@trucker743
Sharon, I live south of Dayton in a small town called Bellbrook. Our shop is in Centerville. I consider DC area home (my high school years). I am an East coast /Southern girl. Ended up in Ohio after 5 years in the Philippines with my first husband. Got divorced, stayed, fell in love again, and here I stay. My youngest considers Ohio home. Not sure about my oldest.....probably Kentucky.
So I learned the other day that Washington the state has tumbleweed! That is as hard to imagine as acreage in New York!

@trucker743- you look awesome!2

Kylia, you look pretty good too. Let’s keep up the good work. I lived in Upper Arlington, a suburb just north of Columbus most of my years until my 20s, went to college for a couple of years at Miami U in Oxford OH a little south of you. I’d fallen in love with Washington the first time I saw it at 16 in 1959. We actually experienced tumbleweeds and a big dust storm on our drive through Eastern Washington, our drier side. It’s desert-like in places, and wheat country like Kansas in others except it’s lush rolling hills. Look up the term Palouse - it’s what they call it, and it’s lovely, but too hot in the summer for me.
I moved to Southern CA to get married, then just sort of worked my way up the coast through another husband, an abusive boyfriend, and finally a relationship with myself for a few years, then a “third time’s the charm” marriage that lasted until I lost him about 7 years ago.
My 3 daughters all live in the Seattle vicinity and my son near Columbus in Reynoldsburg. 11 grands live here, and two more back East. 2 great grandsons there, one great granddaughter here and another on the way up on Whidbey Island in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

bananasandoranges wrote: »@Machka9 congratulations on your work done and exercise. Do you like dressing up for work?
Sometimes.
I have developed a collection of comfortable dressy clothes, so that helps.
But about 2 seconds after I'm home, I'm either into exercise clothes (if I'm going to exercise) or as little as decently possible. I spent the last 16 days in comfy shorts, undies and tank top ... and that's one of the reasons I like summer rather than winter. Winter involves too many clothes.
Ever since I had measles in 2016, and especially with the way my hot flashes are, I find many clothes way too scratchy and irritating. Occasionally I find something that is OK, so I try to get several of them.

Hi Gals,
Pip – congrats on a non-phone job and on honoring Lenny’s memory by getting the trunk to his mom. Great to see you write!
Olivia! Here’s to you being healthy again.
Janetr – sending tons of hugs!
Betsey – sending continued good thoughts.
Rebecca – Great letter writing to your son, I know this has been hard on you.
Barbie – thanks so much for starting us off again.
Michele – I have found that the “new” apple hybrids like pink ladies are great eating apples, not really cooking apples – for cooking Pipens or Granny Smith are my go to.
Carol – ((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))
Heather – great looking table and even better price!
Lisa – I had never heard of that word, but so so powerful! I do think that weight loss has a emotional as well as physical component.
Retirement - So I will “retire” in segments, at 65 I have a small pension from I company I worked for years ago and it will begin to kick in that will cover the expected Medicare premiums (which will be more than I am paying now, but for care that is better, but I can’t currently afford) ((for those not familiar with US medical/insurance care – when you turn 65 you can sign up for government health insurance called Medicare, for most folks if you do not sign up following the guidelines you can do it later but you pay more)) I will not change the amount of work I do, just the cash part will get a bit better. Then when I turn 70 I will begin to get social security (government retirement) and take the mandatory distributions from my 401K (personal retirement plan). My hope is to move to a smaller town in the next 9 years (I’ll turn 70 in 9 years) and then run an Airbnb for a room or two from 70-? In my new location.
The holiday time was good, and I have one more friend to meet up with. I do cards, gifts, decorations, pretty much everything, and do love it all.
Kim from N. California

Beth – the absolute best comfort food is the food someone else makes, I’m with you.
Bananas – that’s why Vince keeps all the boxes until he’s satisfied that the item works.
Well, my neighbor called to say that she wasn’t coming so it was just Jess’ friend, her hubby, her son, and her MIL, Jess, Vince and myself. Vince does NOT want to do this ever again after the holidays. To have to keep all the decorations up for 2 weeks and Denise won’t even come. (I know I’m just talking right now) Denise had better think twice about how she treats us, the only thing she’s entitled to from our will is $1. M – don’t worry, I will cool down in a bit.
Welcome everyone new!
Sharon near Seattle – congrats!
When you make an apple pie, do you slice your apples or leave them in chunks? By chunks I mean like using an apple slicer and then just cutting the apple segments up into maybe 4 pieces.

"Todo"s and "done"Done: veg prep, church,Cleaning investment falling by wayside. Missed an opportunity today while Joe walked dogs down to the lane, but no, instead I kept watching TV. Pfui!
Bonus: 60 mins firehall paperwork and followup, 5 mins engagement training both Tumble and Shadow, printer setup.
to do: BBB&B, Post office, make tuna salad, invest 10 mins cleaning MBth, firehall safety hint, carryover invest 10 mins, (including dusting) cleaning LR, Dr. Holley voice mail, call Carolyn, look at 20 for 20 what can you do and when?,
Welcome jsophiethomas, Carol in PA, Christina in Ontario, and funusername in Ireland.
NYKaren “recognizing this and choosing differently” That’s it. That’s the intent behind 2020’s phrase “Pay Attention!”
SuziQ Con VERY grats for discarding weight over the holidays. Well done!
Lisa thank you for the Kintsugi definition and especially the pics. “More beautiful for having been broken.” A deep truth there.
KJ fingers cramping from being crossed so long for your zoning approval
Lanette Riding with Katla? Oww, afraid those flexor rubber bands would SNAP! Did a few gentle stretches in the hot tub this afternoon, but what really seems to help (besides therapeutic torture uh er massage) is sitting on a stability ball for at least half my computer time. Got the printer working today, yay!
Heather love “sometimes you just have to ask” stories like your bedside table.
Kylia ((hugs)) for all you’ve been through but especially for this hard time with Sara. That is great news about Aubrey!
Annie isn’t this the second time you’ve fainted or nearly while exercising?
Katla “tincture of time” love the phrase, hate that it won’t heal your knee.
Sharon Brava! Bravissima!
Kim you were missed. Let us know where and when you open your Airbnb, I’ll come stay! Will it be dog friendly?
Michele I peel the apples and slice them fairly thinly, interspersing layers with butter/sugar/spice makes for a mouthwatering pie (not that I’ve made one in years…!)
Tomorrow morning its back to BB&B and I’m a little nervous about this gimpy hip. Oh well, nothing ventured… After getting gas and stopping at the post office I will have no excuses not to invest just 20 mins in MBth and LR, whether Joe’s in the house or not! If dry, may lop a little more. A quick 5:30 drop in at the firehall to hint to chief about documenting Safety meetings, then sweeten with the good news about the grant. Sticks and carrots. [sigh]

Tips that have worked for me
Put your current numbers into MFP
Select sedentary as your activity level
Choose how much you'd like to lose (i.e. 1 lb/week)
MFP will give you the number of calories to eat
Eat those calories
... and weigh (with food scale) and log every bite.
A few extra things have helped me along the way:
1) Exploring my grocery stores and markets to find delicious, filling low calorie foods. It's amazing what's out there.
2) Exercising as much as possible. Exercise gives me extra calories to work with so that I can have things like pizza now and the ... but to keep my sanity and not wear myself out, my exercise quantity varies as does what I do for exercise.
10 Things to Stop Doing If You Want to Exercise
https://www.verywellfit.com/things-to-stop-if-you-want-to-exercise-1231403
3) Eating how I want to eat. This is where everyone is different ... some people prefer to employ fasting, others like high protein diets, some like vegetarian diets, some like to eat 2 or 3 meals a day, others like to graze. Go with what works for you.
Personally, if I had to define what I do, my diet is probably most similar to a Mediterranean diet with a vegetarian lean ... and I'm a grazer. I also have to adjust what I do depending on my cycling events ... they're tricky because I need the fuel without going overboard.
And stick to it for 5 weeks, then reassess how things are going.
And now, I'm thinking about goals for 2020.
It is difficult to make goals because I'm not sure what's going to happen one day to the next. I plan, God laughs ... or something like that. The last couple years have been a lesson in patience and flexibility and giving up a lot of what I would like to do in the interests of what needs to be done.
However, I do have some goals I'd like to accomplish, if possible ...
How to Set SMART Goals for 2020
SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely.
https://www.daveramsey.com/blog/smart-goal-setting
Interestingly, he talks about 7 significant areas ...
Financial Goals: Start saving for retirement, get out of debt, or use a monthly zero-based budget.
Spiritual Goals: Pick up a new devotional, start a daily journal, or plug in to a group at your church.
Fitness Goals: Hit the gym more often, take the stairs, and remember to eat your veggies.
Educational Goals: Go back to finish your degree, get your MBA, or read a good book every month.
Family Goals: Plan one-on-one dates with your kids, have a standing date night with your spouse, or make it a point to call your mom and dad on Sunday nights.
Career Goals: Work toward a promotion or raise, learn something new about your line of work, or polish up and send out resumés if you’re looking for a new career path.
Social Goals: Say yes when someone invites you out to lunch or a social gathering—or, for some of us, say no more often.
I've modified the suggested list above slightly ...
Organisation/Financial Goals -- Getting our taxes done and other paperwork in order. Some at end of January, some in Feb, some in June ... and full speed ahead in October.
Spiritual/Relax & Recreation Goals -- I'd like to start attending church a bit more regularly. I'd like to take more time for me ... like lunch walks a couple times a week, perhaps more photography, definitely more sleep. I got another sleep mask today!
Fitness Goals -- Exercise, Eating, Sleeping -- Working up to running 5 km at least a couple times a month. Working up to cycling 50 km at least once a month. This month has started reasonably well with a decent amount of cycling!
Educational Goals -- Uni! I would like to finish my Master's degree in 2020. Submitted another assignment yesterday!
Family/Medical Goals -- Husband -- Never-ending stream of medical appointments + projects with 2 or 3 different organisations. And me! A goal is to get me into healthy shape again! Next up is our Shingles Vaxes on Friday.
Career Goals -- One of the main things my area is planning to work on is streamlining the processes a bit. Meanwhile I need to learn a lot more SQL and as much about what 2 different people I work/worked with did. I'm also on the board of two organisations now. Both interest me a lot, but I'm also hoping that taking on leadership roles might help advance my career a little.
Back to work today ... getting things sorted out.
Social Goals -- Cycling Club. I've made a detailed list of what I need to do, which helps.
-- My Personal Website -- I have started working on this. I'd post it here, but not sure if I can: machka . net This has a social aspect in that we go to Wordpress meetings now and then.
Challenges -- I've joined 3 challenges in the Challenges forum.
If challenges appeal to you, don't forget about MFP's Challenges subforum:

Sleep schedule is off but I'm sure it will settle down once I get back to my regular work schedule, teaching makes me tired and therefore I sleep better! I'm up early with a cup of coffee and a catch up with you all.
My new actions for January will include looking at how I do things habitually, like coming home and collapsing on the couch. I'm much better setting up triggers first thing in the morning, like packing healthy food for the day and setting up good lessons and the like. So with that in mind, I've laid out my exercise clothes and will slip into them first thing when I get through the door, walk on the treadmill with a pod cast! Next up will be dinner prep while listening to the news or music perhaps. These are 2 little behaviors/habits that I would like to use to stop my sedentary afternoon slide. I will continue to add a penny to my treadmill jar and mark my calendar to indicate my streaks. I love keeping tabs on my actions until they become second nature/habitual. I've done this with financials, work and food so I am thinking it should work with this new goal to be less sedentary, or at least less spiraling down into inactivity. New habits take time, strategy and patience!
Yesterday marked the 4th year since my mom passed; I did have the good fortune of sitting with her for christmas dinner one last time four years ago. Her voice, her lightness, her love swirls around me at the most spontaneous times, reassuring or chiding, always starting with "Oh, Karen". I'm so blessed to still have that memory, her voice resonates, what a person she was. She suffered from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder quite severely, flares were significant yet she soldiered through as best she could, her love for her children showed through whenever the disease was more dormant. I am the person I am today because of her.

Good Monday morning from Ohio,
May you all have a great day back in reality for those of us still working. Remember to make the best choice you can at the time. I love that this group is still here and so supportive!
My youngest made it safely to Detroit last night. I kept wanting to tell her to leave extra time to get where she is going, use Waze, stay with groups, etc. Then I just deleted those texts, told her I loved her and am proud of the woman she has become and to stay safe. I told her about the "mothering" texts I deleted. She said that was okay. She loves me too. This is the first time she has been away from family and solo. Scary for me. Prayers for her safety while she is there.
I am going to get a few things done before heading into work. Will check in later.

@klanders30 What wonderful memories of your Mom! Hugs sent your way!1

Starting back to work full-time this week. Enjoyed not working. Had good visit with youngest son yesterday. I made a new cabbage/sausage/potato soup recipe yesterday that turned out quite well. I have been trying to make a new recipe at least once a month. Have discovered that I like different tastes and don't have to rely on things as I have always prepared them.
Talked to youngest about moving. He agreed there is a not a ton to keep me in my home town. Most all family has moved elsewhere. My first step is to start mapping out what I feel needs to be done here before moving on. The planning does not commit me to anything.
Off to do some stretches and putting on something besides sweatpants. Lunch and snacks are prepped. Going to try to do gym after work then need to stop by funeral home for visitation for staff member who's mother died (she is part of my management team, don't go to every such event for every staff member). I know what it is like to lose mother. As Karen said, I am constantly reminded of my mother and the wonderful lessons she taught me.
Have a good Monday all,

My word for 2020 is "MINDFULL". I tend to cruise through things. I want to be more aware of the moments in my life. I have written out my 20 for 20 goals using SMART from Machka. Keeping my word in mind as well. Yay! I accomplished something already today!

Grandkids here. DH has them out in the garden playing skipping with the old washing line that broke.
I started the decoupage rabbit with Edie and she did quite a bit of it before she flagged, so I called a halt. We can continue any time.
We are going to the café round the corner for lunch and I still have the aeroplane folding in reserve.

NYKaren - Last year was 20 years my mother's been gone, and the memories still remain. The memories sustain, comfort, chide, and, on occasion, still make me grieve. Each year is a little less of the grieving, and more of the joy in what she was. I'm glad you value your mother's memory and what she made of you.
Kylia - You're an amazing mother.
Kim - always good to see you, and impressed that you plan to keep working until you're 70. Since we can earn up to $17,640 a year without penalty, dropping back to part-time at 62 and collecting my social security is looking better by the minute. It won't quite make up the difference... but if our plan to pay off our house in the next two years works out, we'll pay off the house in December of 2021 and then I'll have the choice of whether to retire in April of 2022. I figured out the math, and the benefits even out between retirement at 62 and retirement at 70 at about age 79. Since only one ancestor has lived that long, I'm figuring it makes more sense to retire early.
Today is the day that our grandson, young Levi Matthew will be delivered by C-section up in Kansas, at Fort Riley. Keep a good thought for my daughter's delivery, if you will. With my medical appointments this week, we just couldn't go, which made my husband quite happy. Supposedly, we're meant to drive up there in the next couple weeks - he's planning to take a Friday off and we will drive up. I'm letting him take the lead on this one, and waiting to find out what happens from the doctor's appointment.
Love y'all,

Good morning from Texas!
I need support and motivation this year since I seem to fade when I'm on my own mid year. It looked like this group is friendly and supportive... And ya'lls accomplishments are very motivating!
Retired January 2019 at 58 years old to focus on myself. I was too stressed at work in a strategic position that ate up all my time. Since DH and I agreed that we no longer needed the money it was "Me time".
All 3 kids (B29, G27, B26) graduated college (debt free), working, living on their own, supporting themselves. Oldest married in 2018, youngest married 2019, daughter marries in 2020!
My word for 2020 is "Focus". Don't lose focus on what is best for me ... I need to lose the weight that I let creep on over the 30 years of raising kids & working. I kept most of it off the first 7 years of marriage before kids.
2019 success: Lost 15 lbs and kept 10 lbs off
2020 weight goal: <200 in 2020 (aka 35+ lbs)
Hard to think of 5 & 10 year goals. But I would say I want a future traveling, active, financially stable, living with a waterfront view and happy. Weight wise weigh 140-160 lbs which is still high for my height 5'3" but I can't see myself at 123lb like HS or 135lb like wedding weight 36 years ago. Time will tell.
2020 Smart Goals:
Financial Goals: Continue tracking and managing our savings, budget using 1 salary and not dip into savings (daughter's wedding is the exception). Already debt free and enough in 401K & retirement plans & savings for both DH and I to not work ... so he is working for medical insurance until 65 or we decide to do something different.
Spiritual Goals: Following Bishop Barron's Daily Gospel Reflection.
Fitness Goals:
- Find workout routine that works (walk, bike, planks, yoga, swim, take advantage of retirement to be more active); target 70k steps per week:
- Walk & Bike on MWF
- Planks, hand weights, yoga TTH mornings
- Long Walk Saturday/Sunday
- Drink more water (target min 64 oz daily; start with 1 glass before coffee)
- Journal Food Daily (tracking with MFP since 12/28/2018; basically skipped June-Dec 2019; recommit 1/1/2020)
- Daily Vitamins (Dr’s orders; need to not ignore)
- Drink less alcohol (3 AF days per week; ~12 AF days per month; limit 1-2 glasses per day)
Educational Goals: Learning Spanish! They say that learning a language is great for memory improvement as you age. This was a goal for retirement. Never studied the language before but chose it because we love traveling to Spain and our fishing camp is near the Mexico border. Daily Duolingo exercises plus free class at church during summers.
Family Goals: Create travel plans for DH & I. We are terrible about planning ahead and not going the places we talk about ... defaulting to heading to the fishing camp instead. Plan 2 trips for 2020!
Career Goals: Retired so there is that! But find rewarding volunteer opportunities. Currently teaching English 2x per week at my church to adults that are from around the world (India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, Italy, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Columbia, Venezuela).
Social Goals: Use what I learned in "The Friendship Project" to make new friends and keep old ones close. Reach out ... use Friendship Friday as a reason to reach out and talk or meet up with friends. Need to reduce the number of evening activities that involve wine & food: too many opportunities so either figure out how to not drink at these functions or focus on those that I can control my actions (drop Sisters that Sip & Dining Out groups, continue with 2 book clubs, reduce the number of times per month I attend 3 different alumnae meetings, limit 1 glass of wine or none @ bunco). Do sporting clays more with the ladies ... since I don't eat or drink with them!

Good morning ladies, welcome to the start of a new week!
Lisa - Happy Birthday Levi, hope all goes smoothly for his grand entrance . And hope your Dr visit goes well. Love your word Kintsugi, what a beautiful thought! I might borrow it for myself.
Lily - welcome! So glad you could retire, sounds like you have a lot lined up to keep you busy. Thanks for the great intro information, I feel like we know you already!
Heather - what a perfect table. You never know what the universe will gift you with.
Kim - thanks for catching us up. Planning early for retirement is a great idea.
I've been getting a lot of walking in this past week, in case there came a day I wasn't able to walk. Today just might be one of those days. There's a flood watch right now.
Anyhow, one of my "goals" was to average 6000 steps per week. I'm way past that average as of today and it's probably good to give it a break for a day. I'll hit Walmart tomorrow morning and be off to a good start, lol.
Closing for now - make it a stupendous day!
