According to Garrett, the worst offenders are towels, which provide a very cosy home for all coronaviruses — including the latest deadly strain.
“Inside your household, remove all of the towels from your bathrooms and kitchen immediately, and replace them with clean towels that have the names of each family member on them,” she advises.
“Instruct everybody in your home to only use their own towels and never touch another family member’s. Wash all towels twice a week. Damp towels provide terrific homes for viruses, like common colds, flus, and, yes, coronaviruses

It has become common knowledge that the virus can survive on doorknobs but how many of us worry about the ones we have at home? If someone in your family gets sick, you better get used to washing those handles frequently.
“Be careful with doorknobs. If it’s possible to open and close doors using your elbows or shoulders, do so,” Garrett advises.
“Wear gloves to turn a doorknob – or wash your hands after touching it. If anybody in your home takes sick, wash your doorknobs regularly. Similarly, be cautious with stairway banisters, desktops, cell phones, toys, laptops – any objects that are handheld.
“As long as you handle only your own personal objects, you will be OK – but if you need to pick up someone else’s cell phone or cooking tools or use someone else’s computer keyboard, be mindful of not touching your face and wash your hands immediately after touching the object.”
While this has been written because of the coronavirus, it is actually true for all flus and viruses.
I've been nagging our metro service (bus) to publish what they do to keep the buses clean ... how often they clean the buses, what parts get cleaned, etc. So far they've informed me they see no need to publish what they do or make any changes to it.
I nagged my university about the same thing, went to a lecture yesterday and the minute I walked in and looked around I thought, "This lecture theatre has been cleaned!!" Probably for the first time in years. Then I noticed they had also repainted some of the walls. The walls are wood along the sides for acoustics but around the wood and the whole front wall used to be the darkest dingiest blue. I love the colour blue, but that blue wall + dirty, dusty lecture theatre + no ventilation = Machka Asleep. All the blue is now white and it looks so much fresher and brighter. I also got the impression that there was better ventilation but maybe it was just that everything was so fresh and clean.
My office is starting to discuss what measures we might take.

You should be taking every precaution you normally would to avoid catching the flu.

Allie: You seem to be moving in a good direction. I’m pleased to hear that you’re going to your physician. Hopefully he will be able to help you find ways to manage your stress. He or she may have some good advice about how to communicate with your employer, too.
Machka: I love the bike poster and its message about keeping your balance. I also love the "protect yourself and others from getting sick" posters. I tried to see whether I could post them too but no luck. They have very good advice!

Kylia - I don’t know how you work with family. I love mine but need a break from them.
Allie - I hope your doctor has some suggestions for you, maybe there is a stress leave or something that would give you time to search for another job.
I carted my adult daughter around for a while before she got her car, it’s frustrating but to me it’s what family does for each other. I bet Dan is very grateful you are close and able to help.
Ginny - Canada must be more like the UK with test results, we don’t see them here at all either.

I dreamt last night that I had Alzheimer’s and couldn’t speak. My caregivers were trying to make me shower and I couldn’t tell them how claustrophobic I get in the shower. I woke up this morning thinking I needed to lay out a care plan for my loved ones to know how to take care of me. I think the talk that I attended last night really resonated with me.
I also have had feelings lately that no one is ever going to be there to take care of me that I will always be taking care of others. Don’t know why I’m feeling that way, I need to give it some thoughts.
I am looking forward to the weekend. I am making wedding invitations for one of my daughters friends.

Yes, I just had an email from my university mentioning social distance too.
And I really don't have any idea who would take care of me if something should happen down the road. My parents are 79 this year and aren't getting any younger. My husband is 12 years older than me and has a brain injury. My brother is off in the far reaches of the US and I barely know his kids.
As I get into my 70s in about 20 years time, I could envision that life could become very lonely and if anything happened to me, I could be completely on my own.
With that in mind, I do want to move back to Canada to live near my parents and some other family members who I don't know really well at this point (cousins, etc.). That move can't happen right away, but maybe in the next 5 years. That would also put me a bit closer to my brother and his kids.
While I love Australia, and would happily keep living here for the rest of my life (but maybe in a different state), Australia does pose the problem of distance.

they give me the resident Dr, so I have had one for the last year who is my sons Age, he is sweet but just upped my antidepressants and told me to try progressive relaxation and meditation, and to come back in a April for a physical. he did listen ,and said to keep looking for work..7 -

Coronavirus- Like Beth, my hubby and I go round and round on this issue. He is super fearful about flus and epidemic/pandemic situations (and I try to be understanding, because he has a horrible immune system). I am of the clean, clean, clean the house/surfaces, cover mouth/nose when coughing/sneezing, and wash, wash, wash your hands! I am sure my home, as a childcare home is pretty germy while the kids are here; BUT I also know that all toys played with, surfaces, door knobs, handles, light switch plates, door jambs, etc are all wiped down with disinfectant as soon as the last child is picked up. I have washcloths and towels (and dishes) that are color coded (each child is assigned a color) and the are washed daily. I have adult/guest towels available for non-kids. SO...this is a potentially germy place, but it is also cleaned better than most places. I am also not really a worrier by nature.
Meditation - When I was a child, my mother taught me to get through things through meditation (although not sure if she knew it was meditation). Nightmares, injuries, anger, sadness...I have very strong images of her presence/voice leading me through breathing during those times. With a soothing hand on my forehead she would say "Close your eyes and breathe with me." and I would match my breathing to hers and feel everything slow down. I continue to do this (and hear her voice) as an adult, I have taught my own children and use it with my childcare kiddos. Amazingly, it has been in the past five years or so that meditation is becoming a way to calm children down in classrooms and childcare centers.

Macha I bought my own canister of disinfecting wipes for when I teach. The first thing I do is wipe down the keyboard, mouse, doorknob, markers for the smart board, and light switches in the classroom. I also put a paper towel down on the table in the faculty lounge when I go to eat. You are right their are other things floating about other than corona virus. As a greeting trying to to do Namaste greeting where you put hands together and give a nod to a person.
They other thing I do before I go to teach is spray a an essential oil on my hair and clothes I like cloves for this purpose to help prevent me from getting lice. It is one of the best for bacteria. Eucalyptus is one of the best for viruses.
I do need to remind myself essential oils are like medicines and need to be used sparingly and for the correct purpose.
Kelly I do deep breathing when I have a stressful situation. Yesterday I was looking forward to teaching the class I had. I don't know what happened since last I was there. It was a different class. One boy decided the best way to solve conflicts was to shove at people. He almost pushed a little girl who was running right into me potentially causing me serious injury. Needless to say he was went to another room and I stopped and did some deep breathing exercises in front of the other students.

Barbara AHMOD - been meaning to comment, love your "I get to do" projects. They are really blessings, aren't they?
Karen in VA - thank you for the "Five Wishes" link. I need to pull out our wills and medical directives and make sure these things are covered. Really need to get DH to discuss some of this stuff. He doesn't have a DNR but if I find him collapsed some day and barely responsive, does he prefer the minimum or does he want go through the ordeal of hospitals and extensive procedures (depending on the cause.)
Kelly - I totally understand Tim's fear of germs, living with the same situation in our house as you know. Hoping this Covid-19 is being blown way out of proportion like most things are on the news, lol. Is Tim up on the pneumonia vaccinations? My DH needs to get the second one. Seems like pneumonia is what eventually kills people with these respiratory illnesses.
I'm a huge fan of sambucus nigra - black elderberry lozenges or syrup if I feel a cold coming on. Also that aronia bush that popped up in our flower bed last year is purported to have berries that are good disease fighters and I managed to grab a handful last fall before the deer got to them. Knock wood, there hasn't been a cold or flu in our house in years.
I have grown into a compulsive hand washer and always use hand sanitizer every time I climb in the car after being in a public place. Not sure how effective it is, but it appears to give some protection.
Rebecca - MFP website has been cranky for me this past few days on the tablet and this laptop as well. Sometimes won't let me on at all, sometimes the food diary goals disappear - sets everything at zero! Did a big cookie clean-out with C-Cleaner so will see if that helps the laptop.
My end of month report - IF is working fine, happy with the 7 - 8 lbs I've lost and now at maintenance. Curious to see of this WOE (way of eating) drops a few more pounds. Simple and sustainable.
Skipping/delaying my morning meal works best, and closing my eating window at 4 or 5 is ideal-making sure I get enough fat and protein to last through the night so I don't go to bed with my stomach growling and think about the cookies in the pantry.
Made a junk food run to McD's yesterday afternoon and treated myself to a Quarter Pounder. Mistake! Not sure if it was the onions or what, but it did not sit well. And I am finally getting burned out on lentil/bean soups for lunch and suppertime salads so need to get busy and figure out what else to fix. Pulled a bunch of overwintered carrots (I have LOTS) and I see the kale coming back (don't tell the deer) so maybe some steamed or sauteed veggies will be a nice change.
OK ladies, I've rambled on enough. Dogs are telling me to move it.

Beth Buffalo Y Barbara SOC - I found it interesting that if she could be a Man that’s the type she'd want to be. Her character reminded me of that Kardashian’s boy or that newest Matt Fraser guy who got a show somehow. Guessing that’s the type of men she see In Hollywood all the time in her field of work . I found it interesting at the end she says what’s probably asked of her all the time (to be more sexy y relatable) . Her Father played the tennis 🎾 referee they said that part reminded me of the Williams sister issue recently a Males usually toss a fit on the court it was okay yet William sister did something it was plastered all over the news for months she was fined 10k in fines for throwing her racket down. I found it interesting that she managed to work the fact that many in the sport are crude y rude even one threatened to blow up the court (terroristic threat only got him a 3k penalty). Another which in the video they showed tossed a ball at the refs eye.

Still raining. Some communities have been flooded for 11 days. We are ok here, but it is miserable.
I dressed up in waterproof trousers and my anorak and went to the very local shops. Had nice conversations in the butchers and the deli. I bought, lamb neck fillet, pigs cheeks, goat meat, and veal escalopes, plus scotch eggs for tomorrow lunch. I'm making lamb and flageolet stew tonight with broccoli. In the deli I bought broccoli, arugula, cottage cheese, sourdough whole wheat bread, smoked mackerel, cauliflower and asparagus. All this is just round the corner from us.
Wrote some memoir. Then spent some time shifting money around to pay my credit card bill. My savings do not have a healthy glow.
Going to make the stew then hope to do some bonus exercise. Choice between dancing revision with DH, or rowing. Hmmm.

Happy Friday!
Even with only working 3 days this week, I am ready for the weekend (or maybe it's because of only working 3 days but jamming in 5 days' worth of work). I'm feeling a bit disorganized, although part of that is out of my control. I have things that I need to do but can't because I don't yet have access to the programs I need, so lots of things in "hold-mode". Makes me feel like I'm not getting anything done. I do like the new job though - at least the parts I've been able to do - so that's a plus.
Quiet weekend ahead. DH is planning on a hike Sunday morning so I may go with him. Weather is supposed to be really nice - hopefully a sign that spring is on it's way.
Booked our flights/hotel/car rental for our trip to Seattle in May. DH is more excited than I've seen him in a long time. We're both really looking forward to it, we need some time away.
I think I'm going to have to break down and see a doctor about my knee. It's giving me a lot of trouble when I run or even try to walk more than a mile or so at a time. It swells up and gets pretty stiff. I know I have a little bit of arthritis in there, but I think there may be more going on.

Did a Mica Hudson DVD today. It was one of the workouts that I downloaded but it’s so easy that I’m just going to throw it out. The plan for tomorrow is to do a pilates DVD.
Terrirchards – I couldn’t find a star to bookmark the page. However, UAC shows up under my groups. Wish I could get it to bookmark. One last question: who determines if you are in the Winners Circle?
Barbie – that’s why I’m wondering if I need an accountability group. One thing I would hate to do is show someone up. I know that I exercise regularly and if for some reason I can’t one day, I will go back to it the next day. Even if I can’t exercise for a few days in a row (like when I went to see Denise) I do get back into it. Same with eating.
Amber – that’s what I do, I don’t add in my exercise calories but if I go over a bit I figure it’ll all even out
You know, when I went to exercise the Y had taken the spin bikes out of the spin room and put them in the aerobic room since they’re having some sort of spinning open house. To me, they should be in the room where you will take spinning should you decide to. But that’s just me
Another thing: evidently the condo assoc. had some sort of spaghetti fund raiser and bought benches for outside two of the buildings. They had 5 (yes, five) in front of the clubhouse yet they spent the money on two more. Now is when you get all the snowbirds and I've never seen anyone sitting on one of the benches. To me, they really need lounge chairs by the pool. A lot more people use the pool than sit on benches. But I'm not a year-round resident so I really don't have much to say. I know one lady is going to bring up the topic of converting the tennis court into a pikleball court. To be honest, it probably won't go over since not a whole lot of people know what pickleball even is. I would rather spend this fund raiser money on something that even one person would use rather than something we already have. And I don't see why they don't charge a fee (even $1/mo) for keeping a storage trailer on the property. Then they wouldn't have to have these fundraisers, but they'd have funds to do things. But like I said, I'm not a year round resident so it won't go over. In all the years we've been coming here, I've never once seen anyone use the tennis courts.
Ginny and Heather – I usually ask for copies of my full blood work and never have a problem getting it. They (as their routine) send a shortened version – total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides. But that’s all that’s on this paper. So I ask for the full report. Actually, I had so many that the stack was getting too big so I threw out some of the older ones.
M- I usually go for my bloodwork a week or so before I have my physical so that the MD has the most current results. Same for the DEXA scan and mammo. You know, one of the gyms I go to gives hand towels. Yes, they are washed right after you use it and I would think they’d wash them in hot water so the virus would be killed. It would be hard to avoid doorknobs, tho
Pip – feel better fast. Knowing you, even if you’re not feeling well, I bet you still rode your bike

Viruses/germs-my co worker goes to a local gym,he says he got sick probably from there.They don’t wipe down Any of the equipment or disinfect that he’s ever seen.I suggested that he take his own wipes in his gym bag and wipe down what he uses(if he didn’t mind looking like a germaphobe).

Debbie VA- here we tell our kids to have good sportsmanship then all they see on TV is big money 💰 names tossing a tantrum live on tv 📺. They see parents screaming at referees at Tball to dance practices.
Then we tell the kids good behavior y 👗 dressing properly is rewarded they see Kardashians girls half nude to Presidential debates with folks screaming on top of each other not waiting their turns.Then change channels again it’s dance moms with kids y adults calling everyone names yet win every time. I miss when tv used to bleep 🤬 out bad words.
Exercise today but tried a new move hurting so not doing that one again! Was the exercise band tried a new type ouch 🤕.Neck sore to back y few spots. Going to avoid the new one my body said nope so listening. Was pull up go on 1 knee then back up. Ouch.
Today flash cards with JR 4th grade level y kinder/1st ones for word to letter recognition,definition,y if it’s a verb to adjective. Of course we didn’t finish the 4th grade ones before tears cause he wanted to hold it.

Rori and All: I am managing interagency agreements for Virginia’s Medicaid Program. They are grants we’ve been awarded by the federal government and we are disbursing the funds and work to other state agencies. I am in the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services; the second highest budget in the state at $19 Billion funds disbursed for Medicaid services. I am absolutely loving it here.

Allie: It would be wonderful if the doctor could give us a prescription that would help us cope with A**holes! Fortunately, there isn’t one right now because we would all be addicts. You know that change is hard but the results are usually magnificent. You’ve had to make some hard changes in your life but you managed. I will be 62 this year and have started a new job and working towards retirement in 7 years. I am excited! I am sending encouraging thoughts and prayers……START LOOKING FOR A NEW JOB! You can do anything!
FUNNY: DH has a problem with constipation. I fixed him some sautéed spinach which always works for me. He gagged and gagged and heaved before saying he just could not put it in his mouth because it was so slimey. I fixed a pot of chicken vegetable soup. I decided to grind the spinach and put it in the soup. The broth was very dark and a little thicker (life a beef roast gravy). He worried about it because he had never had such a dark broth. He asked me if I had tasted it while it was cooking and what I thought the reason was for the dark broth. I told him I had put more green peppers than normal in the soup – which I had but I was not about to tell him I put the spinach in there. The result was a very rich broth and it was absolutely delicious! He had a big bowl for dinner and a smaller bowl for lunch today. I did finally work up the courage to ask him about his system today and he did experience some relief. It’s a good thing that he doesn’t have much cooking knowledge. Two Points For Me!

Thanks for the welcome Michele and everyone! I got friend requests from 5 guys the second i joined the "community" page...hello...this is not Tinder...LOL!Hoping to get some inspiration from this group and forum. I turned 50 last October and am not going to let my age dictate how I feel about my body. I am trying to turn down the calories and boost the exercise to find a balance that actually works without having to start a full on exercise routine.5
