Morning ladies, Michelle my DOS turns 65 in June, she was planning to retire on her b-day this coming June. This layoff accelerated her plan by 2 months, but actually gives her a windfall of around 8 months of extra pay by way of severance, so no worries there. It felt funny to her as she has been gathering up her courage to make the decision and write the resignation letter herself, that has been taken off her plate, if it were me, I would have been surprised but thrilled. Right now, she is just in a state of shock. Despite all of her disabilities, she rarely missed a single day of work and commuted 1.5 hours each way using a combination of public and para-transit. She is a remarkably determined and courageous person in many ways.
I feel the opposite of late, very petty and mopey the past few days, my best self is in hibernation I think! My DH gently spoke about resetting my way of thinking of late. He certainly is not wrong and when he makes a quiet suggestion along those lines, I tend to take note I will spend some time looking for a way to reframe my attitude about worklife, not just wallowing in frustration, "rear view mirror" thinking and other circular, non-constructive headgames.

Good Friday!
I have been on MFP for 10 years......It still amazes me that when I eat wisely, it is easy to stay in calorie goal.;) Really wanted chocolate last night......tired and frustrated......chose yogurt with granola. I am proud of decision.
Barrett Jackson auto auction in Scottsdale has been cool. Tired as it runs late on tv, but time with Husband.
@klanders30 I love that your husband quietly reminded. I am amazed at how attitudes effect everything around us. YOU ARE SMART, ACTIVE, AND LOVING! You've got this!
Gotta get ready for work.

Machka- Very cool wombat facts! I saved your link for an animal unit I will do with the kids. Thanks for sharing!
I still find the animals here fascinating. This is a good article giving a bit of an overview about Australian animals.

In coming days, weeks, month (into Feb) ...
-- Orchid regeneration. I know almost nothing about orchids but was given one some time ago. Turns out it grew a baby and really needs some help.
-- Bees. My husband wants to have a hive. I'm not sure yet, but there's a documentary movie in February we're planning to go see. (And yes, Wendy in NZ had bees)
-- Assignment 3. I've started working on it ... putting together some ideas. Hopefully I'll make some progress this weekend.
-- Final Exam. We receive it and have 2 weeks to work on it. It's a paper on a topic we'll find out when the time comes.
-- Semester 1. I've enrolled in 2 courses. I haven't done 2 courses in one semester throughout this whole program till now. But I want to get it done.
-- Cycling Event. Organising the one I posted earlier. And attending an AGM for the club.
-- Penny Farthing Cycling Event. This one we're just attending for fun ... it's fun to watch the races and so on.
-- Pilates. Starting again in early Feb.
Then there's some Brain Injury stuff and Wordpress stuff and medical appointments as usual. Plus work, of course.
Today, I walked to the Botanical Garden and back at lunch. That was nice.
And I think I'm going to go to bed a bit earlier than I usually do on a weekend. I'm tired.

I've read that a lot of this is due to the very high cost of living there.

We have had that starting to happen here too. Now it is too cold so the tents are gone for now. What some have done on park land is build shelters that are covered with brush to make them warmer. We also have those that make what I call a nest right underneath the freeways on the overpasses.
What is happening here is the big companies like We Buy Ugly Houses are buying up the cheaper homes. Anything under $200,000 is considered cheap here. They then turn around and rent them.
I must get a plea a month to sell our son's home to them.
I wish instead of trying to build new affordable housing which really means tax payers subsidizing the exorbitant cost of building that our city would buy these homes. Once bought they would give credits to tenants to keep their homes up. They also would find a program to give them the tools and training to keep the property up and programs to help them to buy their homes.
Having lived next to a foreclosed home. (Happened twice and then having that property turned into a rental.) I know this practice of buying homes to use a rental is not good for a neighborhood.
The last person to foreclose the home next to us refinanced the home right before the bubble burst in 2008 here. He bragged how he used the 72,000 like a credit card and did not put a dime back into the home. He would only whine and say poor me. Part of why he got so much is we and the neighbor on the other side keep up our property. He only talked to me to complain or try to sell me something.
Fortunately he is long gone. I do miss his poor wife. Now we have delightful new neighbors who take pride in their home.
I am gearing up for the snow storm that is to hit later today. It will start around noon and go until tomorrow. I am glad DH got to Chicago before it hit. I stayed to take care of the snow here and at son's. DS is not doing well and needs me here, too.
I am taking my own advice, when I say to those who are trying to help loved ones who are ill , I am making sure I am taking good care of me. I am taking extra care with my teeth, I bought some nice bath salts to take a long bath, I bought some nice hand cream to pamper my hands. I am reading a book The Art of Noticing that is prompting me to reframe how I look at my surroundings, and I just read Outer Order, Inner Calm that reminded me to included Beauty in my life everyday and to reconsider how and why I keep and use my possessions.3 -
Carol- Praying it’s just gastrointestinal upset easy fix or need for a good change.Had a cat like that I discovered He had a corn allergy. Had to make sure all foods had no corn. Dog of mine had this issue found he had flea allergies had got some fleas out for a walk (Doctor felt it needed walks after it stayed inside permanently I just ran back y forth let it chase lol that’s a lot for a weiner dog) .
Homelessness is everywhere anymore - PT jobs everywhere in some areas if they loose 1 Part time job they can’t make a full paycheck.(A lot of places cut back to PT after Affordable Care A t to avoid buying insurance in my state especially! A Full time job is impossible to find even if you find one long lines for it they cut you off a few hours shy of 40hrs again to not pay for insurance). If you get a PT job but can’t find a few others willing to work with the one you have or a boss refuses to let you work for anyone else while working for them your up the creek on making a rent payment .
Another issue is Drugs,Alcoholism, mental illness (a lot of clinics here closed or rarely give meds anymore even to bipolar a,schizophrenic, etc leading them to loose jobs y family), child support not paid leaves many in trouble, some choose to be homeless knew a few it was to avoid paying child support, one was homeless because he had so many kids with too many women actually paid his child support leaving him homeless when he didn’t have a woman to bum off of, abuse at home you find yourself either running away cause the streets are safer than home or the abuser tosses you out without your papers to money, renters getting a notice to move out but landlord keeps the deposit they can’t afford the deposit first 1-2 months rent at the next place( some keep it even with no damages illegal but some do this...others the person destroying the home they had no choice) ,health issues some have no insurance because like me preexsisting illness you get quotes of $900+ per month to have it then have to have money for deduct table so their in the street if they pay for life saving medicines, some can’t find a job due to a criminal past to the guy who came in same time got the job again while their turned down or lack of education or over educated (My Dad has to lie at some jobs to get hired he has high degrees they wouldn’t hire him he’d reapply after a month put a lower education rank like he only went 2-4yrs bam got the exact same job he was turned down for verbally they stated over educated). Lots of reasons people are on the street but needing a 2 person income to survive in many countries now is the main issue (many are single, divorced,or single parent households now we can’t afford a 2 income living especially with full time jobs being out of reach for the main majority of people now).
I was homeless with then 7yr old Daughter almost a month when Abuser in the snow dropped us off no money, clothes, shoes,or anything. Daughter 7 at the time only had a flimsy see through Barbie night gown on for kids y panties nothing else in the snow. I had no shirt or bra or much of anything else managed to grab a item as he dragged us out which I draped around her took all I had left on off to keep my baby warm fearing frost bite I hid her y me in a public restroom 🚽 hit the blow dryer to warm us his if drinks stumbled in (bars were getting out men mainly). A homeless man found me y her took us to a junk yard covering me in his shirt y coat we stayed in a vehicle no heat no bathroom but was better than the public bathroom barely dressed.People of the town grabbed clothes for us.She went to school hoarded her food we bathed in that same public restroom.A group of men got together forced the abuser to give us our paperwork (social security number to birth certificates y driver license),my car, keys, purse which I grabbed hidden money quickly but not bank accounts he stole all that he could y maxed my credit cards out, a few clothes. We went to my parents found a lawyer who freed us ! We ate while homeless by working at restaurants under the table in exchange for our supper. I didn’t want a handout pride. Since then I have given tuna packets to homeless y money y even helped them find work. Figure what goes around comes around I had a lot to repay back.
Also was homeless 2002 hill country Texas due to a flood taking my home so Daughter y me lived in hotels, car, people couches a few days ,a quad plex with a slum lord before we got on our feet.

SERENDIPITY! Just a minute ago I got an email thanking me for my Christmas donation to Crisis and a video showing the good the money does. It's not just first aid, it can really help someone get back on their feet. I am suspicious of charities in general as I feel the government should be funding basic help for people, not charity, but I find the idea of a Christmas dinner and a warm welcome irresistible.
TBFTGOGGI and I'm not religious.

My word for 2020 is ‘journey’ I need to remember that and journey out of my depression.
Thanks for the encouragement ladies. Really need it.

“Wombats” just live that word. Interesting creatures!
“Home” is where I’m currently living. Like you Matchka, moved so much I don’t feel like any one place is my go-to home.

Machka: The groups of homeless that I’ve noticed near freeway on and off ramps did not seem to have visible bicycles. We do see bicyclists in the summer out on adventures traveling toward the coast or mountains. They’re totally different in character from the homeless that I’ve seen. Bicyclists are organized, physically fit and purposeful. They usually avoid Oregon winter weather. Our summers are beautiful but our winters are wet and cold much of the time. :ohwell:
Karen: I love the Wonder Woman scissors.
(((Carol in GA))) I am so sorry your Pom is having a hard time. :flowerforyou:
Margaret: Your observations match what I’ve seen very well. This doesn’t seem to be rare or isolated situations. Many people are struggling and many others are profiting.
Heather: Harry & Meghan’s “nan” is used to getting her own way. Healthy birds leave the nest. They seem like healthy birds to me.
Meanwhile, back at the fort, a self-centered and obnoxious man is on trial in the Senate of the US.

Carol- just be there for your Pom. He will really appreciate it as hard as it is for you. Keep us in your pocket! Feel all the love and support from us. Sorry, the time is now. It has been a hard few months for our fur babies.

Reminder ladies, let's please keep our political comments off this group. That's one of the things I really love about it. I think we get enough political commentary from other sources, and I'm about full up.
Thank you.3 -

Carol - I know how much you have loved and cared for the Pom. My loving thoughts are winging your way.
The cleaner has just left. She did a decent job. It's very hard work with three floors, all the stairs and needing to move furniture etc after all this time. I have asked her to come back next Saturday to spruce up the guest floor etc before our guests arrive. She is charging more than our previous cleaner, but I don't begrudge it.
Lots of watchable TV tonight, some of which I'm recording, including Granchester. Our favourite tv gardener is travelling around the USA looking at gardens. Last week was great fun!
I found my old CVs on a very old USB stick. I had three, each one emphasising a different aspect of my work. Got them on to the new laptop and Dropbox, but somehow failed to combine them into a new folder. I used to drag and drop on my old laptop, but that doesn't seem to work. A puzzlement. How to put a Word file into a new folder?

Saw youngest son on Messenger last night! He answered me "Hi Mom"! It texted back and forth for a good hour. My heart was full, and I slept great.
Carol hugs! My heart aches for your situation. 😢
There is some homelessness here on Whidbey. Mostly Meth addicts. Our free bus service and Garage Of Blessings which gives away free stuff, makes it easy to get a handout plus travel to different parts of the island. We do have a service which works with the homeless camps, contacting the owners of properties, works with the police, etc, and the places get cleaned up. For how long is the issue. They did a huge cleanup of the summer. Now I think they inhabit indoor places, because of this cold snap. A couple were taking turns sitting on the indoor couch at Starbucks. 😟

Carol, many thoughts are with you. I'm sorry, my friend.0

I’m sorry that my comments were offensive. I’ll be more careful about what I say here.
I had a lovely yoga class this morning. It was well attended and productive. I have been chilly today, and I’m not sure why. The air is on the damp side but we are used to damp weather in January. :ohwell:
We are sourdough fans. We got our first starter from a friend in Eugene OR in the early 1970’s. We still have that original strain and love it. DS is no longer able to digest gluten so we started a second crock using white rice flour to establish a gluten free sourdough. It worked well enough for DH and I didn’t mind. We’ve decided to create a new version to replace white rice flour, because the white rice flour version turns to sugar in DH’s system very rapidly. He’s diabetic and sugar is something that needs careful management. The new version is just getting started in our kitchen. We bought Bob’s Redmill organic brown rice flour and are using it to start our new strain of sourdough. I am hopeful that it will improve the waffles and pancakes we make and will work better with DH’s blood sugar levels. Keeping my fingers crossed for a good outcome.
