 hours of sleep last night due to a late hockey game and an early game today. Wasn't a pretty one but got it done.
2/6 - Got in 3 miles on the treadmill at work this morning. Coming down with a cold so it was a struggle. Left work early and slept for 4 hours. We will see how I feel tomorrow, I am scheduled for another 3 miles.
Monthly total - 9.47 miles
@Elise4270 - anytime!
Races:
March 14:
St. Malachi 2 mile and 5 mile
May 16:
Cleveland Marathon Half and 5k
June 13 - 14:
Run and Ride Cedar Point 5k and Quarter Marathon
September 20:
Cleveland Hero's Run 5 miler
December 5:
Santa Hustle Cedar Point 5k7 -
More new people - welcome!
Injury update - run tonight was 3/2 minute walk run intervals - 6 times. My cardiovascular endurance was fine. As expected the hamstring is still a big tight but no pain. I did have a weird sensation during the running segments. It wasn’t pain, but the muscle seemed “wobbly” while running. Extra jiggly and a bit tender. I’m not sure what to make of it. Atrophy maybe? Tomorrow is a rest day, so I’ll review how I feel as far as muscle soreness before deciding how to proceed.8 -

@ PastorVincent @ --- the chip hasn't been updated since 2012, but unfortunately, the owner wants him back. My daughter is heartbroken.
Aww that’s too bad. But you can show the owner how happy his pup made her! And she helped a scared lonely pup. Maybe you two can pick her a new friend. She looks so happy. Tell her she did good taking good care of him. I hope if mine ever get lost someone like her find them. I’d let her keep them tho! Haha! Nah they are good dumb dogs.
You’re not going to believe this.
I called the owner after work and made a plan to meet up and I apologized in advance for the emotional ambush my kids would surely bring right to her.
She said, “ACTUALLY, I’m moving and already have three dogs and two cats and have to rehome them all.”
So she came over and met my kids and me and our dog and SHE LEFT THE BIG LOVE BEAST HERE FOR US!
CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?
He has no health problems and is up to date on everything so I have a little head start AND a new running partner!19 -
Ahhhh look what arrived in the post today!
FYI it took 1 month to get from the states to me. Love the holidays 🙄
Now to wait till its dark enough to run in it. Say about 3 months...12 -

Yes. I want the recipe as long as it doesn't have soy or nuts (allergy). I like veggies. Just to lazy to plan veggie meals.
"Mexican" Rice
2.50 cup Water
1.00 grams, Onion (sometimes I just add onion powder instead of chopped onion. Ok, most times)
1 tsp cumin
2 tsp chili powder
0.50 tsp paprika
1 tsp garlic powder
1 can Organic Low Sodium Black Beans
2 tsp Better than Bullion (Veggie)
1 can No Salt Tomato Sauce (I have also used petite diced tomatoes as well)
1 can Canned Corn, drained
1.50 cup White Rice (have used brown as well)
Throw all in a rice cooker & go. This usually gives me 4 servings. If I need more protein, I'll add a Field Roast sausage (apple sage is sooo good!) when I eat. I was planning on being ambitious tonight & making this, but...my energy has rapidly depleted. Peanut butter sandwich it was for me.5 -
I've just heard that the woman I knew at the gym who collapsed last week has died. Despite how bad it looked, I'm still shocked by this news. From what I knew, she was a genuinely nice person who had been really dedicated to improving her health and strength - apparently in the face of a lot of challenges. She was only 38 years old. The gym is going to be a sad place this week. It's hard to process.21
-
@katharmonic I’m so sorry to hear this news. My deepest condolences. I will be praying for her family and friends for comfort while you all grieve.0

Jan 1 2.5 kms (treadmill)
Jan 2 2.5 kms (treadmill)
Jan 4 2.5 kms (jogged fully instead of walking in between, so yay. And not treadmill)
Jan 5 2.7 kms on the treadmill.
Jan 6 3 kms on the treadmill.
Jan 7 3 kms (treadmill)6 -

OMG im so sorry! She was so young. That's so tragic.
Hugs to you and your gym friends.2 -
@katharmonic I’m so sorry to hear that. Wishing comfort and peace for those who knew her.0

@Camaramandy648 Isn’t it great when you do the right thing and everything works out for the best? Love the happy doggy photos!2
-
Oh No! @katharmonic, I am so sorry! 38 is much too young. I guess it is a reminder to all of us to live each day to the fullest and be as healthy as possible!
I got in a decent run today when I thought it would be awful. Well, the wind wasn't great but it didn't completely deter me. I did wait a while for it to die down even just a bit but it is a clue to how bad it is when no birds are flying and all are riding out the waves and whitecaps on the lake. There was no one on the trail and it was hot. It didn't feel like I was being pushed from behind when the wind was behind me but I certainly felt it when I was running face into it. Did a lot of sprints at agility class with Hobbes the Vizsla tonight and since we haven't had class since before the holidays we are both now exhausted. Strength day for me tomorrow... Hobbes gets a rest day 😊

I've been away for a few days and just glancing at stuff quickly, so welcome to the newbies and hugs to everyone needing one (and it seems that's lots of us!).
@katharmonic so sorry about the woman at your gym, I hope you're ok and as @shanaber says, these things really do remind us to make the most of the time we have here.
My knee/leg is better than it was but is still niggly towards the end of runs. I haven't exactly been resting it though, apart from my usual (if slightly shorter in keeping with revised plan) runs we got a couple of hikes in with my mother while we were staying with her, including one that involved an unexpected guided tour of a weird man's property with his rather hostile dog glued to our legs, ending in a climb out over a wall via a home-made, rickety ladder, passing through 3 separate herds of not-very-friendly-looking cattle and finding ourselves the wrong side of a tall, padlocked gate. We had to borrow large chunks of firewood from a loaded truck that was parked up the lane to make a staircase for my mother to climb up to get over the gate, then I almost got stuck impaled on the top (damn you, short legs lol).
Anyway, my panic over my sore knee led me to revise and reduce my goals to avoid hurting myself. I have ditched the plans for trail races for this year, those will be my spring 2021 target races. I will run the March 22nd HM and will probably sign up for a few short races as well, but nothing more than 10k.
With that in mind I've dialed back my mileage and restarted my HM training plan, which means my new January running goal is just 115km.

10k today on trails at WC Johnson - started in daylight and finished in almost pitch darkness. Kind of fun running trails in the dark, I’m amazed I didn’t trip and kill myself! We passed a deer in the dark, of whom all I could see was her flippy white tail, and heard owls calling. I feel like I’m getting better at running balanced the way you have to run on slick muddy trails. Also my hip abductor feels better.
Anyone remember the bridge that was under water or maybe washed away? Today it’s back. Turns out it was just completely submerged.

Good morning all - first run of 2020 yesterday, 3.1 miles total and ran the whole first mile without walking 24 days to get to 1.5 miles non stop, can't wait to get back to normal!11
-
So sorry to hear your news @katharmonic and it reminds me that we have survived all the $h1t days life has thrown at us so far so we are doing okay.
Managed the first 7 days of RED January with a shorter run this morning. It wasn't intended to be short however my waterproof jacket can interact with my watch and ended my run prematurely. Try again tonight as I want a distance that logs against my training plan.

@katharmonic I echo all of the other condolences here. I'm sure it's especially shocking to you as you had just spoken to her. I'm pretty close to the same age, and am not expecting to leave this earth anytime soon, but we just never know which random conversation will be our last. I hope you're doing ok, and that you have someone you can talk to (face to face).
And then the joyous news... happy for you and your family! @Camaramandy6481 -

I realize the 12 DAYS of Christmas are over, but the 12 RUNS of Christmas continue...
The Twelve Runs of Christmas
On the tenth run of Christmas, my workout gave to me:
Ten dry heaves wrackin';
Nine walkers walking;
Eight hip tweaks twangin';
Seven sparrows chirping;
Six frozen fingers;
Five trillion snowflakes;
Four wind gusts;
Three calf cramps;
Two frozen ponds;
And a small niggle in my left knee.
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs
Run at least 4 5k races
Get a 5k PR
Average at least 138k per month, to meet my Run the Year pledge of 1,020 miles
Run the Year Team: Pavement Pounders5 -
@katharmonic unexpected death has a tendency to put things in to perspective. i've really learned to embrace the how important is it? philosophy
@Camaramandy648 Congratulations.0 -
@Camaramandy648 That's great news for you and your kids! I feel for the owner too. I don't think I could move and leave my dog behind.
@Avidkeo and @PastorVincent Yeah for the new running gear!
@katharmonic So sorry to hear about the lady at the gym. Hugs and prayers and condolences to you and her friends and family.
@Tramboman Hope you are feeling better!1 -
so i had my first returned foster dog. they decided that the 4 of them didn't have time for him. even though they already have a dog. and i have 2 jobs and 3 other dogs. so i had to wait for them to drop him off. so again, later run. tired legs. speed demon really wanted to go fast. i didn't have it in me. definitely appreciating the above freezing temps.6
-
@PastorVincent those are AWESOME!
@katharmonic Jeez, that is awful. I am so sorry. Sudden losses like that always shake me to my core. I hope that you are able to find peace in the midst of the sadness.
@Avidkeo that vest looks awesome! You'll have to let me know if it's amazing - I need to get one.
@Tramboman you are doing so well! I am so proud of you!
And thanks to all of you who congratulated me on our newest addition. I cannot tell you enough what an amazing boy he is. I am in love. My heart is so full.

@katharmonic I am so sorry to hear about your friend from the gym. There are just no words.
@Camaramandy648 I'm glad that everything worked out for all parties with the dog. And nice shoes!
@Avidkeo I got one of those vest in November and I LOVE it!
I did not run this morning. but I am planning to run at lunch. My cold seems much better, but I am still coughing a little. So I decided that rather than run in the dark at 29°F I would wait until lunchtime. It is supposed to be 60°F then though, so it may be warmer than I want it to be, but I do a little better in the warm than the cold. Plus I figured it would be better not to be breathing in the cold air and probably better to run a shorter run. I will only have time for around 3 miles or so at lunch and if I had run this morning I would have probably been tempted to run further. I hate being sick and especially at the beginning of the month. I feel like I am behind on my goals, but in reality I am not. I'm hoping that taking care of myself when I'm sick will be better in the long run, but I am impatient about taking time off. I know it is irrational the think that missing one run will completely derail my progress. I just hope the run today at lunch is a little easier than the run on Sunday was.11 -
Went to the gym before work this morning as always, but I was feeling a bit more tired than normal. Fitbit said I didn't sleep as well, so that's probably why. Anyway, decided to just walk for 45 minutes on an incline instead of jog, so no new mileage today.6
